A Hip-Hop Story, by Heru Ptah

The first novel to truly capture the fast and furious world of hip-hop -- one in which the line between art and life is blurred for two ambitious MCs whose battle to be #1 is fought with weapons and words.
Rappers Flawless and Hannibal are two talented young men moving toward the same dream: to be the best, to take over the world, to see the big picture, to become the most respected rap artists of their generation. Along the way, they battle the business of mainstream hip-hop, industry honchos, crazy fans, and -- most of all -- each other. Caught up in their intense rivalry are Erika, Flawless's sister, and Micah, Hannibal's protegé, two young lovers whose loyalties toward each rapper threaten to ruin their future together. A vivid journey through the underworld of urban music, it is a West Side Story remixed to the movement of hip-hop; a story of desire and dreams, all tied to the beat of hip-hop eternal.

Chapter One

I ain't gotta spit

'Cause ma farts

Flow better than you

Smell better than you

Ma shit is just better than you

I'm a skinny dude

But dude don't be fooled

I'll knock a fat fuck

Back to Bellevue

'Cause you must be crazy

Comin' wit' that weak shit

Cough one line

An' yo fat ass is outta breath

The words are sharp, pungent and cut through shells with a razor's edge. It takes a thick shell to bear it, to hear it, to stand still, all the while crafting an evermore denigrating comeback. As such this pudgy prodigy waited his turn, engulfed in the melee of his peers, pretending not to be fazed by his skinny opponent's stinging aspersions. Waiting for his retort, he meditated on his course of action and how to turn the affections of the ever-growing goading crowd to his favor. It was coming, he could feel it now, Skinny Man had come to the climax of his tirade; the beat was turning to his favor.

No time to be tired, think fast, the beat is on me now, here I go...and then nothing. What the hell! Oh shit...I just went blank. Shit, niggas is looking at me. What the hell was I gonna say again? It was something about what he said. But what the fuck did he say? I don't remember. Shit, how the hell I don't remember what to say? If I don't say something, this kid's gon' eat me. I won't be able to open my mouth on the street again. C'mon, God, you can't let that shit happen. Think, think. What the hell was I gon' say? All right, I'll just keep sayin' "yeah yeah" until something comes to me. All right, that did it. Cats stop staring for a second. But I gotta have something by the next time the beat turns over. God, don't do this to me. Here comes the beat. I gotta say something, but what to say? "Yeah, yeah." Think, think...aahhhhhhhhh...there it goes.

Nigga you fart

'Cause you all gas

You just garbage

So you talk trash

But I'm the trash collector, garbage disposer

An' I ain't overweight

I'm heavyweight, motherfucker

Dirty wit' mine

Hit below the belt line

Give you a uppercut to the cup

Have you cough yo' balls up

You should know better

Than to battle the Brooklyn brawler

When I'm done

I'ma have yo' ass bawlin' fo' yo' momma.

He felt his stride and rode the rhythm. The obligatory Oh Shits began to turn his way. He held nothing back, doing the dozens with precision. It all ate into Skinny Man. He was not as good at concealing his feelings as his robust counterpart. Seeing this, Fat Man edged in for the kill, close enough to kiss. He held the death blow upon his tongue...and unleashed it: along with an inadvertent wad of spit. The Oh shits of the crowd came through clenched teeth. Skinny Man did not wait for an apology. He threw up a fist and connected quickly. Fat Man replied and the entire crowd exploded.

The fight ensued outside of the club, Rampage. It was one of the more popular hip-hop nightclubs in lower Manhattan. At seeing the progressing affray two very big, well-dressed bouncers parted their way through and quickly put an end to it. They pulled the two young men apart; who in truth did not want to be fighting, but were merely caught up in the adrenaline of the movement.

There were SUVs and all manner of expensive cars parked outside, from the Lexus to the Benz. The bouncers dressed in black suits stood at the door. There was a railing that kept the people lined against the wall. The dense procession extended the stretch of the block and around the corner. The line was a dichotomy of gender and style. The women were dressed from head to toe in the most revealing, tight-fitting things they could have squeezed their frames into, while the men wore loose-fitting denim, complemented by work boots or sneakers, with a T-shirt or some form of sports jersey. The pounding music from inside was well heard. The beat beckoned the people in with baited anticipation.

A young man at the front made his way past the bouncers and was handed a flyer as he proceeded. Upon the flyer it read: Hip-hop speak out for justice, Speak out for truth, Free all political prisoners, Fight against the war on terrorism. And on the cover it showed a man with profound eyes, dreadlocks and handcuffs. There was more to be read, but the young man paid it no mind and quickly folded it into his pocket. His mind was already well engaged by the beautiful young girl walking in front of him, keen to the manufactured faded area about her rear. They arrived at the security check where they were frisked. While the muscled guard grabbed at all parts of his body he was far more concerned with the aggressive gropes that the stout female security guard addressed to the girl. When they were finished the girl walked away and the young man approached the female guard.

"Yo, Ma, tell me how can I get yo' job?"

She curled the corner of her lips in sarcasm and prodded him along. He tried to catch up to the girl. He, however, entered the main floor to complete confusion. The club was packed, the crowd thick and the music loud. He looked about without discretion but it was all for naught. He had lost her in the shuffle of flesh and the psychedelic pattern of lights. But within a minute he didn't seem to mind as another beautiful girl squeezed her way across his brow and his thoughts followed the sway of hips.

The crowd was dense, being anywhere from fifteen hundred to two thousand people. While bopping their heads to the beat and dancing as much as the space would allow they focused their attentions toward the stage at the DJ. He was well known and, by the smoothness in his scratches, well deserving of his accolades. He was RA, the hottest DJ in the city. Above him, an all-encompassing banner for Bin Laden hung. Bin Laden was the most popular hip-hop act at the time. He was the premier artist in the Crown Records roster; as such, the name of the ubiquitous music juggernaut was imprinted alongside his. And just below Bin Laden's banner was another for BET Freestyle Championship; again the symbol for Crown Records was imprinted, as Crown was the sponsor of both events.

The music began to fade as a man and a woman entered the stage. She was cute, medium-tanned, stockily built; well-fitted in her mix of bohemian and hip-hop. He was lean, tall, dark, handsome; attired in a mix of thug and preppy. They were Free and AJ, the hosts of BET's 106 and Park. He was the first to address the crowd, "Hey what's up, New York, how are y'all doing tonight!" And Free followed, "Yo, how's everybody doing out there? Alla y'all lookin' so beautiful. Ain't I right, AJ? Isn't everybody just looking so good tonight?"

"You are definitely right about that, Free. Especially the sistas; damn, sistas you look good! Y'all making a brother have thoughts to..." He then looked over to Free, who playfully slapped him on his shoulder.

ar"Boy, you better stop, before you get yourself beat down looking at some other man's woman."

"What you talking about, Free? I can handle my own now. But you're right, you're right, you're right. But I'm just sayin', though, that the sistas look good. And y'all need to give yourselves a round of applause for that."

"All right now, everybody, do we all know why we are here?"

Reacting to Free's question the crowd shouted out, "Bin Laden!"

"Yes, we are definitely here in support of our terror boy, Bin Laden," Free responded. "Doing his thing, dropping the bomb shit as always. But what else are we here for?"

The crowd again shouted out, "Freestyle Championship!"

"That's right, y'all, this is it," AJ remarked. "This is the grand championship of our Freestyle Battles, where two local unsigned talents are going to come up on this stage and do their thing. And when it is all over, one of them won't be unsigned anymore, 'cause he's gonna walk away with a fat-ass record deal from Crown Records, home of Bin Laden, Stalin and Lil' Hitler. Not to mention also being the sponsors of our event tonight."

The crowd cheered again as if playing a round of call and response. "Now, AJ, let's tell the people how these two guys got here."

"To get to this point both of them had to win an almost impossible nine weeks in a row on our televised Freestyle Battles. It was hard work but they both did it. And they are both here tonight to determine who is the best of the best."

"Now, do y'all know who we are talking about?" Free asked.

The crowd began to shout out, "FLAWLESS" and "BULL!" The mob was all but evenly split between supporters of Flawless and those of Hannibal. "Damn, AJ, it looks like it's gon' be a war tonight."

"That's right, Free; so let's not keep the crowd waiting anymore. Let's get this war started. Let's bring out my main man, Flawless the word shifter; and the undeniable, I tell you I'm scared of this guy, Hannibal the Cannibal."

Flawless entered the stage from the left, and Hannibal did so from the right. They were both attractive black men in their early twenties, of average heights and slim builds. Flawless however was the pretty boy. He was more neatly dressed; with his white shell-top sneakers, his light blue jeans, his black loose-fitting T-shirt and his hair: a well-cut blowout. In his Timberland boots Hannibal appeared more rugged. His clothes were darker and baggier, his demeanor sterner and his head was bald. The crowd reacted to the difference in their styles. The women screamed and swooned for Flawless, while the men barked and howled for Hannibal. Through the noise they remained silent; Free broke through the barking. "Now, gentlemen, let's get the rules straight. Basically there are no rules. This isn't like our televised show, so there are no censors. Only rule is: you keep it verbal."

"Yeah, brothers, there is no need for any physicalities here. And that goes for the audience as well. I know we all like to keep it gangsta. But let's keep it peaceful as well. Keep it on the mic."

"Without further ado, let's get started. Flawless lost the toss backstage, so he will be going first. There will be three rounds, one minute each. The audience will judge the winner of each round and the best two out of three wins." She then looked over at both men. "Brothers, are you ready? This is it. DJ, turn up the beat."

One of the best books I have ever read
By Matthew
I want to commend Heru for his novel. I just finished the book and I feel emotionally attached to it. The last time I have ever felt an attachment to a piece such as this was a novel I read in my "Crime and Punishment in American Literature" class. I did not have much knowledge of the hip-hop industry, but now I think I have a better understanding. I think however that the back cover of the novel is misleading, but in a good way. After reading this novel to just simply say it is a love story really does not capture how magnificient this story is. Micah to me is the most interesting character. I believe he is the Flawless Erika fell in love with. As flawless kept saying in repsonse to Micah "this name", he never acknowledged him as a person when he was around or when Erika was explaining her love for him, I think his character was not meant for human existence but rather for a loving spirit that took on likeness to Flawless. I respect Hannibal the most, and I fell in love with Flawless. Truely an excellent book, much success in the future with the movie. Might I suggest DMX to play Hannibal's character?

Best book since Native Son
By Matthew
After reading a Hip-Hop Story I was very moved by the creativity and thoughts of an obvious master of words. After living in NYC for many years I have been exposed to much of the culture written about in this book. I am beyond impressed that someone of Heru's insight and abilities can tell the truth so boldly about the influence of the media and critique the politics of the "right" with force and accuracy. I strive to teach my students in a very republican/white suburb to open their eyes and see the world around them. I have my classes working on an original task: "The Malice of Hate" where they must read any book relating to any type of prejudice and write critiques of the media while submitting them to the companies guilty of discrimination and perpetuating the language of exclusion. A Hip Hop Story was my selection, as I model reading for my kids, and it was the best book that I have read since Native Son. As a teacher of English, I know the power and importance of wielding the written word, and Heru Ptah is a master.

Better than Ms. Ross's Last Few,
By Lena Williams
First, I'd like to say as a rule I have been a huge fan of this writer for quite sometime but her last few novels have been a little less than what I had grown to expect from this writer, so I stopped buying her books for awhile hoping Ms. Ross would somehow magically get her MAGIC back. A friend gave me this book as a gift for my birthday. I was glad she did. I enjoyed the story and even though Ms. Ross still isn't 100% she is at least back to 75%, a doable percentage as far as I'm concerned. Now, I find myself looking forward to her next novel. Hopefully her skills will be back to normal by then!

There are better JR books out there -
By janlouise
These are the stories of 3 eligible bachelors/brothers and the women that finally 'catch' them. I enjoyed the stories since I live in LA but that was about it. JR's earlier books are great! These stories were silly at times for me and didn't really have anything to really sink your teeth into. They were just fun to read for an afternoon. Glad I didn't buy the book. Would I recommend it - if you just want something to read, yeah.

Great story! Probably my second favorite X-men novel
By Kat
Hank McCoy -- the X-men's Beast -- had been working to find a cure for the deadly Legacy Virus that has been sweeping through the world's mutant population. In his quest to find a cure, he and Moira McTaggart, the only human infected by the Legacy Virus, become pawns of Selene, the Black Queen of the New York branch of the Hellfire Club, and Sebastian Shaw, the Hellfire Club's Black King, in their own quest to possess and control the potential cure for the virus. Despite the X-men's best efforts to prevent that out-come, things go from bad to worse -- and then mankind's greatest enemy, Magneto, enters the fray.

Despite some off characterization, this trilogy was fantastic. My favorite part was definitely the character Sebastian Shaw. I don't care for him much in the comics but in this book, you really get the opportunity to dig inside his head and see his motives and thought processes. It almost makes him seem like a sympathetic character. I also thought Hank, Ororo, and Tessa were great in this trilogy.

Highly recommended.

Incredible Non-Graphic Novel!
By Kevin Frohlich
Yes it is Not a Graphic Novel but an actual Novel and it is Superb. I had the individual books in high school and read them all but lost or sold them at some point during moves so now I bought the omnibus and looking for other Non-graphic novels of X-men because this gives you depth and a graphic novel does not. I would rather watch the X-men movies instead of reading one of the graphic novels, yes the art is good undeniably but even a movie gives you more.

Love Is Never Painless: Three Novellas, by Zane, Eileen M. Johnson, V. Anthony Rivers

Love Is Never Painless

Truer words have never been spoken. This heart-wrenching collection of novellas brings that statement to life in three unique ways, penned by three of the generation's most prolific authors.

In Eileen M. Johnson's "How the Other Half Lives," Jamellah and Fernecia have been friends since forever. Having escaped the poverty of their youth together, they both had made their mark in society. However, men problems threaten to make them literally fall apart. Fernecia is married to a man who was raised to think he is better than everyone -- even his own wife. Jamellah has always used men to get ahead but eventually everything catches up to her. The two friends must ultimately count on each other in a world of havoc and distrust.

In V. Anthony Rivers's "Love Is 2 Blame," Malcolm is devastated after a two-year relationship with Shaylisa ends. He finds it difficult to function because he cannot comprehend why she would want to end such a perfect situation. He was everything she had asked for; he treated her with respect and showered her with love. Yet love was not enough. Trying to move on to someone new will not be as easy as it used to be, but will the lovely Zahara show Malcolm what true love is all about?

In Zane's "Staring Evil in the Face," Robier has everything a man could ever wish for: a stable and rewarding career, two beautiful children, an elegant home, and the woman of his dreams. Having loved Tiphanie since college, he is determined to keep his marital vows until . . . Tiphanie is involved in a horrible car accident that changes the entire course of their lives.

From nervous breakdowns to drug addiction, Love Is Never Painless explores the deeper side of love; the side rarely explored in romance novels. Zane, Johnson, and Rivers have penned a powerful collection of novellas that will not only have readers talking but also examining their own relationships with a new perspective.

Coldplay: Look at the Stars, by Gary Spivack

The riveting story of how Coldplay conquered America.

COLD PLAY

Known as much for their personal integrity as for their dramatically original sound, Coldplay has skyrocketed to superstar status since the release of their stunning debut album, Parachutes. Their follow-up, A Rush of Blood to the Head, which went multiplatinum like the first, was still selling 40,000 copies a week even a year after it first topped the charts, and the band sells out the world's largest arenas.

But life wasn't always so glorious for these boys from Britain. Plagued during their early years by self-doubt, the foursome has broken up, backed out of high-profile gigs, even choked onstage in front of a roomful of industry types. Now, for the first time, the highs and lows of their life on the road to superstardom are revealed. This is the story behind the angst and despair that nearly ripped the band apart just as they were perched on the brink of galactic success. It is a chronicle of Coldplay's transformation from a flailing, insecure band into the two-time winners of the Grammy Award for Alternative Album of the Year and one of the most powerful international rock acts around.

Penned by an industry insider who has toured extensively with the band -- and including never-before-seen photos and exclusive quotes from the group -- Coldplay: Look at the Stars puts you on the tour bus, in the studio, and backstage with four men who've won over the hearts of millions of music fans worldwide.

Pleasant "Quickie" Read of How Coldplay Broke the US
By Paul Allaer
I'm a big Coldplay fan, and when I saw this book at my local library, I just picked it up out of curiosity. The author, Gary Spivack, was a record label executive at Capitol (he's since then departed) and responsible for marketing/supporting Coldplay in the US.

"Coldplay: Look At the Stars" is Spivack's personal take on how Coldplay broke the US market, and in that it succeeds. He obviously had a lot of contact with the band, and that is where the book succeeds. My favorite part of the book is Gary's recollections on Coldplay's first American tour in February, 2001, for no other reason than I happened to see Coldplay in Portland, OR (the second stop in the US). You could just feel the magic in the air, a band that was about to make it really big.

The author doesn't spend a lot of time on how the band actually formed and where it found its musical origins, and that is the major failing of this book. Nevertheless, this is a quick and pleasant read. Spivack recounts his sacking from Capitol in early 2003, and how quick Chris Martin was there to console him (by phone). But for the definitive Coldplay story, we will have to wait another day and another book.

"Look at the record exec."
By Joe
I'm a musician and a big Coldplay fan, so I should have loved this book, but it fell short. This book read more like a tour book you'd buy at a concert put together by their marketing people than an insider's story.

The main problem I had is it was written by a record executive who claims to be "insider", but has nothing new to offer. I suppose Gary's perspective would be interesting to fellow record executives and the like, but the book falls short in revealing any real insight on the band that you couldn't read in a magazine interview with the band.

One of Gary's "insights" is how humble Chris Martin is...he quotes Chris in a conversation early in the book where Chris asks Gary "how can I make your job easier" and Gary beams. WHO CARES. Chris Martin is humble and selfless to a fault; no insight here. The problem is most of Gary's interactions with the band are interactions between a record exec. and the band...and it reads that way.

The fact is, Gary had very little to do with Coldplay's success and it's obvious he is not much of an insider. Gary admits himself Coldplay was "lightning in a bottle", signed only after a fierce bidding war between labels. I think Chris Martin is just a really nice guy, who saw someone (Gary Spivack) down on his luck and wanted to help the poor guy out by letting him write this book (Gary had been fired by Columbia just before penning the book).

The author seems to blame his lack of an insightful story on Coldplay's middleclass upbringing and that they're all around good kids (this isn't a drugs, sex and rock and roll type band). I don't agree that an interesting story couldn't be written by the right person.

My biggest problem is this book is written by a record company exec. who approached the project like you would a tour guide sold at a concert venue, only longer. Gary didn't grow up with the band (to the point they were signed), didn't discover the band (they were signed by a sister co. in England), doesn't manage the band (where he'd be touring every night seeing all sides of the members), or produce the band (where he's in the studio witnessing the creavtive process)...he just booked tours and showed up occasionally for concerts and "meet and greets". How does that qualify you to write a band biography?

Coldplay should have their manager, producer or the members themselves write this story...with a side of the story to tell that we don't already know.

An Excellent Source
By Todd C Noker
Rare is the event where one close to the story is also a gifted writer. This is why Gary Spivack's LOOK AT THE STARS is an event deserving your attention. Spivack was part of the process of Coldplay developing from a brand new British band that nobody had ever heard of to a household name. The author had access to events and behind-the-scenes meetings that will keep you turning pages. This is a must read for anyone curious about the music business ... whether you're a Coldplay fan or not.

From Publishers Weekly
Right before Tasya Flynn breaks into ex-cat burglar and millionaire Ian MacPherson's California mansion, he comes close to ending his own life out of a sense of hopelessness in Mulvany's (Aquamarine, etc.) unwieldy tale of romantic suspense. But Ian sees in Tasya, who clearly possesses latent talent for capers, a chance to take revenge on Alex Farrell, who left him for dead during their theft 30 years earlier of the Brazilian Milagre, "an enormous tourmaline, half again the size of a man's fist and a rich ruby red." Though Ian is a generation older than Tasya and, thanks to Alex, is confined to a wheelchair, they fight a growing attraction. Ian trains Tasya to exact his revenge and slowly learns of her horrific past with an abusive lover named Richard, whom she murdered to escape—or so she thinks. When Tasya learns that she can use Milagre for time travel (Milagre means "miracle" in Portuguese), she goes back to the time of the original theft and ends up falling in love with Ian's younger self even more deeply than with the present-day Ian. Happily-ever-after 30 years in the past may seem strange, but it's no more bizarre than the rest of this roller-coaster of a novel, which suffers from a surfeit of magic and mayhem.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Betrayed by his old apprentice, and rendered wheelchair-bound for 30 years, former cat-burglar Ian MacPherson is ready to take his own life when fate sends young Tasya Flynn into his world--and into his heart. Tasya, also wounded inside and out, suspects Ian's motives for helping her, but she soon grows to trust and even love him, and she is willing to help him on one last caper for revenge on the man who crippled him. But the key to the job, a mysterious red tourmaline called Milagre, turns out to be more than they bargained for, and is, in fact, nothing less than the key to their past and their future. Mulvany turns in a unique and captivating tale, a work of romantic suspense laced with paranormal elements and anchored by an unconventional hero and an action-oriented heroine. Readers who enjoy books that veer off the beaten path will enjoy this one, and its cross-genre appeal should entice readers who like romance, suspense, and a bit of magic. Nina Davis

Jewel Thieves Learn about Love & Magic in this Romance
By Dakota
RUN NO MORE by Catherine Mulvany is an engrossing time-travel/paranormal romance that is fascinating in its originality. Since most time-travels usually send the hero or heroine back in time to Old England or the Scottish Highlands, RUN NO MORE is a breath of fresh air, setting-wise, as it takes place in exotic locales like Tahiti and Rio de Janeiro. It's also the first romance I've ever read that revolved around cat burglars on a jewel heist to steal a magic stone. And, it's the first I've encountered that uses Brazilian voodoo as a key plot point.

The characters are all interesting, from crippled hero Ian (a former cat burglar) to young Tasya, his tormented protégé and heroine, to secondary characters ranging from Ian's Brazilian and English pals to his former ex-partner, a double-crossing gambler named Alex. The storyline is fast-paced, and I even became anxious at the very end, wondering if Tasya and Ian were really going to end up together.

My only complaint about the book revolved around Tasya's abusive past at the hands of Richard, who was over-the-top as the bad guy in the story. I had no problem believing in magic jewels and time travel, but Richard's almost cartoon-ish evilness was too much for me to swallow.

Anyway, I highly recommend RUN NO MORE as a different and enjoyable reading experience. If you are like me, you'll want to book a flight to Brazil as soon as you finish this book!

Award-winning paranormal romance
By Gale Z
Second-story man, Ian "Cat" MacPherson, is coaxed out of his luxurious retirement by his former apprentice, Alex Farrell. Alex covets the mysterious red stone known as the Milagre. Ian, however, is unaware of just how deep Alex's greed lies and he literally falls into the trap laid by his former protégé.

The story then flashes forward thirty years. Cat is sitting in a wheelchair contemplating suicide when a woman crawls through the pet door, intent on robbing him. After this startling event, he reconsiders life and offers her a meal. Soon, they are engaged in cautious conversation and Cat begins to formulate a plan to get revenge on Alex.

Run No More is listed on the 2004 Best Contemporary Romance list by Romantic Times and won a 2005 Prism Award in the Time Travel Category. It is a captivatingly fun romance with elements of suspense and the paranormal. The book manages to create realistic characters even as the storyline dips into areas beyond the mundane.

What a great read!
By J. A. Hayes
I really enjoyed this book. It was so different from so many other romances with a paranormal twist. Ms. Mulvaney's description of how things hooked together from the present to the past was great. I loved both the lead characters - Tasya and Ian, and Paulinho was a wonderful character who added greatly to the story. The only thing that fell a little short was Richard - how he got from Point A to Point B, how he found Tasya at La Magia, how he could get a job there so quickly ... but this is fiction, and it wasn't that big a deal in the greater scheme of things. I really enjoyed reading this book, and I haven't been able to say that about a lot of the paranormals I've read recently. I guess I must be overdosing on vampires and werewolves. This book was different - wonderfully and imaginatively written. Highly recommended, and I look forward to reading more from this author.

To Pleasure a Prince (Royal Brotherhood, Book 2), by Sabrina Jeffries

Bestselling author Sabrina Jeffries pens the sizzling story of one of three half-noble half brothers, who makes a most unwelcome entrance into society...
and a most unexpected match.
Beautiful Lady Regina Tremaine has turned down so many suitors that she's called La Belle Dame Sans Merci. The truth: she won't marry because she carries a dark secret. She sees no good reason, however, why her brother shouldn't court the lovely Louisa North -- even if the girl's brother, the notorious "Dragon Viscount," objects.
Marcus North, Viscount Draker -- bastard son of the Prince of Wales -- is rumored to be a monster who holds women captive in his dark castle to have his way with them. He has been exiled from polite society for years. But when Lady Regina makes a plea on her brother's behalf, Marcus proposes an outrageous deal: her brother can court Louisa so long as Marcus can court Regina. Can the beauty and the beast survive a proper courtship when the devastatingly improper passion between them threatens to cause the scandal of the century?

From Publishers Weekly
This sprightly Regency romance, the second in bestseller Jeffries's Royal Brotherhood series (after In the Prince's Bed), focuses on the outcast brother, Lord Marcus North, Viscount Draker, whose illegitimacy--he's the bastard son of the Prince of Wales--and reputation as a gothic villain have kept him out of society for years. When the Dragon Viscount decides his half-sister, Louisa, is in need of a season, he turns to his newfound brothers for assistance. Louisa is a success in London's highest circles, but has attracted the attention of the rakish duke, Simon Tremaine. Marcus is determined to nip the relationship in the bud and keep Prinny, who has recently attempted to insinuate himself into Louisa's life, away from her. Marcus can handle the prince--but he's at a loss when dealing with the Lady Regina, Simon's beautiful sister, whom society has christened "La Belle Dame Sans Merci" because of her quick wit and unwillingness to accept any of the marriage proposals she's received. Marcus soon discovers the passionate heart beating beneath Regina's cool exterior--and that she guards an awkward personal secret. If the resolution of Regina's problem strains credulity at the end, the parallel courtships of the Tremaine and North siblings engages throughout. Readers will eagerly await the third brother's story.

Love it
By Barb
I read this so long ago I didn't remember anything about the book when I picked it up again.I must say, I loved it as much as I had the first time. I liked that the heroine was a little too naive for her own good, even though she tried to act all smart and worldly. I liked that the hero constantly struggled with pangs of conscience, even while he was falling in love with her. Having read this right after another regency in which the hero was in constant state of painful arousal every time the heroine entered the room, this one felt a lot milder, but it wasn't really. The love scenes were very steamy, but they were offset by a very sweet romance.

I would maybe have liked if the secondary characters had gotten a little more conflict (referring to Katherine's childhood friend) as that part seemed a little too... neat for my liking. But overall, there was a good balance for the main characters, so it's a comfortable 5-stars for me.

Byblow brothers, amazing premise!
By Aremina235
I haven't read the first installment but after this I most certainly will. Second and third servings please. A brotherly premise with a besotted, possessive hero at the center is my weakness and its uniquely and cleverly done. Are there to many references about dragons for my liking and virginal ladies. Yes. But do I skip a single page like i normally do in the face of redundant and repetitive language? No. No I did not. That in my book makes this jaunt a guilty and lusty pleasure. There's good angst and great characters with great familial suspense, nothing hammy like a crime or a theft that has no real Steam but rather good ole regency and ballroom dynamics. Politics. Prejudice . Gossip. And gowns. If that's your thing than you'll love this. I certainly did.

I absolutely loved the Royal Brotherhood series
By Kym Roberts
I absolutely loved the Royal Brotherhood series, Jefferies is at her best with these men in need of love, but each hero must conquer his own hang-up about his parentage before he can find his HEA. Witty, sparkling with sensuality, Jefferies entices her readers from the very first page! If I had to choose between the three novels in the series, Draker, in To Pleasure a Prince, was my favorite hero.

About the Author
Marv Wolfman has had an award-winning career in comic books that has spanned five decades. He is the creator of some of comics' most memorable characters, including The New Teen Titans (with artist George Perez), nightwing, Deathstroke the Terminator, and Vigilante for DC Comics, and Blade the Vampire Slayer, Nova, Bullseye, and Black Cat for Marvel Comics. Marv has written virtually every character at DC and Marvel, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, and the Fantastic Four, as well as the Howard the Duck newspaper comic strip, numerous live action and animated TV shows, children's books, novels, and stage shows. Among his many accomplishments was a stint as Marvel's editor-in-chief, a DC Comics senior editor, one of the founding editors of Disney Adventures Magazine, as well as a 16-year run as the writer of The New Titans, and an unforgettable 70-issue run on Marvel's Tomb of Dracula.

Get the original graphic novel and forget this book.
By Amazon Customer
In 1985, DC Comics made comic book history by publishing a 12-issue maxi series that totally reshaped the DC Universe. Prior to 1985, the DC Universe was a confusion of alternate worlds, timelines and continuities that left readers confused: Did Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Hawkman and others fight the Nazis during World War II or didn't they? Did Clark Kent ever marry to Lois Lane or didn't he? Was Superman's cousin called Supergirl or Power Girl? Did Wonder Woman have a daughter named Fury or didn't she? The problem was, DC Comics was publishing a whole lot of stories that apparently took place on different Earths in different universes. There was Earth-1, where all the modern-day superheroes we are familiar with lived: Superman, Wonder Woman, Supergirl, etc. And then there was Earth-2, where identical or similar heroes appeared decades earlier to fight the Nazis in World War II. And then there was Earth-3, where all the familiar characters were super-villains and the only superhero was Lex Luthor. And Earth-S. And Earth-X. Ad infinitum. Something had to be done, and "Crisis on Infinite Earths" was born. In one stroke, this array of confusing alternate universes was compressed into a single universe. Along the way, the origin of the so-called multiverse was explained, some existing heroes died and some new ones were born, battles were fought and sacrifices were made. Established major characters like Supergirl, the Flash and Wonder Woman were allowed to die, along with a multitude of other minor characters. The resulting DC Universe had a rebooted continuity that was unified, streamlined and easier to keep track of. Twenty years on, no major comic book publishing event has surpassed the epic that was "Crisis on Infinite Earths".

All of which makes the mediocrity of this novel, which retells the story of "Crisis" from the point of view of the Flash, all the more disappointing. Marv Wolfman's attempt to flesh out the original story (which he crafted with artist George Perez back in 1985) into a full-scale novel simply fails to measure up to the original tale - "Crisis" the novel is strangely lacking in the grandeur that "Crisis" the comic book had in spades. "Crisis" the comic was an epic - "Crisis" the novel is simply a bore. Yes, there is always a problem with translating visuals from a movie, TV show, or even comic book into plain old boring words, but the problem with "Crisis" simply isn't that. For the record, I thoroughly enjoyed "Kingdom Come" by Elliot S. Maggin, "No Man's Land" by Greg Rucka, and "The Death and Life of Superman" by Roger Stern. These novels, which retold the stories of some of DC other successful comic books, added something to the original stories by fleshing out the characters and expanding on the events therein. You could read these books on their own merits and enjoy them without ever having read the original comics.

"Crisis" simply fails to achieve this. The whole exercise reeks of a rush job. Reading "Crisis', one gets the feeling that either Marv Wolfman (i) simply ran out of time, or (ii) lost interest totally midway through writing the novel, which should have been at least a third longer. The whole narration feels terribly compressed, and its pacing is just awful. The events from the first 7 issues of the original 12-issue epic fill up much of the book, taking up almost 80% of the novel. The events of the last 5 issues were relegated to the remaining 20%. I find this really weird, given that most of the crucial action in "Crisis" actually happened in the last 5 issues, as were the emotional ramifications of these events on the characters. Events from the tail-end of "Crisis" were inexplicably skipped over while lots of boring bits were added to the front section. Major characters were randomly dropped - where were Wonder Woman-2 or Superboy-Prime? What happened to Darkseid, who played such a pivotal role in the final battle in the original story? The origin of another vital character, Dr Light, was totally unexplained, as was her transformation from a selfish and uncaring person into a self-sacrificing superhero. What happened to the villains' betrayal of their allies? And after spending a couple of pages writing about how Wonder Woman pleaded with her mother, Queen Hippolyta, to allow her to take the Amazons into battle, Marv Wolfman did not even mention her subsequent death during the final battle! The sacrifices of many other minor characters were given short shrift (e.g. Aquagirl, Lori Lemaris, Dove, Kole, Robin-2 and the Huntress). This renders the whole narration emotionally uninvolving - the whole point about the original "Crisis" was about loss and sacrifice for the greater good. Even the deaths of Supergirl and the Flash seem strangely sterile here compared with how they were depicted in the original comic book. How can readers feel any emotional connection to the story if the deaths of well-established and well-loved characters only merited throw-off one-liners? That last 20% of the book really should have been expanded.

My advice? Read the original comic book - it is available as a reprint in both hardcover and trade paperback formats. Wait for the paperback version of the novel if you must read it.

Flash fans and fans of human-centered drama will LIKE it!
By G. Cepeda
There's no question that Crisis on Infinite Earths: The Novel doesn't have the complete scope of the original comic book mini-series. I think it's impossible to translate the mini-series into a 310-page verbal novel and frankly not worth the effort to redo the EXACT SAME STORY. It would have been very boring to me to read the EXACT same thing that I got in the original mini-series. I LIKE having new angles on stories and in this case I do feel that Crisis: The Novel has new angles to offer on the story as much as the Kingdom Come novel had to offer new insights with respect to the Kingdom Come graphic novel, too.

That said, I like the angle Marv Wolfman used to retell this story. If you love The Flash and human-centered drama, this is a nice book to get. Be aware that there is time-skipping through the novel (without giving away revelations completely, The Flash IS time-travelling). I know some people can't get their heads around time-travel, but it's not that bad in the novel.

If there's a sore point that this novel brings up, it's how DC Comics completely wasted the Barry Allen character. The 1950s/1960s Flash IS the definitive iconic version of that character but for reasons that defy logic DC essentially abandoned the character in favor of a hipper, frankly less-sophisticated successor. As much as I like Wally West, he doesn't have the police scientists/forensics specialist background of his predecessor (Barry Allen) and has added little to The Flash saga. Wally has basically inherited Barry's rogues gallery and costume and in effect become Barry Allen, Mark II minus the innnovations and science that made Barry Allen stand out. DC missed an opportunity to revitalize The Flash by cashing in on the crime drama renaissance currently happening on TV with shows like NYPD Blue, CSI, Law & Order, etc. DC Comics HAD its crime scene investigator in Barry Allen and blew a chance to utilize that aspect of the character in a superheroic or realistic setting...

My main criticisms of this novel are its lack of proper editing and interior illustrations. It would have been nice to get new B & W illustrations (like the Kingdom Come novel) from George Perez, Alex Ross, or Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez to accompany the narrative, but the only illustration is on the dustjacket. There are very few grammatical errors in the novel, but it's frustrating to see some spelling errors pop up with certain character names again and again. This book either wasn't edited at all or was edited by a non-comic fan.

Those nitpicks aside...

Frankly, I don't think you have to be a big reader of DC Comics to enjoy this novel. Be aware that there are 2 versions of Superman in this novel but their differences are explained explicitly.

The biggest mysteries of this novel are NOT the storyline and changes from the original comic book version but why the distribution and print numbers on this novel are so lousy!

I had a hard time finding this book in stores and probably bought the last copy in the ENTIRE city of Columbus, Ohio! There should have been more copies of this book printed and distribution should have been much better than it was...

It puzzles me why this book WASN'T published and distributed by Warner Books seeing that its parent corporation owns the characters in this novel. Crisis on Infinite Earths is one of the most talked-about storylines in comics in the past 20 years and for the better part of the 1980s Marv Wolfman was one of DC Comics' (another Warner subsidiary) best-selling and most prolific writers. The Crisis novel and its author deserved support from Warner Books based on Wolfman's past record and reverence for these characters.

20 years later from the Flash's point of view
By Dan Young
Comic fans are probably wondering how this classic tale can be re-told from the POV of Barry Allen as he dies well before the story ends. Without giving too much away, in the seconds before his death Barry begins to bounce around in time to a greater extent then readers of the original comic were lead to believe. The result of this timeshifting narrative is sort of a "Lovely Bones" for superheroes wherein we watch the Flash react to his colleagues struggle against the collapse of the old DC comics multiverse.

Hardcore fanboys will no doubt rail against the minor changes to the original story but most were obviously omissions for the sake of brevity. Marv Wolfman uses the Flash to get to the heart of a very complicated narrative and makes this story accesible to the non- comics fan. In the end, "Crisis" is a worthwhile companion to Wolfman and Perez's original collection

From Publishers Weekly
Cassandra (Casey) Ellis, 34, a single, successful psychotherapist, is the newest of this prolific writer's heroines. The novel opens with a memorial service for Dr. Cornelius Unger, a brilliant and reclusive psychologist who is also Casey's father. She never knew him personally, since she was the product of her mother's single encounter with Unger, and is shocked to learn that Dr. Unger has left her a $3 million townhouse on Boston's Beacon Hill, complete with a maid, Meg, and a gardener, Jordan. Casey has always felt hostile toward her famous, mysterious father, even though her mother never expressed any anger. She's uneasy at first about living in a luxurious house haunted by her father's presence, but soon finds its meticulously attended gardens a source of relief from professional stress and the emotional turmoil of caring for her mother, left comatose after a recent accident. Moreover, she is attracted to handsome, virile Jordan. While she's rooting through Dr. Unger's personal papers, she comes across the story of Jenny Clyde, a young woman in her 20s who was abused by her father for years before being rescued by a police officer. Casey becomes intrigued: is this incestuous relationship fiction or one of Dr. Unger's case histories? Why did her father leave it for her to find? Delinsky (The Woman Next Door, etc.) weaves Jenny's story through the novel, and meshes her and Casey's fates in a melodramatic climax. Both stories have some lapses in credibility and underdeveloped supporting characters (Meg is particularly weak), but the plot is more sophisticated and fast-moving than some of Delinsky's earlier work. It will satisfy her fans and may even win her some new readers.

From Booklist
Casey Ellis has spent her life longing for the father she never knew. Jenny Clyde has spent hers loathing the father she knew all too well. Casey's father is a noteworthy psychologist named Cornelius Unger; Jenny's is a notorious prisoner, Darden Clyde. When Unger dies, he bequeaths Casey more than just his luxurious Beacon Hill townhouse; she also inherits his cook, gardener, and random segments of Jenny's disturbing diary, a bewildering chronicle written prior to Jenny's mysterious disappearance in the company of a shadowy young man known only as Pete. Darden is about to be released from prison for the murder of Jenny's mother, and his imminent arrival permeates Jenny's abject account of her life spent in fear of his psychological and sexual abuse. Hoping to solve the puzzling connection between this tortured young woman and her enigmatic father, Casey follows the journal's tantalizing clues in search of not only Jenny's identity and whereabouts but also her own familial relationships. Fantasy battles reality in Delinsky's emotive novel of discovery and denial, love and liberation. Seamlessly and compassionately weaving Jenny's unsettling past with Casey's uncertain future, Delinsky delivers a scintillating study of each woman's search for answers and absolution. Carol Haggas

Barbara Delinsky outdoes herself this time!
By pisces
Everything you love about Barabara Delinsky's writing is here in her latest novel, plus some bonuses. This is the first time, well, since "A Woman Next Door," that she has written something you cannot put down. There is suspense, mystery, complex emotional issues, right to life issues, small towns, incest, child molestation, ghosts, suicide, aging parents, grief, etc.. plus much, much more. And, all these themes are tied together beautifully.
I rarely give Delinsky 5 stars, but I can see "Flirting With Pete" is a first-rate effort. It really is one of Delinsky's best, if not the best she has ever written.
Was there anything I didn't like? I think she gets a little too technical with the medical stuff. An author needs to make sure a novel isn't coming off like a textbook in explanation. However, I am interested in medical stuff, and nature/gardening, so it wasn't that boring for me. That's the problem: if the subject is maple syrup, or apple cider making, and you couldn't care in the least, then getting too technical is a problem.
But, here, the whole gardening/flowers aspect of this novel works because there is a sense of nature that parallels the gripping plot. I really got a strong sense of the sprawling three-tiered garden setting, and the multi-level Beacon Hill townhouse that much of this story takes place in. Delinsky's characterization and insight into her characters moods and feelings is so nuanced and precise, I felt like the characters were in the room with me.
I did, however, think the cover was a bit too much and gimmicky. But, so what? I don't rate based on a cover and I couldn't care less what's on the jacket. What matters is what's between the covers, and Delinsky has absolutely outdone herself on this novel.
One thing that Delinsky does right is to throw in her twists all throughout this novel--unlike some authors (Nicholas Sparks) who make you wait until the very end until the payoff. Delinsky throws in a series of payoffs all throughout her novel, giving the reader some immediate satisfaction, as well as hooking the reader early-on. I'm serious, once you get to the final eight chapters, you will absolutely not be able to put this one down, and I'm usually a slow reader and like to pace myself, but I easily had this done in less than a week.
Anyone who liked Delinsky's "Three Wishes" is sure to like "Flirting With Pete". Also Delinsky's writing is as good as Anita Shreve's and similar in tone to the writing in Anita Shreve's "The Last Time They Met" and Anita Shreve's "The Weight of Water". All of those novels had two parallel stories going on which rapidly careen, collide, and intersect in gripping plot twists. Delinsky brilliantly uses foreshadowing ala Anita Shreve, and creates a sense of urgency in the plots, all done through character, making this effort of Barbara Delinsky's so much more than a "romance". I think Delinsky has proven herself, with "Flirting With Pete," to be one of the most accomplished mainstream writers, right up there with the best of fiction writers such as Anita Shreve and Richard Russo(Empire Falls).
I've read at least 12 or 13 different novels by Barbara Delinsky, and this is unlike anything I've ever come across from her. Bravo!

A masterpiece you don't want to miss.
By Cynthia S. Hood
I consider myself a 'book snob'. I demand a solid story, great writing, characters who hold my affection and attention, a plot that goes somewhere in a somewhat forward manner and a writer who keeps me entertained. Barbara Delinsky is that and more. I consider this a masterpiece.

"Flirting with Pete" sounded fun and somewhat interesting so I picked it up and was surprised when I found myself reading it at 3 am on three different mornings. I didn't want to go to sleep.

She weaves several stories together so flawlessly that you're able to live through all of the characters. She takes a subject that's been "done" and redoes it in a way that you can go through it without wanting to take Prozac and call in to work for a week.

This is not a book about victims or survivors, it's a story about life that is so beautifully told you will never forget it. I love the fact that she unfolds the story slowly and switches back and forth so that you're not overwhelmed by sorrow or that you feel badly throughout the book.

It's a wonderful story about "making it" through life and coming out the other side - no matter what obstacles are faced. I highly recommend this book to everyone.

memorable work of womens fiction
By A Customer
Therapist Casey Ellis is attending the funeral of renowned psychologist Cornelius Unger, a respected person in his field. Casey feels melancholy because Cornelius is the father who never acknowledged her and never made any effort to talk to her even when she enrolled in one of his classes. At the end of the funeral, his lawyer tells Casey that her father left her his Beacon Hill townhouse with the request that she keep on the maid and the gardener.
At first Casey doesn't want anything to do with the home out of loyalty to her mother who has been in a coma for the last three years and is not expected to wake up. When one of her partners in her group practice absconds with the rent money, Casey decides to open a solo practice at her father's townhouse. There she meets the handsome gardener Jordan; they start a relationship. She also becomes involved with a manuscript her father left for her about a woman who he treated as an outcast by the town she lives in and is afraid of the father who is coming home from prison after six years for killing her mother.
Barbara Delinsky has written a moving tale of two women having to cope with severe traumas, one fighting her demons alone and the therapist having a support system that carries her through each crisis. One of this author's greatest talents is to write about people who immediately establish rapport with the audience so that readers care what happens to them. FLIRTING WITH PETE is a memorable work of women's fiction.
