BEFORE

Her house sinks down to death, and her course leads to the shades. All who go to her cannot return and find again the paths of life.

-- Proverbs 2:18-19

The world will end, or so the sagas claim, in fire and water.

Earthquakes will fell every tree except Yggdrasil, the World Tree. Gods will battle one another, and in the wake of their combat, flames and steam will blot out the sky. Without the sun's rays, summer will cease to bring warmth to the mountains and the glaciers will spread across the land.

Lilith didn't necessarily believe in the legendary descriptions of Ragnarok. She had been undead long enough to know that every religion made up stories to suit its needs. The Norsemen were no different. But Lilith lived on land once occupied by Sturmi Bonestealer, whose sagas described the cataclysmic clash of the gods that would wipe the planet clean, leaving but two people, Lif and Lithrasir, hidden inside Yggdrasil's leafy boughs, so she felt she owed the ancient bard a fair hearing.

She stretched her lean form languorously on the cold marble slab, her left hand skating up her torso, enjoying the smooth, new flesh.

Around her, six young girls -- young in comparison to Lilith, as everyone was, they had been twelve and thirteen when they were turned in 1967 -- sponged fresh blood onto her skin, occasionally squeezing drops into her eyes and mouth. Lilith swallowed what she could and let the rest soak in through her pores.

Nothing restored like blood.

Precious blood.

Life-giving blood.

Her world had not ended on that balmy April night in Los Angeles -- far across the Atlantic and the North American continent from her home near Alesland, Norway -- at the hands of Stella Olemaun. The world had not ended, but it had been close enough for Lilith.

The enormous explosion had leveled the house Lilith had rented for her mission of vengeance in the States. The pain had been intense, enormous, worse than anything she had experienced since her death, so long ago that she could barely remember it. Her skin had burned away, her organs had withered, her bones had shattered.

She had survived, though, and with the help of her young friends, she was spirited away from California, onto a freighter, and finally brought back to the shadowed forests and icy fjords of her beloved Norway.

The Olemaun woman would pay for her deceit.

Oh yes. A thousand times since that night, Lilith had sworn that Ragnarok would rain down on her head.

First Stella's husband, Eben Olemaun, had murdered Vicente -- Lilith's lover, companion, and husband these last several centuries. Then Stella had written a book (a book!) about those who had foolishly attacked the town of Barrow, Alaska, where she and Eben had been acting law enforcement. In that book, she had described Vicente's murder as if it was a heroic action. As a final indignity, Lilith had arranged to trade Eben's ashes to Stella for a computer disk containing video evidence of the disastrous Barrow invasion -- the only known recorded incident of such an event -- and Stella had repaid Lilith's generosity by trying to blow her to pieces.

Lilith closed her eyes, trying to focus on the small hands that rubbed blood across her breasts and stomach, up her legs, over her unsettled brow. Soaked in blood, she was healing quickly. But she needed to relax her mind as well as her body, needed to recuperate mentally, not just physically.

Around the world, she was hailed as Mother Blood. She was the greatest of them, giver of eternal life, matriarch of the race. Without Vicente all these months, her strength was even more important.

Without Vicente, she reigned alone.

But reign she would.

Already, as her organs reconstituted themselves, her skin growing anew and spreading over her body, her hair regaining some of its luster if not its length, she had given a great deal of thought to that. Her children were divided, some of them set on a course -- like that assault on Barrow -- that could only result in their final extermination. They needed the leadership, the guidance, that only Lilith could provide.

"Missus?"

Lilith realized that the girl had already said the word three times, each one with a rising inflection, even a little quiver in her tone. Heather, she thought, without looking. Heather's hands were tiny, delicate, fingers no longer than the distance between Lilith's knuckles. She had black hair, blue eyes, and an angelic face that could charm a priest into offering up his own jugular. "What is it?"

"Missus, someone is -- "

Heather's voice cut off abruptly. Lilith pressed her elbows against the slab and tried to rise, but she was still too weak. She opened her eyes but saw little more than the red haze of her feeding, with indistinct shapes moving about like shadows in a dark room. She blinked, trying to clear her vision.

"Missus -- !" Then a horrible screeching.

Now Lilith could see a larger shape moving among them. The girl-shapes threw themselves at it, fighting with fang and claw, but the intruder -- a male, she could just discern -- lashed out, his strength more than equal to theirs.

The sound of flesh tearing, blood splashing wetly against floor and walls and even Lilith's nakedness.

In just moments, he loomed over her, his features becoming more distinct with proximity. Tall, his head -- like Vicente's -- had been completely shaved. Also like her husband, this one's large ears tapered at the top, almost like wings jutting out from his head. For the briefest of moments she thought it wasVicente, back from his final death --

No.

This one didn't carry himself with Vicente's regal grace, but slouched like a common street creature. A foul smell assaulted her senses, as if he had been feeding on rancid flesh.

"I do not know who you are, but you have made a terrible mistake," she croaked. Her damaged throat burned when she spoke, forcing the words out as if pushing them across ground glass.

The intruder laughed.

For some reason, the sudden, ghastly sound actually revived in Lilith a raw emotion not felt in what could very well have been ages. It was fear.

"I would think," he said, leaning closer, "that you would be happier to see your father, dear, sad Lilith."

"You -- " she began.

"Shh...don't try to talk, daughter..." he soothed, caressing her cheek with a large hand. "You are not feeling well. Poor thing."

"I -- "

The large hand suddenly clamped over her mouth. "You never knew when to listen and when to speak. This is almost sad."

Now the hand snaked to her throat, his strong fingers pressing against the tender skin there like steel rods. He lifted her up toward him, her back losing contact with the slab.

"Hear me now, daughter. The time has come to change our ways. For too long, we have hidden in the shadows, fearing the mortals. But I ask you, does the lion fear the calf? Does the wolf cower from the lamb? Please don't answer, these are simply rhetorical questions, Lilith. And besides, you are so weak."

That laugh again, like an infant's bones rattling in a demon's skull, utterly without mirth. "So desperately weak. No, do not speak, daughter. There will be time for that." He yanked again, pulling her off the slab altogether. She tried to resist but it was useless, her muscles not yet recovered enough to even close her hand into a fist. "For too long we have been hunted by humans, chased as if we were prey instead of predator. No more. It is time for us to push back."

He closed his fingers more tightly still around her throat, until she thought he would tear through the flesh. Everything fading again. Going black. Only the cruel, unyielding voice filling her world.

"Yes, yes, I know, it's not your way. Or Vicente's. But you see...Vicente is gone. And you, daughter...you don't really have anything to say about it. In fact, I would like to think you won't be saying anything at all." Copyright ©; 2007 by Steve Niles, Ben Templesmith and Idea + Design Works, LLC

A Contribution to Vampire Literature
By Dr. K
My compliments to the authors; this is a well written book. Much better than its predecessor in the series "Rumors of the Undead (30 Days of Night)". Tight story, good character development, and contextually plausible. Thus, the reader finds himself/herself in the story. This duo is maturing as an author team and I'm looking forward to the next one. Follow these instructions to get the most out of this offering: find a quiet and dark place (wine is optional), get in a dark state of mind, and read. This book will induce some chills if you are prepared to read it. Cheers.

Great Read
By L. Leonard
If you are debating reading this book, stop debating it and just do it. I'm sure you can pick it up used for just a couple bucks.

My first introduction to anything 30 Days of Night was the book that preceded this one, Rumors of the Undead. While that book was quite good (good enough to make me hungry for more 30 Days of Night) this book really goes much further. The character development is great and relateable, the story is intense and has very little down-time. The authors blend the perfect amount of horror, suspense, drama and even comedy. Even better the book ties in old characters from the Original 30 Days of Night Graphic Novel and The Rumors of the Undead.

I'm thirsty, gotta go!

Story doesn't hold up to any level of scrutiny
By Brett Grossmann
Much better writing than the first novel in tho series. That doesnt say much. At least there is no big re-hash of the Barrow story. Its not perfect. You get silliness like vamps that come back from ashes. You get super vamps. He got bit twice. Uh…I would think all the vamps should start biting each other ASAP if it makes you more powerful. Lilith gets bit by 100's of vamps tho…and sorry no super powers. UGH. Rules are broken if it makes it easier to get the story done. It would seem that only the good guys get super powers when bitten twice. Only the good guys can come back from ashes. WTH?

Chapter One: Human Nutrition: An Evolutionary Perspective

In order to answer the question "What is a healthy diet?," it is important to first take a look at what our body is designed for. Is the human body designed to eat plant foods, animal foods, or both? Respectively, are we herbivores, carnivores, or omnivores?

While the human gastrointestinal tract is capable of digesting both plant and animal foods, there are indications that we evolved to digest primarily plant foods. Specifically, our teeth are composed of twenty molars, which are perfect for crushing and grinding plant foods, along with eight front incisors, which are well suited for biting into fruits and vegetables. Only our front four canine teeth are designed for meat eating, and our jaws swing both vertically to tear and laterally to crush, while carnivores' jaws swing only vertically. Additional evidence that supports the human body's preference for plant foods is the long length of the human intestinal tract. Carnivores typically have a short bowel, while herbivores have a bowel length proportionally comparable to humans'.

To answer the question of what humans should eat, many researchers look to other primates, such as chimpanzees, monkeys, and gorillas. These nonhuman wild primates are omnivores. They are also often described as herbivores and opportunistic carnivores in that although they eat mainly fruits and vegetables, they may also eat small animals, lizards, and eggs if given the opportunity. For example, the gorilla and the orangutan eat only 1 percent and 2 percent of animal foods as a percentage of total calories, respectively. The remainder of their diet is derived from plant foods. Since humans are between the weight of the gorilla and orangutan, it has been suggested that humans are designed to eat around 1.5 percent of their diet in the form of animal foods. However, most Americans derive well over 50 percent of their calories from animal foods.

Since wild primates fill up on wild fruit and other highly nutritious plant foods, those weighing one tenth the amount of a typical human ingest nearly ten times the level of vitamin C and much higher amounts of many other vitamins and minerals (see Table 1.1). How is this possible? One reason is that the cultivated fruit in an American supermarket is far different from the wild fruit of the primate's diet, having a slightly higher protein content and a higher content of certain essential vitamins and minerals. Cultivated fruit tends to be higher in sugars and, while very tasty to humans, it is not nearly as nutritious. In fact, it raises blood sugar levels much more quickly than its wild counterparts do.

There are other differences in the wild primate diet that are also important to highlight, such as a higher ratio of alpha-linolenic acid -- the essential omega-3 fatty acid -- to linoleic acid -- the essential omega-6 fatty acid. A higher ratio of omega-3 fatty acid decreases the likelihood of the development of inflammatory and chronic diseases as well as their severity. Finally, the wild primate diet is very high in fiber, while the average American diet is not. A high-fiber diet protects against heart disease and many types of cancer.

Determining what diet humans are best suited for may not be as simple as looking at the diet of wild primates. Humans have some significant structural and physiological differences compared to apes. The key difference may be our larger, more metabolically active brains. In fact, it has been theorized that a shift in dietary intake to more animal foods may have produced the stimulus for human brain growth. The shift itself was probably the result of limited food availability, which forced early humans to hunt grazing mammals such as antelope and gazelle. Archaeological data support this association -- humans' brains started to grow and become more developed at about the same time evidence shows an increase of animal bones being butchered with stone tools at early villages.

While improved dietary quality alone cannot fully explain why human brains grew, it definitely appears to have played a critical role. With their bigger brains, early humans were able to engage in more complex social behavior, which led to improved foraging and hunting tactics, which, in turn, led to even higher quality food intake that fostered additional brain evolution.

Data from anthropologists looking at evidence from hunter-gatherer cultures is providing much insight as to what humans are designed to eat. However, it is important to point out that these cultures were not entirely free to determine their diets. Instead, their diets were molded as a result of what was available to them. For example, the diet of the Inuit Eskimos is far different from that of the Australian Aborigines. Therefore, it may not be appropriate to answer the question "What should humans eat?" simply by looking at these studies alone.

Nonetheless, regardless of whether a hunter-gatherer community relied on animal or plant foods, the rate of diseases of civilization such as heart disease and cancers was extremely low.

How is this possible? One reason is that the meat our ancestors consumed was much different from the meat we find in the supermarket today. Domesticated animals have always had higher fat levels than their wild counterparts, but the desire for tender meat has driven the fat content of domesticated animals to 25 to 30 percent or higher compared to a fat content of less than 4 percent for free-living animals or wild game. In addition, the type of fat is considerably different. Domestic beef contains primarily saturated fats and virtually undetectable amounts of omega-3 fatty acids. In contrast, the fat of wild animals contains over five times more polyunsaturated fat per gram and has desirable amounts of beneficial omega-3 fatty acids (approximately 4 percent).

What conclusions can we draw from the evidence of the wild primate and hunter-gatherer diets about how we should eat today? Overwhelmingly, it appears that humans are better suited to a diet composed primarily of plant foods. This position is supported also by a tremendous amount of evidence showing that deviating from a predominantly plant-based diet is a major factor in the development of heart disease, cancer, strokes, arthritis, and many other chronic degenerative diseases. It is now the recommendation of many health and medical organizations that the human diet should focus primarily on plant-based foods, comprising vegetables, fruits, grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds.

The evidence supporting diet's role in chronic degenerative diseases is substantial. There are two basic facts linking the diet-disease connection:

1. A diet rich in plant foods is protective against many diseases that are extremely common in Western society.

2. A diet providing a low intake of plant foods is a causative factor in the development of these diseases and provides conditions under which other causative factors became more active.

The Pioneering Work of Denis Burkitt and Hugh Trowell

Much of the link between diet and chronic disease originated from the work of two medical pioneers: Denis Burkitt, M.D., and Hugh Trowell, M.D., editors of Western Diseases: Their Emergence and Prevention, first published in 1981. Although now extremely well recognized, the work of Burkitt and Trowell is actually a continuation of the landmark work of Weston A. Price, a dentist and author of Nutrition and Physical Degeneration. In the early 1900s, Dr. Price traveled the world observing changes in teeth and palate (orthodontic) structure as various cultures discarded traditional dietary practices in favor of a more "civilized" diet. Price was able to follow individuals as well as cultures over periods of twenty to forty years, and he carefully documented the onset of degenerative diseases as their diets changed.

Based on the extensive studies examining the rate of diseases in various populations (epidemiological data), including the groundbreaking work of Dr. Price and their own observations of primitive cultures, Burkitt and Trowell formulated the following sequence of events:

First stage: In cultures consuming a traditional diet consisting of whole, unprocessed foods, the rate of chronic diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer is quite low.

Second stage: Commencing with eating a more "Western" diet, there is a sharp rise in the number of individuals with obesity and diabetes.

Third stage: As more and more people abandon their traditional diet, conditions that were once quite rare become extremely common.

Examples of these conditions include constipation, hemorrhoids, varicose veins, and appendicitis.

Fourth stage: Finally, with full Westernization of the diet, other chronic degenerative or potentially lethal diseases, including heart disease, cancer, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout, become extremely common.

Since the publication in Western Diseases of Burkitt and Trowell's pioneering research, a virtual landslide of data has continually verified the role of the Western diet as the key factor in virtually every chronic disease, but especially in obesity and diabetes. In 1984, the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council established the Committee on Diet and Health to undertake a comprehensive analysis on diet and major chronic diseases. Their findings, as well as those of the U.S. surgeon general, the National Cancer Institute, and other highly respected medical groups brought to the forefront the need for Americans to change their eating habits to reduce their risk for chronic disease. Table 1.2 lists diseases with convincing links to a diet low in plant foods. Many of these now-common diseases were extremely rare before the twentieth century.

Trends in U.S. Food Consumption

During the twentieth century, food consumption patterns changed dramatically. Total dietary fat intake increased from 32 percent of calories in 1909 to 43 percent by the end of the century; carbohydrate intake dropped from 57 ...

Grenerally good book
By BR
I liked the presentation of the book. It has a list of all different kinds of foods and then gives the benefits.

But, I am not giving this book 5 stars because there is some incorrect or misleading information. For example, the book says (page 8) that the per capita of eggs was 37 in 1909, but according to the Department of Agriculture the per capita was 292.8 ([...] That's a big difference!

He mentions phytic acid, but he doesn't say what foods have them or how to deactivate them. (Phytates pull calcium, zinc, and magnisium out of the body. They are found in grains and seeds, and they can be deactivated by sprouting or soaking in water with some yogurt.)

He writes that vitamin B6 helps detoxify estrogen out of the body, but he fails to say that only about 10% of vitamin B6 is absorbed from plant foods while about 100% of B6 is absorbed from animal foods (_AJCN_ 1988: 863-7). The ironic thing is that he says to avoid ALL animal foods (even organic) if one has an estrogen problem.

I'm glad he says usable vitamin B12 is only found in animal foods.

Overall, it's a good book.

Grab a case of hilighters
By NHMaria
I am absolutely in love with this book. There is so much great information in this book that you will need a case of hilighters. This book has helped me change my entire lifestyle. I've lost weight which is a bonus. I just wanted to learn how to eat healthier but the weight loss is nice. As you read this book, it makes you want to run to the produce section of your local grocery store. The book is way thicker than I expected but the amount of information in this book is well worth how thick it is.

Heartbreak & Triumph: The Shawn Michaels Story (WWE), by Shawn Michaels

He is one of the most charismatic showmen ever to grace a WWE ring. He was HBK: The Heartbreak Kid - the most resilient champion in WWE. And pound for pound, he may well be the toughest. He was the first Grand Slam champion - the only competitor to hold every title WWE had to offer at the time. Weighing in at 225 pounds, he was WWE Champion on three occasions, defeating men who were close to twice his size. From the very beginning of his spectacular career Michaels gained a reputation for pushing his body to extremes. He was willing to go the limit: to do whatever he had to do to put on a stunning show - and eventually his body paid the price. In his early thirties, an age when most Superstars are hitting their prime, Michaels had to bow out of the spotlight, plagued by recurrent injuries which had ended - or so he thought - his career. But then, sensationally, after four years out of the ring, in June 2002 'The Showstopper' returned to a rapturous reception from which he has never looked back. He is now once again wrestling at his physical peak and it is a measure of the regard in which he is held that in late 2004 no less than 4 million WWE fans voted him the man they most wanted to see take on World Heavyweight Champion, Triple H at Taboo Tuesday. This is the full story of his truly remarkable comeback, and of his glittering twenty-year-plus career.

Complete with a candy coating.
By R. Howell
Shawn Michaels adds his name to the growing list of wrestling autobiographies. This is an enjoyable book but it is not the 'best one out there'. It does step away from the WWE correctness that saturate other books like Ric Flair's or Edge's but the book certainly could have been better. We get a nice coverage of Shawn's wrestling life/career and he talks about various big matches, inspiring wrestlers, the Kliq, and the infamous "Montreal screw-job" of Bret Hart. He ends with his meeting his wife Rebecca and being born-again. It's good to see that he is able to admit that he was a jerk through his career and has done his best to make ammends.

It's truly a nice pleasant book complete with its candy-coating. I'm proud that Michaels is able to show his Christianity and beliefs and that he has the forwithal to be public about it. However, this story of his life is a little too sweet and nice. It makes you wonder what he would have included had he not been born again and gave the 'dirty' side of his life with all the good. He's careful not to mention what drugs he used and surely there was more to his 'partying' than just getting drunk. He admirably avoids badmouthing too many fellow wrestlers but does give his apparent honest opinion on a few like Shane Douglas, Sid Viscous, and Bret Hart. I'm sure he wrote a story that his kids will be able to look at in a few years and praise him and thusly he may have eliminated the "torrid details" and sexual exploits his life possibly entailed before becoming a family man and man of God.

In all, it's an inspiring story of his life and worth reading to get some sense of where HBK is from and where he's going.

Poor, poor HBK.
By M. Williams
I bought this book on the notion that it would be an entertaining read and a great look at a mans career, of which Shawn has had a great one. In all honesty I thought he realised it a little early, especially since he has fought Hogan and Vince since, and I would have loved to have heard his thoughts on this, especially on the backstage issues involving the Hogan work. Since Have a Nice Day is my favourite autobiography, Ive pretty much set it as the template of which a wrestling bio should be set so I'll probably be refering to it a few times in the review.

Firstly, I want to point out. Am I a Shawn Michaels fan? No! Do I respect his work? Yes, very much. Its impossible not too. The man goes out and puts on a show every times hes in the ring, heck, the guy wrestled with a broken back just to get Steve Austin over. That demands respect. The book itself, begins telling tales of Shawns youth, and provide some very funny and humours tales, about his mother, his brother, school friends and his temper. While he doesnt go into huge detail like Mick Foley did, he paints a very interesting picture and its enjoyable to read about how he got into wrestling and his training. Again though, he doesnt go into as deep as Mick did in his book which hurts a little because you dont learn about the emotional and physical pain he goes through. More like 'he was great and gifted and he would do well'.

Once he gets through his early years and into his times with Marty and being the Rockers, the book goes down hill a little for me. Instead of offering funny stories, of which there could be many, he spends to much time in the book making himself look like the innocent victum, how he was always in the wrong place at the wrong time, how everyone hated him and no one understood him. Shawn was a piece of work, he admits it, but to many people have said to much of the same thing over the years to allow him a get out of jail free card. He lied his face off for nearly 7 years about the screwing of Bret Hart, even lying to his face and 'swearing to God' that he knew nothing about it, so to read about how he was innocent in so many of the dealings of what went on stretches the imagination a bit.

Especially that when you consider, Shawn was the top dog, the champion and always seemed to be in the main event shuffle, despite all these things happening to poor HBK. He always takes pot shot after pot shot against Bret and buries him on more than one occasion, claming he was the carrier and Bret was just the load. If you've watched Brets DVD, and heard Bret put Shawn over, despite how he feels about him, it just makes Shawn like incredibly petty. A great instance of his disliking for Bret is when he calls Bret 'not a great wrestler'. Now, Bret is a man who made any man he worked with look like a killer. Bret and Shawn hate eachother, theres no doubting this, but its Shawns argument that makes the statement laughable. He claims Bret only wrestled his way and that caused problems for Kevin (Diesel) in their matches. For the record, Kevin Nash has had 5 good matches in his whole career and 3 of those matches were with Bret. Now, this should easily point out that Bret made these matches work, but Shawn refuses to acknowledge this and buries Bret further.

If you can look past the sob stories, of which there are many and the knocks at Bret, at which there are many more, you'll enjoy the book. He does get mixed up and contradicts himself on a few occasions, claming how he didnt mind loseing to Bret, only then saying he DID mind loseing to him. Another funny point is when he says two good wrestlers (himself and Mr Perfect "Curt Hening") just couldnt have a classic match, conveniently forgetting that two good wrestlers (Bret Hart and Mr Perfect "Curt Hening") had two classic wrestling matches. He also conveniently forgets how he 'well knowingly' tried to hold down The Rock (which has lead to heat that exsists to this day between them.)

Its like I said, I am not a Shawn Michaels fan and knowing how he has had drug problems and having watched his shoot interview where he looks out of his mind and completely contradicts everything he says, it makes his sob stories in this book a LOT harder to believe, and will to anyone who has actually seen the shoot interview. He also doesnt go into any detail about the drugs he has been KNOWN to have taken, his backstage temper tantrums, which he has been KNOW to throw, especially when it involved him jobbing, or his holding down of other wrestlers. He seems to be trying much to hard to paint a wonderful picture of himself. This being said however, despites Shawns constant Bret bashing and sob stories, the book is a great read and any HBK fan should not go without it. It is really interesting to see how he met Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, Triple H and how he howned his character and adjusted it with the times. It also helps to provide an interesting look on his character and how he has changed since finding God.

Heart-breaking and heart-soaring.
By C.W. Fitch
"The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels, in recent years, has made his way to the top of my favorite pro wrestling character list. That rise is due to a little bias on my part, stemming from my respect of his courageously public profession of his faith. The fact remains, though, that very few people have contributed to and made an impact upon pro wrestling the way Shawn has. Whether you love him, or love to hate him, you know his name. That, plainly and simply, is what matters in the business.

This autobiography didn't crack through the bestseller list like his associates Mick Foley and "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, and that's mostly because Foley started the whole wrestler autobiography trend. Then, it was innovative. Today, it seems that every WWE superstar wants to tell his story, and to most fans it's become little more than a gimmick; another way for WWE to generate revenue and the wrestler to score some more royalties. That doesn't seem to be the case here.

Michael Shawn Hickenbottom spins a true-life yarn of his life, and it's wholesome, simple, and easy to read. There's nothing fancy about Shawn's writing style; by no means is he a "master" storyteller like Foley, who has gone on to write children's books. His paragraphs flow along like a lazy stream, but the stream's current increases just when it needs to, capturing readers and taking them on the occasional run down a tumultous rapid. The simple style delivers, and the way Shawn tells his story puts you in his hotel room, locker room, parents' house, bar, or wherever he happens to be at the time.

Everything you ever wanted or felt you needed to know about Michaels is revealed in this book. You'll not only relive some of the key moments in his career, but be privy to detailed events (from his perspective, of course) leading up to and after them as well. This really clues you in on what can happen behind the scenes in the wrestling business, and you'll find out quite a few things you may not have known about other WWE superstars. (Small word of warning here: you may want to brush up a little on wrestling terminology before diving into this book. Shawn did a good job explaining/defining almost every wrestling term he used throughout the book, but there are a few times when it seems he got excited about what he was writing and forgot that the reader may not know what he means when he uses words like "Gorilla Position" and "color". No big deal, but it's best to be prepared...)

The infamous "Montreal Screwjob" is described in detail in here, which is no surprise. Shawn's take, of course, makes Bret Hart out to be the bad guy, but the way he tells it, there are probably more than a few folks involved who would back him up on that. I'll just say it's hard not to take sides after reading that particular story.

As far as the rest of the book, there are the standard bits about being born, growing up, and what he did before going into wrestling. There's nothing particularly heart-stopping there, but there are a few morsels that will make for good trivia. Most of the conclusion focuses on Shawn's spiritual transformation, which is quite entertaining and insightful. In my case, at least, it earned more respect to the man.

The only thing I found a little disturbing about that aspect, though, is the way he describes Bret Hart. Instead of turning the other cheek, he tore Hart a new orifice in print and besmirched his name a little further. Now, I was never really a fan of Bret Hart, but it was rather brutal to say the least. Guess that's one thing that will scar both Hart and Michaels for all time.

Shawn's relationship with Vince McMahon, though, is what I found the most appealing about the read. While some may denounce it as corporate brown-nosing, I simply saw Michaels bringing out a side of McMahon that not many see. You'll read for yourself what I mean in several places throughout.

When all is read and done, Michaels strips himself down to a guy who is completely passionate about wrestling, and was (and still is) willing to do whatever it takes to ensure not only his, but the company's success. From his boyhood dream at age 12 to his current ramblings and rumblings in the WWE, it's a sometimes leisurely, sometimes intense read that maintains a simple, easy-to-follow pace that won't take more than a long weekend to finish. Afterwards, you'll be wiser, and perhaps more appreciative, not only of Michaels, but of the wrestling business as a whole.

Alternate Views of Heinlein
By John Nolley II
For those readers of Heinlein who have limited themselves to his Future History stories, his Lazarus Long saga, or perhaps his early Juveniles, Expanded Universe presents an interesting alternate view of Heinlein's writing including many stories not featured in other anthologies and a number of his nonfiction pieces as well.
"Solution Unsatisfactory" tells of an alternate ending to World War II where the US develops an intensely radioactive dust with selective half-life rather than the atomic bomb; its use on Germany and its parallel discovery by the Soviet Union bring the world into a Cold War many times worse than what the world truly experienced. In short, the balance of terror doctrine was and will always be a "solution unsatisfactory."
"PRAVDA Means TRUTH" is a short nonfiction piece on the dangers of a state-run media and its influence on the lives of citizens, based on true-life experiences Heinlein and his wife had while traveling to Russia at the same time Francis Gary Powers' U2 was brought down. Similarly, "Inside Intourist" tells of the Heinlein's experiences with the Soviet tourism agency (through which all travel had to be arranged). Contrary to some reviewers' comments, Heinlein never condescends upon the people of Russia and its former republics; he merely explains the dangers the people face from their oppressive government. He in fact often discusses how nicely the actual people of Russia treated him and his wife on their trip.
Many other stories and nonfiction pieces (some dated by their survivalist Cold War era themes) are included; another of interest is "No Bands Playing, No Flags Flying," which tells the slightly fictionalized tale of courage and TB treatments (which Heinlein himself underwent) in the pre-WW2 Navy. His survivalist pieces may seem dated or extremist today, yet for the cold war climate (and today's constant threat of terrorism), the message is still clear: those who are ready will survive catastrophes, and those who aren't may very well not.
Give this Heinlein anthology a chance; for those already versed in Heinlein's other works, Expanded Universe will offer a fresh look into the mind of one of science fiction's Grand Masters.

Hard-nosed, yet compassionate
By A Customer
When all is said and done, you can't help respecting Robert Heinlein. The man knew what he wanted to say, and by jiminy he went out there and said it... This book, along with "Grumbles from the Grave," probably cleaves closer to the heart of Heinlein's spirit than any three of his other books combined. It is a collection of short pieces: some nonfiction articles; others, slightly fictionalized accounts of very real political concerns. My favorite piece is "Solution Unsatisfactory," which was one of the earliest pieces in science fiction to deal so intelligently with the threat of nuclear war. Heinlein also includes a few accounts of trips that he and his wife made to the Soviet Union. They really tried hard to be open-eyed, open-minded observers of everything they saw. Things have changed in Russia since they were there, but it's worth reading just to sate one's appetite for Heinlein's distinctive voice. (For anyone interested in more up-to-date accounts of Russia, read anything by David Shipler.) Heinlein's time at Annapolis shows through in many of these pieces, as it does in virtually everything else he wrote. He seemed to have a very, very clear sense of America as a "country," or even as a "nation," as opposed to a "society." What I mean by this is that many of these pieces reflect a powerful understanding of the fundamental reality that America is a MILITARY entity, apart from being an economic juggernaut and a staunch promoter, on the international scene, of youth culture and our entertainment-based value system. Heinlein's military and political understanding is a disturbing one, but it is more securely grounded in serious, military realities than that of most authors writing today.
The pre-eminent concern in "Expanded Universe" is the threat of nuclear war. Heinlein, as anyone familiar with his writings will know, wrote firmly out of the Cold War tradition. "Solution Unsatisfactory" is the best example of this kind of thinking in this volume. Personally, I'd like to interject, I see absolutely no correlation whatsoever between the end of the Cold War and any putative decrease in the threat to mankind posed by nuclear weapons. I, for one, couldn't care less whether the dude aiming MIRV missiles at my kitchen speaks Russian, Arabic, Chinese, or, heck, even Navajo -- the point is that armed conflict will always exist, and now that nuclear weapons exist too, the clock is frankly ticking away the last seconds/hours/days/years/decades (decades? Let's hope so...) on mankind's time remaining on Earth.
For anyone who is genuinely disturbed by Heinlein's ideas, I want to make a few recommendations. Try to find a copy of "Nuclear Shelterist," by Walton McCarthy. It's out of print right now, but it's obviously worth trying to track down. Ask your friendly local librarian for help in finding it. Also -- if you can locate a copy of the British movie "Threads," you should see it. It's extremely frightening and graphic -- do NOT watch it with your kids in the house. I'm very serious about that. That said, it is an absolutely uncompromising overview of the currently accepted, likely aftermath of a nuclear war, extrapolated over a period of thirteen years after the war happens. It's horrifying enough that it might prompt you to get involved in some way. You might have to search a little to find the video -- not all video stores carry it. However, fifteen minutes of calling all the video stores in the yellow pages will probably be enough to track it down. Finally, I'd like to recommend "Hydroponic Home Food Gardens," by Howard Resh. If we ever have a nuclear war, indoor hydroponic gardens will be just about the only way of growing food successfully, and people who have them will have a VASTLY higher chance of surviving the worldwide economic chaos and food shortages which will definitely follow such a war. Whether you would actually be glad you survived is, of course, another question.
Well, I just wanted to make a little contribution, online, to the kind of concerns that Heinlein wrote about in "Expanded Universe." I like to think that he would have approved of my passing on those tips... Anyway, this book is fantastic. Buy it, please, and get copies for your friends. People need to be more aware of this stuff. I give this book seven hundred billion thumbs up.

Do Me, Do My Roots, by Eileen Rendahl

It's about healing.
After a couple of rough years, Emily is finally getting things back together. She doesn't need to re-do everything at work three times, her young daughter's soccer uniform is almost always clean the day of a game, and meals are pretty darn reliable, too. But hey, becoming a widow at thirty-three kind of knocks the starch out of you.
It's about family.
Then Emily's dad has an Event (only her mom would call a minor heart attack that -- what is it, a bar mitzvah?). Next, her sister Claudia's ex-husband starts stealing their kids' Ritalin for the high -- and wouldn't you replace it with The Pill to teach him a lesson? (His unexpected, uh, frontal development was just a howlingly funny bonus -- honest.) And then Emily's relentlessly sensible oldest sister, Leah, dumps her businessman fiancé for a rock musician.
It's about never letting them see your gray.
Now Jake, Emily's best friend, seems to be spending a lot of time at her house. Which she likes way too much. Which is kind of confusing. So what's a girl to do, but call an emergency meeting of the sisters' monthly hair-color-and-gossip session, to make the world seem sane again?

For the Simon sisters, hair dyeing is a ritual. The eldest, Leah, favors reds and blondes, while the middle sister, Claudia, prefers browns light and dark. The youngest, Emily, is thankful she doesn't have to worry about the pesky gray hairs that plague her sisters. But she has plenty of concerns of her own--she's still reeling from the death of her husband, Vince, and trying to care for their daughter, Abby. Luckily, Vince's best friend, Jake, is always there to help out, but Emily is starting to worry that she feels more than friendship for him. Claudia has been dating a series of bad men, and Leah is trying to find Mr. Right even as she falls for a sexy younger man. But a pair of health scares tries the trio's nerves and brings them closer together. Ultimately, the sisters' love for each other is the real strength of Rendahl's warm and touching novel. Chapter One: There Are Some Events to Which You Don't Want to Be Invited

Leah

One part Apricot Glaze (#38), one part Titian Red (#74), one part developer. Forty minutes. Some people are born to be redheads even though they're not born redheads.

Claudia

Two parts Medium Ash Brown (#28), one part developer. Twenty minutes. Roots a little light, but acceptable. Is acceptable good enough? We say no: we will not bow down to hair color mediocrity.

My alarm clock read 2:47 AM when the phone jarred me awake. After I'd hit the snooze button several times in a futile attempt to get the noise to stop and finally answered the phone, my mother's voice chirped unnaturally brightly into my ear. "Hello, dear. Did I wake you?"

"Well, yeah, it's almost three o'clock in the morning." In these situations, it's my usual practice to lie. Oh, no, I'll say. Of course I wasn't sleeping at 6:00 AM on a Saturday morning on one of those rarest of days that my daughter might actually sleep in. Why, I've already dusted and vacuumed the house and was getting ready to do push-ups.

Why do I do this? I have no idea.

Is there any shame to sleeping? There are news reports all the time about how sleep deprived we are, and how dangerous it is with drivers falling asleep at the wheel and machine operators pushing the wrong buttons. I'm actually performing a public service by sleeping. Maybe I'm worried that they'll think I'm lazy. At three o'clock in the morning, however, I figured subterfuge was pointless.

"I'm sorry, dear. It's just that..." Here she paused and tittered. No one can titter quite like my mother when under stress. Many have tried and failed. I myself usually let out horrible wheezy laughs or occasionally an hysterical squeal, but I can't titter worth a damn. "Well, your father has had an event."

An event? What, did he suddenly get up at two in the morning and decide to have a bar mitzvah, and they were calling to invite me?

"Mama," I said. "What are you talking about?"

"Oh, dear, well, it's just..." Her tone brightened more; soon she'd be chittering like a demented squirrel. "Your sister's here. I'll let her explain."

I listened to the phone being passed, hugging my knees under the blanket. My sister Leah's terse voice came over the line. "Daddy's had a heart attack. Find some place to park Abby and get your ass to the hospital."

I found them behind curtain number seven in the ER. Trust me, if Monty Hall had ever offered this as an option, Let's Make a Deal would have been a much tenser show. Choose Curtain Number One and you win an all-expense-paid vacation to beautiful Hawaii. Choose Curtain Number Two and you get a lifetime supply of Rice-A-Roni, the San Francisco Treat. Choose Curtain Number Three and we'll ram a really big needle into your wrist and shove a tube up...well, you get the point.

Tonight behind Curtain Number Seven, my sisters and mother sat watching my father's heartbeat on a monitor screen with more interest than they'd jointly showed in anything since the moon walk.

I kissed my father's forehead. It felt clammy against my lips. He looked kind of yellow and a lot smaller than he had the day before. "How ya doin', Daddy?"

He shrugged. "I've been better."

Under the circumstances, it seemed as good an answer as any.

Claudia jumped up and gave me a quick hug. She looked like she'd been dressed for hours. She had on a pair of khaki flat-front pants and a really cute sweater. Her makeup looked perfect and her hair didn't even look like she'd slept on it.

I had pulled on a pair of jeans under the oversize thermal shirt I'd worn to bed and thought I'd done the world a favor by brushing my teeth. Over that, I had on a hooded zip-front sweatshirt and one of Vince's old baseball jackets. I'd pulled my barely brushed hair back into a ponytail and pulled a baseball cap on over that. Mascara hadn't crossed my mind, much less my lashes.

"Where's Abby?" Claudia wanted to know.

"I wrapped her up in a blanket and took her to Kim's. She never even woke all the way up. I hope she doesn't wake up there and freak out."

Claudia gave me a sympathetic grimace. Her boys are old enough to stay alone.

"Come on into the hallway. I'll fill you in."

We stepped out from behind the curtain and walked a few steps on the yellowed linoleum. The glare and hum from the fluorescent lights were already starting to get to me. "Exactly how much time did Mama spend with the admitting clerk?" I asked.

"I'm not sure. Why?"

"Because when I stopped to ask how to find you guys, she said, 'You must be Emily.' Then she hugged me and offered me condolences on my loss."

"She advised me to sue Mark for more child support." Claudia popped her gum. There's something about the way she chews gum that always fascinates me. Maybe it's because her mouth is such a perfect little cupid's bow and her lips are so raspberry red. Abby had tried to lick them once when she was a baby, as if they were some kind of lollipop. I find myself mesmerized by Claudia's mouth when she pops her gum like that. I stared at it now, barely registering the words she spoke while I watched her lips move. It's like when you're driving and you find yourself more caught up in the rhythm of the broken yellow line in the middle of the road than in what's actually on the road in front of you.

The unending buzz from the light was like a siren call to the headache that was starting in my right temple. "Spread," it whispered. "Encircle her whole head." My eyes felt gritty.

"So what's the deal with Daddy?"

"Oh, yeah." Claudia jumped as if the question came out of nowhere. "They think he's had a small heart attack. It doesn't look like there's any permanent heart damage, but it is a warning."

"A warning of what?"

"I don't know, Emily. They have to do more tests."

"What kind of tests?" I started to feel a little frantic; I didn't like the sound of any of this. Heart attacks? Damage to heart muscles? Tests? The thought of sitting in waiting rooms again, hoping a doctor would come with a little good news, had my skin prickling. My lungs tightened at the memory of the hours I'd spent in this hospital and how little they were able to do in the end.

"Emily, I don't know! He's only been here an hour and I only got here about fifteen minutes ahead of you. Now chill out. I know it's hard for you to be here, but you're going to have to ride this out with the rest of us. Try just to deal with what's in front of you."

I felt tears start to slip out underneath my lids. I hadn't even felt them start. No chance to fight them at all. "Sorry," I mumbled.

She hugged me again. Have I mentioned that my sister Claudia gives the best hugs ever? "It's all right. Let's go sit with the others."

When we got back, a doctor who didn't look old enough to drive was checking out all the readouts from the various parts of my father's body that were hooked up to machines. I gathered from the way his hands trembled that he'd either had way too much coffee or Leah had already been working him over. Even at four o'clock in the morning with her hair in a jumble, she can be pretty formidable.

Claudia said hello and the doctor turned to smile at us. It was a mistake. I understand the need for orthodontia, but this poor guy's braces made even Doogie Howser jokes something beyond a cheap shot.

"Dr. Hill is an M.D., Ph.D. from Northwestern," my mother informed us with a proprietary note in her voice. She has been wearing her dark, remarkably more-pepper-than-salt hair in the same no-nonsense way since I was in diapers. It's a sensible cut. Short, but not too short. Takes advantage of her natural wave, but not too curly. My mother doesn't like a lot of curls. Or a lot of frills. She likes things simple and straightforward. She likes things that make sense. She likes for men and women in their thirties to be married to people of approximately the same age, socioeconomic background, religion, and color as themselves.

She was clearly revving up to fix one of my sisters up with Dr. Metal Mouth, even though he looked young enough to be jailbait. I was grateful that she generally left me alone these days, though she'd started making noises about Derek Zaretsky, a boy that I'd hated since we used to carpool with his family to third-grade Sunday School, and saw no reason to like any better now that he and his wife had just divorced. He was, however, a stockbroker, which made him third only to a doctor or a lawyer as a son-in-law candidate. She seemed to have missed the fact that Derek had stopped growing in fifth grade or so and I now towered over him by about five inches, or that he was still struggling with that whole adolescent skin thing. She claimed that oily skin would help him age well by delaying wrinkles.

Claudia jumped in to save the day before Mama got going with introducing Braces Boy to her single daughters.

Claudia is an emergency room nurse and she knows all the right questions to ask. Suddenly things moved smoothly. Nurses filled out forms and made phone calls. Orderlies showed up and pushed beds. My father checked into a room. We trooped wearily down the halls, carrying the plastic bag that held his clothes and shoes.

His belongings seemed pathetic enclosed in that bag. The shoes, pants, and shirts looked forlorn and abandoned somehow. As if Daddy hadn't changed clothes but had shed them instead; left them behind him the way a butterfly leaves a cocoon or a snake leaves an outgrown skin.

The few windows we passed reflected our sad little parade back at us against the complete blackness outside. It was still the middle of the night. Inside, everything was overly lit, like it always is in hospitals. Mama's sensible shoes -- I think she and her friends could single-handedly keep Rockport in business -- made little squeaking noises on the linoleum floor. Somehow this all made me amazingly weary. The lights, the squeaking shoes, the beep beep of machines as we walked passed the semi-open doors of patients sleeping that in-between sleep that people sleep in hospitals...I wanted to lie down on the floor and doze off myself. We kept walking.

Daddy looked so tiny in the hospital bed. I remember when I thought he was the biggest, strongest man on earth, when he'd lift me up in the air and I'd feel like I was flying. Part of me still wanted to think that, still wanted him to lift me over his head while I squealed and giggled. He can't even do that to Abby anymore. Sometimes reality just sucks.

We lined up in age order to kiss him good night, just like we had when we were little girls. Leah first, then Claudia, then me. I kissed his forehead and whispered, "Good night, Daddy." I didn't trust my voice not to waver if I said it any louder.

He grabbed my hand and pressed it against his cheek. The light gray stubble scratched my hand. "Don't work yourself up. This will be all right."

I blinked and tried not to let my chin quiver. "Sure it will. I'm just tired." I tried to smile.

He tried to smile back.

Neither of us achieved much success.

We split up in the parking lot. Leah followed my mother home, to make sure she got there all right. Knowing Leah, she probably went in and made her a cup of tea, too, yet would still be at her desk by 8:30 AM I retrieved Abby from my friend Kim's house and tucked her back into bed. She never stopped snoring. I doubted if she'd remember any of it the next day. I wished I wouldn't. I crawled back into my own bed, pulled the blankets up to my neck, and started to shake.

Did not finish, depressing
By Bookzilla
Did not finish, depressing.
No disrespect to the author and the heartbreak. Before the story begins the author talks about her real life husband dying of a brain tumour and the subsequent turmoil.

The actual story starts with the main female character, Emily, awakened by a phone call at 2:47am. Her mom is calling to tell Emily her father has had a heart attack.
Emily's husband had died of cancer.
And the story's sadness marches on.

No desire to finish or follow this author.
Remember this is my personal opinion and does not reflect on her heartbreak, nor the pain of others's loss.

Great "deep" chick lit
By B. Billerbeck
I have to say, I don't think the cover does this book justice. It's about so much more than the cover implies: family relationships, deep wounds, love of those around you, and yet all told in humorously REAL form. There are a few chick lit authors who have the ability to delve deep into your psyche, and still make you laugh and have a good time. I think this author is there, and has a long future ahead of her. YAY! She's a humorous Maeve Binchy!

The Painted Kiss: A Novel, by Elizabeth Hickey

Gustav Klimt, one of the great painters of fin de siècle Austria—and the subject of Helen Mirren’s latest film, Woman in Gold—takes center stage in this passionate and atmospheric debut novel, which reimagines the tumultuous relationship between the Viennese painter and Emilie Flöge, the woman who posed for his masterpiece The Kiss, and whose name he uttered with his dying breath.

Vienna in 1886 was a city of elegant cafés, grand opera houses, and a thriving and adventurous artistic community. It is here where the twelve-year-old Emilie meets the controversial libertine and painter. Hired by her bourgeois father for basic drawing lessons, Klimt introduces Emilie to a subculture of dissolute artists, wanton models, and decadent patrons that both terrifies and inspires her. The Painted Kiss follows Emilie as she blossoms from a naïve young girl to one of Europe's most exclusive couturiers—and Klimt's most beloved model and mistress. A provocative love story that brings to life Vienna's cultural milieu, The Painted Kiss is as compelling as a work by Klimt himself.

From Publishers Weekly
Hickey imagines the bonds between Gustav Klimt and his younger lover—whose name he pronounced with his dying breath—in her expressively written debut. Before Emilie Flöge became the owner of a successful Viennese fashion house and Klimt became a famed, controversial painter, she was a privileged 12-year-old reluctantly taking drawing lessons and he was her starving artist teacher. From her WWII hideaway in the Austrian countryside in 1944, where she has transported Gustav's drawings ("all I could bring from Vienna... [perhaps] the only things of his to survive"), the aged Emilie flashes back to her fin-de-siècle hometown. Hickey traces the changing relationship between Klimt and his protégé from when she first became his art student as an adolescent through their on-again, off-again romance as she matures to their complicated relationship that culminates in the famed painting The Kiss. While the novel bears some obvious similarities to Girl with a Pearl Earring, it doesn't quite have that novel's power. But Hickey's language is sensual, lush and unhurried, and the prose wears its author's research gracefully. (Apr.)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* This first novel, which springs boldly to the reader's attention as an admirably accomplished, beguilingly effortless story, is based on the lives of two actual historical figures. Hickey takes us back to the lush elegance of fin-de-siecle Vienna, "the most beautiful, cosmopolitan city in the world"--back to when the emperor still ruled divinely yet the arts were breaking old barriers. Gustav Klimt, a denizen of Viennese bohemia, has already made a painter's name for himself when a well-to-do businessman commissions him to draw his young daughters' portraits. Thus the lives of this permanent fixture in the world's artistic firmament and his mistress-to-be, Emilie Floge, intersect. Alternating flash-forwards to mid-World War II, when the Old World truly crumbled and Klimt was long dead, frame the story with a perfect nostalgia for the novel's "real" time: the beautifully expressed charting of the growing relationship between Klimt and Emilie, who eventually runs a fashion house in the Austrian capital and dresses all the ladies of the arts world. Hickey possesses a comfortably secure voice in sharing her understanding of the nature of this unsordid affair and her knowledge of the glamorous but teetering-on-the-edge time and place. Brad Hooper

Highly enjoyable read
By Mari V.
I loved this book. The story, the pace, the characters, the way it was written. Everything flowed. I felt connected to the characters and it became the perfect, enjoyable book.
I believe the liberties the author took fitted the story perfectly, and all the characters, even ones that appear for no more than a few pages are very well developed and work to enhance the story.
Although the focus of the story is the relationship between Gustav Klimt and Emilie Flöge, there are enough insights into his work, his state of mind and historic events to make it a very complete book.
Loved it, and will look forward to reading more from Elizabeth Hickey.

He's Just Not That Into Her
By Diana Faillace Von Behren
Poor Emilie Floge. Novelist Elizabeth Hickey allows her to tell her story--well, her story as she sees it--of reserved obsession in "The Painted Kiss."

Subject of three of Gustav Klimt's works--she was the sister of his brother Ernst's wife, Helene, Emilie worships Gustav from almost the moment she, as a precocious twelve-year-old, sets eyes on him. Almost twelve years her senior, Klimt regards her with a passion that author Hickey has difficulty defining. After all, no one knows the nature of the relationship with the flamboyant Klimt with this self-assured and successful woman of Fin-de-Siecle Vienna. Were they lovers? Platonic confidantes? Players in an open relationship? Neither married although Klimt had numerous casual and significant sexual relationships with countless women from either end of the social spectrum that resulted in a reported fourteen illegitimate children. Related through marriage and identified as seemingly beloved companions that shared lifelong annual vacations to Lake Attersee, numerous almost daily correspondences and confidences, and a fashion salon that produced Floge/Klimt-designed reform (unstructured requiring no corset) clothing along with Parisian knock-offs, Emilie and Gustav lived the bohemian life during a time of great psychological speculation where the goal of sex according to Freud was pleasure. In "The Painted Kiss," novelist Elizabeth Hickey suggests that while Emilie Floge regarded Gustav Klimt as the lover of her dreams, she was never fully able to solely capture his attentions despite their apparent closeness and the fact that her name was the last word he spoke as he died from pneumonia. Simply put, Klimt's stable of women was as lively as the Spanish Riding School where airs above the ground abound. He had way too many women to explore, paint and devour to be satisfied with only Ms Floge. Sadly, for her he just wasn't into her that way.

Author Hickey tries earnestly to help Emilie understand Gustav's nature and she does a believable job of recreating the torturous insecurity this woman must have felt if she had monogamous feelings for him which he did not share. Floge never married, but Hickey's account of her emotional history, remains, of course, fictional. We have no first hand or third person testimony to collaborate or contradict what actually took place in the minds and hearts of these enigmatic characters. Nonetheless, Hickey uses the Klimt timeline as he creates his highly criticized Beethoven Frieze, secedes from the Viennese Artists' Society and explores the sensual mystery of women in his study of nudes and eroticism and succeeds critically and financially in his Golden Phase to probe the conundrum of the man himself. Emilie acts as main first person narrator. Her story begins at its end in 1944, as she finds herself fleeing Vienna for Attersee as the Russians begin to occupy the city. Time moves forward as she examines her feelings for the deceased Klimt and the preservation of his remarkable body of work and then in retrospect from the moment of her first sighting of him with her young girl's perspective. Interspersed between the aftermath tale of 1944 and Emilie's chronological telling of Klimt's rise to become one of Vienna's most well-known artists, Hickey presents a famous study, drawing or painting and then fleshes out the details behind the work-- she tells of his relationships with various models and mothers of his children and of the creation of his most well-known work, "The Kiss" for which Emilie herself was reputed to pose.

As Hickey attempts to base her novel on known facts which history cannot change, she is left at best with a muddled portrait of a rather unknown woman. Emilie did own a fashion salon with her two sisters. She was Gustav Klimt's friend and was photographed with him at Attersee and in clothing that they designed together. However, this small documented history does not give anyone insight into thoughts and desires. We have little clue as to what Ms Floge's ideas were with regard to the lifestyle options that Klimt embraced through example. Floge was not a writer and did not opine thoughts with regard to sexuality or eroticism; if anything her relaxed clothing tells us that she wanted comfort rather than whale-boned support and was not afraid to invest money (or Klimt's money) in expressing this fact. With little backup, Hickey connects the dots and comes up with a storyline that uses Klimt's creative timeline as a base. Unfortunately, she must use creative license to develop Emilie more fully as her narrator.

What that leaves us with is a novel that declares Emilie Floge and Gustav Klimt as companions that indulge in sex infrequently--but as what? An expression of love? Exercise? Release? If indeed Ms Floge did model for Klimt's "The Kiss," can we interpret this as some sort of declaration of everlasting affection and passion? Or simply that Emilie's features fit with his composition and that the act of creating needed a physical manifestation?

Where does that leave Emilie in all this? She loves but is only loved marginally? Like the wives of architect Frank Lloyd Wright as depicted by T. C. Boyle in "The Women: A Novel" and Nancy Horan in "Loving Frank: A Novel," Klimt's females shrink in the presence of his immense ego. In the world according to Klimt, they act only as muses fueling his creative genius; their bodies supply mystery that he pondered artistically and wished to explore.

Hickey does a descent job with the scant information with which she has to work. Her portrayal of Klimt seems to emulate that of a great artist questioning the new ideas emanating from a new century. Like most long term unmarried men of any era, he deals with his women by seeing them only in a certain way; he does not allow them to touch him deeply. Impulsively, he moves on like a bee from flower to flower breathing deeply of beauty of which he partakes, captures and then escapes. Hickey suggests that Emilie was the only one who touched his heart in any meaningful way even if she can't quite figure out the true essence of their relationship and can only fill in the many blanks with speculation.

Bottom line? "The Painted Kiss" by Elizabeth Hickey attempts to define the relationship between artist Gustav Klimt and his sister-in-law, Emilie Floge. Gallantly, Hickey paints a delightful panorama of fin-de-siecle life that mirrors the timeline of Klimt's artistic accomplishments. The great romance hinted at on the back book cover, however, is fraught with too much speculation, rendering Ms Floge just one of those sad women whose man, as they say, just wasn't into her. Unfortunately, as most of the Floge/Klimt dynamic is a confection of Hickey's imagination, I wonder how much of the real connection I will take away with me. Will I retain only the fiction and none of the facts? It's a good read nonetheless--easy format with free-flowing language that makes for some insightful thinking about the whole man/woman thing. Recommended. Check out Gustav Klimt: From Drawing to Painting to ponder Klimt's art and world. Fascinating.
