Chapter One

Putting Your Weight on Project Status

You have made the important decision to lose weight, and you want to do it right this time. But to do so, you must be willing to put your weight on what I like to call Project Status. This means that you must consciously decide to actively, purposely work on improving your weight and your fitness level each and every day. Putting your weight on Project Status means giving your health and vitality a new, higher priority in your life, such that they become of conscious importance to you. You stay committed to working on them, disciplining yourself by working on all seven keys to weight loss freedom. (I've summarized the keys for you in the box on pages 25-26.)

You get out of this project -- your weight -- what you put into it. It will be from your commitment to set a personal standard for yourself -- one that says you will not quit and you will not push aside your goals for a trimmer, healthier body -- that your success will follow. You must be willing to reach for what you want and reach right now. To be in Project Status means that you do not neglect to take care of yourself first, and now is the time to start doing that.

Before beginning the nutritional plan in this guide, you must take some essential first steps that will help you reach the peak of your effectiveness, and lay the groundwork for constructive, lasting change. This is very important -- don't hurry through these initial steps or avoid this part of the process. Take it seriously, and I promise you that you will have the foundation for the most effective and dramatic changes you have ever made in your weight.

Step 1:

Determine your get-real weight.

Your get-real weight is the healthiest and most realistic weight for you, based on your height, your bone structure, and your sex. It is not necessarily the weight of your youth, but rather a state of health and well-being that is congruent and in harmony with how you are physically and genetically configured. It is the weight that is "right" for you -- a stable, comfortable weight, at which you look good, feel good, and lovingly accept yourself from the inside out.

You can figure out your get-real weight by using my Body Weight Standards, a system I developed for my patients; it is a modified and more realistic version of height-weight tables. Though not perfect, these body weight standards are more reflective of what can be achieved and certainly a better measure of where most people should be, weight-wise.

Using the Body Weight Standards chart below, identify where you should be, so that you can move forward from where you are now. The lower end of the ranges are for small-boned people; the upper end, for larger-boned individuals. Be honest here: Don't subjectively say you are small-boned, when in fact, you are just the opposite. Your get-real weight is your target. Record it in the space above.

Step 2:

Check and record your current weight and waist measurement before you start.

Do two things: First, step on the scale to weigh yourself to determine your starting point. Then, measure your waist with a tape measure positioned one inch above your navel. Taking waist measurements is important because weight distribution -- where you carry weight on your body -- can affect your health, for better or for worse. A too-large waistline circumference, for example, places you at greater risk for heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers.

A waist measurement of 35 inches or more for women and 40 inches or more for men is cause for concern and may indicate that you are at risk for heart disease or diabetes. Keeping tabs on this simple measurement can protect you in some important ways.

Although I do not advocate obsessive weighing and measuring, you do need to monitor your progress toward your get-real weight with some regularity and reasonable frequency. You should weigh yourself at least at one- or two-week intervals to stay on target; then record your weight in a notebook or journal. The scales should show a weight loss that may be quite dramatic in the beginning, eventually tapering off to a steady, even loss of a few pounds each week. If you aren't dropping pounds at a steady rate, or if you gain weight, you should be motivated to course-correct some aspect of the weight loss plan to make it more effective, including changing your behavior so that it is harder for you to cheat.

Weigh yourself at the same time each week, because your weight fluctuates throughout the day, and you can weigh more at night than you do in the morning. Promise yourself you will not self-destruct if the scale moves up a few pounds, but instead make this a priority for action-oriented repair.

At monthly intervals, remeasure your waist and record these measurements. Watching your pounds and inches diminish will help reinforce your resolve and keep you moving in the right direction.

Step 3:

Clear your environment of "low-response cost, low-yield foods."

The presence of food is one of the most insistent of all triggers to eat or overeat, and you know this yourself if you have ever tried to sample just a few healthy items from a buffet table. This step is thus about removing tempting foods from your environment, including your home, office, car, or anywhere you store food. After all, you can't eat what is not there.

Specifically, I would like you to take an inventory of your environment, looking for and tossing out what I call "low-response cost, low-yield foods." So that you understand the terminology, these foods require very little response from you when you eat them. In plain terms, they are foods that you just gulp and gain -- easily ingested, overly convenient, and requiring little or no preparation on your part.

An excellent example of a low-response cost food is a microwaveable bean burrito. You zap it in your microwave in a matter of seconds, no preparation required. When you eat it, you don't even have to chomp on the burrito; it just slithers down your throat in a few quick gulps. What happens is that you consume an incredibly high number of calories and fat in a very short period of time.

Most low-response cost foods are also low-yield foods. That means they provide very little in the way of good nutrition, with a lot of calories packed into a very small amount of food. Sugar is an example of a low-yield food. It is very high in calories but practically devoid of nutrition, and for these reasons, it is best kept off-limits if you want to successfully control your weight.

Low-yield foods are engineered to be addictive; loaded with sugar, extra fat, calories, too much salt, and unhealthy additives; and of questionable nutritional value. What's more, they are processed and refined; that is, they have been milled or altered in some fashion that devalues their nutrition by extracting fiber and other nutrients.

To sum up, low-response cost, low-yield foods:

• Invite and promote fast, uncontrollable eating.

• Need little or no preparation time.

• Require little chewing or effort to eat. The food slides down your throat, and you barely have to chew it.

• Melt in your mouth.

• Can be too easily eaten straight from a package or container.

• Are highly processed.

• Are light on nutrition.

One of the most offending characteristics of low-response cost, low-yield foods is that they are hunger drivers. These foods do not keep you satisfied for very long and may make you hungrier later. Here's why: After you eat these foods, your body's natural stop-eating signals don't even have time to kick in. It takes about twenty minutes from the time you eat something until the hypothalamus in your brain shuts off your appetite. There's absolutely no way that burrito can offer any satisfying effects when it's overly easy to wolf it down in a matter of seconds. So you keep eating more and more of this stuff until you've eaten way beyond the point of fullness; and the unfortunate fact is that you're overfed with unnecessary calories and fat.

On pages 418 to 707 of this food guide, you'll find a comprehensive listing of low-response cost, low-yield foods by category. These are foods you want to limit or avoid. For now, here is an abbreviated list that will give you an idea of what to toss out:

• Cookies, candy, and any high-calorie, sweetened snack foods.

• Salty foods such as potato chips, pretzels, taco chips, nuts, and other packaged munchies.

• Sweet rolls, pastries, and doughnuts.

• Cakes, snack cakes, pies, and other baked sweets.

• Presweetened, sugary breakfast cereals.

• White bread, white rolls, white buns -- anything that is not whole grain.

• Crackers that are not whole grain.

• Cold cuts.

• Ice cream and high-sugar frozen desserts.

• Quick-fix prepared foods such as pizza, fried entrées and dinners, and microwaveable sandwiches.

• Syrups, jams, and jellies.

• High-fat spreads, peanut butter, and dips.

• Sugared soft drinks and beverages, including flavored coffees.

• Alcoholic beverages.

• Any packaged food in which sugar is listed as one of the first three ingredients.

• Any food that can be classified as "junk food."

• Any food that you habitually binge on.

Ridding your environment of low-response cost, low-yield foods is one of the best moves you can take toward setting yourself up for success. It helps you get past needing to feel motivated all the time over trying to lose weight. When your enthusiasm flags and your willpower conks out -- which it will -- you need to have your environment set up in such a way that it supports you. This crucial step of eliminating low-response cost, low-yield foods does this for you.

Step 4.

Stock your kitchen with "high-response cost, high-yield foods."

By "high-response cost foods," I mean foods that require a great deal of work and effort to prepare and to eat. The work output, or response on your part, that is required to ingest these foods is high, whereas the calorie payoff -- although healthy -- is low. A good example of a high-response cost, high-yield food is a ripe, juicy apple. It is coarse and takes a lot of chewing and grinding to get it down. It is also packed with fiber, which keeps your stomach from emptying too rapidly.

Why is this important? The fact that you must take time to prepare these foods, and that they take effort to chew, eat, and digest, is a real advantage to weight control. Why? Because high-response cost foods defeat the urge to eat on impulse and therefore support better control.

High-response cost foods are thus hunger suppressors, meaning they can control and curb your hunger. Because they take longer to eat, your body has more time to receive stop-eating signals from your hypothalamus. By the time you chew and ingest these foods, you're starting to feel full, so there is little chance that you will overeat. You will be amazed at how little food you'll eat, yet how full and satisfied you'll feel after eating it.

Most high-response cost foods also happen to be "high-yield foods." High-yield foods are those that supply a lot of nutrients -- in the form of carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other food components -- relative to the low amount of calories they contain.

High-yield foods are generally those of a more pure, basic variety and are closer to the state in which they are found in nature. They have not been critically changed during food processing, and thus are not usually laced with added sugar, fat, additives, and other health-defeating ingredients. High-yield foods are abundant in fiber, a weight-control ally that promotes feelings of fullness, stabilizes your blood sugar, and thus keeps your hunger at bay so that you're less likely to overeat.

High-yield foods such as fruits and vegetables are colorful too, a sign that they are plentiful in important food factors that reduce your risk of disease.

To recap, high-response cost, high-yield foods are those that:

• Take time and effort to fix.

• Require a great deal of chewing and ingestion energy.

• Cannot be eaten quickly.

• Suppress your hunger and curb your cravings.

• Are not "convenience foods" in any sense of the word.

• Supply a healthy balance of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other nutrients.

For successful weight control, stock your kitchen with high-response cost, high-yield foods. There is a comprehensive list of these foods starting on page 150, and you should become very familiar with them because they form the centerpiece of nutrition for healthy weight control. For now, and as you begin this plan, make sure you have these foods on hand:

• Poultry, such as chicken and turkey breasts (prepared without skin).

• Fresh, frozen, or canned seafood (nothing that is breaded, however).

• Lean cuts of meat.

• Fresh eggs.

• Fresh fruits and vegetables. Frozen is fine too, since they've been chilled immediately after harvesting and may contain more nutrients than fresh produce that has been sitting on the shelf or in your refrigerator. Canned fruits and vegetables are acceptable, but may contain high levels of sodium.

• Whole grains and cereals such as brown rice, bulgur, oatmeal, rice, barley, and millet.

• High-fiber cereals. Although a packaged product, these cereals are specially formulated with added fiber -- a hunger-suppressing ingredient in high-response cost grains and cereals.

• Reduced fat or fat-free dairy products such as skim milk, low-fat milk, sugar-free yogurt, and low-fat cheeses.

• Healthy fats such as olive oil, canola oil, and nuts and seeds. These fats appear to delay hunger and help you feel more satisfied after eating a meal that contains them.

Step 5:

Prioritize exercise into your life.


The fit, in-shape people of this world are doing something right -- that something is exercise. Exercise burns calories; in fact, you can lose a pound of fat in ten exercise sessions of approximately forty-five minutes to one hour each, provided you do not take in a surplus of calories. The more food you burn off through exercise, the less you store as fat. Exercise also accelerates your metabolism, the physiological process that converts food into energy, so that you are burning up more calories even at rest.

There's something else at work, too: Food behavior and exercise behavior are highly interactive, with a powerful connection operating between the two. If you exercise on a regular basis, a rather amazing phenomenon occurs: You'll begin to experience a weakening desire to overeat. Your food behavior will begin to change almost automatically, and you'll make healthier food choices as a matter of routine.

For effective weight control, it is best to start an established exercise program that involves three to four hours a week of aerobic activity such as brisk walking, biking, jogging, aerobic dancing, playing tennis, aerobic exercise machines (treadmill, stair-climber, and so forth), or swimming.

Added to your aerobic exercise program should be weight training, at least two to three times a week. Weight training just happens to be one of the most powerful ways to rejuvenate and speed up your metabolism. It helps burn body fat (nearly 100 percent of the weight you lose is pure fat if you weight-train). And it builds firm, well-developed muscle while you're losing weight. More muscle translates into a faster metabolism. The reason for this is that muscle tissue demands much more oxygen and calories to sustain itself than fat tissue does. Fat tissue, by contrast, is relatively inactive, while muscle is constantly burning fuel at a rapid rate even while you're at rest. When you add muscle to your body through weight training, your metabolic rate goes up and stays up twenty-four hours a day.

Weight training also makes maintaining your weight loss much easier and more automatic. In fact, a number of studies have found that weight training stands out as a proven lifestyle strategy for keeping excess weight off over the long term. So for healthy, ongoing weight management, you need to consider weight training.

Supporting your weight loss by exercising is a real chance for you to get permanent control of your weight, no matter how long it has been since you last exercised.

Step 6:

Create accountability.

The next important step before getting started requires that you make yourself accountable with regard to your get-real goal weight. This means enlisting someone who will serve as your "teammate," someone to whom you commit to make periodic reports. This person should come from your relational circle of support (explained in key 7): family members and friends who you consider to be the closest people in your life -- the people you trust and value most. Figure out who would most strongly support what you want to accomplish and who would be willing and available to act in this capacity. Your teammate will be the person to whom you will have to confess if you fail to do what you plan to do.

At least once a week, if not daily, report on your compliance with your food plan, your exercise progress, the number of pounds you've lost, or other measures of progress. Knowing that you will check in with someone tomorrow keeps you on track today.

Your Personalized Food Diary

When you start this plan, keep a "personalized food diary" in which you accurately record everything you eat and drink, as well as other elements of relevance, such as your energy intake (calories). Whether you like it or not, calories still do count when it comes to weight control, so you do need to pay some degree of attention to how many calories you're taking in. Now don't lock up on me here. I am not asking you to become tediously preoccupied with counting calories. What I am suggesting is that you keep track of your calories for perhaps just a week or two, in order to make sure that you are not overindulging on overlooked calories.

Becoming knowledgeable about the calorie counts of foods you typically eat helps keep you on track in terms of how much you're eating. The calorie information in this food guide will provide valuable, at-your-fingertips reference material for doing that.

Use the Food Diary to Plan Your Meals

One important way to use the personalized food diary below is to preplan what you will eat and drink each day. By this, I mean that you commit to paper your menu for the day, including three meals and two snacks, then eat only the foods on that menu. The significance of having a food plan, prepared ahead of time, is that it frees you from making last-minute decisions about what to eat and prevents you from caving in to sudden impulses to overeat. Planning your eating in advance eliminates any doubt about what you will eat and removes your fear of losing control. With a food plan in place for the day, you can and will regain greater control over your eating. So use this diary as a meal planner, above all.

Use the Food Diary to Monitor Your Eating Behavior

But you do not have to stop there. You can use this diary to record important information about your nutrition and eating habits. For example, you can record the time of your meals, the place, what you were doing at the time, or, in some cases, the emotional states (happy, sad, lonely, bored, stressed, angry, etc.) that may have triggered you to eat "off plan."

This information can help you see, in unquestionable black and white, precisely which eating habits you need to adjust or high-risk situations that are sabotaging your efforts. Maybe you find that you mindlessly reach for foods such as cookies, cake, candy, or ice cream -- the so-called comfort foods -- when you feel tired after a long day at work. Or that being in certain places, like your car or office, triggers the impulse
to eat.

Then you can thoughtfully review your entries, looking for red flags. Assess the obstacles that can have an impact on reaching your get-real weight. This means anticipating the times, places, circumstances -- even people -- that typically make it difficult for you to stay the course. That way, you can work out an advance strategy for avoiding these pitfalls, or at least outlasting them. You're in a better position to avoid them by changing your routine, changing your schedule, or changing your environment.

You can also plan very carefully what you are going to do at those moments when you have the urge to binge or overeat. This should involve "incompatible substitutes" -- activities such as exercising, relaxation, listening to music -- any activity that cannot coexist with eating. For example, when you feel compelled to soothe frustrations with a bag of chips, pick up your knitting needles instead and start knitting. Knitting is incompatible with crunching down on chips. Or take a walk. Walking around the block is incompatible with bingeing. Incompatible substitutes also take your mind off food and eating. So as soon as you feel the impulse, begin engaging, deliberately, in the incompatible substitute.

Keeping this food diary is crucial to the process of losing weight. It is a vital part of what psychologists call "self-monitoring," a way to keep tabs on your progress and performance -- not only to see where you need to take corrective action, but also to highlight the positive changes you're making. People who self-monitor their behavior are more successful at losing weight and keeping it off than those who choose to not self-monitor. So let me encourage you to self-monitor. What you do not acknowledge is only going to get worse until you do.

On the following page is a sample diary. You should make as many photocopies as you need of this page. You don't have to use the diary forever -- just long enough for you to see what's working and what's not -- and to get the hang of what you need to be correcting on a day-to-day basis so that you can take important and timely coping steps.

Remember, you can use this diary as a meal planner to map out your meals for the next day, and as a log to identify correctable aspects of your behavior that you need to change. To help you fill this out, here are some important instructions:

• In column 1 (time), record the time of day you plan to eat. If you do not know which time you'll be eating, write down "breakfast," "lunch," "dinner," and "snacks."

• In column 2 (food eaten), describe your meal or snack. Write down everything you plan to eat at those meals. If you eat something you have not planned to eat, write that down as soon as possible afterward. (Note the time in the first column, too.) Leave nothing out.

• In column 3 (amount), write down how much you ate (the amount or portion size).

• In column 4 (compliance), note whether your meal or snack complied with your planned menu. Place a check mark in the allotted space if it did.

• In column 5 (calories), write down the calories you consumed for each meal or snack. Add up your calories at the end of each day. (Remember, you do not have to do this forever -- just long enough to get a feel for how well you're doing. • In column 7 (circumstances), describe any noteworthy circumstances surrounding the meal or snack, such as your feelings or emotions, whether you felt tired or unusually hungry, or if the meal happened in response to a stressful event.

Using the nutritional strategies that follow, you will be able to reprogram yourself for success rather than failure. Rewards will start rolling in quicker than you think. Your weight control experience will no longer be characterized by wasted moments and frustration, but by a sense of triumph and mastery. It's time to go for it.

Hunger Suppressors

• Lean animal-based proteins such as fish, meat, and poultry

• Fresh fruits

• Fresh vegetables

• Beans and legumes (e.g., kidney beans, pinto beans, or black beans)

The 7 Keys to Weight Loss Freedom

Key 1 -- Right Thinking. Lay aside self-defeating, invalid mind-sets that do not work. They have the power to keep you from making different choices or developing new behaviors. Too often, we let these negative notions go unchallenged, and we act as though they were true. You must monitor what you're thinking and challenge whether it is true. If it's not working, replace it with thinking that works.

Key 2 -- Healing Feelings. Overcome emotional overeating by managing inappropriate reactions to stress; solving problems rather than dwelling on them; changing self-defeating thoughts, since more often than not, feelings follow thoughts; gaining closure on unfinished emotional business; and learning new ways to cope without resorting to food.

Key 3 -- A No-Fail Environment. Design your world so that you can't help but succeed. This involves removing temptations to eat and rearranging your schedule in order to avoid or minimize triggers to overeat.

Key 4 -- Mastery over Food and Impulse Eating. There's only one reason why you haven't changed the bad stuff in your life. You're getting something out of it. I'm not saying that you're getting something healthy or positive, but people do not continue in situations, attitudes, or actions that do not give them a payoff. This key helps you identify those payoffs, unplug from them, and replace bad habits with healthy behavior.

Key 5 -- High-Response Cost, High-Yield Nutrition. To lose weight, you must choose foods that support good behavioral control over your eating, that is, high-response cost, high-yield foods, organized into a moderate, balanced, calorie-controlled plan to ensure weight loss.

Key 6 -- Intentional Exercise. Prioritize regular exercise into your life most days of the week -- walking, jogging, aerobic dance classes, yoga, playing a sport, or lifting weights. Exercise does more than simply burn calories; it changes your self-perception so you stop labeling yourself as a couch potato.

Key 7 -- Your Circle of Support. Surround yourself with supportive, like-minded people who want you to lose weight and succeed at your health and fitness efforts.

He's right on!

EVERYONE says that you can lose weight just by eating this differently or try this pill or wear this lap band. Maybe if I exercise long enough I'll get thin! I've been jogging on and off for the past 10 years and my body has remained 15-50 lbs overweight (fluctuates depending on the year! ha!). When I read Dr. Phil, I kept nodding with him because he FINALLY got to the root of my problem!! There's a REASON why I eat the way I do and why exercise doesn't solve anything.

Dr. Phil gets to the bottom of the problem. If a person doesn't fix the root of the problem, he/she will continue to reap ROTTEN FRUIT. Dr. Phil helped me see the real problem in this book. Fix the root then you fix the fruit!

Of all the ways to lose weight, this is the answer... *THE* ANSWER because it not only will fix your body but it will address the problems one might have that CAUSE the fat body. If you don't ever figure out the problem deep inside the perpetuates the fat, then you'll just stay fat. Fat thinking/fat issues/pain covered up with fat/etc. = fat person. Fix the issues, fix the fat!!

Dr. Phil is dead on with this book and I recommend it to EVERY PERSON OUT THERE who struggles with weight. EVERY!!!!

A Good Listen... I've Lost The Weight!!

After finishing college, I wanted to lose the pounds that I had stored away while sitting on my butt studying all the time. I had heard a lot of praises for this book, so I went out and picked it up.
The thing I liked about this book is that it really gives you a mental edge over your diet. While reading this book, it caused me to reflect on my lifestyle and how a lot of the things I was doing was making me easily gain weight. It teaches you how to eat properly and encourages exercise while setting your life up in a fashion that will allow you to more easily tackle weight loss.
I not only liked the mental edge, I do like the fact that this diet was realistic enough to recommend and encourage exercise. Most diets claim that they can help you lose weight without any exercise but Dr. Phil actually is much more down to earth in the reality of that aspect.
The only part I disagreed with was the part dealing with WHAT to eat. I'm not a big fan of starchy (ie, surgary) foods and was surprised to find that a quarter of each meal was supposed to be high in starch. I did replace this with another diet (read my other reviews, you'll figure out which one).
Between the two, I have lost nearly everything that I wanted to loose and I did it with very little effort. I would highly recommend this book to anybody looking to lose weight.
This audio version is abridged and things are left out that you should read. If you like what you hear, make sure you pick up the book and read through that as well. However, listening to Dr. Phil preach and teach these 7 keys to you really helps with the motivation. His voice just makes you want to lose all the weight!!

After all, it is Dr. Phil

I have mixed feelings about this book when I purchased it. While I didn't expect it to be the ultimate solution for my weight loss, and I was confident it would not be riddled with elaborate recipes, it was a very diffcult read...not because it wasn't good, but because it required me to think and take responsibility for what I had/was doing to myself. Dr. Phil only has 2 types of followers: those that like him and those that don't. If you don't like him, you don't because what he says is the truth and (as Jack Nicholson says, "you can't handle the truth"). If you like him, you do because it puts the burden on you to take action and change. Someone or something has to get your attention, and that's Dr. Phil. If it needs to be said, he'll say it. If you don't want to hear it, he'll pull your fingers out of your ears and make you listen. If you don't want to change, then move on...because there are other people out here who will take your 5 minutes of time with him and treat it like gold. When it comes to this book, be open to what it says, read it more than once, find someone to discuss it with, and then make a commitment to yourself to either do it or not.

Friday morning. The Kilcaidie Advertiser Daily Horoscope. Sagittarius: Despite a bumpy start to the day, positive aspects will forge a new beginning mid-afternoon. Don't turn away from new ideas or challenges as your future happiness might just depend on them.

Dee placed her cup of tea and bacon sandwich down on her desk and switched on her PC. There was no putting it off any further. In the last hour she'd considered and dismissed every conceivable excuse to avoid sitting down and doing some work today. Excuse number one: raging hangover. Dismissed on the grounds that it was self-inflicted so therefore not a credible reason to avoid doing paid labour. Number two: a mountain of ironing so high that a Sherpa would get vertigo just looking at it. However, ten minutes searching for the iron had proved fruitless. It was probably underneath the pile. Desperation started to creep in. Number three: it was nearly a fortnight since she'd visited her mother. She could nip over for a couple of hours. After all, she was already feeling atrocious, how much worse could it be? She sighed in resignation, then gritted her teeth. Sod it. It would be less painful to sit down and put in a few hours' work. Her mother's dulcet tones on top of the hangover from hell would have her speed-dialling the Samaritans.

She blinked hard, trying to clear the fog. Which of her literary hats would perch most comfortably on her pounding head today? Did she feel like being Desdemona White, the True Romance Book Club's novelist of the month, esteemed author of such romantic classics as He Came, He Conquered and His Throbbing Heart? Not for the first time, she gave an involuntary shudder. How had she managed to assume the identity of someone whom her mostly aged, single readers imagined lounging on a chaise-longue, wearing an apricot kaftan and patting a shitzu while she wrote her love classics on parchment with an antique fountain pen? If they could only see her now...She'd be evicted from the House Of True Romance quicker than a bigamist with body odour.

A flashback seared through her trance-like state. It had all been Trudy's fault. But then, everything always was. It had been Trude's idea to write romantic slush to supplement their meagre grants at uni. It had been Trude's theory that creating personas in keeping with the True Romance Book Club's average reader would give their manuscripts a better chance of being accepted. Thus Dee became Desdemona White, a fifty-year-old spinster who passed her days in a picturesque cottage in a blustery Scottish village, tending to her four cats and her petunias as she awaited the arrival of her God of Love, who would one day, she was sure, come and conquer.

It was also Trude's fault that even now, ten years after leaving university at the age of twenty-two, Dee was still penning her fluffy pink prose for a paltry income, instead of being the hard-hitting investigative journalist that she had always aspired to be. Well, okay, so that wasn't Trude's fault at all, but in her present tender state it made her feel better to pretend it was. In more lucid moments she would admit that the truth of the matter was that she just hadn't wanted it enough. No matter how many times she'd planned the move to London or composed applications to the more respectable tabloids and the lofty broadsheets, she never quite made it to the train or put her CV in the post. Finally, in a moment of clarity on her twenty-fifth birthday, she'd grudgingly acknowledged what everyone around her had always known: she was staying in Kilcaidie. And what's more, she was happy about it.

Three train stops and thirty minutes on a good day from the centre of Glasgow, Kilcaidie was notable only for the fact that, defying a long Celtic association with the merits of alcohol, it was the only dry village left in the West of Scotland. Not a pub for fifteen miles. It was therefore completely understandable that Dee was in this fragmented condition today, she reasoned. After all, you had to make the most of a trip to Glasgow and that's exactly what she and Trude had done on yesterday's shopping-cum-eating-cum-drinking-cum-rousing-three-other-passengers-and-a-dog-into-a-sing-song-on-the-last-train-home excursion. At her age she really should have known better. But then that was the story of her life, she mused. Common sense had never been her strongest personality trait. If it were, then she wouldn't have a career pretending to be a post-menopausal spinster on heat, earning a salary that was barely above the poverty line (not including, of course, a heady ?100 bonus for being voted Author of the Month in September 1998), which she had to supplement by being Auntie Diana, author of the Kilcaidie Advertiser's agony column, and the in-house astrologer, Madame Donatella, predictor of the population's daily fortunes. Multiple personality disorder was more a career choice than a mental condition.

Indecision furrowed her brow. Auntie Diana it was. It was a warming thought that reading about other people's trials and tribulations would undoubtedly make her feel better about her present sorry condition.

Bacon sandwich in one hand, she manoeuvred the mouse to the Outlook Express icon and clicked. It pinged as it opened the program. Ouch! Good God, when did that ping get so loud? It was vibrating round her head so violently that her eyelashes started to tremble.

She quickly slid the mouse to the volume control and reduced it to mute, before switching to the "Advertiser -- Auntie Diana" profile and clicking send/receive. The screen flashed up its progress. Dialling. Verifying password. Checking mailbox. You have twelve new messages. Dee groaned. Kilcaidie was a troubled place this week. Normally there weren't more than three or four letters in a week and they generally consisted of a lonely heart, a couple of neighbourly disputes and a complaint from George the hypochondriac about skateboarders on the high street inducing his panic attacks.

She automatically clicked on the most recent arrival.

Dear Auntie Diana,

I'm very concerned about my best friend. I think she has a serious drinking problem -- every time she indulges in alcohol she has an irresistible urge to sing Beach Boys songs really loudly on public transport. Is there a support group for this condition? Please advise as to the best course of action.

An amused snort escaped as Dee started typing.

Dear Trudy,

Pretend she's a horse with a broken limb and put her out of her misery -- with the severity of her current headache she'll thank you for it. And thank you for your concern.

Auntie Di

Two minutes later the phone rang. Ouch. Dee snatched it from the table. The caller spoke before she did.

"Sorry, mate, I haven't got a gun. How's your head?"

"Don't ask. And stop bloody sending e-mails to Auntie Di -- she's overworked as it is. How are you feeling this morning?"

"Like I've spent two weeks marinating my head in gin." Pause. "But enough fantasizing. I've got a proposition for you."

Dee groaned out loud. "Whatever it is, you can forget it. I'm not going to start yoga classes at the community centre, donate my eggs or do a sponsored slim in aid of Save the Whale. No matter how ironic that is."

"Nope, it's none of those. Although, and I'm telling you this strictly in the spirit of a best friend who only wants what's best for you -- your thighs could definitely benefit from a session or six of Ashtanga. Anyway, the proposition. How would you like to join Dave and me tomorrow night for a veritable feast of dishes from around the world as featured in the new Jamie Oliver bible of home cooking?"

"What's the catch?"

"Why does there have to be a catch? Can't I just invite my best friend for dinner without there being some dark, ulterior motive? I'm so offended."

"It's a proposition, Trudy, therefore there's a catch. Who is he this time?"

"Okay." Trudy sighed in a tone pitched somewhere between resignation and defeat. "It's Dave's new boss. He's just moved up here from London, so we thought we'd do the hospitality bit and invite him over. Can't beat a bit of grovelling to authority in the name of career advancement."

Dee put her head in her hands. Or at least she tried to, but her aim was off and she succeeded only in imprinting her keyboard on her forehead. This was the last thing she felt like doing this weekend. Dave, Trudy's fiancé of four years (he didn't like to rush things), worked in some obscure department of Glasgow City Council. He had told her about his job a couple of times but Dee's tendency to zone out after the first two minutes meant that she was none the wiser. Another internal groan. Dinner with the remnants of a hangover (this was definitely a three-day headache) and two civil servants, one of them trying to impress the other -- was this some cosmic punishment for over-indulgence last night?

Trude sensed her hesitation and resorted to blatant pleading. "Come on, Dee, if you do this, I'll never mention your cellulite again. Please."

"Okay, okay. But I'm warning you, this had better not be a set-up. The first whiff of a blind date and I'm out of there, Trude."

"It's not a set-up, I promise. It's just a fine example of good old Scottish hospitality."

Somehow, Dee doubted that.

Saturday morning. The Kilcaidie Advertiser Daily Horoscope. Sagittarius: Today is a day for rest and recuperation and taking quiet time to recharge your batteries. For those Sagittarians who do have to venture out, avoid new social interactions arranged by friends -- despite their well-meant intentions, they don't always know what is best for you.

Interestingly talented female writers abound.

Seems as if Scotland has it in the water or air or something (maybe the weather keeps them inside and imagining) that breeds really good writers. This is a excellent selection of many genres; mysteries, romances, magical fiction, modern lives, etc. And there are notes about the authors and references to some of their other works to whet the appetite. I am not especially fond of reading collections on e-readers however. I'd rather peruse and savor a real book.

So sad to see it end...

Well, I don't know what to think about the first review where she kept asking for an ending. Makes me wonder if we read the same book. This collection was nothing short of fabulous. Only a couple didn't have the traditional "closure" to it that this particular reviewer must have been wanting.
There are some real gems in this book. Lovely, lovely stories.
The Standouts:
In the Garden of Mrs. Pink by Isla Dewar. Charming story of a young girl and her "working" neighbor.
A True Romance by Shari Low. A woman gets what she thinks she wants only to realize that wasn't it at all.
The Six Stone Pack by Sara Sheridan. A weight loss competition between best friends.
A Choc Ice Down the Shore by Morag Joss. Beautiful story of a dying mother and her daughter and the examining of their relationship.
But the best was saved for last...Bonny in Scotland by Katie Agnew. I'm not going to say anything about this one..read it and you'll see why.

Of course it's not really fair to pick favorites here. It almost seemed that each one was better than the last. And the wonderful thing about them is the universal themes presented throughout. No matter these are Scottish women authors. They could be from anywhere..writing about all the feelings and issues women anywhere experience.
It's a glorious collection...now go enjoy it.

I bought this book after having read and enjoyed some of its Irish inspirations - Ladies Night at Finbar's Hotel, Irish Girls About Town, etc.

I'm sorry to report that these short stories from Scottish female authors are not nearly as engaging or as lively. There were a few gems - "In the Garden of Mrs. Pink" tells of a young girl's encounter with a lady of disrepute through charmingly innocent eyes. "School-Gate Mums," about a single mom/hitwoman, was so cynical and over-the-top that, despite the exciting story line, it just depressed me. But most of the stories were basically un-memorable. Overall, disappointing.

Excellent companion to the film.

I love the film "Underworld" and bought this book hoping to get more background information on the characters. The film warrants a sequel (and filming on "Underworld 2" starts Fall 2004) and even after several viewings of the dvd I always found new facts and tidbits that I hadn't caught before.
This is where the book comes in handy. Greg Cox does a fantastic job not only of bringing the film to life with his vivid descriptions, but he also does a great job of telling you what the characters are thinking and feeling. There is also more background info on the characters and the vampire and lycan culture that is not obvious or even mentioned in the film. For instance, I didn't realize that the vampire culture has a certain hierarchy and that the character Erika is considered a mere servant. Kraven and Lucian's plans are also explained here while only alluded to in the film. Many of my questions were answered in this book and this is why I find this an indispensable companion to the movie/dvd.
If you are an "Underworld" fan, then this book is a must have. It is a quick and enjoyable read that will give you new insight on the characters and cultures of the movie.

Hauntingly Alluring

The plot captivates you from the first page. Taking two of horrors most legendary creatures and pitting them against each other, Underworld grabs an old idea and adds an element fans have been wondering for years. Who would win in a fight, Dracula or the Wolfman? What would be the repercussions if the strengths of both villains were combined into one individual? Another fear of mine was that there would be more action than story. Not so. Although the action is constant throughout the book, there is significantly more dialogue. Which would be a plus in any book, but in an adaptation it's a gold star. What I will say though is that for a complete overall enjoyment, read the book and watch the movie. Keep the balance and share the love.

The pace in the book is hypersonic. You are constantly moving and shifting with just a brief pause in between. The atmosphere is dark, dank and heated. The location constantly shifts between a centuries old castle and an underground hideout. Both carry an air of desperation and the smell of decay. Cox's style of writing is both generous and sympathetic. He pens his tales with compassion, as though this battle existed inside him. Be it the screenplay or his own identity shining through, the man creates a world that is hauntingly alluring.

The characters come off as cold, vengeful monsters. With loyalty the only tie that binds them, each one screams villain. That is the biggest twist in the book. Granted, they have barely any morals, kill daily and regret very little and yet, they still manage to extract sympathy. Even gaining love and understanding. Also just for the record, the book clearly explains the development of the attraction between Selene and Michael.

I have read a few movie tie-ins before, but none compares to this. If you enjoyed the movie, definitely buy this book. It will fill in a few blanks for you. I especially liked how the author actually emphasized the Hungarian setting.

"The Sundering" is the final installment in the War of the Ancients trilogy, a series set in the universe of World of Warcraft. The night elves and other races of Azeroth are perched on the edge of losing their lives and their world to the Burning Legion...

Knaak created a truly epic story in this trilogy, taking the story and universe of Blizzard's award winning game series and creating memorable characters, an intriguing plot, and fantastic battles. He had to play in a world where many readers will already know most of the storyline, but didn't let that stop him from delivering a very enjoyable series. "The Sundering" has to wrap up all the loose ends of the previous two books, and it does that in a very nice manner. I read most of this book in 2 sittings, as I was eager to know how everything would finish up. And normally I'm not a real fan of too many battle scenes, but the final battle in "The Sundering" is very enjoyable; Knaak has a knack for writing good battles. I would say it isn't a fight that should be missed.

As I've said about the other books in the trilogy, "The Sundering" is full of lore that will make any Warcraft fan happy. I loved knowing what happened to Illidan...how he went evil. How Malfurion became the first of the druids. Why Mount Hyjal is an important part of the landscape. Little things will likely click into place in your mind as you read the book; I know I have some new questions and theories about why things are the way they are in the Warcraft universe.

The War of the Ancients is a trilogy I'm apt to read when I'm a little sick of playing World of Warcraft, and it almost always generates interest in playing again.

Doesn't do the lore justice

Based on the other reviews, I am in the minority on this but I found this whole trilogy a massive disappointment. I can only assume that others liked these books because they were so entranced by the lore, that they overlooked the many deficiencies. I've read a lot of fantasy novels, some good, some bad, and this was among the very worst. The only reason I slogged through this tedious, poorly written trilogy was to get at the lore, most of which is merely hinted at in the game.

Knaack is either a poor writer, or simply wrote this as a work-for-hire and gave it only the minimum attention required to get his pay check. The quest text and cutscenes in World of Warcraft are better scripted and edited than this novel. His syntax is frequently atrocious. One jarring example came early in the first book, when he describes a dragon aspect as "humongous". This word is pure 1960s slang, on a par with "ginormous", and is a poor choice to describe the majesty and scale of the Titans' hand picked guardians of Azeroth.

His characterization is paper thin. Only Broxigar stood out as having any depth, a warrior suffering survior's guilt and feelings that he is not worthy of the accolades bestowed on him by Warchief Thrall and others. Shandris Feathermoon was intriguing but never really got enough time on the page to develop. Azshara, queen of the night elves, is vapid, self absorbed and easily duped. Malfurion and Tyrande, while likable enough, are mostly characterized by the fact that their intentions are always good, and they always do the right thing. They are heroes, yes, but they're never really conflicted or complex enough to be very interesting. Sargeras, as a rogue Titan, could have been interesting, but his history, motivations and character were barely touched on; the WoWWiki article does a better job of conveying the character, a dutiful champion of the Titans, who after millennia despairs of his task and slips into madness. In the book, he is a one dimensional anarchist intent merely upon destroying all life.

His plotting is mediocre and meandering, consisting of the heroes running between various points in Kalimdor, never quite accomplishing what they set out to do, and returning in time to prevent the succession of battles from turning into complete defeat. In this he gets a partial dispensation in that he is constrained not to step too far from the boundaries of known WoW lore. This fault taken by itself would not damn the whole. But taken with his other deficiencies, however, this was simply the final nail in the coffin.

Some may argue my expectations for a novel based on video characters is too high, but I'd counter that the depth of the narrative and characterization of WoW is a huge part of its success. A novel offers so many options for extending the depth and breadth of what is often only hinted at in the game, that it ought to do a better job than the video game. Knaack had three novels to work with, but failed to improve in any way upon what came before.

Awesome book

Fantastic story, opens your eyes to more lore then World of Warcraft provides and shows how everything came to be. The whole series is incredible and Knaak was the perfect writer for it. This book is more of a wrap up story then the other 2, culminating with the sundering of the land of Azeroth, but as the Warcraft lore has been created before these books were written there is only so much that can be said or done. It is similar to Star Wars in that vain: you know what is going to happen next so you cant fiddle too much with the past. If you are a fan of Warcraft or just enjoy well written Fantasy novels this is light years better then anything D&D authors have channeled out recently. A must buy.

But the prose is often vigorous, the characters are well-drawn, the settings are vividly evoked, and the plot contains more angles than a geometry test--capped by an ingenious solution to the central mystery. Eighty-five-year-old Spillane (I, the Jury; Erection Set; Tomorrow I Die) shows little evidence of advanced age in this entertaining island adventure featuring ex-spook Mako Hooker and his Carib fishing partner, Billy Bright. Mako, retired on remote Peolle Island, devotes himself to drinking Miller Lite, fishing and boating, but he soon learns what aficionados of spy fiction already know well: you never really retire from the Company. Trouble arises on several fronts: a malevolent leviathan of unknown species begins slashing huge chunks out of the bottoms of fishing boats, and still-functioning WWII-era mines from sunken ships appear on the surface of the ocean, prompting the U.S. government to send in a team of agents and re-activate Hooker. Also in on the fun is ex-mobster Tony Pallatzo, now known as Anthony Pell, the head of a movie unit determined to capture the sea-dwelling monster on film, and lovely agent Chana, an old enemy against whom Hooker still holds a grudge: "for a second he wished he had been packing his .45 and the piece was in his hand with the hammer back so he could turn and shoot her guts right out of her beautiful belly and it would finally be all over with for all time." In Spillane's world, men still call women kiddo and baby and refer to each other as pals and buddies. True to his tough-guy heritage, Mako slays the dragon, finds himself a beautiful dame in the process and receives his just reward: "Muscles in her stomach rippled against his hands, saying quiet things that he could hardly believe." Maybe it's me?

I'm not sure that this is a novel for diehard fans, since it lacks the clear, lean narrative that usually characterizes this master's works. There are too many characters, too many vague plot lines, too much texture, too much technical detail. There is not enough grit, not enough action, not enough memorable one-liners.
In short, it's not your usual Mickey Spillane book. Here, he's doing things that others do much better rather than doing the things that no one can do like him. For a weathered, government operative with old values and old expressions, go for a Donald Hamilton, who can also do boats and action at sea.
Maybe it's just me. This is a guy who always deserves the benefit of the doubt. Keep writing, Mickey.

Big Fish Story from Big Hardboiled Fish Spillane

So Mickey Spillane wants to shoulder Mike Hammer's favorite pistol for a book and bring us a big fish story (of sorts). Fine. SOMETHING'S DOWN THERE isn't exactly the page-turner we're used to when it comes to the hardboiled thrillers Spillane is so clever at concocting, but it's not a dud, either. Not by a stretch. In fact, I'd say there were intimations of this novel - its pacing, its location, its more sedate and world-weary hero - in the last Hammer novel, BLACK ALLEY. Consider Mako Hooker a distant (and I mean distant, but nevertheless related) cousin to the Mike Hammer we encountered at the beginning and end of BLACK ALLEY: tired, nursing recent wounds and (by the end of the book) fresh ones. Hooker is the 21st century remnant of the gritty tough guy that served as central character in Spillane's earlier work. That said, I certainly hope we see Spillane resurrect the more visceral tough-as-steel Mike Hammer in the forthcoming novel (Summer 2004).
As for the plot and pacing of SOMETHING'S DOWN THERE, there's a stab at local color here that's a far cry from the dark, cold and rainy New York City that provides the backdrop of the Mike Hammer stories. This time Spillane paints a quiet seagoing life off a small island in the Caribbean. The general laid-back environment and day-to-day routines are disrupted when something starts sinking fishing ships - enough of them to pique the interest of the Company. But Company-agent Mako Hooker is no Tiger Mann (remember him?) and the twists and turns this leisurely paced book takes are not the twists and turns of Spillane's best mysteries.
If you're a Spillane fan, though, SOMETHING'S DOWN THERE is a must-read. There are enough echoes of the hardboiled Spillane here to make you nod your head nostalgically and agitate your anticipation for the forthcoming new Hammer novel.

Interesting but flawed story

Aging cold warrior Mako Hooker has retired to the islands where he fishes and doesn't do much else. But rumors of a boat killer are starting to mount and the Company,' anxious to pick up political favors, sends a team into the area to find out whether the long extinct mega-shark has emerged. Because Mako has seen the six-inch broad bite marks that the killer has left. Along with the Company team, a cruise ship filled with millionaires and a Hollywood filming team are in the area.
Mako's friend and boat captain pushes Maco into a relationship with be beautiful millionaire Judy (a.k.a. 'Doll'). That is the good news. The bad news is that the woman on the Company team is gunning for a chance to kill Maco and one of the Hollywood men is a Mafiosa. The Mafiosa may be playing legitimate now, but Mako knows that it's only a matter of time before he decides to go for illegal profits. A number of suspicious deaths in his past make Mako even more suspicious.
Author Mickey Spillane has been writing hard-boiled action for more than half a century and he can still turn out captivating action. Still, SOMETHING'S DOWN THERE didn't seem quite put together. I wasn't clear why the Mafiosa had to be there and what illegal objective he was seeking that even a legitimate Hollywood manager (if there is such a thing) wouldn't be doing. The boat-killer is an intriguing concept but was perhaps too easy to guess and its final resolution seemed unsatisfactory to me. And the relationship between Mako and Judy seemed just a little too sexist for me to buy into. Finally, Spillane's characters occasionally date themselves, talking about World War II as if it was a recent event and as if veterans of that war were still active in espionage.
SOMETHING'S DOWN THERE is flawed, but it is still interesting and occasionally compelling. Spillane maintains a way with words even in a story that is not his best.
