Not Bad at All for Such a Small Price!

Normally, I would read DVD reviews found in the internet (as they are up-dated on a regular basis) as I collect both NTSC & PAL versions. However, I did pick up this book out of curiosity (probably due to the low price). Can't say that it's really outstanding but it is useful to some extend. The obvious advantage is its small size, thus you could bring it anyway & read it during your leisure.
For those serious DVD collectors, then this is a must buy. For me now, not only I'm colleting DVD movies but also any interesting DVD books!

This is a really good book, and I do recommend it. This, and the Video Hound's Guide to DVDs series are the only ones I've found that describe and rate both the movie and the DVD, as most movie review books really only give capsule reviews of the movie and ignore the DVD extras. This book has in-depth reviews of 134 good movies and their DVD editions, whereas the Video Hound guides try to give a capsule review on a much larger set of DVDs. I think the reviews in this book are very good, and the information about DVD extras are even better.
However, there's one thing that I really didn't like about this book: It doesn't list any identifying information about the DVD, like the studio catalog number and / or UPC number. A number of the titles reviewed in this book have had several releases, and even though the review will mention which version to buy (at least by which studio released it), it's not always easy to pick it out of the review. They really should, at the very least, clearly list the catalog and UPC number of the versions they are reviewing at the beginning of the review (with recommended version if there is one), and ideally also use this information when they are comparing features of different releases of a title.

Crowd roaring clapping for these critics

I've been a film junkie all my life. And every year I avidly read every review and buy every book (of reviews) that I can lay my hands on. I consider myself such a serious fan of film that I read so many reviews I end up being a critic of critics. Vincent Canby and Janet Maslin (both from The New York Times) always won the award for the two people I could totally trust. I must now double that list and add Alida Brill and Steven Scheuer to that small circle of respected critical resources. This pocket guide puts an end to the silly idea of a collection of quickly created paragraph reviews (like just about every other dvd book) and instead focuses serious attention and commentary on about 180 must see movies. And it explains, quite thoroughly, why you will need to add quite a few titles to your collection. In their review of the classis "Do The Right Thing" they start by telling the truth: "this film grabs you by the first frame." And to that I must add THIS book (The Pocket Guide) grabs you on the first page. If you are a fan of film, buy a front row seat to this book and sign up for one-click shopping on Amazon and other sites... because your DVD collection is about to grow much bigger... and smartly so.

Afeni Shakur (nee Alice Faye), the mother of deceased hip-hop star Tupac Shakur, emerges as a significant cultural emblem in her own right in this absorbing oral history. Daughter of a violent broken home, Shakur's rage at her inner demons and at white racism impelled her into a leadership position with the Black Panthers, where she navigated the treacherous currents of revolutionary and sexual politics in the Black Power movement. After government and internal dissension brought down the Panthers ("the party was ripping itself apart," she says), she followed a downward spiral of bad relationships, crack addiction and familial breakup, ending with 12-step redemption and a final come-back at the helm of Tupac's posthumous entertainment empire. The book is somewhat marred by the obtrusive presence of interlocutor and amanuensis Guy, an actress and friend-of-Tupac who optioned the rights to Afreni's story and too often mentions its possibilities as an uplifting biopic. At times, she is clumsy about eliciting a coherent narrative from Shakur, dilutes Shakur's often lacerating self-reproaches with Oprah-esque talk of self-esteem issues, and clutters the story with too much banter and bonding between her and her subject. Still, Shakur's distinctive voice comes through loud and clear, by turns truculent, ruminative and elegiac, and painfully aware of her many failures to live up to her own flinty moralism. The result is a complex portrait of a woman in whom the political and the personal collided with unusual force.

Meanwhile, the demon Chernobog, who is possessing the grand duke of Lithuania, has allied with the witch-king Emeric of Hungary and the Byzantine Empire to descend on Corfu, a notable site of ancient magic. The ensuing siege of Corfu takes up two-thirds of the book, and it is almost impossible to put it down while the tension remains high. Benito redeems himself, material and magical treachery nearly overthrows the islanders' resistance, characters who have become real to readers suffer and die (some of them richly deserving it), and Lackey and associates' areas of expertise, including naval history and classical mythology, are smoothly blended. Why this is NOT a big fat fantasy...why you should read it!

First, it really doesn't read like the sequel it is...it can be read standalone quite well. Second, it reads like a terrifically well realized alternate history, rather than another of the ubiquitous elves-dwarves-and-orcs fantasies we are inundated with. Third, it actually has some closure at the end, so it isn't like certain other fantasy series which are apparently never going to go anywhere, and never end either.
Mercedes Lackey, Eric Flint, and Dave Freer are a perfectly matched writing trio...and a tripod is the strongest seat. They seamlessly craft this rich, colorful, and highly complex story, filled with historical in-jokes (Eneko Lopez and his friends are the original seven members of the Jesuit order) and even a few Baen Barfly in-jokes ("It was enough to give Erik the mutters.")
Even the little, passing-through characters are very vividly realized, and are real people, not spearcarriers. Spiro, the Corfiote fisherman, for example, and his buddy, Taki the fisher captain, are human beings caught in the flash of the story's eye.
I'm halfway through my third read of this book, and it is holding my attention so well that I have been sneaking off to read another couple of pages all day long.
This is what alternate worlds fantasy should be. Kim Stanley Robinson, Harry Turtledove, and other practitioners, please take note. This is the reigning champion of the field.

This Rough Magic is fantastic

Lackey, Flint and Freer continue the fantastic weaving of characters that they started in Shadow of the Lion. The authors bring back most of our favourite characters, add in very interesting new characters, weave a plot that is gripping from beginning to end, have evil characters that are really evil and the authors make you cry yet leave you wanting the next book the minute you finish.
I cannot say it enough. Buy this book. You will find yourself reading it again and again just to enjoy the rich tapestry that Lackey, Flint and Freer have created.
This Rough Magic is an alternate-history where the great library in Alexandria was not destroyed. History as we know it branched from there. Magic and Christianity exist together, with black magic a very real danger to both body and soul.
Incorporating, mixing and mashing well known myths the story grips you to the very end. You find yourself still reading it at 3 am in the morning with a 7 am start knowing you just have to finish the book - who needs to sleep - you can snooze at work.
The main setting is the Island of Corfu where the Mother Goddess still rules and affects the magics of both good and evil. There are demons, nonhumans (both good and bad), good friends and family, all of whom become very real.
We see how much friends care about each, the enormous affect love has on people and what they will go through for their loved ones. We watch Benito Valdosta grow from a young lout of a noble to a mature young man, shouldering responsibilites that he would have avoided before. We see Maria grow from an kernal into a mighty tree (read the book - you'll see what I mean). Eric has to choose between love and duty, then has Manfred save him that horrible choice out of his friendship for Eric. Lackey, Flint and Freer write a scene where you believe you can see what's happening, then hit you with a ninety degree turn that you just didn't see coming.
We watch as King Emeric shows what a monster he is however he pales beside both his great aunt, Elizabeth Batholdy and Jagellion/Chernobog as they continue to work their great evil.
There are fascinating minor characters scattered and interwoven throughout the book and you find yourself looking for them again and again.
As you read, the characters become real people. Buy it, you'll enjoy it.

Outstanding adventure romp

"This Rough Magic" is an excellent sequel to "Shadow of the Lion;" it is a seamless collaboration between three fine authors, Dave Freer, Eric Flint and Mercedes Lackey, and uses their best points of great characterization and fast-moving plotlines to good advantage.
The best thing about "This Rough Magic" is that there's no lost time; instead, it picks up where "Shadow" left off. Benito Valdosta (the mischievous brother in "Shadow"), who keeps finding new ways to get himself in trouble, was jilted by his love, Maria, who married another at the end of the last book. Consequently, the first thing he does in this book is engage in some rather public coitus to try to forget her (or at least have a good time in the process) and manages to get banished from Venice, unfortunately being sent to where Maria and her new husband have landed -- the island of Corfu.
There, the cruel Emeric of Hungary (egged on by his great-great-aunt, Elizabeth Bartholdy, who's even worse than Emeric) has plans to take over the island; he wants to take over Corfu as a military staging point, and expends many men and much effort into that purpose. And he nearly succeeds in doing so.
But Corfu itself resists him; the island is magical, and that slows Emeric's advance down long enough for word to be sent to Venice. Benito, of course, is the only messenger who has the street smarts and the upper class credentials to be believed, so despite his banishment, he goes anyway.
And after Benito returns, the sparks really start to fly, because y'see, Emeric didn't reckon on Benito, Maria and their friends . . . .
How Benito, Maria and the others thwart Emeric, along the way figuring out the mystery of Corfu and finding a way for Benito and Maria to reunite, is way too much fun for me to spoil.
Just go buy the book already, will you?

The Best Book I've Read This Year So Far

Until BAD MEN I had not read a John Connelly book since EVERY DEAD THING, his debut novel. I have no excuse; I liked EVERY DEAD THING and was apparently in good company, since it won the prestigious Shamus Award. But I somehow missed the others, all featuring driven and disturbed private investigator Charlie Parker: DARK HOLLOW, THE KILLING KIND and THE WHITE ROAD. I accordingly was sandbagged when I picked up BAD MEN. Somewhere along the way, Connelly went from a writer with an impressive debut to one of our best in the space of just a few novels.
BAD MEN is not a Parker novel. No matter; if you're a fan of Parker you won't be disappointed at his absence, for BAD MEN reads like a collaboration between Dennis Lehane and Stephen King, with Garth Ennis throwing in an occasional farthing. Parker does make two brief appearances that very tangentially tie in to the haunting incidents of BAD MEN, but the protagonist of this brilliant work is Sanctuary, also known as Dutch Island, a dot on the map off the coast of Maine. Sanctuary has a unique history, one that Connelly introduces early on here. The original settlers of Sanctuary were betrayed and slaughtered by enemies led by one of their own. The island took its own revenge, and in the intervening 300 years, things have been quiet, with its inhabitants being a somewhat quirky and, for the most part, harmless assortment of characters.
The island, however, is awakening. Joe Dupree is Dutch Island's policeman; nicknamed Melancholy Joe, he stands over seven feet tall and bears his status as a freak with a quiet grace that has earned him the respect of the island people. But Dupree knows the secrets of the island and can sense its awakening in response to the coming of evil. The evil is coming in the form of Ed Moloch, an escaped convict who has assembled a disparate and degenerate crew of personalities for the purpose of bringing down a long simmering and terrifying revenge upon the person responsible for his incarceration. Moloch does not know it, at least not initially, but he is on a collision course with Dutch Island, a place that has been calling to him in his dreams and that he knows intimately, though he has never been there.
BAD MEN is written in the omnipresent third person, a literary device that permits Connelly to reveal the thoughts of each of his characters. As a result, the reader is made aware of the nightmarish workings of Moloch's mind, which are not only driven but also infused with pure evil. Willard, one of Moloch's crew, is even more terrifying than Moloch himself. A quiet, almost angelic looking youth, Willard possesses a cruelty and yearning for mayhem made all the more frightening by the casual manner in which he wields it. The element of Willard's persona that is the most terrifying, however, is his relatively ordinary appearance. He's the type of person you might encounter without giving a second glance, believing him, at worst, to be a little odd, perhaps a bit mentally slow, without noting the feral intelligence underneath. Connelly exhibits one of his many literary strengths here, drawing the reader into Willard and Moloch's circle of terror by showing rather than telling the reader where things are going with these two. All that stands in their way is Dupree, a rookie cop and, of course, Sanctuary.
Connelly's narrative here is seamless. BAD MEN is not a stream of consciousness tale, yet it reads as if he sat down and wrote it in the midst of a 72-hour fever dream. You will never forget Connelly, BAD MEN or Moloch. And watch out for Willard. God help us all, he's out there too.

"Now, something was awake."

John Connolly delivers an impressive thriller, which I found almost impossible to put down after jumping into its exquisitely elaborated plot. He switches back and forth between the past and the present with ease, demonstrating his skills. Dutch Island is situated at a one and a half hour ferry ride from Portland, and it has been the setting of mysterious and unsettling events throughout its history. This is the setting for the marvelous story presented by Connolly.
In the late seventeenth century Indians consistently raided the various islands in the area outside of what is known today as Portland, pushing the white settlers away. But in 1691 thirty individuals arrived to Dutch Island, which at the time was also known as Sanctuary, and decided to give it a try. Bauer, one of the men that formed part of the group, was justly accused of attempting to rape another man's wife. When he asked his own wife for shelter against his pursuers she did not comply and he was captured. However, he was able to escape and he returned years later with renegade Indians as his "hired help" bringing mayhem to the village. After the horrible events that developed in the island, the ghosts of the dead were left behind to cohabitate with the living. Usually, they do not interact much with humans, but now something is growing, and some people in the island can feel it.
Connolly creates interesting and well-developed characters, like the giant Joe Dupree, seven feet two inches and three hundred and sixty pounds, who is in charge of the police department in Dutch Island. He is courting Marianne, a woman who has some secrets in store, but he also has some secrets of his own. Moloch is sitting in jail awaiting his forced appearance before the Grand Jury, and knowing that when that happens he will be facing charges that deserve the capital punishment. When he sleeps, he has disturbing dreams, in which he leads a gang of renegade Indians into an island in search for his wife who had betrayed him. Finally, there are a couple of other characters that add flavor to the mix: Jack, a painter with little talent, but whose paintings evolve after he is done with them, and Richie, a twenty-five-year-old "kid" who has the ability to see unnatural events unfold.
It is reinvigorating to find authors that besides creating exciting stories that keep you reading all night, possess the gift of writing. This is the case of John Connolly, who not only leads us towards the end of the story with a fast-paced plot full of suspense, but who also knows how to make us enjoy the ride to get there.

Edward Moloch and his bed men are coming to Sanctuary

I suppose it is impossible to see similarities between John Connolly's "Bad Men" and the novels of Stephen King, not just because the main setting for this horror novel is an island in Maine, but more because the title characters really are bad men and they are joined in the festivities by some supernatural counterparts. But even with King's penchant for engaging in gross out gore, Connolly takes it to a level more akin to true crime books.
The novel's heroine, Marianne Elliott, was married to a psycho-killer named Edward Moloch that she betrayed to the police. He is in prison back in Virginia and even though they have thrown away the key Marianne has taken a new name, changed her look, and found herself on a remote Maine island called Sanctuary. However, it seems that way back in 1693 the island was overrun by a gang of "bad men" who raped and pillaged before they slaughtered the entire community. There is a feeling in Sanctuary, articulated by "Melancholy" Joe Dupree, the 7-foot-2-inch gentle giant who is the island's only police officer, that the massacre tainted the land. This seems a reasonable interpretation of events since any one who ends up wandering around in the forest near where the bones of the settlers are buried tend to meet mysterious deaths. Now giant gray moths are appearing all over the island and the ghostly figure of a little girl has been seen. All the signs suggest that something wicked will be coming this way.
Of course, that terms out to be Moloch. All these years in prison he has been spending his days obsessing about finding and butchering Marianne, but at night he is having dreams of the massacre on Sanctuary during colonial times. It also turns out that he has a fan club and in due course Moloch has his own gang of "bad men" that are moving north on a bloody killing spree taking heads and visiting other indecencies on their victims. The climax takes place on the requisite dark and stormy night on Sanctuary, where Marianne turns out to have some allies in welcoming her husband to her new home.
Ultimately the comparison that comes to mind by the time you finish this blood-drenched book is not Stephen King or Thomas Harris but Laurell K. Hamilton. Like Hamilton, Connoly's book will probably never be filmed because to do it right would be to mandate at least an NC-17 rating. If you can stomach the blood and gore, then you will fine "Bad Men" a good late-night read. The pace is brisk and each of the characters is made memorable, although some of them in a way you might prefer not to remember. I have not read any of Connolly's other novels featuring the Portland-based private eye Charlie Parker, which makes sense to me because if they were anything like this one I surely would have heard about him and his work because when you have somebody who can carry off this sort of a bloodbath word gets around.

The book begins with a riveting account of John Jr.'s fatal 1999 plane crash, what Heymann characterizes as an accident waiting to happen: "He knew just enough about piloting to be considered dangerous," especially in collusion with factors like "alcohol, pharmaceuticals, a broken ankle... to say nothing of youth, folly, and overconfidence." Naturally, Jackie Onassis plays a big role, especially in John-John's early years; Heymann illustrates to heart-breaking effect what a devoted mother she was, shielding her children from media overexposure and the siren call of celebrity to the best of her ability while also dealing with a husband who was famously unfaithful and publicly murdered. A typical Kennedy life story, haunted by fame and tragedy, this volume won't surprise anyone who's well-read on the subject, but it's a fine, emotional summer read for anyone who daydreams of American royalty.

The first dual biography of JFK's children is a far cry from the glitzy, superficial star bios that litter bookstore shelves. The book, which traces the lives of John and Caroline Kennedy, begins with a detailed account of the 1999 death of John Jr., and Heymann pulls no punches: the airplane crash, he demonstrates (citing government documents, among other sources), was caused by the inability of an inexperienced pilot to handle weather conditions under which he had no business flying. The rest of the book is like that: hard-hitting, straightforward, and—when the situation calls for it—uncomplimentary. Heymann touches on some well-worn Kennedy themes: JFK's womanizing, Jackie's demanding nature, the whole Kennedys-as-American-royalty thing. But by focusing on the children, he gives us a new perspective on the family. We see the president and his wife through the eyes of their offspring, and, after their father's death, we see what growing up Kennedy means to a young girl and boy who are desperately trying to be regular kids in an environment that absolutely doesn't permit such a thing. The book appears to be well researched (although some readers might quibble with using such low-end biographers as J. Randy Taraborrelli and Kitty Kelley as sources), and there's no denying that Heymann knows how to make a biography read like an epic novel. A must for committed Kennedy watchers. Pitt, David

A bit of a disappointment

I have to respectfully disagree with the reviewer who urges those who have previously read about the Kennedys to purchase this book. I have read several Kennedy biographies, and I'm not sure this was a worthwhile purchase. For me most of this book was a rehash of earlier material. In fact, much of it is a retread of Heymann's previous book, "A Woman Named Jackie".

The book attempts to grab readers by promising an explosive revelation from the autopsy report of John Jr., which turns out to be a suggestion that John may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time he crashed his plane. Yet Heymann admits that the toxicology reports do not indicate whether the alcohol found in his system was the result of premortem or postmortem events. And although one man who encountered John at a convenience store near the airport noticed a bottle of wine under his arm, Heymann offers no witnesses who actually observed Kennedy consuming alcohol. So in my opinion that allegation falls a bit flat.

As for Caroline, she apparently has a very protective and discreet circle of friends, and I have yet to read a biography of Caroline that really fleshed out who she is beyond the woman who appears in the news handing out Profiles in Courage awards. This book is no exception. And if you are looking for shocking revelations about Caroline, the best Heymann can come up with is that she may have smoked some pot as a college student in the 1970s. And her forever appearances-conscious mother gave her a hard time about her weight.

Heymann in fact seems less than fond of Caroline and spends about two pages accusing her of exploitation in her publishing ventures, particularly the book of her mother's favorite poems. Personally I found that book to be quite tastefully done, but in any event, are we to believe that Heymann's Kennedy tell-alls were written for charitable purposes? Seems a bit hypocritical to me.

All in all, if you've never read a Kennedy biography, this could be an interesting read. The material on John could be fascinating to those new to the subject, and compared to other John Jr. biographers, Heymann's treatment of Carolyn Bessette is quite sympathetic. On the other hand, if you have read any of the previous books about Jackie and/or John Jr., you may find yourself a bit bored with this one, as I was. For those in that group, I'd find a used copy, or wait for the cheaper paperback version.

this was five hundred pages or so of more than i ever wanted to know about the kennedy family. in my humble opinion, they talked that poor family to death. no one can come out looking good under that kind of scrutiny.

Even If You've Read About the Kennedys Before....Buy This Book

I think I've read nearly every book ever written on the Kennedy family but this is my favorite, by far. I received it two days ago and am already done--because it's hard to put down once you've started. Heymann has managed to interview people who've never talked much before about Jacqueline, John and Caroline and the result is a compilation of stories and anecdotes never revealed before. It's a fair, well-balanced account of the lives of two of the most famous offspring in American history, providing insights into the relationship between the two siblings, as well as some of the feelings each had about the other's spouse. Without "bashing" either Ed Schlossberg or Carolyn Bessette, it helps the reader better understand their personalities and the complications of life within the Kennedy clan. All in all, I would rank it an excellent summer read and certainly one of the best accounts, to date, of the choices made and lives lived by Caroline and John. While one can never know completely what makes people "tick," readers will come away with the most in-depth view thus far revealed about two children raised in the spotlight and the values, experiences, and inherent personalities which shaped their respective lives.

Kendrick's latest must-read

Becca is tired of playing it safe with her overbearing fiance Kevin (who outlined their "10-year plan" when they were dating). Now halfway into it, she feels suffocated and aspires to be a fashion designer. But Becca has always stood on the sidelines and let Kevin and her sisters Claire and Gayle run over her. When Kevin chooses the parcel of land as well as the design of their future home, Becca has had enough and decides to take a break to go to LA and pursue dreams.

Residing in newly married Claire's guesthouse, she immediately finds a job at a popular Hollywood eatery, giving her plenty of time to shop her portfolio around LA by day. She is immediately intrigued by the restaurant's owner Connor, a thrill-seeking adventurer who does not mix business with pleasure. The restaurant is a hotbed of Hollywood activity, and soon she has an appointment with a design house as well as stylist for Hollywood's "It" girl. Getting a new job leaves the door open for a relationship with Connor. But Becca learns the hard way that things are not always as they seem, and finds that the fashion industry can be as heartbreaking as a lover with a death wish.

Meanwhile, petulant, self-centered and snobby sister Claire is having marriage problems when her Hollywood power-broker husband does something ethical, then gets fired. With twins on the way, will they be forced to eat government cheese and shop at Big Lots? As her parents work with Kevin to attempt a reconciliation, what's a girl to do?

Written in first person, Kendrick's latest is filled with charismatic characters, witty banter, and some of the cheesiest pick up lines to grace the written page. Though a little scatter brained at times, Becca is an endearing character you can't help but root for. Kendrick has the uncanny ability to create lifelike characters using realistic dialogue that draws you in and holds your attention.

Couldn't put it down!

I loved this book and couldn't put it down once I started reading. I liked that Becca took a stand and decided she needed to live her own life, not the life her fiance and her family wanted. This book is about stepping out of your comfort zone and taking a risk in order to live the life of your dreams. I will definitely read more by this author.

Fashionably Late is Oh So Good

There's nothing like a marriage proposal to jolt you into reality and make you wonder what exactly you want out of life. When Becca Davis of "Fashionably Late" is proposed to by her longtime boyfriend Kevin, she accepts, but almost immediately realizes that it isn't what she wants.

Instead, she decides to break the engagement and flee to Los Angeles to try and pursue her true passion of fashion design. She moves in with her sister and jumps into the industry bravely, not realizing how cut-throat and catty the industry is. She is forced to take a job at a restaurant to make ends meet while pursuing her dream.

Meanwhile, back home in Arizona, Kevin thinks that she will be back when she comes to her senses. What he doesn't realize is that Becca has met someone else, sort of: the handsome Connor, who trades corny (but hilarious) pick-up lines with Becca, but who isn't the type to settle down. Although he seems awfully interested.

With so many roadblocks and heartaches going on with both her personal life and career, Becca must figure it all out: what does she really want? What was she meant to do with her life?

As with Beth Kendrick's other books, I thoroughly enjoyed "Fashionably Late". It is filled with laugh-out-loud moments, crackling romantic tension, the ups and downs of following your dreams, and Kendrick's signature witty, addictive writing style. She somehow manages to create characters that are so real, down-to-earth, flawed, yet at the same time endearing. Becca is a little clueless at times and doesn't always make the right choices, she is easy to identify with and like.

Overall I highly recommend this to all Beth Kendrick fans, and to anyone who wants to read a great chick lit novel filled with style, humor, wit and a touch of romance.

The main drama in Bronte's novel happens in a long narrative told by an elderly housekeeper to a convalescing new tenant. This story-within-a-story setup makes it well suited for audio adaptation, as Scales takes the housekeeper's part and relates the past, while West performs as the tenant and describes the present. Scales primarily uses a folksy lower-class accent, but she also makes her voice harsh and threatening when speaking as Heathcliff, the surly man at the novel's heart. West, as the bewildered tenant, manages to sound both nervous and pretentious, but his part is fairly small, especially with this abridgment, so he mostly serves to provide transitions for the housekeeper's story. The extensive abridgment generally deletes sentences and phrases rather than entire paragraphs or sections. One drawback for the audio format is the difficulty of clarifying the novel's convoluted plot and family tree, since it's harder to search back through long CD tracks than through earlier chapters of the paperback. While a little of the depth of Bronte's writing is lost in abridgment, the novel's emotional core remains intact and wrenching, and the actors' heartfelt interpretations make it easy to imagine being curled up by a warm fire listening to an absorbing tale. In June, Penguin Audio remastered and released on CD for the first time nine other Penguin Classics: Crime and Punishment, Dracula, Frankenstein, Great Expectations, Jane Eyre, Moby Dick, Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility and Tale of Two Cities.

Grade 8 Up-British actor Martin Shaw reads this shortened version of the classic Emily Bronte novel. His easily-understood accent is appropriate and helps to set the mood. Shaw reads at a very steady pace, pausing effectively for emphasis or when his character might be thinking. Usually calm and gentle, his voice can resonate with anger or other emotion when necessary. There is some differentiation in pitch to emphasize male vs. female speech, but it is not exaggerated or overdone. The abridgement retains Bronte's words linking speech or narration sometimes from one page to another. It provides students with an easier way to become familiar with the story and get a feel for her style. Teachers could use this presentation to introduce the novel or to entice students to read it on their own.

Jane was a sweet person ♥

I felt really sorry for Jane when she was a child living with her stepmother and three kids. They were so horrible to her, they hit her, verbally abused her, they just sucked as people!

When Jane was so down and seemed to me to have a little bit of a mental breakdown from all that was done to her, a nice man came to visit her and see that she was okay. Mr. Lloyd asked Jane many things and one of them was about her wanting to go to school. These string of questions and kindness from Mr. Lloyd led Jane to be placed in the Lowood school for charity cases. Jane learned so many things from the school. When she first got there though, the school was run by some prickly people that over time either didn't bother her, or they went away. The overseer of the school, a Mr. Brocklehurst, was a complete •ss to the girls. I despised him. He would come in spouting stuff about God not liking girls with curls or braids and they could never dress up (not that they had means to do this). He was just a horrid man, he made them get all of their hair cut. Please dude, God doesn't care what girls do with their hair but you should be worrying about where your going to spend eternity!

Jane had a wonderful friend named Helen Burn and it broke my heart when she died. A lot of the girls died when the disease came through. The only thing good that came out of this was that some people started paying attention to the school and made sure they started feeding the children right and did good by them.

Jane ending up teaching some of the younger girls when she was eighteen until she procured a job teaching a young girl named Adele at Thornfield Hall. I enjoyed reading about Jane's time there even though it went off the rails a little bit when she found out some things about the owner of the house. Mr. Rochester seemed to be a strange man to me, but him and Jane fell in love. They were to be wed... but some stuff got in the way. Some really strange and sad stuff.

Jane ended up going away for awhile and was helping out St. John in ministry. Some stuff happened with him and Jane is off again. She comes back to Thornfield Hall and finds out the misery that befell the place.

Jane did reunite with some old friends and loves lost. It was a sweet, if not a little, sad of an ending.

5 stars. Great story

Jane Eyre is a wonderfully written novel. You are invited into her world as she sees it thru her eyes. An unloved orphan in a house of wealth treated like cinderella..to some extent. Sent away to an orphange. Her first encounter receiving love is bittersweet as death swoops in once again. Years go by and she finds a position in Mr. Rochesters home. Such a burley and grumpy master...another tortured soul. Love blooms and then is stolen away. She runs. She finds family. Is offered a position in India but the propsect of love is not part of the deal. She can no longer live in a loveless world. She backtracks in search of any scrap of information for the man that brought loce into her world. It seems death has once again swooped in to torture her again. Was death successful? Or can love lift itself from the ashes?? You will have to read it for yourself. I love Jane Eyre!!

A good book- but something was missing.

This book was full of big literary words and complex descriptions. One could really learn something about writing from reading this book. The actual storyline is another thing, however.
I had great heart for the love story in the beginning of this book. It was captivating and interesting, though I felt like it had been undermined in detail and voice. It ended abruptly and instead turned to Heathcliff's progression into lonely violence and longing. I felt as though the book focused on the wrong characters- Heathcliff should have definitely of had more page time. The love story between Heathcliff's son and Catherine's daughter is a replay of their parent's once vibrant love, but had fallen apart just like theirs had. It gives the reader the feeling that the inability to relate and understand each other is rooted in their genes, so the two families might never find true love despite their passion.
I debated whether or not to consider this book 'on my shelf' (would read again) or not. Through the whole story, I felt like something was missing. I could not decipher what. The author seemed to have been holding back on something in the beginning but the plot had gone wayward from her original idea, and she was no longer able to express it. This alone prevents me from giving it five stars and leaving it 'off my shelf'.
