Comedienne Mo'Nique, the bold, classy sitcom star, Queen of Comedy, and two-time NAACP Image Award winner, is at it again. This time she proves once and for all that Skinny Women Are Evil. Mo'Nique shares her tales of frustration in a world designed for the skinny, and lets us in on the tricks and manipulation that finally led her to declare the truth about the real weight-challenged. From travel, exercise, and raising kids, to shopping, dining out, and sex, she tackles the everyday things that make life tough for Fabulous and Thick (F.A.T.) girls.

With Mo's handy Thin-O-Meter as a guide, you'll know immediately whether you're dealing with a skinny evil woman whose goal is to control and change the F.A.T., or a cool thin one who's big at heart. As Mo'Nique puts it, if after two bites of food she proclaims, "I'm stuffed," she's evil. If she asks if you're pregnant, and you're not, then chances are she's evil.

Mo'Nique also discusses how family can impact the F.A.T. She describes in hilarious detail how sibling rivalry takes the form of under-the-breath remarks. Mo'Nique talks about how her grandmother forbade her to eat ice because, "it'll make you fatter."

Ever wondered how to pick the best place for happy hour? Or how to skillfully pack appetizers in your purse? The self-proclaimed culinary connoisseur answers those important questions, and may change the way you dine or, perhaps, where.

After constantly finding frustration and insult with today's fashions, Mo'Nique set her sights on making sure that the F.A.T. have options. So she created her own fashion line and provides a list of designers that respect the curves. She tells it like it is when talking about how F.A.T. love offers more than cushion for the pushin'. She explains the exercise thing in terms BIG girls can relate to, and believes that getting in shape shouldn't be full of frustration, embarrassment, and pain.

The comedienne also tackles the trials of TUBBY travels. She asks how can the F.A.T. truly "fly the friendly skies" if they're made to feel uncomfortable and the subject of lawsuits?

Whether you tip the scales at a puny 100 pounds, or weigh in at a voluptuous 225, Skinny Women Are Evil is filled with stories and observations only this comedy heavyweight can bring. So, sit back and get comfortable. After reading Skinny Women Are Evil, you'll be singing the praises of FATTY girls, too!

From Publishers Weekly
Actress Mo'Nique, of UPN's The Parkers, has been large since she was a kid. When she was rejected as a teenager trying out for the cheerleading squad, she responded, Damn it, do you know how hard it is to get 200 pounds up in the air? I should have made the squad for that trick alone. Accustomed to being called Chunky Butt and Shamu, Mo'Nique has a pretty bright outlook on life; for her, it's one's mind, not the size of her behind, that counts. She explains why fat trumps thin and advises single-digit sisters (those whose dress size is eight or smaller) to move over or scoot the fuck out of the way because the FAT is gonna hit the fire and you will get burned. The author's belief that society places too much emphasis on being thin is unquestionably sound, but her manner of empowering big women leaves much to be desired. Instead of helping readers, Mo'Nique denigrates them (e.g., a typical day for a big girl, she says, includes less than five hours of work and the rest of the day eating and socializing; while a skinny girl spends over 12 hours working and the rest of the day eating and exercising). Although Mo'Nique's brassy style, blunt prose and lack of organization may not faze her readers, the book isn't likely to change society's treatment of big women and merely perpetuates a stereotype.

Disgraceful Book
By mstrina911
I am a plus size female who is very confident, fashionable and poised. I purchased this book because I wanted to see Monique's attemp to uplift the Big Girls. I was very disappointed and would not reccommend this book to anyone. This book does nothing but perpetuate sterotypes and encourage Big Girls to eat until they can't walk. This was an autobiography of sorts and pretty much talks about her experience. I couldn't relate to most the themes expressed in this book, as my day does not revolve around food. If you let her tell it, Big Girls eat all day every day and when we are at the mall we stop two or times to eat. It was just rediculous. In addition, the depiction of slim girls was just wrong. This was a waste of money. I'm glad I only ordered a used version for a couple of bucks. Hopefully, someone will write a real book that speaks about self-acceptance, finding your way and being your own fabulous self.

Very Funny
By Chanzy
This book had me rolling, I'm a fan and when I saw she had written a book(yes with someone else but whatever)I was on board. Being fat at the time also figured into my decision. Long story short, get the audio version, simply because it is like a 2 hour stand up and worth the price. The best part is now Monique is skinny.

Say it Loud: I'm THICK and I'm PROUD
By L. Taylor Grover
Some of the reviews I read earlier on this book made me wary of purchasing it, but I enjoy Mo's comedic material, and I decided to give the book a read....
This book is written conversationally and follows the same flow as much of the talented comedienne's stand-up routines. While there were many jokes about eating and fatness, she did admonish those of us who are "thick" or "fluffy" to take care of ourselves: exercising moderately daily, not overindulging in fat-laced foods, and receiving regular physical check-ups. She extols on the virtues of loving oneself, embracing tasteful feminity at any size, and tactfully addressing the problems of fat discrimination and put-downs by so-called "evil ones" -- those who will overlook one's virtues and character simply because she is overweight.
Reading her book was an absolute delight, and her antecdotes interweaved with her personal and familial experiences make this book a must-read!

From Publishers Weekly
Country music sensation and CMA Entertainer of the Year McGraw goes multimedia with the publication of a pictorial diary about the making of his album Tim McGraw and the Dancehall Doctors. To hear the singer and country music stalwarts tell it, McGraw broke all the rules on his latest outing: rather than record in Nashville with technically brilliant session players (par for the country music course), McGraw decided to have his buddies from his road band, the Dancehall Doctors, back him in an upstate New York farmhouse-cum-studio. From the project's initial planning and reception to its ultimate realization, this volume presents a view of McGraw and his band that's as slick and upbeat as the best PR material. McGraw loves and respects his long-time band members (they're the "guys who knew you when you were borrowing money from them," he says affectionately); and they, in turn, seem deeply fond and admiring of him. In first-person snippets that dot the text, musicians, producers, engineers and techies wax poetic about McGraw's artistic integrity, his intuitiveness, his desire to please fans, his ability to pick songs (he doesn't write his own) and his refusal to do easy hits-even how much women appreciate his posterior. There are basic biographical snippets-Tim dropped out of college, taught himself how to play guitar and then moved to Nashville; even when he couldn't pay the heating bills, his friends knew he'd become a star-and lots of pictures of McGraw and friends, as well as reasonably interesting discussions about making the album itself, which will be released simultaneously. Real fans will embrace this volume, as long as they're not looking for real insight: this is as feel-good as it comes.

Tim McGraw The Greatest Male Country Artist I Know
By Becki Daugherty
Well The first time I read Tim's Book I was at Barns & Noble. I picked the book up and started reading it. I didn't even get through the first chapter before I decided that I had to have this book. Unfortuanatly I didn't have enough Money to get it so I told my parents that I wanted it for Christmas. I was sure that my dad would get it for me but needless to say he didn't. It didn't think I had until I opened my last gift Christmas morning form my brother and his fiance. There it was on top of a pale yellow sweater. I was so excited! As soon as I got ready to go to my grandmother's house for Christmas dinner I sat down and started reading it while waiting on my parents to get ready.
The book was so great that I finished it in three days. It told all about his life as a singer as well as his band. The main thing that I liked was how he kept saying that his style and ways of creating his music is different from anyone elses. I have never heard of an artist turn down a song for them but suggest it for another artist. I just think that is awesome of him. It shows that he's not all about him. Yeah he wants to make good music for all his fans but it has to be something that he would listen to too.
Another thing I liked about the book was the part that he talked about recording his new album. It was really great how he created the gift boxes for all the guys in the band. He just wanted them to feel comfortable away from home. And all the pictures they have of them recording up there shows that it was hard work but they still had fun. I don't know it was just a great book and I would recommend it to anyone to read.

A Great Look At Tim McGraw, His Band, and Their New CD
By November
This is a great book about country singer Tim McGraw, his band: the Dancehall Doctors, and how their new CD came together.
Throughout the book there are many picture of Tim and his band; both from in the studio, and from on the road over the past several years. There are also a lot of quotes and stories told by Tim, his band members, and by other people involved in making his albums and his live shows.
The books starts out by telling why Tim decided to record this album with his band, instead of the studio musicians that play on most country albums. There are also pages on each of his band members, who have all been with him for many years. They tell how they met Tim and how they came to work with him, and how they became involved with music. Also the book tells where they decided to record the CD, and what it was like making the record.
Before I read the book I thought it might include a lot of information that I probably already knew. However, as I was reading it, I found that it included a lot of new pictures, and a lot of stories about recording the new CD that I had not read anywhere else. As a McGraw fan for many years I really enjoyed this book.

I LIKE IT, I LOVE IT!
By A Customer
I just love This is OURS! Tim really is such a humble entertainer and it is so nice to read what feels a little at times like a diary... or a personal note from Tim. I totally love all the pictures... there are truly some awesome ones in there that are great just for browsing. However, when I received mine - I was totally absorbed in the reading. I did not even look ahead at pictures (didn't want to spoil any of the moments prior to reading what accompanied it all... I have been a fan of Tim from the beginning, but I just LOVED learning more and more about the DHDs and hearing people thoughts through the process. It has a real intimate feel to me... TRUE TIM fans must have this book... and anyone else should have one to learn more about this extraordinary entertainer. He is such a humble man yet a really smart business man. He is not too insecure to share the enormous spotlight with his friends - his extension of his family - his band!

From Publishers Weekly
Fans of space opera who have been eagerly awaiting this sequel to Weber and White's In Death Ground (1997) won't be disappointed, to put it mildly. Humanity and its various allies find themselves under attack by an enemy with whom no communication, let alone coexistence, is possible, since their foes lack individual sentience and are driven by a Darwinian imperative to regard all other life forms as food sources. Countered against this nightmare are an assortment of diverse species, some unknown to one another, who share the ability to make moral choices, "including the ultimate choice of sacrificing that very individual consciousness in the name of what all of us recognize, in one form or another, for what it is: honor." This capacity is stretched when it is discovered that, in this war, genocide is a tactical weapon. The authors have created a fictional reality with all of the verisimilitude of a technothriller, but this doesn't credit them enough, since unlike, say, Tom Clancy, they have had to create their own weapons, tactics and even societies. Characterizations are strong and vivid, particularly the Human and Orion command team that spearheads the fight and a fighter pilot who's haunted by the ghosts of her dead. Ultimately, Weber and White have written an exposition, in the form of a novel, of Heinlein's axiom that "ethics are a survival mechanism," leaving the reader both exhilarated and enriched. From Library Journal
In the 24th century, the Grand Alliance, made up of four sentient, allied races, finds itself on the losing end of the ongoing war against the Bugs, a hostile race of spacefaring, alien carnivores intent on conquest. In desperate straits, the warriors of the Alliance muster a last-ditch effort to destroy their enemy once and for all regardless of the cost. Coauthors Weber ("Honor Harrington" series) and White (Eagle Against the Stars) excel at large-scale military sf, combining intense scenes of interstellar battle with compelling portraits of men and women locked in interminable war. Along with its series predecessors Insurrection, Crusade, and In Death Ground, this title belongs in most collections.
Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
The fourth, apparently concluding volume of a space-war saga drawn from the Starfire game brings the war of humanity and its allies against the Arachnids, aka Bugs, to a thunderous and bloody climax. The alliance gradually assembles a picture of the configuration of Bug space and therewith the strategy for attacking it. Meanwhile a strayed surveying expedition stumbles on the Solar Union of Crucis, a multispecies addition to the anti-Arachnid coalition. The good guys do not, however, have it all their own way, for the younger of the Prescott brothers dies in action, and the Bugs' technical ingenuity and ruthless use of kamikaze tactics make them very tough opponents. The strategic edge swings back and forth, with intelligence, logistics, and training all factored in, right up to the finale. The story requires high tolerance for sweeping space battles, but quite an audience exhibits such tolerance, even if only a minority may appreciate the many evidences of Weber and White's expertise in naval history to be found in between the fights. Out of Control Military SciFi
By seahorse
Dave Weber totally rocks. Loved the earlier books in this series, LOVE the Honor Harrington books. Need to say that first, so I can then say this one was not as enjoyable as most of his other books. It has a problem it shared with the last (or the next previous, I forget) Honor Harrington book - there's so much military technology worship going on that the scifi part is definitely short-changed. Both books promised so much - big fat ones that should last for days. But when as much as HALF of the book is going on and on about armaments, and new armaments, and comparing armaments, and in this case, one space battle after another (and THIS time they started with the fighters; and THIS time the enemy did this so we had to start with missiles and follow with gunboats; and THIS time . ..). You get to the end and you realize the storyline was pretty paltry. I like to see these characters' lives advanced, but to be frank there needs to be more of a balance between characters/story and loving descriptions of ships, operational roles and weapons capabilities. If there was only this much story to tell, the book simply should have been shorter.

Out of Control Military SciFi

Dave Weber totally rocks. Loved the earlier books in this series, LOVE the Honor Harrington books. Need to say that first, so I can then say this one was not as enjoyable as most of his other books. Excellent ending....
By Peter Sthlberg
I've been a great fan of David Webers books many years now. The most famous "Honor Harrington" series is truly great to read.
I found this book without actually looking for it. And by the look of it seemed interesting. So I got this one and the one before it (which is part one out of a two part series) which is called "In death ground". This book ends the story but you should really read the former one first to get all the needed backstory and a proper beginning.
There is a lot of charachters. Some deeper compared to others. Also a great deal of space battles. Epic ones to be honest. The basic conflict is about two VERY different ways of life. Two extremly different kind of life: ours and our allies and the "Arachnids" who sees us as simpy food. This time EVERYTHING is on the line and loosing the war simply is NOT an option!

Utterly stunned, Mia is wary and delighted -- she may have suffered a broken heart, but her breathtakingly handsome lover is back to reignite the passion that existed between them. Little does she know that Rafael has returned to give his newfound son a proper upbringing back in Calandria -- even if it means seducing Mia into marriage. From Publishers Weekly
The finale of Mallery's Marcelli family series (after The Marcelli Bride) is a charming but exasperating misfire. Mia Marcelli is shocked to wake up in her California home next to the father of her four-year-old son, a man she believed had been killed. It turns out that he's not the thief she thought he was, but rather Crown Prince Rafael of Calandria. She doesn't yet know it, but he's come to claim his love child and heir—and once his son is on Calandrian soil, Mia will have no legal rights to him. Rather then deal honestly with Mia, Rafael schemes to get his son before the truth is revealed, giving him all the more work to do when the time comes to redeem himself. Most of the previously introduced Marcelli clan return in this book, but Mia and her family are its best part. The sexist, duty-bound Rafael is a one-note brooder who doesn't do much to win over the reader, despite some humor and strong chemistry between the leads. Mia's unlikely history as a secret agent and the "disguised prince's secret baby" premise may require more suspension of disbelief than readers can spare, though series fans will find much to enjoy in the family dynamics. Chapter One

Mia Marcelli was used to sleeping alone so it came as something of a shock to wake up with a strange man in her bed. She did what any other self-actualized, self-defense-trained woman would do -- she screamed and jumped to her feet.

"Big mistake," she yelled as she backed toward the door. "You shouldn't have broken in here. I have access to weapons, and grandmothers who don't like this sort of thing. My brother's a former Navy SEAL."

The man sat up and smiled at her. "I see you still talk too much, Mia. When an unknown man appears in your bed, you should run."

He knew her name. That startled her nearly as much as the fact that he was giving her advice. It didn't seem like normal behavior for a guy intent on raping and pillaging. Assuming anyone really pillaged these days.

She paused by the door and pushed her bangs out of her face. There was something familiar about the man. The hair and eye color were all wrong, but the shape of his face reminded her of someone. And that mouth -- she would remember it until she died.

"Diego?" she breathed, knowing this stranger couldn't be him. Diego was dead. She'd seen the bullets hit his body, had watched him fall to the ground. There'd been so much blood.

"Am I that different?" the man asked as he stood and smiled at her. "Has so much changed?"

It was him, she thought, too stunned to do much more than gasp. "H-how is this possible? Why aren't you dead? I saw you die. Dead people don't have conversations."

"It is a long story. Perhaps one I could tell you over breakfast."

That voice. She would know it anywhere. It had haunted her dreams for the past five years.

Dead people also don't eat. "Get back," she said, feeling both shocked and angry. When in doubt, get pissed off.

It was a philosophy she'd learned worked for her. "I don't know what this game is, but I'm not playing it."

"Mia, it is I. You must recognize me."

"Must I?"

Right now she didn't have to do anything but keep from having a heart attack from the shock, and wish she kept a weapon in her room. Something big and scary.

The bedroom door flew open and her two grandmothers burst inside. Grandma Tessa had a fire poker in one hand, and Grammy M threatened Diego with a rolling pin.

"Call Joe," Tessa ordered Mia. "He'll take care of this scumbag."

Scumbag? Someone had been watching just a little too many police dramas.

"I'm not sure he's a scumbag," Mia said, still finding it difficult to believe her own eyes. "I might know this guy."

"You do know me," he said, his voice washing over her like a familiar and welcome memory. "Mia, it is I."

Diego? Was it possible? Conflicting emotions raced through her. She wanted to run into his arms and have him hold her forever. At the same time she wanted to grab the poker and beat him over the head with it.

"You're supposed to be dead," she said, still confused and angry, and maybe just a little scared. Because if this guy really was Diego, she was going to have a lot of explaining to do.

"So you keep saying," he told her, sounding more amused than anything else. "Would you be more happy if I were?"

"It would make more sense. I don't believe in ghosts...or vampires."

He actually smiled. "Good, because I am neither. Mia," -- he took a step toward her -- "trust your eyes and your heart. I am the man you knew as Diego."

"We don't trust people who pretend to be someone else," Grandma Tessa said with surprising force despite her small stature and advanced years. "Who do you think you are now?"

"I know I am Rafael, Crown Prince of Calandria."

Mia rolled her eyes. Great -- a crazy man in her bedroom, and she hadn't even had coffee yet. "Right, and I'm the Sleeping Beauty."

This had gone on long enough. Mia took the poker from her grandmother and held it out in front of her. "That's it. I don't know who you are or what you want, but you're in big trouble. Grammy M, call Joe." She shook the poker at the intruder. "As for you, big guy, you stay right there or I'll take you out. Don't think I can't. I've had professional training."

The man who looked amazingly like Diego had the balls to smile at her again. "I'm not going anywhere, Mia. I came to see you. I've waited five years to be with you again. I can certainly wait until you're willing to listen to reason."

Reason? "Not my strong suit. I'm more into react now, say 'Oops' later. If you're who you say you are, you should know that."

"I know many things, including the fact that you once wore a silver ring bought in a market. It was a foolish trinket, yet oddly valuable to us both."

Mia's gaze involuntarily darted to the bottom drawer of her dresser. She remembered the ring and the man who bought it for her.

He took a step closer. "I know other things," he said, his voice low and seductive. "I know how you like to be kissed and touched and where you like to -- "

"Hey," she said loudly, doing her best to both shut him up and break the spell he attempted to weave. "Grandmothers present. Let's avoid too much information."

Slowly she lowered the poker and looked at him. He was the right height and physical type. His voice was the same, as was his arrogance. His smile made her thighs go up in flames, which hadn't happened even once in the past five years. She wanted to believe because once she'd loved him so much, she'd thought knowing he was dead was going to kill her, too.

But what about the other changes? The color of his eyes, the hair, the scar? Then she remembered her brief time in a world of deception and secrecy, where people could easily be made to look different. Contact lenses, a quick dye job, and little glue -- voilá, a new man.

"I assume you have some ID on you," she said, trying to hold on to her anger, because it was safe. Only she was feeling more confused than anything else. Shouldn't she get coffee before an event like this? And maybe a cinnamon roll?

"Walk to the window," he said.

She raised the poker again and shook it at him. "You walk to the window."

He sighed. "I see you are still stubborn. Very well, Mia, we will walk together."

She eyed him warily as he moved to the window and pulled open the drapes. Keeping him at arm's-plus-poker length, she glanced down and saw a very shiny black car complete with what looked like flags flying from the front. Flags amazingly similar to the royal coat of arms of Calandria.

"So you have access to a limo, and an active imagination. That proves nothing." Actually, it kind of proved something, but she wasn't going to admit that.

He raised both hands. "As you wish. May I show you my passport?"

Her throat tightened and her mouth went dry. Man, she really wanted to brush her teeth and take a shower and get some coffee. Because after all those normal activities, none of this would be real anymore.

"Sure," she muttered. "Whatever."

But her heart began to beat faster. She didn't know if she accepted the premise that he was Diego, back from the dead, but she was halfway to being convinced. Which made no sense and gave her a stomachache.

If Diego wasn't dead, then where the hell had he been for the past five years and why hadn't he found her and told her the truth? She'd mourned him and ached for him, and what, he'd been off being some prince?

Because that's what scared her the most. That he really was Diego and Diego was in fact the prince of Calandria. The knowledge would rock her world and she didn't know how she was going to recover. Because having the child of a bad boy turned art thief was one thing, but having the child of an heir to a throne was quite another.

He pulled his passport out of his suit jacket and handed it to her. She glanced at the cover, then nodded at Grandma Tessa. "Let her read it."

Mia told herself she didn't want to look at it because she needed to keep her attention on Diego...or possibly Prince Rafael of Calandria. But in truth, she didn't want to see the words printed there.

Tessa opened the passport. Grammy M moved in close and stared over her shoulder.

"A very flattering picture," Grammy M said, smiling at him.

"Thank you."

He was all graciousness and confidence, and he didn't seem the least bit intimidated by the poker in Mia's hand, which made her want to bonk him with it.

Grandma Tessa stared at the print on the page, then looked at Mia. "It says he's the prince. Crown Prince Rafael of Calandria. Prince is even listed as his occupation."

Oh God. This couldn't be good.

"Of course it could be a fake," Tessa said cheerfully. "People do it all the time. A couple of hundred bucks and you have a new passport."

Definitely too much TV, Mia thought.

"A prince," Grammy M said, eyeing Rafael. "There'll be a castle, then, with the title?"

He nodded. "Of course. We're also very rich."

Grammy M beamed at Mia. "So, maybe you'll be inviting your friend the prince to breakfast?"

Mia wanted to scream. "He broke in to my bedroom. We don't know who he really is. The last time I saw him, he was dead, and you want to invite him to breakfast?"

Grammy M slipped her arm through Diego's...or Rafael's...and walked him to the door. "So, how will you be taking your coffee?"

Mia watched them go, then dropped the poker to the floor. "Somebody shoot me now. I know matchmaking is a time-honored Marcelli tradition, but could we please first find out the man in question isn't an ax murderer?"

Grandma Tessa handed her the passport. "You're the one who'd know that. Is he who he says he is?"

Mia stared at the picture. So much the same and yet so much different, she thought. Was it possible Diego hadn't died that night? That he was really the Crown Prince of Calandria?

"I don't know," she admitted. "I don't know anything."

Grandma Tessa moved to the door. "He was supposed to have been killed five years ago?"

Mia nodded.

"So he's Danny's father."

She nodded again.

"Then this is going to be interesting....

Not her best
By S. Cochran
I usually love Susan Mallery's books, and have loved the others in this series about the Marcellis. The best part of this one is the updates on all the characters from the previous books. I still liked Mia in this book, but Rafael was unlikeable, and his sudden change in behavior at the end did not ring true to his personality in the rest of the book.

Also, I know this is nitpicking, but where was the Secret Service?? Joe is married to the President's daughter, and they live on the same property, yet this Prince broke into the house, and his bodyguards roamed freely with guns. For some reason I could not get past that, and it hindered my enjoyment of the story somewhat. Wouldn't the President's daughter have Secret Service protection?

It was not a bad book, just not one of her best.

Hugely disappointing end to a once great series
By Tracy Vest
When former CIA agent Mia Marcelli wakes up to find a stranger in her bed, she's shocked to learn that he's the lover she mourned for the last five years. Instead of being an international thief named Diego, he's actually crown prince of the tiny principality of Calandria (think Monaco), who assumed Diego's identity to trap his band of merry thieves. Mia has a surprise for Prince Rafael - in the form of their four year old son Danny. But Rafael already knows about Danny; in fact, he was sent by the King to retrieve Danny so that he can take his place in Calandrian society as heir to the throne. He is not above bribery or seduction to get his way. When Mia finds out about his true intentions, will her love for him (or is it Diego?) be strong enough to forgive his treachery?

Mallery's final installment in the Marcelli family series is a major let down. Never mind the suspension of time (less than a year since the last book in the series was published, and she wasn't even an agent yet), the children that age faster than in a soap opera, and the lack of chemistry between the two main characters. The plot starts out interesting, but the execution is rather boring, the dialogue stilted, and the "hero" so unsympathetic (and his sudden change of heart unconvincing), that I'm sure more than one reader wished she got back with her teen fiance, David instead of investing further tears on her Euro-trash prince. Let's just hope there's no story for Kelly in the works to further tarnish the Marcelli name.

I had pretty high expectations going in, particularly since the previous novel was so good. Rather than going out with a bang telling the most colorful of the Marcelli children's stories, Mallery instead ends the series on a sour note. I was also disappointed in another Mallery release ("Sizzling" from the Buchanan series) this year; perhaps Mallery needs to worry more about quality and less about churning out quantity.

Very Disappointing
By Seriously
Susan Mallery is becoming one of those hit or miss writers for me. Either she does it really well (i.e. The Sassy One, The Seductive One) or she completely throws you for a loop (Sizzling, The Marcelli Princess). I was really disappointed in The Marcelli Princess because I love this series, but the hero and heroine in this last installment are both annoying. I literally forced myself to keep reading. For an independent woman Mia relies too much on her family, lovely as they are, and Rafael's archaic sensibility makes him almost irredeemable. In my opinion, the best thing about this book is the chemistry that happens when the two are alone and the fact that we get to see how the beloved Marcellis from previous installments have fared. My recommendation: Get it from the library if you must, but don't buy it.

From Library Journal
In order to quell widespread rumors about their supposed murderous intentions, Elizabeth I and Sir Robert Dudley dispatch one of her ladies-in-waiting, young widowed mother Ursula Blanchard, to help tend Lord Dudley's sickly wife, Amy. Despite Ursula's friendly attentions, Amy dies violently. Ursula's subsequent search for the murderer of a trusted retainer uncovers evidence of Catholic scheming and tests her love for a dashing Frenchman. Buckley's tantalizing re-creation of Elizabethan life and manners is told with intelligence and gentle wit. A noteworthy debut and first of a series.

From Kirkus Reviews
An accomplished debut set in 1560 at the Court of Queen Elizabeth I. Impoverished young widow Ursula Blanchard, whose mother had served Queen Elizabeth's mother, has agreed to join Elizabeth's Ladies of the Presence Chamber. Estranged from her own and her late husband's families, she leaves behind her faithful groom John Wilton and puts small daughter Meg in the care of nursemaid Bridget. Once at Court, Ursula grows quickly aware of gossip about the young, unmarried Queen and her Master of the Horse, Robin Dudley. Dudley's wife Amy is said to be dying (amid rumors of poisoning) at Cumnor Place, some miles away. Her death, of course, would free Dudley to marry the Queen--an unpopular idea in many high places. Meanwhile, Ursula has acquired a suitor of her own--the wealthy Frenchman Matthew de la Roche--but when Dudley asks her to move to Cumnor Place, to comfort Amy (and perhaps to stop the rumors), she readily agrees. The handsome salary will help to pay Bridget, her own maid Fran Dale, and newly rehired John Wilton. Ursula finds Cumnor Place a strange household where steward Forster rules with tightfisted authority, and she comes to believe that there is a plot on Amy's life. Events prove her right, but other plots are also afoot, one of them setting Ursula on a slippery path of self-denial and discovery. The pseudonymous Buckley, a British author who's written other nonmystery fiction, maintains high suspense throughout a lively debut that's filled with vivid characters, religious conflict, subplots, and power plays. Fiona Buckley introduces steely-nerved handmaiden Ursula Blanchard in this first thrilling adventure in a "sixteenth-century mystery series as complicated and charming as an Elizabethan knot garden." -- The Tampa Tribune

Interesting Mystery
By HL Dallas
I enjoyed this book quite a bit. It was an interesting account of the events of that time and it was nice that a historical fiction novel actually expected you to know a little bit of history in order to fully understand the book. Ursula was a highly likable character who proved to be interesting as well. This was a fun story and I can definitely allow Ms. Buckley a few liberties and imaginings of the true accounts of this bit of history. I can't wait to read further books in the series.

"Once more I saw the spoor of treason, how it prowled from one victim to another."
By Luan Gaines
A recent widow with a small child to support, Ursula Blanchard is fortunate to catch the attention of Sir William Cecil, Secretary of State to the new queen, Elizabeth, only eighteen months on the throne. Cecil finds a position for Ursula as one of Elizabeth's Ladies of the Presence Chamber, assuring a monthly income, although the young widow remains in dire financial straights. The court is currently rife with rumors of a romance between Sir Robert Dudley and Elizabeth, not the least of which is the matter of Dudley's wife, Amy, who is ill and isolated at their estate at Cumnor. When gossip insinuates a threat to Amy's life, so that Robert will be free to marry the Queen, Elizabeth and Dudley enjoin Ursula to go to Amy and assure her of their concern for their safety. Ursula agrees to the task, leaving behind a gentleman seeking to win her favor, Matthew de la Roche.

Amy Dudley is indeed pitiful, distraught at the loss of her husband's affections and suffering from what her physician has diagnosed as a terminal illness. Sympathetic to the young woman's plight, Ursula wins Amy's trust, reexamining Dudley and the Queen's motives for sending her on the mission. Certainly, strange comings and goings on the estate warrant suspicion as court rumors infiltrate even Cumnor. Unfortunately, Ursula cannot prevent the inevitable. When Amy suffers an "accident" that takes her life, it is impossible to determine the cause and Ursula reevaluates her position as servant or pawn to the Queen. Her own man killed while on a journey to deliver a vital message, Ursula sets out to find his murderers, at the same time stumbling upon a plot to challenge Elizabeth's throne.

Elizabeth's reign draws gossip by its very nature, as suitors and sycophants gather, currying royal favor and jockeying for power. Anyone close to the Queen is a target for malicious scheming and Dudley is no exception, a threat to others who would have the Queen's favor. With the best of intentions, the honorable Ursula is caught in a conundrum not of her making, doing the Queen's bidding yet unable to protect Amy Dudley from her fate. Her own future in jeopardy, Ursula is at the core of the scandal caused by Amy's death, faced with decisions that will not only determine her future happiness but influence the direction of the country. Luan Gaines/2006.

Long Way Round: Chasing Shadows Across the World, by Ewan McGregor, Charley Boorman

It started as a daydream. Poring over a map of the world at home one quiet Saturday afternoon, Ewan McGregor -- acclaimed actor and self-confessed bike nut -- noticed that it was possible to ride all the way round the world, with just one short hop across the Bering Strait from Russia to Alaska. It was a revelation he couldn't get out of his head. So he picked up the phone and called his fellow actor-slash-biker friend Charley Boorman and told him it was time to hit the road....
Long Way Round
Beginning in London, Ewan and Charley chased their shadows through Europe, the Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and Russia; across the Pacific to Alaska; then down through Canada all the way to New York. Long Way Round is the result of their four-month, 20,000-mile joyride. Featuring original diary entries, travel maps, mileage charts, and dozens of photographs, this is a freewheeling, fully charged, and uproariously entertaining book about two world-famous individuals who chose the road not taken...and made the journey worthwhile.
