Biggie: Voletta Wallace Remembers Her Son, Christopher Wallace, aka Notorious B.I.G., by Voletta Wallace

The legend of Notorious B.I.G. (born Christopher Wallace, but also known as Biggie Smalls), has only grown since he was murdered on the night of March 9, 1997 - executed at point-blank range through the passenger side of his car. Due to their tremendous influence on hip-hop culture as well as their untimely deaths, Biggie's name has been paired with Tupac Shakur's and held up as examples of how stars can rise and fall. In this touching book, Biggie's mother Voletta Wallace now brings a human face back to the icon that was her beloved son. In this lavishly illustrated memoir, with many never-before-published photographs, Voletta Wallace charts her son's climb to stardom, recalling Biggie's childhood in Brooklyn, and how she tried to keep her bright, precocious son on the straight and narrow. She shares memories of the night that her son was shot, when she rushed to Los Angeles to be with Biggie's wife, Faith Evans. Straightforward and candid, Voletta Wallace condemns her son's 'friends' - who treated her with little respect after Biggie's death - and shares serious misgivings about the treacherous nature of the entertainment industry. Finally, she delves deeply into her own personal life, discussing her health scare and ongoing efforts to identify the killers of her son. With new photographs and opinions concerning A-list members of the hip-hop community, in addition to theories behind her son's unsolved murder, "Biggie" is not only a poignant tribute from a mother to son, but an eye-opening read.

"Ms. Voletta Wallace is a gracious and wonderfully honest and sincere human being. I'm glad others are finally getting the opportunity to hear this very special soul share her grief, strength, hope and the painful reality of life without her precious baby boy."She is an incredibly strong woman who makes all of us proud of her grace in the face of ugliness. Read this book and remember this Jamaican American Queen and her uniquely talented son Christopher."-- Afeni Shakur-Davis

(RAW Rating: 3.5) - Biggie Remembered
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers
Voletta Wallace chronicles a slice of her life and that of her son, the Notorious B.I.G., in BIGGIE: Voletta Wallace Remembers Her Son. Born and raised in Jamaica, Voletta Wallace always had dreams of moving to America where it seemed everyone was rich, fashionable, and happy. She was a hard-working young woman who made her dreams a reality through perseverance and holding steadfast to her values of education and self-improvement. When she was unexpectedly blessed with a son, her life changed markedly. Instead of striving to improve herself for her own gain, Christopher became the central motivation to better her circumstances.

Although life seemed charmed once Biggie made it to superstardom, her grandchildren were born, and she had successfully fought breast cancer, devastation reigned in Voletta's life when Biggie was murdered while visiting Los Angeles. After being faced with this tragedy and the aftermath that it brought with it, Voletta was faced with even more challenges. Yet, she never let mishaps and unfortunate turns of events shatter her. She remains a strong figure in her family and in the entertainment industry.

While this was an interesting glimpse into how Biggie came up and the role his mother played in his life, I would like to have seen more insight and details. However, this isn't really a biography of Christopher Wallace, or even his alter ego, The Notorious B.I.G. Instead, it is more of a memorial piece that briefly touches on the life of a man who became a central figure in the rap game and touched the lives of his fans, his family and friends, and the world of hip-hop.

This book is well-written, heart-felt and poignant. Voletta Wallace shows true grit, honesty and courage in overcoming more than most of us could imagine. This is bigger than the story of the Notorious B.I.G.

Ms. Wallace's story is inspiring!

Shadows: A Novel, by Edna Buchanan

The Pulitzer Prize-winning "Queen of Crime" (USA Today) follows up Cold Case Squad with an explosive second novel about a dedicated, complicated homicide unit that breathes new life into old cases.

In order to block a high-rise developer's plans to bulldoze the Shadows -- a gorgeous 1920s mansion in Miami -- a resourceful young preservationist approaches the police department's Cold Case Squad. Years ago, the high-profile owner of the Shadows was murdered and the crime has remained unsolved. Never content to let a trail stay cold, Lt. K. C. Riley and her detectives visit the long-abandoned pioneer house and discover a heartbreaking new mystery. But the people tied to the Shadows are evasive and paranoid, haunted by lies, guilt, and tangled pasts. Only one thing is clear: the killer is still out there, and the old, cold case is hotter than ever. . . .

  • Cold murder case

From Publishers Weekly
Saving Shadows, a historic Miami waterfront estate that's about to be bulldozed—annoying preservationists and reopening a 45-year-old unsolved murder—isn't enough to rescue its novel namesake. Staying in familiar Miami territory, Buchanan brings back the crew from Cold Case Squad for this outing: Miami PD Sgt. Craig Burch and ragtag detectives Sam Stone, Pete Nazario and, this time, Joe Corso. Watched closely by their lieutenant and by the press, Burch and posse focus on the unsolved 1961 murder of Pierce Nolan, a legendary local scion and former mayor killed by a shotgun blast. With the help of Kiki Courtelis, an anxious preservationist, the team gains access to his long-shuttered estate—only to conveniently discover an antique trunk full of infant corpses. Subplots are forced: Nazario has instant feelings for Kiki; Stone spontaneously avenges the death of his parents; the workings of an illegal adoption ring comes to light. Retired journalist Buchanan (You Only Die Twice) is a longtime Miami resident who won a Pulitzer Prize for her police reporting, but this outing lacks her usual attention to plot and detail. And there's not enough emotional motivation for cozy fans or real estate porn for historic house junkies. (June)

From Booklist
Buchanan returns to the Miami specialized police unit she premiered in last year's Cold Case Squad. She returns also to the cop humor and interjected war stories that she has been known for since her newspaper days. (Sometimes, though, her set-pieces, delivered as monologues in too perfect a style, with no interruptions by the listeners, seem unrealistic.) On the second time around for the Cold Case detectives, a woman seeking to preserve Shadows, a historic Miami mansion, tells the detectives that the 1961 murder of the then-owner of the property, a former mayor of Miami, will never be solved if the manse is bulldozed. The cops agree to search the house, one of the few South Florida houses with a basement, and, in a winningly chilling scene, find a cache of mummified human infants. This horrific discovery leads from a cold case to an ongoing one. Fast, funny, and shocking--all the characteristics of vintage Buchanan. Connie Fletcher

A very good read!
By L. J. Roberts
Buchanan, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, has woven the past and the present into multi-layered story with interesting characters, excellent dialogue and very good suspense. I was involved from the first sentence and didn't put it down until I'd read the last. Buchanan is an author who deserves much more attention than she receives. Her books aren't bloody, brutal or depressing; they are human, captivating and always worth reading.

Interesting double-story novel
By Tina Myers
the first time reading this author for me, and what drew me to her is her pulitzer-prize winner status. Ms. Buchanan spent many years writing gritty crime stories for Miami newspapers, and her knowledge of the seedy underside of Miami is evident throughout this book. Her story is one of several that follow detectives in the Miami PD Cold Case Squad. Two separate stories are told in this book, one having to do with the murder of a young black couple in their barbecue restaurant, long believed to be a robbery gone bad. However, the couple's son, now grown up and a detective on this Cold Case Squad, has never believed his parents were simply unlucky victims, and small clues, overlooked initially, cause this case to explored again and ultimately solved. The second story features the imminent demolition of a historic Miami landmark, the Shadows, a mansion built by a notorious rumrunner in the 30s. The Cold Case Squad is brought into the story when they delve into the mysterious shooting death of the homeowner many years before, and, during the course of their search of the property, discover 7 dead infants in a trunk in the Shadows' cellar. Who are these babies? Were they somehow related to the murder of the homeowner? The stories are told simultaneously, and it's a little tricky sometimes to keep them straight - add to that a plethora of characters, and the confusion multiplies. Buchanan's writing style is more reporter-ish than author-ish, as well, which I found a little off-putting. However, both of these stories were very cleverly told, and the characters, despite being a big group, are well drawn and very funny. Recommended.

terrific police procedural
By A Customer
In Miami preservationist Kiki Courtelis visits the police department's Cold Case Squad to investigate the murder of 1950s city Mayor Pierce Nolan in front of his home in 1961. Kiki informs the cops that if they fail to act, the most famous unsolved case in the state will remain that way forever because developers have bulldozers ready to tear down Nolan's home the Shadows. She also admits that the Cold Case Squad is her last hope to save the elegant but abandoned 1920s style house from progress.

Sergeant Burch reluctantly leads his team on a search of the premises, but is stunned when they find a box containing the remains of seven babies that died four decades ago. DNA testing proves that Pierce sired none of the infants.

While much of the squad is morbidly fascinated with the infanticide, Police Officer Sam Stone works a more personal cold case, the murders of his parents in 1987. He is astonished to learn that the cop Ray Glover, who informed him and his grandmother that his parents were murdered, died not long afterward in an accident.

Mindful in positive ways of Ed McBain's 87th Precinct, the two prime subplot cases never intersect yet both grips the audience for differing reasons. Readers like most of the cold case squad and the city will be ghoulishly mesmerized by the murders of the former mayor and the babies; on the other hand the audience and the city will empathize with Sam's need for closure as his inquiries lead towards a conspiratorial cover-up by Miamians, but who and why appears just out of reach. Edna Buchanan writes a terrific police procedural.

Sonnet of the Sphinx: A Poetic Death Mystery (Poetic Death Mysteries), by Diana Killian

For one of Innisdale's residents, a priceless sonnet means poetic license to kill . . . . Grace Hollister's stay in England's picturesque Lake District has proven doubly fruitful -- the American literary scholar just sold her first book, and her romance with charming antiques dealer and ex-jewel thief Peter Fox has begun a new chapter. Sorting through a hoard of papers found in an old farmhouse, Grace and Peter discover an old letter that refers to a lost Shelley sonnet, "Sate the Sphinx" Before Grace can start tracking down this poetic treasure, though, Peter's shady past rears its head -- a particularly ugly head, belonging to a menacing Turk who's eager to see Peter dead. But there's plenty more trouble in store. Suddenly Grace and Peter are suspects in a murder investigation, and someone has tried his level best to kill her -- not once, but twice. The hieroglyphics are on the wall: unless Grace can unravel an inscrutable riddle and unearth the villain amid a cache of likely suspects, her story might be at an end . . . .

From Publishers Weekly
Following High Rhymes and Misdemeanors, this pleasant if tepid installment in the Poetic Death saga starring unlikely lovers Grace Hollister, a literature teacher, and former jewel thief Peter Fox, offers generous portions of murder and mayhem without losing the composure of a traditional cozy. On the same day that Grace finds a clue to a missing work by the famed Romantic poet Shelley, Peter, now an antiques dealer, is visited by blackmailer Hayri Kayaci, a man who helped Peter escape from a Turkish prison before he went straight. Kayaci is soon murdered, as is the town's mysterious new librarian. Detective Inspector Drummond, a recent transfer to remote Innisdale, is convinced that Grace is guilty despite several attempts on her life. Undeterred, Grace continues to probe historical records, old rumors and odd townspeople in search of the Shelley sonnet. Though involving, the murder mystery generates only mild suspense, as villain and victims are minimally developed. Instead, it is the appealing summertime setting of Britain's Lake District, the enigmatic relationship between Grace and Peter and the possibility of a second suitor that give the book its charm. Three's a charm!!
By Rebecca L. Myers
If three's a charm, then Diana Killian's third installment in the Poetic Death Series, Sonnet of the Sphinx, is just that.... A charm!

While sorting through some old books and papers at Rogue's Gallery, Grace stumbles upon an old love letter written in 1943 by a man named John Mallow. The letter hints of an unknown sonnet by poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. Realizing the significance of this find, Grace attempts to share her enthusiasm with Peter, who only wishes to tease and poke fun. During some light hearted banter between the two, a ghost from Peter's past enters the gallery and immediately the mood is changed. The mysterious stranger is Hayri Kayaci, a policeman from the Turkish prison where Peter had spent some time. He has come to claim something he feels Peter owes him and if he doesn't get it, he's going to extradite Peter back to Turkey. Grace fearing for Peter, tries to come up with a plan to help him but Peter assures her that it will be taken care of. A few days later, Kayaci turns up dead with Grace and Peter becoming the prime suspects. Thus begins this fast paced mystery, complete with shadowy figures in the night, some very amusing and colorful characters, death threats on Grace's life, cover ups, a relentless detective determined to pin the murder of Kayaci on Peter, some surprising discoveries, a little romance and an ending that will shock you! Sonnet of the Sphinx is jam packed with heart pounding action and nail biting suspense! Hang onto your book and get ready for the ride of your life!

The dialog is witty and fun. The events may seem far-fetched and out of the ordinary but if the book was ordinary, it wouldn't be worth reading. Ms. Killian is an accomplished story teller with a knack for wit and creativity when describing a feeling or situation. From the very first page of the prologue, Ms. Killian's descriptive style starts working its magic. Describing the storm that will soon claim Shelley's life, she writes, "The young man raked fingers through the golden hair that was perpetually in his eyes, then turned his attention once more to the book of Keats's poetry. The boat creaked, the sails whispering to each other. The storm that whipped up off the black-glass ocean was like an enchanted thing, so sudden, so parlous. The pages in the book flapped like chattering paper teeth." Explaining the thoughts running through Grace's head regarding the possibility of discovering an unknown work by Shelley, she states, "Grace's brain continued to spin sweet airy fantasy as though someone had left a cotton candy machine on overdrive." While detailing Grace's constant battle to fight the urge to pry into Peter's mysterious past, she says, "Peter's mysterious history acted upon her the way an unopened jigsaw tempted a puzzle addict."

The writer's descriptive style and imagination brings this book to life. It sparks our own imagination, inviting us into the story and encouraging us to experience it for ourselves. We become the unseen sidekick tagging along after Grace, helping to solve the mystery. We are sitting with her in the garden mulling over the events of the day before. Our senses come to life and we can smell the flower's sweet fragrance, hear the buzzing of the bees and feel the warmth of the sunlight on our face. We are the fly on the wall, listening to every conversation and witnessing the intimate moments between Grace and Peter. Our heart beats frantically as we feel our way through the darkness with Grace and Peter, trying desperately to elude the dark figure trying to kill us. For a brief moment we are transformed from our dull everyday life to an exciting adventure of intrigue and mystery. Ms. Killian has given us a wonderful gift. It is the opportunity to live out our own fancy through her book. When the last page is turned and the book closes and we are again back in the real world, there is a sadness and a yearning for another wonderfully exciting adventure and book four.

Sonnet of the Sphinx is a book that can stand on its own merits but should you want the full experience, my suggestion is to start at the beginning with the first two books of the Series, High Rhymes and Misdemeanors and Verse of the Vampyre. All are equally enjoyable and fun to read!

Ever since I read 'Verse of the Vampyre', with its tantalizing excerpt from 'Sonnet of the Sphinx', I've been waiting impatiently for the rest of the story. And not because I care overmuch about the possibility that there's a lost sonnet by Shelley floating around somewhere. Though I admit that treasure-hunting is fun, what I really wanted, was to know the details of the Istanbul-affair, the one that landed Grace's boyfriend Peter in a Turkish jail for fourteen months. After two books full of hints, I wanted answers, and I wanted them now!

The books starts with Grace finding an old letter mentioning the unknown Shelley sonnet. Hard on the heels of that, Harry, an acquaintance of Peter's from his stint in Turkey, shows up, and threatens to have Peter extradited. Then Harry turns up dead, and naturally, Peter is at the top of the suspect list. Grace is not safe from suspicion herself, however, after Scott Sartyn, the new head librarian, accuses her of going through the dead man's pockets. (No, she didn't. Really. And Sartyn shouldn't really be talking anyway, since he knew Harry from before and is trying to keep it quiet. With good reason.) While Peter is out of town, someone forces Grace's car off the road and into the lake, and then someone sets fire to her cottage. Then Scott Sartyn ends up dead. And woven through the whole intricate web is the mystery concerning the soldier who was in possession of the Shelley-sonnet back in 1943. What happened to him? Did he desert? Was he - and the sonnet - blown to smithereens by a bomb while on leave? Did he really run away with his girlfriend's sister, or was someone else to blame for his disappearance? And for that matter, is the sonnet still around somewhere, and can Grace and Peter find it?

I quite enjoyed both 'High Rhymes and Misdemeanors' and 'Verse of the Vampyre', but I think 'Sonnet of the Sphinx' beats them both, hands down. Grace and Peter's relationship moves forward by leaps and bounds; they seem more comfortable together now, than what they did in the previous book. The plot is nice and tight, with enough surprises to keep the reader reading long after she should turn out the light and go to sleep. And while I thought for a moment, at one point, "I wonder if this person had something to do with it...?", I'd forgotten all about it by the time I got to the end. And best of all, all my questions about Istanbul were answered, and enough loose ends left dangling to make for a few more books. My only gripe is that this time, there's no excerpt to whet my appetite for the next installment, when, surely, the cursed Serpent's Egg diamond will once again resurface, to tempt Peter off the straight and narrow...

Oh, no! Here we go again!

Literary Murder Strikes Again
By Mark Baker - Carstairs Considers
Rogue's Gallery has just bought a farmhouse full of antiques. While Grace and Peter are sorting through the items, Grace stumbles on a letter referring to a previously undiscovered sonnet by Percy Shelley. Naturally, this peaks Grace's interest. Unfortunately, the letter was written during World War II, and the writer disappeared right after writing it. Further complicating the search, the antiques' owner demands them back because he didn't intend to sell them.

As if that weren't enough, Peter's past comes walking right into Rogue's Gallery. Hayri Kayaci was a guard in the Turkish prison where Peter spent some time. Now he's back, demanding an item Peter doesn't know how to locate and threatening to use the extradition papers he brought with him if Peter doesn't cooperate.

When Hayri is found murdered after a concert at the local park, Grace's relief for Peter is short lived. They are the top suspects in the case, and the new inspector in the village won't leave them alone. Meanwhile, Grace is hot on the trail of the missing sonnet, or at least piecing together the life of the man who discovered it sixty years before. If she can just figure out who is trying to kill her, life could be perfect.

Fans of the series will enjoy the latest entry. This story has several different mysteries tangled together, the sonnet, the murder, and the letter writer's disappearance. We even get a little more about Peter's past. The story is ultimately satisfying, but the pace is slightly off, slowing down at times in the middle. Overall, this is a minor complaint.

The characters continue to grow. The cautious, predictable Grace of book one is gone, and there are several times she does things I wouldn't have expected her to do, yet perfectly fit who she is becoming. On the other hand, Peter is becoming more cautious about life. These two are great for each other, and it's fun watching their relationship continue to evolve and grow.

Several characters from the previous entries make appearances, and new characters grace the page. They are all sharply drawn and memorable.

One of the charms of the book is the setting. I hadn't heard of the Lake District in England before starting this series, but Diana Killian makes the area come to life. Despite the murders, she makes it so inviting I would love to visit it some day.

If you enjoy the Romantic poets, this is a series not to be missed. Don't let the subject turn you away, however. These are great tales that will appeal to anyone.

Fills in some blanks
By Robert R. Pokorny Jr.
The way this book was written reminded me of the style of the movie Godfather 2. It jumped from the "current story" which takes place about a year before the movie to 1200 AD when everything got started over and over.

With Selene's face on the cover and the opening chapter focusing on her, I was more than surprised to find that the lionshare of the book is Lucian's story. But it fills in some of the blanks like Soren's role, where Kraven shows up, and all about Viktor's daughter Sonja.

The book is 310 pages so I don't think they could've done more history this time around, however the way this is written I have a feeling that they plan on writing many more fun books filling in more blanks and providing more details on what happened during the vampire - lycan war.

If you liked the movie, read this book. It's compelling and kept me turning the pages. I would also HIGHLY recommend you read the novelization of the movie BEFORE reading Blood Enemy. I really liked the way this prequel jibes with the original.

Cox did the job well. I hope to see more, hopefully before the next movie.

Blood Enemy ( Underworld, Book 2)
As a senior citizen there are not many vampire or si-fi I have not read. I do admit to being a novice at reviews as I spend most of the time reading or writing for myself. Mouser I hate to worry you but I could not state your were any more wrong about Greg Cox's writing.. I was glued to this book from start to finish and that is a rarity for me, I usually read 3 or 4 books at the same time. I can only pray that if they make this movie they use the same Lucian they used in movie 1.

This is Lucian and Sonja's love story and very well written I might add. Cox hops from now to then but I must admit he is very good at it.. My favorite instructor told me once before you can break the rules you have to know the rules. Cox has them down pat, I only hope we have another sequel.

Great plot, bad writing
By Mouser
This one was hard to rate because the story rocked but the writing sucked. Sorry, but please don't jump down my throat. I LOVE Underworld and like I said the story ROCKED but I wish they'd get a new writer.

Selene is watching the lycans and an arms dealer when she is mysteriously attacked by someone killing her vamp partner and two lycans. Before she can investigate, we are thrown back in time...

Lucian was born a werewolf (lycan) and as a baby was enslaved by Viktor, a vamp elder. He has grown up thinking he is better than the rest of the "dirty beasts" and madly in love with Viktor's daughter, princess Sonja.

When he saves her from an ambush they are alone and start to admit their feelings.

However, Sonja is soon engaged to an odious vampire prince and in desperation seeks Lucian out. The affair begins and soon enough they are pregnant and marry themselves in a secret ceremony. They plan to escape but are betrayed by a lycan bitch who wants Lucian for herself.

As punishment Sonja is burned alive and Lucian is whipped but escapes. Enraged he seeks out wild lycans and forms an army, capturing the vamps' silver mine. However the vamps regroup and slaughter his forces, making him retreat and laying the seeds of a much greater lycan army, that battle should be told in "Underworld: Evolution".

Back in the present Selene kicks butt, takes names, and discovers who is trying to kill the lycans and vamps alike. In the process she almost discovers a secret plot...

Great plot but HORRID writing. Try this on for size: "the catapults rumbled down the road with the force of...well, catapults". It's paraphrasing, but I mean, yeech!

Only for the most rabid Underworld fans and please take an Excedrin before you read and spread it over a few days.

Two Little Girls in Blue: A Novel, by Mary Higgins Clark

In this riveting thriller from Queen of Suspense and #1 New York Times bestselling writer Mary Higgins Clark brilliantly weaves the mystery of twin telepathy into a mother’s search for a kidnapped child, presumed dead.

When Margaret and Steve Frawley come home to Connecticut from a black-tie dinner in New York, their three-year-old twins, Kathy and Kelly, are gone. The police found the babysitter unconscious, and a ransom note from the “Pied Piper” demands eight million dollars. Steve’s global investment firm puts up the money, but when they go to retrieve the twins, only Kelly is in the car. The dead driver’s suicide note says he inadvertently killed Kathy.

At the memorial, Kelly tugs Margaret’s arm and says: “Mommy, Kathy is very scared of that lady. She wants to come home right now.” At first, only Margaret believes that the twins are communicating and that Kathy is still alive. But as Kelly’s warnings become increasingly specific and alarming, FBI agents set out on a desperate search.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Bestseller Clark is at her best when writing of crime against children, as shown in this chilling tale of kidnapping, murder and telepathy. Before leaving for a black-tie affair in New York City, Margaret and Steve Frawley celebrate the third birthday of their twin girls, Kathy and Kelly, with a party at their new home in Ridgefield, Conn. Later that night, when Margaret can't reach the babysitter, she contacts the Ridgefield police. The frantic couple return home to find the children missing and a ransom note demanding $8 million. Though the Frawleys meet all the conditions, only Kelly turns up in a car along with a dead driver and a suicide note saying that Kathy has died. But Kelly's telepathic messages from her sister keep telling her differently, and Margaret won't give up hope. Even the most skeptical law enforcement officers and the FBI, who pursue suspects from New York to Cape Cod, begin to believe Kelly is on to something. Clues from ordinary people lead to a riveting conclusion. Rivaling Clark's debut—Where Are the Children?—this suspense thriller is certain to send terror into the heart of any parent. (Apr.)

From Booklist
Clark's thirty-third book revisits the subject matter of her first (Where Are the Children? 1975), addressing every parent's worst nightmare, the abduction of children. Steve and Margaret Frawley return to their new house after a night out on the town to discover that their three-year-old twins, Kelly and Kathy, have been kidnapped. The kidnappers are demanding an $8 million ransom. As the executives at the company where Steve works debate paying the ransom, the three kidnappers, Lucas, Clint, and Clint's unstable girlfriend, Angie, wait for instructions from the plot's mastermind, who identifies himself only as the Pied Piper. Steve's company agrees to pay the ransom, but the Pied Piper's plan goes awry when Angie decides she wants to keep Kathy and shoots Lucas, leaving a fake suicide note claiming he accidentally killed Kathy. Although she is grateful to be reunited with Kelly, Margaret can't accept the loss of Kathy and clings to Kelly's assertion that she is in psychic communication with her twin. Clark's latest novel lacks the nail-biting suspense of some of her previous ones, but given how the subject matter dovetails with that of her first popular novel, expect interest. Kristine Huntley

Very depressing, the story goes on and on how this one person gets abused, misused, beat up. Starts with the Mother from age 3 to age 12? continuous non-stop, blow by blow abuse, chapter after chapter. Then she gets abused, misused beat up again by boyfriend. I got tired of all the abuse. The ending was pretty much what I expected she finally meets someone who appreciates her.

Ross's latest, the second in a trilogy begun with the far stronger Out of the Mist, follows famous country singer Lark Stewart through perils worthy of the silent screen's Pauline. They begin when Lark's longtime bandmate Danny Murphy is shot in New Orleans. Briefly suspected of the crime, Lark is then released, but not before a sadist who has stalked her escapes from jail. Her family sends her girlhood sweetheart, Lucas McCloud, to protect her. A onetime sniper and FBI agent turned furniture maker, Lucas's lifelong love for Lark—derailed first by teenage folly and later by his dangerous work—has never died. Though their return to their birthplace in the Smokies re-ignites their romance, Lark remains under threat from the stalker, a scheming ex-husband and Danny's still-unidentified attacker. In place of the colorful history and family humor found in Ross's previous installment, this book offers a jumble of overcomplicated backstory, inconsequential characters and melodramatic plot twists, including a temporary and unlikely bout of amnesia and a plane crash. Crowded with contrivance, the story never finds either its rhythm or its heart; to the end, Lark and Lucas remain puppets of the frantic plot rather than compelling characters in and of themselves.

From Booklist
Desert Storm vet Lucas McCloud, ex-lover of internationally renowned folk singer Lark Stewart, is brought out of FBI retirement by her aunt, who senses trouble for Lark in the form of a stalker. Lucas discovers that his passion for Lark has never ceased, nor hers for him, and Ross concentrates on describing how they rediscover each other both psychologically and sexually, and endure the tearful exorcism of their respective demons. Lucas blames himself for the death of a teenage girl hostage he tried to save, and Lark has to get past her fears of flying and of the dark. All the torment, suspense, and good sex Ross whips up obscures the fact that this is a sequel to Out of the Mist [BKL O 15 03], and that Lark is the second of the three Stewart sisters who were raised in Stewart's Folly in Tennessee. Late in the book Ross plays catch-up, which slows things down, but doesn't ruin the suspense because the reader is already rooting for Lark and Lucas. Mary K. Chelton

Fans will enjoy this second chance at love thriller
By A Customer
In New Orleans, someone shoots band member Danny Murphy when he and lead singer Lark Stewart were going to a club. As Danny nears death, Lark's Aunt Zelda calls former FBI sharpshooter Lucas McCloud from the middle of nowhere to tell him Lark is in danger and needs his help. Used to hearing the witchery of Zelda, Luke travels from their hometown of Highland Falls, North Carolina to protect the woman he loves, but left behind years ago.
Lark realizes that she still loves Luke and would prefer he not be here, but heeds his advice especially when he mentions that her stalker Dr. William Quest escaped jail. The assumption made by Luke and the police is that Quest saw Lark with her close friend Danny so he tried to kill him as the deranged man believes that the singer is his wife. As Luke protects Lark from the psychopath Quest and from her angry ex husband Cody, their love blossoms. However, she expects he will leave once she is safe and so fears giving him her heart again.
Though the final twist may seem OUT OF THE BLUE, readers will enjoy this second chance at love romantic suspense thriller. The story line is action-packed but driven by Lark who courageously contends in differing ways with the five men impacting her life. Fans will appreciate the middle book of the Stewart sisters' trilogy (see OUT OF THE MIST for the first novel).

What happened to the end?
By mahikahn
Lark Stewart is a singer with a burgeoning career. Until someone tries to kill her in New Orleans and shoots one of her band members instead. A bodyguard arrives in the form of former FBI agent Lucas McCloud who happens to be her first love.
Lark & Luke had never really stopped loving each other through all the years. It was reassuring that Luke was able to admit this to himself early on. Their interaction was great as were their feelings for each other.

However, there were a few things that bothered me: Luke never really gave Lark solid reasons for deserting her, twice. Not to minimize his military service but, the constant references to Luke going "off to war to liberate a nation" was a bit over the top. A little interaction with Ian and Lilly, the two main characters from the previous book could have easily been included and still kept this as a stand alone story
Still, I had this book pegged for a five. Until the last 20 or so pages which was when the book fell flat. The resolution of the pivotal secondary characters was wrapped up in a total of about 6 pages, with no real explanation of the motives that drove them. One minute the two of them were there, the next gone and forgotten. But the kicker was Lucas and Lark's relationship winding up in, not kidding here, one page! I kept checking to see if some pages had been left out of my copy!
Fortunately though, my dissatisfaction WAS in the very end of the book which won't stop me from reading the last in the trilogy "Out of the Storm".

It was written in such a disjointed manner that it really lacked the impact it could have had. The main characters have great potential but the story just didn't hold together. My biggest problem was that the background on the main characters and the dastardly villian who is after them was so poorly described that I found myself saying, "WHAT? Wait a minute, that doesn't make sense." I quickly found myself losing interest in these people when I couldn't even understand their history. Other annoying moments included when one character mentions, " so and so just told me . . . " but,you guessed it, the story never indicated that conversation had happened! A convincing and enjoyable story is all in the details for me. This writer needs a better editor.

A Midsummer Night's Dream (Folger Shakespeare Library), by William Shakespeare

In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare stages the workings of love. Theseus and Hippolyta, about to marry, are figures from mythology. In the woods outside Theseus’s Athens, two young men and two young women sort themselves out into couples—but not before they form first one love triangle, and then another.

Also in the woods, the king and queen of fairyland, Oberon and Titania, battle over custody of an orphan boy; Oberon uses magic to make Titania fall in love with a weaver named Bottom, whose head is temporarily transformed into that of a donkey by a hobgoblin or “puck,” Robin Goodfellow. Finally, Bottom and his companions ineptly stage the tragedy of “Pyramus and Thisbe.”

Review
Praise for William Shakespeare: Complete Works:“A feast of literary and historical information.” -The Wall Street Journal

From the Publisher
This book is perfect for AP classes and is often selected for inclusion on the AP exam. The notes, reading pointers, and vocabulary in this addition will also help students at a lower reading level get the most out of these classics.

From the Inside Flap
Magic, love spells, and an enchanted wood provide the materials for one of Shakespeare's most delightful comedies. When four young lovers, fleeing the Athenian law and their own mismatched rivalries, take to the forest of Athens, their lives become entangled with a feud between the King and Queen of the Fairies. Some Athenian tradesmen, rehearsing a play for the forthcoming wedding of Duke Theseus and his bride, Hippolyta, unintentionally add to the hilarity. The result is a marvelous mix-up of desire and enchantment, merriment and farce, all touched by Shakespeare's inimitable vision of the intriguing relationship between art and life, dreams and the waking world.
Each Edition Includes:
- Comprehensive explanatory notes
- Vivid introductions and the most up-to-date scholarship
- Clear, modernized spelling and punctuation, enabling contemporary readers to understand the Elizabethan English
- Completely updated, detailed bibliographies and performance histories
- An interpretive essay on film adaptations of the play, along with an extensive filmography

A truly classic comedy of mistaken identity, mixed romance, and magical elements, Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream stands the test of time as a truly funny comedy. Though some of the pronunciations of words have caused Will's rhymes to have faded over time, the meter and rhyme you can see throughout the play tie the worlds of the faeries and mortals thematically together in interesting ways. Good for a fun read and a deep analytical dive.

The publisher of this book includes bogus titles and objectionable content on the title page. Clearly creative titles such as "Cursing ABC Coloring Book" and "How I Stole 5.6 Million from Walmart", there is also another bogus title with swear words. While not a prude, my wife ordered for one of her students and the title page was pointed out by his parent...
