About the Author
Richard Cole was the tour manager for Led Zeppelin for twelve years. He has also travelled with artists including Black Sabbath, The Who, Eric Clapton and Ozzy Osbourne. He divides his time between Venice, California, and London. Richard Trubo has authored and coauthored more than a dozen on rock music. He lives in Southern California.

About the Author
Benjamin Spock, M.D., practiced pediatrics in New York City from 1933 to 1947. He then became a medical teacher and researcher at the Mayo Clinic, the University of Pittsburgh, and Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. The author of eleven books, he was a political activist for causes that vitally affect children: disarmament, day care, schooling, housing, and medical care for all. He had two sons, a stepdaughter, and four grandchildren. Dr. Spock, who died March 15, 1998, at age ninety-four, was married to Mary Morgan. Dr. Spock's Baby and Child Care has been translated into thirty-nine languages and has sold fifty million copies worldwide since its first publication in 1946.

Dr. Robert Needlman grew up in Chicago, attending the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, where his mother was a preschool teacher. He graduated from Yale University with a BA in English Literature and earned his MD from Yale Medical School. He trained in General Pediatrics and Developmental and Behavioral  Pediatrics at Boston City Hospital, where he led the development of Reach Out and Read, a project to promote reading aloud.  ROR programs now help millions of children to grow up loving books (learn more at www.reachoutandread.org).   In addition to being the revising co-author of Dr. Spock’s Baby and Child Care, 8th and 9th editions, he is the author of Dr. Spock’s Baby Basics and writes for Drspock.com.  Dr. Needlman practices and teaches Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland and is Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.  He lives in Cleveland with his wife, Carol Farver, a surgical pathologist and educator. Their daughter, Grace, is a graduate of Yale University, where she majored in Art.

Essential Guide!

This book has the most common sense approach to parenting I have seen to date. Very much an advocate of trusting your own instincts, he allows parents to be comfortable with their decisions.

A great reference guide, quick answers to a lot of those questions that new parents have... even the ones that they don't know they have, and the ones they don't want to admit that they have.

I highly recommend this book!

So, my son is 4 now, and my dog-eared copy of Dr. Spock's Baby and Child Care still has a place of prominence on my bookshelf.
This book helped me get through a couple of awful colds. It helped me figure out childproofing. Struggles with toilet training (best advice ever- stop struggling!), dinner-time (same advice! :-) ) So many little (and big) questions were answered with this book.

I could research things in the book, prior to taking my son for his well-baby checkups.

I'm a single mom with a really supportive family - that lives a thousand miles away. Dr. Spock helped fill the gaps. It's not a bible, it's not infallible- I don't completely agree, but I don't completely agree with my mother either!

I just can't recommend this book enough.

My son is now a 7 year old second grader. And we're a part of a blended family.

I've just pulled my extremely well used copy of Dr. Spock's Baby and Child care off my shelf again and find myself looking to it for help.
I think I'll need to buy another copy, as mine is dog eared to the point of falling apart- through no fault of the book, just from constant use.

If I could convince everyone to buy just one book to help them raise a child- this would be it.

What to do about lying, once a child tries it? What to do about bullies, when they're encountered in school? Should I call the doctor about that rash? My child suddenly developed some new, and strange fears - what should I do?
These are all questions that I turned to Dr. Spock for. And all things that Dr. Spock helped me with.

Still the best child care book in the world. I bought it for my granddaughter to use for my great grand. When I purchased it over 50 years ago, it was my baby bible. There is nothing Dr. Spock does not cover. Outstanding.

Conservative, Informative, and Practical

I am an attorney, not a pediatrician nor psychiatrist. When my wife and I were expecting our first child three years ago, we recognized our lack of experience and our need of reference material on how to raise a child. Advice from the Grandparents, while well-intentioned, needed to be "double-checked" for accuracy. This book was in our first order of "how to"s.
The topics are broken down in numerical paragraphs, and are often very concise. This works well for us, when we get the crazy idea that our child may have some rare disease or condition, or that he isn't developing on schedule (at least, not according family members). We can then get a brief bit of insight, usually enough to reassure us.
The advice is conservative, informative, and practical. As with any suggestions, you may wish to compare it to what is being told to you by your pediatrician, the Grandparents, and other sources. We found this to be a good reference, and return to it when needed. It is the second best one we have, after the American Academy of Pediatrics guide from birth to age five (also a "must have").
I would recommend this text as a nice supplemental reference.

PERHAPS NOT "ALL YOU NEED," BUT STILL A HELPFUL SUMMARY WORK

John Lust is also the author of The Herb Book: The Complete and Authoritative Guide to More Than 500 Herbs, and Michael Tierra is also the author of The Way of Herbs: Fully Updated with the Latest Developments in Herbal Science and Planetary Herbology.

Lust wrote in the Preface to this 1990 book, "From the time 'The Herb Book' was published, I wanted to write its companion book---a reference book about herbal remedies, organized according to ailments. Here in the 'Natural Remedy Bible' you will find information about common illnesses and their natural treatments, as well as various combinations of herbal preparations and methods of applying them. The emphasis is on the use of herbs..."

this is a very useful book!

I've had this book for 11 years and refer to it often for suggestions on what natural remedies to try for different health issues. If there is an updated version I would recommend it but this one is still relevant if no update is available. It has remedies for everything you can come down with!

Some Good some so so

For the everyday person looking for information to assit with a self treatment ailment, this book lacks a lot. There are tons of books out there that really focus on remedies in a length of treating the body as a whole. As an herbalist we treat the body as a whole, not just the symptoms since we know that the symptom is coming from somewhere, there is a root to it. This book just points out an ailment, offers some of this and some of that, then you become confused and don't know what to do. It names many herbs and how they are used but it leaves out the most important part. That part is Primary Properties, Secondary (camirative) and Catalysis. These three should be together in any treatment using natural remedies. It tells you what to use, but doesn't tell you why, so you are left wondering how it is that this is the solution. I would not recommend this book unless you are a knowledable herbalist and at that, I still wouldn't recommend it because chances are you already know better than to leave it hanging out there for the wonderment of it all. Not a good choice, there are no instanst fixes to these type ailments and that goes for Herbal medicine too.

Susan Torres, a tough military cop, work closely with Sammy, a Korean police detective who has learned most of his English from American action movies. They believe that American and Korean officials want the case solved, but there's a stink of cover-up and conspiracy after all, who really cares about another dead bar girl? Even Ray lies through his teeth, and it takes a while for Burt to realize he's been had. The truth is, nobody wants the murder solved, and Burt is just an expendable patsy in a game of geopolitics where saving face and promoting business are most important. Davis (The Colonel) combines convincing police procedure with plenty of head-scratching clues, twists and dead ends. His portrayal of South Korean culture is vivid and revealing, a superb backdrop for a bona fide thriller.

Davis' fourth thriller set in the world of the military--following The Colonel (2001)--is, as usual, a crafty, detail-rich mystery with plenty of atmosphere. His latest, set in South Korea, stars Major Burton Webber, an air force investigator who resigned his commission to go to work in his Korean wife's jewelry store. When he reluctantly agrees to take on a particularly delicate investigation--someone has murdered a beautiful woman who may have high-level connections--he's forced to put his own life on the line. The plot is fairly traditional, but Davis works enough variations on the theme to make it seem fresh again. His deft characterizations (he can tell us a lot about someone in very few words) keep us engaged, and his smooth storytelling allows him to keep crucial details secret until they sneak up on us and whack us over the head. Davis (a former major in the air force) has yet to write a "great" military thriller, but he's pushing "very good" to its limit. David Pitt

Another Winner From Patrick Davis

Major Burton Webber resigned from the military when he was passed over for promotion because he married a Korean woman. He had been in charge of the OSI office at a military base in South Korea. His former commanding officer wanted him back to be in charge of the investigation of a politically sensitive murder of a beautiful bar dancer. Plenty of intrigue and excitement as he weaves his way thru the complex plot. The reader wonders right up till the dramatic ending who the killer was. Very interesting also was the lesson in Korean culture. Really a superb page turner.

The Commander was an excellent read. Not very many books are written in a first-person format, but it is a great way to write. The story is first-rate, with compelling, believable characters.

In Command of His Story

Justice, racism and family honor all play key roles in this intriguing mystery by Patrick Davis. The author returns again in his fourth book to his military experiences. Much like the other three, this novel features constant action, intriguing and complicated characters and a mystery full of twists and turns to the very last page.
As the novel opens, Major Burton Webber is no longer a member of the Air Force and is content to help his Korean wife run her jewelry store. At one time he was Chief of the Osan Air Base (South Korea) office of Special Investigations. But office politics runs everything, especially the military, and he was wrongfully passed over for promotion. Now the Air Force wants him back ostensibly because he is the best at what he does.
The Air Force has a politically sensitive problem in a region that now wants Americans to pull out of their bases and go home. An Amerasian bar girl (prostitute) has been brutally murdered and it may have been at the hands of an American service person. If true, it comes on the heels of other recent events in the region and could be the final push for the Americans to go home. Supposedly, General Muller (responsible for the pass over in promotion) wants Webber to come in and investigate the case and find the guilty party and wrap everything up as fast as possible.
While Webber does not buy into the situation as described, it is a chance for him to do what he really likes to do and so he agrees. Webber begins to run the investigation and isn't surprised when the investigation begins to run into political roadblocks. As everyone around him seems to lie to him, he continues to work the case and begins to find the clues that will lead him to the killers. His problem is that as his suspect list shortens, the clues seem to be leading him toward those closest to him.
As in his other books, Patrick Davis once again writes another tightly plotted mystery. The action flows steadily throughout the novel and the reader is constantly misdirected as the investigation proceeds forward. His characters are complex and human and he shows a real talent for bringing the reader into his world. Simply put: another great read.

One of the funniest books I've ever read!

I have read several funny books in my life, and this is definately one of them. It's got several funny lists in it like 'How To Survive A School Dance' and 'How To Avoid Getting Lost In Your House.' The best ones are the ones made by Patrick. Although I must admit that some of the lists were kind of pointless, but there weren't much of those.

a blast from the past !!!!!

i just had a bit of nostalgia and remembered this book. I got it when i was in elemantary school and i would read it over and over again. I would read it too my little brother to and he got a kick out of it. This book was so funny and soo good that now at 20 and in college i'm going to repurchase it and read it all over again. truly a hidden gem of childrens books :)

About the Author
Lawson was a native of California. He joined the Army Air Corps while working for Douglas Aircraft Company in Santa Monica and received his wings in November 1940. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, he volunteered for a secret mission that evolved into the raid on Tokyo in April 1942. After retiring from military service in 1945, he reentered private industry and worked on several projects that involved aircraft and space programs.

Peter Mersky worked in the Washington, DC area as an artist for a government agency for 13 years. He then moved to Norfolk, VA, and worked as assistant editor and editor of "Approach", the Navy and Marine Corps aviation safety magazine, for 16 years. He has been the book review editor for "Naval Aviation News", the Navy's oldest periodical, since 1982, having reviewed more than 700 books in his regular column. His reviews also appear regularly in "The Hook, Wings of Gold", and several commercial magazines.

A Really Great First Person Account

This is a great first person account by an actual member of the famous "Doolittle Raid". The book is written by Captain Lawson, a pilot. The book reads as a memoir that is not written by a professional author. The book can be read and appreciated by a wide range of readers.

I cannot overstate how much I appreciate this book, Captain Lawson, and these other individuals. I will not risk being a "spoiler". America has never been a perfect country, including now. And the modern civil rights movement had not kicked into gear as of the onset of World War II. But there are a lot of reasons to be proud of, and thankful to, the "greatest generation". If you are looking for another reason, read this book. Thank You...

A extraordinary air raid of World War two :the making of 80 heroes

An outstanding account of the dare devil raid over JAPAN ,by eigthy very brave men ,which took the mighty Japanese Empire by complete surprise,and led the Japanese Army/Navy Supreme Command to initiate the "Combined Force " attack on MIDWAY ,which
was specifically designed to annihilate the US air carrier power ,which had dared to get that close enough of the JAPANESE main islands and launch 16 B 25 Bombers. ,just to show to the JAPANESE that the USA was not done yet ,afer the disaster of PEARL HARBOR .We know now the outcome :the four best Japanese "flat tops " were all sunk ,a major setback for the Proud and Arrogant JAPANESE FLEET .
This book tells also the terrible sufferings and the ordeal of Captain TED LAWSON ,who had to have a leg amputated after the crash of his B 25 ,and the courageous fight of the CHINESE people and guerilleros to save the B 25 crew from the raging Japanese Army then occupying CHINA .This should be remembered today when the PRC (CHINA ) is at odds with the USA ..

Deserving of a Place in History

Very good. It definitely has a place in history so that people in the future will know the REAL story from someone who was THERE, rather than the rewritten history we seem to hear more and more of.

The ordeals which some members of the crew of The Ruptured Duck B-25 underwent due to severe injuries, is a testament to the human spirit. I was also amazed by the way the ordinary Chinese people (I got a real kick out of the guy they called 'Johnny Beep-beep'), and later, the missionaries, helped our aircrews out in spite of the threat of death from occupying Japanese troops. This was, of course, pre-Mao, but the threat from the occupying Japanese was every bit as great. Their courage should be honored as well, and deserves to be a part of that history, also.
