A Timely Story of International Terrorism
By Larry Bryan
War Plan Red is another fast-paced and well-written thriller by author Peter Sasgen. It has all the ingredients one would expect in an exciting and suspenseful mystery of murder and intrigue.

In WPR, Sasgen explores the idea of what Russian rebel Chechen terrorists might do in the extreme, if they were able to commandeer a Russian nuclear submarine and turn it on their own country. I thought the story, although published in 2004, was very timely today in light of world events, where the world is increasingly facing the proliferation of nuclear weapons, and the possibility of a nuclear terrorist threat with world-wide consequences.

WPR serves as a reminder, that the USA is not the only country where terrorists want to destroy the government and cause death and destruction on civilian populations. WPR is set against the continuing conflict between Russia and America, the forever non-ending political theater and threats of terrorism, and the need for our two countries to put aside differences and work together for the safety and security of world peace. It illustrates the importance of overcoming the suspicion and fear that still exists between Russia and the USA, and it reminds us that in these types of situations, cool heads, reason, and common sense must prevail for the good of mankind.

I won’t attempt to write a synopsis of WPR, because the reader does not need another overview. I will say that this is the 7th book that I’ve read by Peter Sasgen, and there is a reason that I keep reading them.

If you are familiar with other Peter Sasgen books, you know that he writes books steeped in mystery and suspense, thrillers, that take the reader on an exciting, often tense, fast-paced journey. Sasgen, whose father served aboard the USS Rasher is an expert on submarines; he has written both fiction and nonfiction involving the submarine genre. Sasgen’s background gives him a unique ability in this arena, where he provides readers the “experience of being there”; living the moment inside a wartime or cold war submarine mission. All of Sasgen’s books are well researched and the reader can easily relate to the place and time of events.

Other books that I have read by Sasgen include: The Last U-boat; Red Shark; Hellcats; In Deadly Waters, Red Scorpion – The War Patrols of the USS Rasher, and Stalking the Red Bear. These books are available on Amazon and synopsis and reviews are available for all.

I have also read Peter Sasgen’s two newest books: “The Days of Killing – a Novel of Berlin” and “The Blood of Lost Empires: A Novel of the New Cold War”.
Both were well-written, fast-paced thrillers in the usual Sasgen style and well worth the time to explore. They are both on Amazon and I have written more detailed reviews of each of them. If you are looking for two new and exciting books to read, check them out!

Gripping, Fast Paced, AND Well Written!
By Joanna E. Taylor
This is a gritty, gripping, fast paced book - I found it impossible to put down! The setting is post cold war and effectively captures the scenario of rebel terrorists gaining control of a nuclear submarine. The book is rich in detail, demonstrating real knowledge of submarine operations as well as accurately depicting the politics and physical environment. The writing is superb; description never slows down the pace and the characters are multi-dimensional. I particularly appreciated that even the "bad guys" were fully developed human characters - nothing cardboard or plastic here!

This is an engaging, fast paced, and intriguingly plotted adventure story. The author knows his subject and his setting; the details he includes add to the suspense without ever slowing down the plot. The book is well written. You won't be able to put this one down!
