This is what a 3 star book is all about.

This is the first book I've read by Linda Fairstein and it will certainly not be the last. 'DEATH DANCE' was enjoyable and moved at a good pace. There were no points at all where I thought the story was dragging. There were some really obnoxious characters and in some cases I was wondering if anyone would actually talk to a police detective that way. There seemed to be lots of people with virtually no respect for the investigators. The detectives, however, were very likable and none of them seemed to be wrapped up in their own problems. Okay, there was the mourning for a deceased wife, Val, but this was never an issue when on duty. Good detectives. And of course, there was Alex Cooper, the prosecuting attorney in the special victims unit. It was nice to have a main character who was not being tortured by the ghosts of the past. You have to like her. The wrap up to the 3 crimes that were on Alex Cooper's caseload all came at once and 2 of them just out of no where. I guess once the main subject of the investigation was done, the author just had to close out the other two. One thing I did have a problem with though was the way the District Attorney just handed a homicde case to a prosecutor in another division. There was a big point made of how the head of the homicide prosecution unit would react to this but then nothing was even mentioned. Not a word. What happened to the guy whose territory was being invaded? Oh well. Anyway, I've read other reviews of other books by Linda Fairstein. It seems that maybe this is not her best effort. This is a good, quick read that won't make you feel cheated, but probably won't be one you will count as one of your all time favorites. 'DEATH DANCE' is what a 3 star book is all about. I would say that if this is her worst effort, then Linda Fairstein is a very good writer. I am anxious to read more in this Alex Cooper series.

Fairstein keeps entertaining

Linda Fairstein is an elegant figure - she brings a part of herself to Alexandra Cooper, Assistant DA - She and her friends Mike Chapman and Mercer Wallace from the police not only show us what goes on on their side of the world professionally, but show the reality of their own worlds - This outing shows the theatre and ballet aspect of the New York scene and the research put into this book is wonderful. After playing with sexual tension of Alex and Mike in previous works, they go to the old dynamic of the chemistry of the the friends working together and what their friendship (of all 3 friends) brings to the table.

Not those Ottoman niceties again!

Not those bl...y Ottoman niceties again! Says the Turkish inspector's Irish wife during an argument.

This is an English crime novel playing in Turkey, part of a substantial series already, with a group of Istanbul cops in the center.
Unfortunately I jumped into the middle of the series by picking up a paper copy of this volume.
What I like about this volume: two parallel cases in Istanbul (a violent stalker of gay men) and Cappadocia (an old case, or rather mystery, reactivated by the finding of the mummified victim) work generally well and credibly. Suspense in these cases is less attractive than the interesting cultural and psychological constellations. The cops of the story are complex characters in a multicultural setting: the metropolis and the rural 'wilderness', Muslims, strict and lax, minorities like Jews, Greeks, Armenians. And the tourists, some of them sex tourists.
Suspense is heightened by a terrorist attack in Istanbul. That rocks the rather placid investigations a lot.
The author is not an outstanding stylist (as in: 'Süleyman felt a cold shudder snake down his spine'), nor am I always convinced that her jumps between locations are to the best of her storytelling, but the book remains interesting enough until near the end.
It concludes with a ridiculous Poirot style ending, where the inspector gathers all possible suspects. Too funny to be serious, not funny enough to save the book.
As a general observation: the author doesn't know when and how to end. This keeps dragging on and on...
Maybe I will still give the series another chance.

Chapter One: A Day in the Life of My Great Brit Book Tour [plus a fabulous chocolate cake recipe]

I should have known that when a certain airline, which will go nameless (clue: one that carries the name of a Madonna pop hit), promises a bassinette for an overseas flight, they guarantee not a bassinette but a shoe box lined in the finest felt from the finest bottom of some poor soul's finest shoe; we were in Big Trouble. When my husband Jim put our daughter Esme into the bassinette, it was like watching a park ranger attempt to stuff a squirrel into a matchbox. The baby howled and wailed so loudly, she frightened the passengers in rows A through J, as the rest of the plane, K through M, just looked at us with hatred. Perhaps our ten-month-old American baby was just too tall, or maybe the bassinette was just too small, but whatever the issue, the baby was determined not to spend ten seconds in her plush (the airline's word, not mine) accommodations.

We had no recourse except to hold the sweet pea in our laps. That's when we learned our baby did not like to be held for longer than fifteen-minute intervals. We began to take volunteers for the hold-her-so-she-won't-cry shift at twenty American dollars per hour. We had three takers, one Texas granny who wouldn't take the money, an American teenager with pierced eyebrows who would, and a British nanny who wanted double. We paid the lovely Miss Havisham (name changed to protect the terse and crabby) her double.

When our daughter decided she was done exhausting her father, she snuggled into his shoulder and went to sleep. Soon my husband was snoring as was Miss Havisham and the bulk of passengers who were not glued to Notting Hill as it played on the turkey-platter-sized screen in the bulkhead. The screen was so small that it was a rare thing to see all of Julia Roberts's hair in one shot. Good thing the movie watchers were wearing headsets, as the communal snoring was so loud, you would have thought the flight was a charter on its way to a sleep apnea convention.

As a new mother is wont to do when she gets a free moment, she collapses. I began to weep quietly and wistfully at the way my life has turned out. I had dreamed of this book tour long before our daughter arrived, so thrilled at the thought of taking the UK by storm with my new mid-list hit novel Honey If You're Leaving Me Take Your Mother With You. They call it chick lit in my country, and I don't mind. In fact, I don't mind anything since I had the baby, not my deadlines, not the laundry and certainly not my personal appearance. I should have been flattered when an old friend who hadn't seen me since the baby was born complimented me on my uni-brow, thinking it was a homage to the freshly popular painter Frida Kahlo. I assured her it wasn't a homage to anyone, well maybe to a season, my own Ode to Spring, and the caterpillars that come with it. The truth is, I just can't find a spare five minutes to pluck my brows.

Even though I am swamped to the gills and committed up to my eyeballs, I could hardly wait to board the plane for one of my favorite countries. I love Great Britain because it is the setting of some of my favorite books. Imagine Jane Eyre in France or Cathy and Heathcliff in Portugal. Impossible! There's no place like England for hard rain, forbidden love, hot gossip and nannies running off with the man of the house while his wife dies slowly on a morphine drip.

I check my reflection in Esme's training spoon, not liking what I see. I'm already worn out like an old shoe, but I'm hoping this tour will be a grand success. Imagine days spent signing copious numbers of books in towns with "shire" at the end of their names, wearing glamorous clothes to the pubs in Scotland, clopping around Piccadilly Circus in high heels and taking tea every afternoon with attractive male journalists who flirt back and have the quiet intelligence and height of Colin Firth and the wicked sexuality of young Oliver Reed (OK, just my quirky romantic combo). I have a dreamscape for my UK book tour that rivals any sexual fantasies that Elizabeth Barrett ever had after a carriage ride down Wimpole Street while tipping a bottle of Jamaican rum under a blanket with Robert Browning. I am determined to have a blast with my little family.

"Miss Martinelli! Over here! It's me, Nigel!"

As I push the caravan through customs, baby seat, stroller, and luggage stacked like the stones that formed the base of the Great Pyramids of Egypt, and hubby carries the baby, I look up to see Nigel Waxman who is waving a small British flag at us. We've chatted on the phone and been emailing for months, so Nigel looks exactly as I had hoped. He's chic and trim in all black (very beat poet), and his face is handsome, a real Celtic combo. Imagine if Ringo Starr and Pierce Brosnan had a baby.

"Kiss, kiss, come darling, we must get to the television studio. Here's a mint."

Nigel gives me a small mint, which I nearly choke on as I introduce my husband and baby. "I hate children generally, but your baby is adorable and I love her instantly!" he says as he coochie coochie coos Esme. It is love at first sight for her, too. "Now, we must run. The telly awaits us."

"What telly?"

"Oh, I got you a last-minute booking on a fabulous television show."

"But I look terrible."

Nigel raises an eyebrow and takes a closer look at me. "The makeup artists at this show are magicians."

"Can they make broken blood vessels around my nose from three hours of pushing out Esme during hard labor disappear?" I chomp down on Nigel's mint. As I chew I realize it isn't the candy that has shattered into rocky rubble, but my back molar. I grab my jaw.

"What's wrong?" my husband asks instantly. I groan and point to my tooth. Jim looks into my mouth; his face goes from concern to worry. "You're right, it's your back tooth. It's missing a wall."

Nigel, who has plowed ahead, turns around impatiently. He sees us huddled in agony and runs to us. "Did you get robbed?" Jim explains what has happened. Esme listens to her father as though she understands every word. She has never seen me like this and is fascinated by her mother in pain. "Here is the plan," Nigel begins, "we stop at the pharmacy and get a temporary tooth kit."

"Temp..." I try to speak but when I do my tongue lashes against the broken tooth like a sea serpent being bludgeoned by a pirate in one of those old B movies.

"Don't speak," Jim instructs me.

"It is a kit, darling. It has paste, wax and tools. This very thing happened to me on holiday and I fixed it up and went along with my day. In fact it worked so well, I ate roast at dinner that night and met the love of my life over dessert, all with a temporary filling. You must remain calm." Suddenly Nigel sounds like Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins, but like all of weak faith (and those in pain), I am looking for someone to hang on to. I want to believe that he can fix this tooth. "Now let go of my arm, darling. After I spackle, and you become a UK television star, I'll take you to my dentist."

"Now open wide," Nigel instructs as he spackles my tooth. Esme opens her mouth wide too, as does Jim. Nigel heats up a small ball of wax and stuffs it onto the side of the tooth. "How does that feel?"

"OK," I tell him but "OK" sounds like "Mokie."

I look in the mirror. My right jaw protrudes, reminding me of Marlon Brando in The Godfather.

"Honey, take Esme for a walk," I say to my husband. He has to process what I said for a moment, and then quickly he says, "Yes. Yes."

"Do I sound funny?" I ask.

"Only on 's' sounds," Nigel chirps.

I want to cry. Jim smiles at me sadly as he takes Esme out of the dressing room.

A tall, cool blond breezes in. "I'm Charlotte. I'm doing your makeup." I marvel at her strong jaw line, which doesn't have an acorn-sized lump like mine. "You will love the host Jenny Barnett."

"Hellloooo." An alabaster brunette beauty in the English rose tradition of Elizabeth Taylor sticks her head in the door. "I'm Jenny. I love your book. Good fun! And the cake recipe!"

"Did it turn out all right?" I say slowly. Nigel explained in the car on the way over that this show makes recipes from books and then interviews the authors as the dish is prepared on television. "Did it turn out all right?" I ask Jenny again. Jenny's head bobs as she follows each of my over-annunciated words like she's watching a juggler's balls in midair at the circus.

"Darling, I heard about the tooth. You sound fine," she says reassuringly, which tells me that I must sound horrible.

"I'll try," I promise. Of course, I sound like I said "I fry." Jenny pretends not to notice.

"We made your cake and thank goodness we made two, because one was completely gobbled by the crew. Can you take a look at this recipe to make sure we have it down correctly?" Jenny gives me a card with the Chocolate Coca-Cola Cake recipe.

CHOCOLATE COCA-COLA CAKE

CAKE

2 cups plain flour

2 cups sugar

A pinch of salt

2 sticks butter

3 tablespoons cocoa

1 cup Coca-Cola

1 1/2 cups

miniature marshmallows

1/2 cup buttermilk

2 eggs, well beaten

1 teaspoon vanilla

ICING

1 stick butter

3 tablespoons cocoa

6 tablespoons Coca-Cola

1 pound powdered sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla

1. For cake: Combine flour, sugar and salt in a saucepan, combine and heat butter, cocoa, Coca-Cola and marshmallows until it begins to boil (add marshmallows last)...remove from heat and stir to dissolve marshmallows. Pour over sugar and flour, and blend well...add remaining cake ingredients and blend well. Pour into greased 9 x 13 pan and bake at 350° for 30 to 40 minutes.

2. For icing: Combine butter, cocoa and Coca-Cola in a saucepan and bring to a boil...mix with powdered sugar and vanilla till it makes a thin paste, then drizzle over the cake while it's hot from the oven.

A haggard stage manager (no more haggard-looking than me) bolts in. "Jen, you're on in five. Miss Martini..." He looks at me.

"Martinelli."

"What?" he says impatiently.

"Martinelli," Nigel says quickly. He implores the stage manager with a look that says, Isn't this one pathetic? Then looks at me sadly.

"You're up at the top of the show. The cake is a smash." The stage manager goes. "See there? The crew adores you already."

"Nigel, I can't talk."

Nigel looks at me as though he is one of those world leaders who wears a headset at the United Nations and is on tape delay for the translation. Once he figures out what I've actually said, he pipes up. "Oh, right, right. Just nod and smile a lot, and let Jenny run the show. You'll do fine."

Nigel leads me down a hallway and a set of metal stairs to a door marked studio. He pulls the door open and ushers me in first. Jenny is talking to the camera. "The show is live," Nigel whispers.

"Now you tell me?"

Suddenly the crew convenes on the stage, a glamorous stage kitchen with a gorgeous cooking island in the center. A team of men commences moving chairs and cameras and tables reconfiguring the lot. Jenny stands in the midst of the fray reading off cards. The stage manager grabs me and puts me in the center on a bar stool next to the cooking island. Two absolutely stunning male models stand by.

"Do you like my bookends?" Jenny winks at the male models.

"They're cute," I tell her. She gives me the same look of confusion that Nigel does, except she is quicker to decipher my poor speech.

"Yes, yes, cute. That's a very American way of putting it." Jenny laughs.

A young woman steps behind the camera and counts back from five.

"We have a treat for you this morning." Jenny speaks directly to the camera. "Anna Martinelli joins us from New York City. How do you like the UK?"

"Smashing." I smile to the camera. Catching my reflection in the monitor, I quickly move the bad jaw upstage so as not to frighten the viewers at home.

"Say hello to Jeff and Dino."

Instead of speaking, I nod to the handsome models.

Jeff, or is it Dino, looks into the camera, while slicing huge hunks of Chocolate Coca-Cola Cake and shoving it onto delicate bone china dessert plates. As they arrange it artfully on the dish, they explain the ingredients.

"What a sweet treat!" Jenny takes a bite.

"It's as if cake and fudge had a baby," I offer.

Jenny looks confused, as do the male models. "Oh quite right. Fudge and Cake had a baby."

"Jeff?" I ask.

"No, I'm Dino, he is Jeff."

"Is this the first time you baked?" Jeff and Dino instantly look confused.

"Do you know who we are?" Dino asks.

"You're...I don't know."

"We're chefs. I'm at the four star Brigadoon restaurant..." Dino begins.

"...And I own Winston's," Jeff adds.

"Oh," I say brightly. Suddenly everyone understands my speech it seems.

"Now, do you understand?" Jenny says gaily. "These are real chefs. They are also menopausal eye candy, but they do have talent too."

"Mr. Delicious," I point to Dino, "...and Mr. Scrumptious," I point to Jeff.

"Yes, yes! Now you've got it!" Jenny applauds. Then, in what I will remember on my deathbed as a mad blur, Jenny describes my novel to the viewers. I see peppy Nigel pacing off camera, but smiling. I look over to the studio door with the porthole window in it and see Esme's tongue licking the glass from the other side and her father pulling her away and winking at me.

"Jenny? May I say something?"

"Of course, darling."

I look into the camera. "Dear people of the United Kingdom...we had a terrible flight. The baby wouldn't sleep. And when we landed, Nigel, he's my publicist, gave me a mint and I bit it and then I broke a tooth. My cheek is usually not this swollen. And I'm usually in better shape. I'm normally quite thin, but I haven't been able to lose the twenty pounds, I don't know the translation in stones, but I put on the weight with Esme. Please don't judge me with this speech impediment and bad hair. I'm really quite funny..." Suddenly, it all is just too overwhelming and I begin to weep.

"Oh for God's sake, we're all working mothers, darling!" Jenny says graciously. "Jeff, Dino, give this American author a hug." Jeff and Dino embrace me. "That's it. A hug sandwich! Two hunks of burning love and a..."

"Slab of American cheese," I add.

"Hilarious! I love it!" Jenny thanks me, and the cameras pull away to another part of the set. "You were magnificent. You turned that rotten tooth into a comic monologue. I loved it! You're a genius!" The crew seems to agree with Jenny. Nigel runs over to me. "Tomorrow when you do the BBC breakfast show, I'm going to blacken your front tooth. You were marvelous! Marvelous!" Nigel practically jumps up and down.

"May we go to the dentist now?" I ask meekly.

"Of course! Though, I'd rather you keep the lump." Nigel holds my jaw tenderly. "The lump is golden!" I look over to my husband and Esme. Jim is holding up Esme's hand, giving me a thumbs-up.

As I follow Nigel out the studio door and through the catacombs back to our car, Esme reaches for me. I take her into my arms, and for a moment I forget the perfect picture I had of this book tour. I wanted to be funny, glamorous and smart on the telly. Instead, I looked and felt like every mommy that ever had a bad day, or should I say, disastrous day. It's our first day of the book tour and I have already learned a big lesson: let go. Let go of the perfect picture and embrace the moment because the moment is extraordinary.

"I hope you're going to shake this pensive mood," Nigel says as he takes Esme into his arms and hands her off to Jim. He helps me into the car. "And don't be afraid. My dentist is the best. See?" Nigel opens his mouth widely as the lion does in Esme's circus book. "They're quite straight and lovely, aren't they?" Nigel asks.

"Beautiful." Except when I say it with the temporary tooth it sounds like "Dutiful."

"I know that our reputation around the world is that our British teeth are a bit like tombstones -- we can thank Charles Dickens for that -- but the truth is, we have come a long way with our dentistry. I would put our choppers up against any in the industrialized world. Or Hollywood," Nigel says with a grin.

"You sold me," I promise Nigel.

As we careen through London, I hold my baby and my jaw, and rest against Jim, who looks fifty years older than he did the day I married him, eight years ago, when he was only twenty-seven. I have ruined this man with a crazy life.

"Are you happy?" I ask my husband, as I do whenever I feel a bit vulnerable.

Jim looks confused for a moment, and then quickly deciphers what I said. "You're never boring, Anna." He kisses me on the forehead. And that, on the first day of my very first UK book tour, is accurate.

Delightful Short Stories

This book, filled with short stories, was simply delightful. It was humorous in parts, sweet in others, and so much fun. It opened my eyes to authors I was not yet familiar with, while I also recognized authors of some of my favorite chic lits. :) Don't miss this one. It is pure fun. I gave it five stars because it is worth reading. It is easy to pick up and put down due to the fact that they are short stories; however, some of the stories were boring while others left me wanting more. I think the beauty of this book is it introduces you to authors that you might not be familar with as of yet.

There's enough good stories to buy it

Because these are short stories, I am going to go through each story and say if I liked it and why. The good thing about this book is the bad ones end quickly, but there were some I didn't want to end!

1. A Day in the Life of My Great Brit Book Tour--3 stars--ok. There is a pretty good looking cake recipe, although I haven't tried it yet to say if it is good! The story however is just so-so. Nothing notable to remember and kind of glad it was over.

2. Five--3.5 stars--I don't think this was the best story for a short story. Might have been ok as an intro for a longer book, but as a short story not that great.

3. Leaving a Light On--5 stars--This made a great short story, but I am not going to tell you more, b/c the ending as a suprise makes it wonderful!

4. Moving Day--3.75 stars--Pretty good, but not as good as #3 which it followed.

5. Yoga Babe--0 stars--Hated it! Makes all the other stories great. Why do I want to read about some egocedntric yoga chic! Skip it!

6. The Truth About Nigel--4.25 stars--I am slightly biased on this one, since Jennifer Weiner is one of my favorite authors and the reason I bought the book. But this one of my favorites in the book.

7. Voodoo Dolls, C-cups and Eminem---5 Stars---I loved this story. Probably my most favorite in the book along with 10. I would recommend the book for this, #3, #6 and #10 alone.

8. The Bamboo Confessions--3.75 stars--Pretty good. It's about finding yourself and realizing who you are away from the people that seem to know you.

9. Amore--4 stars--this was pretty funny, although I wanted more at the end. I hope she found her foreign man!

10. Andromeda on the Street of Ducklings--5 stars--I would give this one ten if I could. Well I guess I can since it's my review and my rating :) This was a perfect short story that was the right length with the right amount of info at the right time.

11. Bad Manners--4 stars--Unfortunately most of us have dated an jerk like this. It was a good story that put it in a funny amusing context.

12. The Two-Month Itch--1 star--Not that great. I didn't enjoy it and it did nothing for me except annoyance.

13. I Know a Woman--3 stars--This was ok...the only reason I even gave it 3 stars, is the very last line is one of the most beautiful I have read. It won't give anything away if you skip immediately to this line and give it a read.

14. Just Visiting--5 Stars--This was great! I absolutely loved it and it made me laugh out loud. She didn't make the best decisions, but anyone can understand why she did it.

15. Forty Days--4.75 stars---didn't give it 5 simply b/c the ones I did give five were sooooo good. But it was a great story and great for the beginnning of a new year. This should be done all the time.

16. The Uncertainty Principle--1.75 stars--This was ok. Not as bad as some of the stories, but not that great.

17. Small Worlds--2 stars--The book ended on a couple of duds in my opinion. This was again decent, but definately not worth recommending the book for. The others in this book help make up the duds though.

I highly recommend this book. It's nice to read decent short stories, some of which are just great.

A cup of versatility mixed with a spoon full of change, Mr. Johnson has provided us with his greatest work to date, a powerful story of love, life, and consequences. This novel Will take you on a journey so true to life that you begin to live and breathe these characters. I tried finding just the right words to describe just how wonderful this novel is, my mind kept wandering back to This quote "To read a writer is for me not merely to get an idea of what he says, but to go off with him and travel in his company". RM JOHNSON SHOCKED ME WITH THIS ONE. THIS ISNT YOUR TYPICAL URBAN/STREET NOVEL. IT HAS DRAMA, LOVE, SUSPENSION, AND THE STREET/HOOD MENTATLITY COMBINED ALL IN ONE. I REALLY ENJOYED THIS NOVEL. IT IS A MUST READ.

Dating Games Had Me At Hello!

Hail! Hail! RM Johnson has done it again with his new and exciting fifth novel Dating Games. I am giving straight praises for this one. It is a must read, well worth ANY dollar spent. This book was undoubtedly amazing, and it had me hooked from the first chapter. Mr. Johnson has definitely put his foot in this novel, and it is obvious!
The book starts off with Livvy Rogers, single mother of two twin girls; Hennesey and Alize, yes the wild combination of two liquors. And that's just the beginning. Livvy is a hard working, underappreciated nurse's aid who has a strong desire to someday be a nurse herself. She wants to give her two teenage daughters a better life than what she had growing up, if only she can get herself together first, and stop falling into bed with the wrong men and for all the wrong reasons. Livvy tries to instill in her girls the value they hold within themselves, but it's hard for them to see her side of things when they don't understand why she doesn't have that same strength to make her own life better.
The story also opens up to the lives of these two twin girls who are dramatically different in their own right. The oldest of the two siblings is Hennesey, a straight A, straight-laced bookworm, who spends her free time being her mother's biggest cheerleader. She's dressed in baggy clothes, glasses, and all of the other things that would hide a beautiful young woman underneath. Her focus is school. She's planning on becoming a doctor as she prepares to head off to college. Boys and falling in love are the two things least on her list, until she runs into a ruff neck, braid wearing older guy name Rafe;and not only does she shed that soft school girl image, she opens herself up to love.
And love. That's the one thing that fast and sassy Alize acts like she isn't looking for. She so hell bent on being the finest thing in every man's life that she doesn't even think about the consequences of the wild activities she's involving herself in. She's willing to use her body and her looks to get exactly what she wants, and if playing sexual games with Smoke, a notorious and brutal drug dealer will thicken up the pockets of her tight hip-hugger jeans, she's down for the challenge. But when that moment comes and more than her life is at jeopardy, Alize finds herself wishing she never headed down that dark road to begin with.
This book was a serious page-turner. I felt like I personally knew these people. I laughed, yelled, and cried with these characters. RM Johnson made me Fall In Love with each and every one of them. And even when the book was over, I found myself wanting to know what was going on in the lives of these unforgettable characters. I'm still wondering.
I'm telling you, Dating Games is hot...and the characters will leave you drunk with pleasure and no doubt wanting more. Can we please say sequel? ; )

Chapter One

The interrogation began like any other.

Kathryn Dance entered the interview room and found the forty-three-year-old man sitting at a metal table, shackled, looking up at her closely. Subjects always did this, of course, though never with such astonishing eyes. Their color was a blue unlike sky or ocean or famous gems.

"Good morning," she said, sitting down across from him.

"And to you," replied Daniel Pell, the man who eight years ago had knifed to death four members of a family for reasons he'd never shared. His voice was soft.

A slight smile on his bearded face, the small, sinewy man sat back, relaxed. His head, covered with long, gray-black hair, was cocked to the side. While most jailhouse interrogations were accompanied by a jingling soundtrack of handcuff chains as subjects tried to prove their innocence with broad, predictable gestures, Daniel Pell sat perfectly still.

To Dance, a specialist in interrogation and kinesics -- body language -- Pell's demeanor and posture suggested caution, but also confidence and, curiously, amusement. He wore an orange jumpsuit, stenciled with "Capitola Correctional Facility" on the chest and "Inmate" unnecessarily decorating the back.

At the moment, though, Pell and Dance were not in Capitola but, rather, a secure interview room at the county courthouse in Salinas, forty miles away.

Pell continued his examination. First, he took in Dance's own eyes -- a green complementary to his blue and framed by square, black-rimmed glasses. He then regarded her French-braided, dark blond hair, the black jacket and beneath it the thick, unrevealing white blouse. He noted too the empty holster on her hip. He was meticulous and in no hurry. (Interviewers and interviewees share mutual curiosity. She told the students in her interrogation seminars, "They're studying you as hard as you're studying them -- usually even harder, since they have more to lose.")

Dance fished in her blue Coach purse for her ID card, not reacting as she saw a tiny toy bat, from last year's Halloween, that either twelve-year-old Wes, his younger sister, Maggie, or possibly both conspirators had slipped into the bag that morning as a practical joke. She thought: How's this for a contrasting life? An hour ago she was having breakfast with her children in the kitchen of their homey Victorian house in idyllic Pacific Grove, two exuberant dogs at their feet begging for bacon, and now here she sat, across a very different table from a convicted murderer.

She found the ID and displayed it. He stared for a long moment, easing forward. "Dance. Interesting name. Wonder where it comes from. And the California Bureau...what is that?"

"Bureau of Investigation. Like an FBI for the state. Now, Mr. Pell, you understand that this conversation is being recorded?"

He glanced at the mirror, behind which a video camera was humming away. "You folks think we really believe that's there so we can fix up our hair?"

Mirrors weren't placed in interrogation rooms to hide cameras and witnesses -- there are far better high-tech ways to do so -- but because people are less inclined to lie when they can see themselves.

Dance gave a faint smile. "And you understand that you can withdraw from this interview anytime you want and that you have a right to an attorney?"

"I know more criminal procedure than the entire graduating class of Hastings Law rolled up together. Which is a pretty funny image, when you think about it."

More articulate than Dance expected. More clever too.

The previous week, Daniel Raymond Pell, serving a life sentence for the 1999 murders of William Croyton, his wife and two of their children, had approached a fellow prisoner due to be released from Capitola and tried to bribe him to run an errand after he was free. Pell told him about some evidence he'd disposed of in a Salinas well years ago and explained that he was worried the items would implicate him in the unsolved murder of a wealthy farm owner. He'd read recently that Salinas was revamping its water system. This had jogged his memory and he'd grown concerned that the evidence would be discovered. He wanted the prisoner to find and dispose of it.

Pell picked the wrong man to enlist, though. The short-timer spilled to the warden, who called the Monterey County Sheriff's Office. Investigators wondered if Pell was talking about the unsolved murder of farm owner Robert Herron, beaten to death a decade ago. The murder weapon, probably a claw hammer, was never found. The Sheriff's Office sent a team to search all the wells in that part of town. Sure enough, they found a tattered T-shirt, a claw hammer and an empty wallet with the initials R.H. stamped on it. Two fingerprints on the hammer were Daniel Pell's.

The Monterey County prosecutor decided to present the case to the grand jury in Salinas, and asked CBI Agent Kathryn Dance to interview him, in hopes of a confession.

Dance now began the interrogation, asking, "How long did you live in the Monterey area?"

He seemed surprised that she didn't immediately begin to browbeat. "A few years."

"Where?"

"Seaside." A town of about thirty thousand, north of Monterey on Highway 1, populated mostly by young working families and retirees. "You got more for your hard-earned money there," he explained. "More than in your fancy Carmel." His eyes alighted on her face.

His grammar and syntax were good, she noted, ignoring his fishing expedition for information about her residence.

Dance continued to ask about his life in Seaside and in prison, observing him the whole while: how he behaved when she asked the questions and how he behaved when he answered. She wasn't doing this to get information -- she'd done her homework and knew the answers to everything she asked -- but was instead establishing his behavioral baseline.

In spotting lies, interrogators consider three factors: nonverbal behavior (body language, or kinesics), verbal quality (pitch of voice or pauses before answering) and verbal content (what the suspect says). The first two are far more reliable indications of deception, since it's much easier to control what we say than how we say it and our body's natural reaction when we do.

The baseline is a catalog of those behaviors exhibited when the subject is telling the truth. This is the standard the interrogator will compare later with the subject's behavior when he might have a reason to lie. Any differences between the two suggest deception.

Finally Dance had a good profile of the truthful Daniel Pell and moved to the crux of her mission in this modern, sterile courthouse on a foggy morning in June. "I'd like to ask you a few questions about Robert Herron."

Eyes sweeping her, now refining their examination: the abalone shell necklace, which her mother had made, at her throat. Then Dance's short, pink-polished nails. The gray pearl ring on the wedding-band finger got two glances.

"How did you meet Herron?"

"You're assuming I did. But, no, never met him in my life. I swear."

The last sentence was a deception flag, though his body language wasn't giving off signals that suggested he was lying.

"But you told the prisoner in Capitola that you wanted him to go to the well and find the hammer and wallet."

"No, that's what he told the warden." Pell offered another amused smile. "Why don't you talk to him about it? You've got sharp eyes, Officer Dance. I've seen them looking me over, deciding if I'm being straight with you. I'll bet you could tell in a flash that that boy was lying."

She gave no reaction, but reflected that it was very rare for a suspect to realize he was being analyzed kinesically.

"But then how did he know about the evidence in the well?"

"Oh, I've got that figured out. Somebody stole a hammer of mine, killed Herron with it and planted it to blame me. They wore gloves. Those rubber ones everybody wears on CSI."

Still relaxed. The body language wasn't any different from his baseline. He was showing only emblems -- common gestures that tended to substitute for words, like shrugs and finger pointing. There were no adaptors, which signal tension, or affect displays -- signs that he was experiencing emotion.

"But if he wanted to do that," Dance pointed out, "wouldn't the killer just call the police then and tell them where the hammer was? Why wait more than ten years?"

"Being smart, I'd guess. Better to bide his time. Then spring the trap."

"But why would the real killer call the prisoner in Capitola? Why not just call the police directly?"

A hesitation. Then a laugh. His blue eyes shone with excitement, which seemed genuine. "Because they're involved too. The police. Sure...The cops realize the Herron case hasn't been solved and they want to blame somebody. Why not me? They've already got me in jail. I'll bet the cops planted the hammer themselves."

"Let's work with this a little. There're two different things you're saying. First, somebody stole your hammer before Herron was killed, murdered him with it and now, all this time later, dimes you out. But your second version is that the police got your hammer after Herron was killed by someone else altogether and planted it in the well to blame you. Those're contradictory. It's either one or the other. Which do you think?"

"Hm." Pell thought for a few seconds. "Okay, I'll go with number two. The police. It's a setup. I'm sure that's what happened."

She looked him in the eyes, green on blue. Nodding agreeably.

"Let's consider that. First, where would the police have gotten the hammer?"

He thought. "When they arrested me for that Carmel thing."

"The Croyton murders in ninety-nine?"

"Right. All the evidence they took from my house in Seaside."

Dance's brows furrowed. "I doubt that. Evidence is accounted for too closely. No, I'd go for a more credible scenario: that the hammer was stolen recently. Where else could somebody find a hammer of yours? Do you have any property in the state?"

"No."

"Any relatives or friends who could've had some tools of yours?"

"Not really."

An Essential Tool for Caregivers

"This must be a mistake! How could his drug costs rise from $150 per month to $1101 in just three weeks?" My hand shook while I read the pharmacy bill.

The bill was accurate. In only three weeks at an Alzheimer's care unit, my father's drug expenses had soared an incredible 734%. And, the way I saw it, his quality of life had decreased about the same percentage. Walking and talking when he entered, he now spent his days in a wheelchair, unable to walk and drugged, in a constant stupor.

"I've got to do something." The thought repeated over and over in my head. "How can this be?" Then a quick trip to the grocery brought the help I needed. It came in the form of a thick paperback book, The PDR Pocket Guide to Prescription Drugs.

Excellent reference

If you or your family is taking prescription drugs this is an essential reference to own. Although its focus is on prescriptions drugs it also covers some non-prescription pain relivers (asperin, tyrenol, motrin, etc). The typeface is confortable to read...not too small. This is a pocket-sized book but thick. Not something to put in a back pocket or purse but easy enought to carry around and light. So inexpensive, anyone can own it. This edition is based on the 2003 Physicans Desk Reference. There will be a new edition due out in November 2005.

Humanity's war against the nasty alien Posleens continues in military SF author Ringo's latest entry in his popular Legacy of the Aldenata series (after 2002's When the Devil Dances), but the unambivalent, almost innocent joie de combat of the earlier, pre-9/11 books is missing here. Having learned to combine human strategy with superior (although captured) technology, a Posleen overlord threatens to break through into unoccupied human territory. Opposing this effort are Major Mike O'Neal and his battalion of armored combat suits, plus conventional armor units lead by a Brobdingnagian mobile gun with a razor-wielding cartoon rabbit emblazoned on its side. The battle scenes are as vivid as ever, but the consequences lie more heavily than before on the warriors, as when O'Neal approves a nuclear strike near where his remaining family are located in order to save his command. It becomes increasingly clear that some alien "allies" would prefer that the humans and Posleens destroy one another and leave the galactic status quo undisturbed. Attentive readers may notice some overlap with When the Devil Dances, which Ringo explains in an afterword. Despite the overall dark tone, the author's trademark gallows humor shines through ("This is what you get for letting rednecks play with antimatter, boss"). So does a bit of hope: Ringo concludes his afterword by asserting "the good guys always win in the end."

The fourth and final novel (for the moment, at least) about Earth versus the Posleen--the same kind of glorious jumble of a book as A Hymn before Battle (2000), Gust Front (2001), and When the Devil Dances [BKL Ap 15 02] each was--brings the war for human survival to a thundering climax. Cally O'Neal and her father, Mike O'Neal, are armed and dangerous in the forefront of the action, along with a right good crew of relatives and friends. The supertank Bun- Bun and its crew also hammer their way through the Posleen, and are hammered in return. They are ably supported by voluptuous MI Major LeBlanc, now a tank battalion commander, and the superweapons created by Dr. Miguel Castanuelo; ably opposed by the Posleen, whose smarts and courage ensure real suspense right up to a slightly deus-ex-machina conclusion. Ringo most probably plans to resolve the human conflict with the Posleen's secret puppet masters, so, as before, enjoy in the expectation of more to come. Roland Green

The Rest of the Story

Hell's Faire (2003) is the fourth novel in the Legacy of the Aldenata series, following When the Devil Dances. In the previous volume, the Posleen have begun their main assault, overcoming all fixed defenses everywhere in the world except the eastern United States and Canada. Their drive to Asheville through Rabun Gap has been stopped temporarily by a nuclear bombardment. There is a short lull in the fighting as both sides reorganize and refit.

In this novel, Mike O'Neal and his 555th Mobile Infantry are inserted into Rabun Gap to prepare for the upcoming Posleen assault. However, Tulo'stenaloor, senior Posleen commander in the forces attacking the Gap, has learned a little about the human method of warfare and sets up an ambush for the 555th.

Mike's daughter, Callie O'Neal, is alone in Cache 4 on the O'Neal farm. Mike's father had been caught on the surface during the nuke blasts and, when Callie found him, his body was cold and buried under the debris. Now Callie prepares to leave the farm, but just then the defense forces drop a salvo of strategic nukes on three passes near Mountain City. Since things are a little hectic outside, she decides to wait a while before venturing out.

Sergeant Major Mosovich and the refugees are only a few miles from Cache 4, but are cut off from the defending forces. Moreover, his AID advises them that the nukes are incoming. They have been running the ridgelines, but these are too exposed with nuclear blasts on the way. Jake leads his party back to Cache 4.

Meanwhile, the maintenance brigade for Sheva Nine -- Bun-Bun -- has finally caught up to the monster weapon. They bring with them Paul Kilzer, one of the designers of the Sheva gun platform. He has a few ideas for enhancing the weapon. Moreover, he looks like Riff in the Sluggy Freelance cartoons.

BTW, some reviewers have referred to Bun-Bun as a supertank. On the contrary, the Sheva Nine is a lightly armored self-propelled gun, with very poor mobility. The weather shield is not an armored turret, but rather a relatively thin screen to keep out rain and small-arms fire. Notice that the heavier Posleen weapons have little trouble penetrating the weather shield or even the hull itself. The Shevas were originally designed to kill Posleen landers and C-decs, which they do quite handily. Anti-personnel actions became possible only with the addition of the MetalStorm turrets. Even then, Bun-Bun would not have survived close contact with the Posleen without her escorts (and the oversized Claymores).

Back on the campus, Dr. Miguel Castanuelo, a graduate of Georgia Tech who is now a professor at arch-rival UT at Knoxville, is an expert on micro-containment of anti-matter. He has been trying to devise a way to use anti-matter as a fuel for cars, trucks and other small vehicles. After studying the Indowy methods of containment, he concludes that it is a religious thing and returns to his previous notions. He manages to develop a process of encapsulation in bucky balls, but the results are rather radioactive for several days afterwards. Of course, this isn't a problem with an area denial weapon, so he produces a big orange surprise for the Posleen.

This novel is a continuation of the previous volume. In fact, it would have been incorporated into When the Devil Dances except for the events surrounding 9/11. Although the author is apologetic about the lapse in his writing that caused this portion to be delayed, the final results may have been even better than the originally planned trilogy. This volume contains 330 pages (including the Sluggy Freelance cartoons) and the previous volume contains 494 pages. Even eliminating the backstory verbiage, the combined volume would be larger than some of the Wheel of Time books. My guess is that the paperback would have been split into two volumes anyway.

This volume ends the Legacy of the Aldenata series for now. The author mentions further tales about the backstory and other aspects of the events and characters in this series, but the Posleen invasion is terminated.

Highly recommended for Ringo fans and anyone else who enjoys military science fiction with the ring of authenticity. New readers, however, are strongly encouraged to start with A Hymn Before Battle to get the full effect.

315 pages of action

It is very difficult for some of the people here to excuse John Ringo for not including Hell's Faire as part of the earlier book. It's not a stand-alone - instead out of 325 pages of text, it's 315 pages of action, and about 10 pages of explanation.
Apparently these people have never suffered from writer's block themselves. Given the background of John Ringo - it would be very difficult for him to try to write a fictional story of the world falling apart when the real world was falling apart on our TV screens.
The Amazon price is fair for this - I wouldn't pay full price for it, since it's only 325 pages, and it only took me two and a half hours to read. The CD included, though, has another $100 worth of books on it, which is great for Baen to do this.
There will be other books in this series - there are a lot of things to resolve, such as Mike's other daughter, plus what his father and Callie do for the Bane Sidhe. That the Darhel are attempting to bargain again with the Posleen only screams additional series.
If you're a Sluggy fan and found Ringo due the references, hang in there. Read the books from the beginning - and remember, don't let rednecks play with anti-matter!

Hard to put down!

Having read all of the Posleen war books ("Hymn Before Battle", "Gust Front", "When the Devil Dances", and "Hell's Faire", as well as "Cally's War")I can truthfully say they were all excellent. My biggest problem was that they were not all read in proper sequence so I had difficulty with the connection between them. Going from Hymn to Devil Dances to Callly's and back to Gust before finishing with the Faire is NOT the way to read the series.

By the time I got to "Hell's Faire" I was totally enthralled with the whole series and couldn't put the book down! It took me one whole weekend to read, and I got nothing else accomplished. At that, it was well worth it!

Some repeating ofmany of the explanations got a little cumbersome after the first one or two, but I waded through that pretty quickly to get to the good parts.

Since I was born and raised in Tidewater and Northern Virginia (my Dad was a career Combat Engineer), I can identify with and recognize all the places mentioned even without the map helps. As such the story is much more real to me because it is about real places. Thankfully they are fictional events that happened to those settings.

As for the incident with the mistaken gain control setting on the geiger counter, I did that myself once (I was stationed on a Nike Hercules site in San Francisco) so I know it is an easy mistake to make if you are not very careful. Fortunately I caught the mistake before anyone got their butt in a sling so all I got was a lot of ribbing for being a newbie.

I plan on waiting a few months and then re-reading all of the books of this series IN ORDER so I can get the proper perspective and full flavor. And I highly recommend anyone else to do the same!
