Once Upon a Day: A Novel, by Lisa Tucker

Dorothea’s father, like all good parents, wanted to keep his children safe. But unlike other parents, Charles O’Brien believed the only way to do so was to leave everything behind, including his very successful life. In a rocky, desolate corner of New Mexico, on a thirty-five acre estate he called the “Sanctuary,” Charles raised the children in complete isolation, with books and encyclopedias, records and a grand piano, but no television, computer, radio, or even a newspaper. Now, Dorothea, at twenty-three, is leaving this place for the first time, in search of her missing brother - and venturing into the world. Dorothea’s search will turn into an odyssey of discovery, leading to the truth of her family’s past and the terrifying day that changed her father forever. But Dorothea’s journey will also introduce her to an unusual cast of characters, including a homeless girl from Missouri who becomes a jazz singer and a doctor turned cabdriver who has suffered his own losses. Together, they have a chance to make a discovery of a different kind: that though a heart can be broken by the tragic events of a day, a day can also bring a new chance at love and a deeper understanding of life’s infinite possibilities.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Tucker's outstanding novel (after Shout Down the Moon) is as structurally dextrous as it is emotionally satisfying, boasting a chorus of extraordinary voices and assured parallel plot lines separated by four decades. In the present day, 23-year-old Dorothea has left her overprotective father's secluded 35-acre New Mexico estate, called the Sanctuary, where she and her brother, Jimmy, had been sheltered from current news and all modern-day innovations. Searching for her runaway brother in St. Louis, Dorothea meets a recently widowed doctor-turned-cabbie, who introduces her to the vibrant outside world he's been trying to escape. A parallel tale set in the 1970s follows the budding romance between a successful film director and the waif who becomes his muse, his wife and the object of his obsessive control. The tour de force resolution that ties both stories together is a lyrically poignant reminder of the necessity of hope. An exceptionally empathetic storyteller, Tucker has created a haunting, gripping novel that brims with graceful writing and fragile characters. This should be catnip for book clubs, whether they devour it as a page-turner about parenting and family or discuss its subtle meditations on fate and coincidence, wealth and poverty, freedom and safety, fairy tales and American dreams.

From Booklist
In what may well be her breakout book, after Shout Down the Moon (2004), the gifted Tucker tells a compelling love story with uncommon empathy and grace. Stephen Spaulding loses his family in a freak accident and with them any hope that his actions can make a difference. He gives up his medical practice and begins driving a cab. That's how he meets 23-year-old Dorothea, who seems to be dressed like a throwback to the 1950s, complete with saddle shoes. She's looking for her brother, who has run away from their New Mexico ranch. Stephen helps Dorothea track down the brother and, at the same time, learn why her father fled Hollywood, changing his children's names and keeping them completely isolated from the outside world. The plotline of the Hollywood story is, appropriately enough, over the top, but that detracts from the genuinely moving love story that develops between the wounded Stephen and the heartbreakingly naive Dorothea. Here's hoping the talented Tucker will rein in the melodrama the next time out. Joanne Wilkinson

A compelling character-driven novel
By Bob Sanchez
I just finished reading Once Upon a Day by Lisa Tucker. It's a compelling story of love, loss and forgiveness. The book moves easily among points of view while always advancing the story.

A single traumatic day alters the lives of a loving family forever in ways they could never imagine. Intruders assault an actress in her home. Her movie director husband cannot stop the tragedy but is determined that no harm will ever come to his family again. His wife loves him but eventually chafes at his overprotectiveness.

In a seemingly unrelated disaster, a doctor has suddenly lost his wife and daughter and his sense of purpose in life. These two tragic stories become one as the doctor-turned-cabdriver picks up a fare who may change his life once again.

Lisa Tucker has created a cast of believable and sympathetic characters. Everyone suffers, and with good reason. A couple of the characters seem purely innocent while remaining complex enough to compel the reader's interest. The director and his wife both have deep flaws, as do most people. He becomes a jerk and eventually worse, but out of love and insecurity and not out of malice. The couple's actions indadverdently compound their family pain, and now everyone must cope with the consequences.

This isn't a book I ordinarily would have read, but it's my local book club's choice for this month. I wasn't bored for a minute, though, and I recommend it to anyone who likes character-driven fiction.

Sweet, Sad, Thought Provoking
By Amazon Customer
I found the book completely engrossing. You must get past heartbreak and horror, innocence and shame, recriminations and regrets, all beautifully detailed, to get to the point of the narative: Even though we can never have complete control over every aspect of our lives, we are responsible for how we react to pain and tragedy. Ms Tucker does this in a straightforward, non-judgemental prose that is both sweet, and at times, very funny. Dorathea is a remarkable character. Her trust and unaffected mannor are precious. I would recommend this book to all my friends and family.

Couldn't put it down!
By Robin Welch
For months before this book came out I looked forward to receiving my copy of Once Upon a Day -- and I was not disapointed. As a writer myself, I admire the authority and reliability of Lisa Tucker's writer's voice. In Once Upon a Day, as in all her books, the characters are unique, strong within their fragility, and always interesting and beautifully drawn. I began the book one day after lunch and read through the night. Thanks for another great read!
