The Way of King Arthur: The True Story of King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table (Adventures in History), by Christopher Hibbert

The romances about King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table are probably the best known legends in the Western world. The true fascination of the Arthurian legend lies in the fact that their hero is not a myth but an actual historical figure who lived in a time full of danger and intrigue. With the crumbling of the Roman Empire, the people of Britain found themselves conducting a desperate defence of their island against barbarian invaders. Author Christopher Hibbert brings those troubled times vividly to life, building a fascinating picture of the sixth century British warrior who was to become the legendary King Arthur.

A King who sought peace for his people
By Theodore A. Rushton
This beautiful and eloquent search for the kernel of truth that gave birth to the glorious legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table is probably the finest and most cogent account available.
Hibbert understands two elements needed to make sense of the Arthurian legend -- the factual basis of history, and the enduring significance of what develops when fact grows into an expression of the ideals of a people. Originally published in 1969, this somewhat typographically sloppy edition looks to have been hastily re-issued to cash in on the publicity for the much derided 2004 film version of King Arthur.
"The search for the man himself has become a continuing quest for what lies hidden in the hearts of all men," writes Hibbert, the perfect guide to legend and fact. It's a concise book, less time to read than attending the film, but of far more value and meaning.
His closing tribute is to T. H. White's masterful "Once and Future King", in which King Arthur was "not a distressed Briton hopping about in a suit of woad in the fifth century" but a true knight with "an open face, with kind eyes and a reliable or faithful expression, as though he was a good learner who enjoyed being alive . . . . ." Like White, he fully understands the significance of the legend.
So, who was Arthur? Well, legends are expressions of the ideals a society want to attain. In today's world, President George Bush wants to be "a war president." In contrast, King Arthur was a leader who defeated the ruthless terrorists of his time and sought to be known as a man who brought peace to the English people. The Round Table was an expression of the equality of all who upheld, in the words of White, "the idea that force ought to be used, if it is used at all, on behalf of justice, not on its own account."
Hibbert leaves no doubt that a real Arthur once existed, but he is not so foolish as to proclaim any specific legend or locale as the true Camelot or any specific man as the original Arthur. He carefully illustrates how church and civil authorities have used the legend to bolster their own selfish causes. It is a marvelous exercise in the study and application of history, illustrating the contrast between legend, fact and what we know to be true. After reading this book, even the movie may make sense as more than a woad and weird action adventure.
"But the quest for Arthur of Britain never can destroy the beauty of the works that his legend has inspired or the fascination of the legend itself," Hibbert writes. This book is a perfect introduction to those ideas and ideals. You won't do better, even though you may later plunge into the wonderful depth and detail of other accounts of the Arthurian legend.
It is a great book. Anyone interested in anything from early England to Camelot will love it.

Simple but well done
By S. E. Kennedy
In this book the author searches for the beginnings of the King Arthur legend and trys to determine if there is any actual historical basis for the character of Arthur himself. The book is short - only a bit more than 100 pages and my copy is in what looks to be 14 point type - so BIG PRINT. It reads VERY fast. I finished it on a flight from Minneapolis to Detroit with time to spare.

I'm a HUGE King Arthur fan and I found myself very intrigued. However, don't let this be your only reference into the legend - there are many many versions of the legend (as the author freely admits). If you have read an Arthurian legend or two and wonder about the history of the tale - this will quickly turn you onto other sources for further research. If you are well versed in the legend already - look for something more in-depth. This is really for an Arthurian beginner.

LookingThe Way of KIng Arthur
By Edward Rubins
Though the book provides an intresting look at ideas concerning Arthur and his possible origins it provides no expansion on therories already proposed by other historians. I found the Chapters on the Medieval mindset about Arthur fascinating but over all there was no definite conclusions. The book lacks a cohesive form and near the end is nearly entirely given to speculative archeology. Finishing up with an amazingly lacking Bibliography the book provides very little in the way of expanding the field of history. It is best left to the amature historian or curious lay person.

Elvis Presley: The Man. The Life. The Legend., by Pamela Clarke Keogh

That voice, those eyes, that hair, the cars, the girls . . . Elvis Presley revolutionized American pop culture when, at the age of twenty-one, he became the world's first modern superstar. A Memphis Beau Brummel even before he found fame, Elvis had a personal style that, like his music, had such a direct impact on his audience that it continues to influence us to this day. Elvis Presley compellingly examines Elvis' life and style to reveal the generous, complex, spiritual man behind the fourteen-carat-gold sunglasses and answers the question, "Why does Elvis matter" "Elvis Presley is the greatest cultural force in the twentieth century" proclaimed Leonard Bernstein. By any measure, Presley's life was remarkable. From his modest beginnings in a two-room house to his meteoric rise to international fame, everything about his life - his outsized talent to his car collection - clamored for attention. And he got it; even today, Elvis continues to fascinate. Written with the assistance of Elvis Presley Enterprises, Pamela Clarke Keogh's biography draws on extensive research and interviews with Presley friends and family, among them Priscilla Presley, Joe Esposito, Jerry Schilling, Larry Geller, Bernard Lansky, famed Hollywood photographer Bob Willoughby, and designer Bill Belew. Offered access to the Graceland archives, the author considered thousands of images, selecting more than one hundred color and black-and-white photographs for this book, many of them rarely seen before. Both a significant biography of the greatest entertainer of our time and a provocative celebration of what Presley means to America today, Elvis Presley introduces the man behind the myth, a very human superstar beloved by millions.

A perfect gift from a true Elvis fan...
By Dr. Lisa F.
My sister in law is a die hard Elvis fan (probably in the womb.) She has all the books you can think of. I know somehow she spoke with the author a few times, after reading the book, and I must say her review was true. I read it in 2 days and I could not put it down, like her! She purchased 20 copies for family members and I was so very happy to get one, even after I finished reading it. My mother in law also has a book on Jackie from before and the writer is very much appreciated and it is obvious the hard work put into it. It even inspired my sister in law to go to Memphis and see Graceland as soon as possible, although she was always afraid to go alone. This book has encouraged her to do so. I was very impressed and my sis in law has great taste!

Didn't like the stickers

The book itself is amazing. It came in excellent condition, the binding hadn't even been cracked from a first read! However, the book did come with two stickers on it, which I did not like. Luckily, they easily peeled off.

In this intensely riveting, action-packed novel, "virtuoso mayhem machine" (Booklist) Michael Forsythe returns to his native Ireland -- where a dangerous and beautiful old flame causes way more trouble than he bargained for.

Running hotel security at a resort in Lima, Peru, Michael has been lying low and staying out of trouble -- until two Colombian hit men hold him at gunpoint, and force him to take a call from his ex-lover, Bridget Callaghan. At that moment she offers him a terrible choice: come to Ireland and find my daughter, or my men will kill you -- now.

Once in Dublin, in the span of a single day, Michael penetrates the heart of an IRA network, escapes his own kidnapping, and then worms his way into a sinister criminal underground in search of the missing girl. But before the day is out, Michael once again finds himself face-to-face with his kidnappers -- as well as the lovely and murderous Bridget. There he must confront a series of shocking truths about himself -- and do whatever it takes to stay alive.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. McKinty finishes up his knockout trilogy featuring Irish mercenary Michael Forsythe with his most visceral, satisfying effort yet (after 2006's The Dead Yard). Perennial fugitive Forsythe has drifted to Lima, Peru, where he's grabbed by a couple of strong-arm men who force him at gunpoint to take a phone call. Bridget Callaghan, a former lover and the one-time fiancée of Irish-American mobster Darkey White (whom Forsythe killed), has finally tracked Forsythe down and offers a modest proposal: come to Belfast and find her 11-year-old daughter, Siobhan, who's gone missing, or take a bullet. Our man arrives in Dublin on June 16, when the city is overrun with Joyceans celebrating Bloomsday. Dodging various assassins, Forsythe makes his way up to Belfast. Back on his home turf, he sets out after the girl, apparently kidnapped by a fringe group of IRA paramilitaries. McKinty writes masterful action scenes, and he whips up a frenzy as the bullets begin to fly. Devotees of Irish literature will also appreciate the many allusions to Joyce's Ulysses.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Michael Forsythe is a virtuoso mayhem machine--except when it comes to handling his fatal attraction to Bridget Callaghan, the ex-girlfriend turned New York Irish Mob boss who's been trying to kill him for a decade. Fittingly, then, this final chapter in McKinty's Forsthe trilogy forces Michael to sort out his relationship with the fire-haired Bridget or die trying. After rousting him from a Peruvian hotel security gig in spectacular fashion, Bridget orders Michael to help rescue her adolescent daughter from kidnappers in Ireland. As literary luck would have it, he lands in Dublin on Bloomsday and sets off on a daylong journey to Belfast--although it's more path of destruction than Joycean deconstruction. While this novel outpaces immediate predecessor The Dead Yard (2006), it doesn't quite catch Dead I Well May Be (2003). But McKinty overcomes minor missteps--a key revelation tipped almost from the outset and a less-than-satisfying final scene--with his trademark dark lyricism, one great red herring, and a masterful plot twist that brings Forsythe's character full circle in a lightning flash. And Michael continues to play his insouciant hard-guy role with aplomb. "You know how much damage your skull will do to my gun if I pull this trigger at point-blank range?" he asks one inept crew leader. The answer: "None at all." Raise a glass; young Forsythe will be missed. Frank Sennett

The writing is pure poetry. The book is suspenseful, dark and very fast-paced.
By Diana H. Maine
THE BLOOMSDAY DEAD is Book 3 of Adrian McKinty’s Michael Forsythe series.
The title is great as Michael finds himself in the middle of a Bloomsday Parade in Dublin. Of course, he has joined the crowd and stolen a hat and jacket so as to blend in and escape from would-be killers just hours after landing.
I thought Michael had a good gig going for himself in Peru as security head in a very upscale resort hotel. But life is never peaceful for our Michael and he is blackmailed/coerced by his old lover and fiance of Darkey White (who he brutally murdered) to find her kidnapped daughter in Belfast.
Michael has never gotten over his illicit affair with his old boss’s fiance and this desire to see Bridget again leads to 24 hours (was it even that long?) of violence, torture, murder and depravity in his old stomping grounds of Northern Ireland.
The writing is pure poetry, but the violence is a bit hard to stomach. The book is suspenseful, dark and very fast-paced.
The ending has a wee bit of a surprise and I’m still wondering if our Michael can live a life without the constant of violence and suspicion.
The descriptions of Belfast gave this book an incredible sense of place.
My favorite of Michael’s musings (about the Protestants): “They had gotten it all wrong - the way to really preserve a culture was to celebrate and nurture the memory of a glorious defeat, not a famous victory. That’s why Gallipoli, Gettysburg, The Field of Blackbirds, the Alamo became the foundation myths for the Kiwis, the American South, Serbs and Texas. Every year the Shi’a celebrate a massacre and, of course, Christianity is founded upon an execution.”

Great book - Lousy binding.. by Scribner
By meBruce
I bought several books by Adrian McKinty after reading a couple of his books that I really enjoyed and again the Book and Author are great, I would rate them as -5- Stars, but the binding is lousy, very cheaply manufactured!
Shortly after starting the books pages started coming loose from the binding and by the time I had completed book most pages were no longer attached! Numerous pages completely adrift just unbelievably cheaply made.. I believe this is totally unacceptable when making a purchase from Amazon and the publisher of these books "Scribner" should be removed from Amazon's vendor list.
It really detracts form being able to enjoy reading a book when the pages are falling out, besides I like to save my books, pass them on to other readers and these books are so lousy they need to be tossed - very disappointing.

"The Wrath of Odysseus"
By Gary Griffiths
Michael Forsythe's transformation to the stone-cold killer without remorse is definitively and brutally completed in "The Bloomsday Dead", the stunning conclusion to the "Dead" trilogy - Adrian McKinty's epic landmark experiment in cross breeding violence and poetry with an unmistakably Irish brand of black humor.

This time around, our fugitive/hero Michael Forsythe, now early 30s, is running security for a luxury hotel in Lima, Peru. Seems that ex-lover and current nemesis Bridget Callaghan is now riding herd over the Irish mob in New York. But the deadly siren Bridget, vortex of Michael's odyssey into Hell and back, is in trouble. Her twelve year-old daughter has been kidnapped and, figuring Forsythe's knowledge of Belfast and by now legendary knack for survival uniquely qualifies him, sends a band of local thugs to collect him with an unambiguous "get my daughter back or die now". As usual, McKinty wastes no time in dialing up the action and bloodshed, and before 20 pages have turned, the three would-be assassins are colorfully dispatched at Forsythe's coldly efficient hand.

But old love dies hard, and thinking with the 'other' head, Forsythe defies logic and indeed returns to Northern Ireland with the not so unconscious thoughts of reuniting with the bewitching Bridget after rescuing her daughter. What follows is a predictable but nonetheless enjoyable page-turner of murder and mayhem brilliantly rendered in McKinty's patented palette of grays, blacks, and darker blacks. If Forstyhe weren't the "good" guy, we'd easily be comparing his rough vengeance to the sadism of "Touched" McGuigan of predecessor "The Dead Yard". Or the steely eyed and ruthless Chigurh of McCarthy's "No Country for Old Men" - a boy scout by comparison. McKinty doesn't disappoint in slamming the lid on Forsthye's journey, throwing in a couple of twists and a genuine white-knuckled blockbuster of a finale that will leave you nearly as spent as the battered Forsythe, who after running the gauntlet through three McKinty novels has more holes in his body than a cheese grater.

In any event - pick your superlatives - McKinty is the real deal, an unrepentant writer who without apology spills blood and carnage across the pages intermingled with Homeric metaphor and poetic riffs, entertaining the reader with pleasures that would be merely guilty if not so beautifully written and cleverly plotted. Top of the class - an absolute must read for the action/thriller/suspense junkie.

Told in 50's unique voice, the narrative drips with the raw insight, street wisdom, and his struggle to survive at all costs -- and behold the riches of the American Dream.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. The rap superstar known as 50 Cent was born Curtis James Jackson III in 1976. His mother, a smalltime drug dealer, was murdered when he was eight, but that didn't stop him from pursuing her profession. 50 Cent is unflinchingly honest about his mother, his drug past and just about everything else in this raw, literate memoir chronicling his rise from Jamaica, Queens, to the top of the Billboard charts. In his neighborhood, recalls 50 Cent, the only people with money were the drug dealers: "They were my role models." By 11, he'd made his first sale. Over the next decade, 50 Cent evolved from a hustler selling capsules of crack cocaine ("pieces") to a kingpin purchasing by the kilo ("weight"). With money came girls, clothes, cars—and trouble. 50 Cent describes spraying bullets at rivals, outrunning police on his motorcycle and waking up to a drug raid on his house. He avoided jail by serving time in a boot camp–style incarceration center, which did nothing but turn him into a "stronger, meaner, and more focused criminal." His big break into music came through a chance meeting with Jam Master Jay (of Run-DMC). Yet even while trying to break into the business, 50 Cent couldn't leave his past behind, wearing bulletproof vests to meetings with record executives and slipping back into the drug trade when his career didn't take off immediately. Fans will discover the origins of 50 Cent's famous feud with Ja Rule; they'll also get more details about the notorious 2000 shooting that left him with nine bullet holes in his body. Opinionated, unrepentant and unabashedly self-promoting, 50 Cent's memoir celebrates the rapper's peculiar brand of the American Dream (and the title of his breakthrough album): Get Rich or Die Tryin'.

A Word From A Senior Citizen
By R. Reed
I am 65 years old and never heard of, "Get Rich or Die Trying." I believe that rap is modern day poetry, and part of the record of contemporary history. I'd heard the name and read recently that this guy won a court case most young men don't challenge. So I ordered the cd and I am glad I did. The reader was excellent at communicating the language of the book and the street milieu. It's a long road, Fifty. Pace yourself.

Not a big reader.
By D-Ash
But this was a great book, usually I find it hard for books to keep my attention, but not this one. Without a doubt the best book I have ever read. I tells the true story of 50 Cent in his own words. He had a tough life and made it big, you can't hate a man for that. If people miss out on reading this masterpiece then they are surelly missing a great read for anyone, not just fans of Hip-Hop or 50 Cent. Buy this book or check it out at the library. It should win some of those book awards, not sure of the names, but I know they're out there.

It is what it is
By goddessinspecs
50's story is exactly what he says it is, an autobiography of sorts. It gives the reader a glimpse at the circumstances that helped shape the man he is today. What I really enjoyed about this book was his honesty when it came to his emotions. If he was scared he said "I was scared", there was no fronting. He did not try to play the tough guy, he gave you the scenarios he was faced with and left it to the reader to form an opinion. I thought the story was refreshing in it's realness. People watch Scarface over and over again because it's a rush, well imagine if it were a true story and Tony Montana wrote a book, everyone would read it. I happen to have lived in Jamaica Queens and so I guess reading about that part of the "hood" made it even more interesting for me. I think the people that are mad that he is capitalizing off of his fame(especially if you live in America) are not thinking straight. America is the land of capitalization. What do you want him to do, only rap and that's it...why? If there is a demand for his story then it's his job as a business man to supply that demand, end of story. 50 has led an interesting life thus far and he gave us a taste of it. Don't get upset that he is doing well, be happy for him. Be happy that he is not shooting up the streets, be happy that he can make money through his law abiding talents. Anyway, to those interested in buying the book, I thought it was good over all and it felt like watching a movie, action sequences and all. If you want to see the movie when it comes out, buy or borrow the book so that you can get the scoop early and compare it to the movie.

Girls Like Us: Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon--and the Journey of a Generation, by Sheila Weller

A groundbreaking and irresistible biography of three of America’s most important musical artists—Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon—charts their lives as women at a magical moment in time.

Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon remain among the most enduring and important women in popular music. Each woman is distinct. Carole King is the product of outer-borough, middle-class New York City; Joni Mitchell is a granddaughter of Canadian farmers; and Carly Simon is a child of the Manhattan intellectual upper crust. They collectively represent, in their lives and their songs, a great swath of American girls who came of age in the late 1960s. Their stories trace the arc of the now mythic sixties generation—female version—but in a bracingly specific and deeply recalled way, far from cliché. The history of the women of that generation has never been written—until now, through their resonant lives and emblematic songs.

Filled with the voices of many dozens of these women's intimates, who are speaking in these pages for the first time, this alternating biography reads like a novel—except it’s all true, and the heroines are famous and beloved. Sheila Weller captures the character of each woman and gives a balanced portrayal enriched by a wealth of new information.

Girls Like Us is an epic treatment of midcentury women who dared to break tradition and become what none had been before them—confessors in song, rock superstars, and adventurers of heart and soul.

From Publishers Weekly
The epic story of three generational icons, this triple biography from author and Glamour senior editor Weller (Dancing at Ciro’s) examines the careers of singer-songwriters Carole King, Joni Mitchell and Carly Simon, whose success reflected, enervated and shaped the feminist movement that grew up with them. After short sketches of their early years, Weller begins in earnest with the 1960s, switching off among the women as their public lives begin. A time of extremes, the 60s found folk music and feminist cultures just beginning to define themselves, while the buttoned-down mainstream was still treating unwed pregnant women, in Mitchell’s terms, like you murdered somebody (thus the big, traditional wedding thrown for King, pregnant by songwriting partner Gerry Goffin, in 1959). Pioneering success in the music business led inevitably to similar roles in women’s movement, but Weller doesn’t overlook the content of their songs and the effect they have on a generation of women facing a lot more choice, but with no one to guide them. Taking readers in-depth through the late 80s, Weller brings the story up to date with a short but satisfying roundup. A must-read for any fan of these artists, this bio will prove an absorbing, eye-opening tour of rock (and American) history for anyone who’s appreciated a female musician in the past thirty years. Review
"Captivating. A strong amalgam of nostalgia, feminist history, astute insight, beautiful music and irresistible gossip. Weller's grand ambition winds up fulfilled." -- Janet Maslin, The New York Times

"Let's get one thing clear right from the start -- this is a fabulous book...Girls like Us unfolds with drama and panoramic detail. Written with a keen journalistic and, more importantly, female eye, [it] works as a healthy, long overdue counterweight to the endlessly repeated, male-sided version of rock 'n roll. Before these women broke the cultural sod during the rock 'n roll years, there were no girls like us. Now there are millions." -- Caitlin Moran, London Sunday Times

"Even at 500-plus pages, the book goes down as easy as a Grisham yarn on a vacation flight... The only flaw to Girls Like Us is that it comes to an end. Few people lead lives as action-packed and spiritually opulent as Carole King, Joni Mitchell and Carly Simon did during such intensely interesting times. And few writers are able to impart so much freight with such vigor. The towering triumvirate got what it deserves." -- The Toronto Sun

"A page-turner of the first order....a must read." -- The Boston Globe

"As an avid music reader, sometime reviewer, and teen of the '60s myself, I was sure I knew just about everything there was to know about Carole, Joni, and Carly.... But Girls Like Us, an ambitious collective biography by six-time author and magazine journalist Sheila Weller, showed me exactly how much I didn't know. This absorbing, well-reported book chronicles a time when women in all walks of life were exercising new-found freedom. And as icons of that era, nobody did it better." -- Christian Science Monitor

"Both scholarly and dishy. A superb journalist, Weller has managed to uncover a trove of unreported facts on her subjects." -- People **** (Pick of the Week)

"When we were little, and someone said, `I love chocolate pudding," there was always some nutball who'd ask, "Do you want to marry it?' Well, I love Sheila Weller's Girls Like Us so much that I would marry it. This lush, beautifully-researched and lyrically written biography of the three women whose music was emblematic of the generation who pioneered the way for me and so many others is literate, bold, charming and ... cuddly....[E]very page brought a fresh surprise. Weller raised the bar for this book above even a classy celebrity bio... This book probably gave me more pure enjoyment than any but a handful I've read in years. If you're passionate about music -- and about passion -- you'll have to hand it to Sheila Weller for a bravura composition of her own." --Jacquelyn Mitchard the bestselling author of Still Summer, Cage of Stars, and the first Oprah Book Club selection, The Deep End of the Ocean, on WritersAsReaders.com

"Incisive, painstakingly researched...Any woman who grew up during the late 1960s and '70s will fall head over heels for Sheila Weller's Girls Like Us." -- Ladies Home Journal

"A sharp-eyed vision of the worlds which nourished these ambitious, determined and singular artists...Weller digs deep into [Joni Mitchell's] complex psychology and provides as close to an understanding of this difficult figure as anyone is likely to ever offer. An unfailingly entertaining read...a riveting story." -- Mojo

"Juicy... I doubt I'll listen to Mitchell's songs again without considering the child she gave up for adoption... and her subsequent bouts with depression or hear the oft-married King's music without thinking of her tumultuous relationships. As for Simon, Weller captures fully both the richness and glamour of her romantic life and the profound sensitivity that made her especially vulnerable to ex-husband James Taylor's drug abuse and the cavalier charm of Warren Beatty." - USA Today

Brain candy for boomer women (and the men who want to understand them)
By Jesse Kornbluth
525 pages about Carole King, Joni Mitchell and Carly Simon --- and this is my candidate for "beach book of 2008" for smart boomer women?

I'm not kidding. It's that good. And that addictive.

Just read the opening section about 14-year-old Carole Klein, sitting with her friend Camille Cacciatore as they leaf through the Brooklyn phone book in search of a name. Kick...Kiel...Klip. How about King? Yeah, King. And then it was off to Camille's house, where the choice was spaghetti-and-meatballs or peppers-and-onions.

Anyone can use clips and rumor to write about the famous. Sheila Weller puts you in the room. Her methods are exhaustive journalism --- she's written six books, she's won prizes, she's the real deal --- and empathy. So the path from nowhere to immortality for King, Mitchell and Simon is an epic tale, and Weller's scope is vast --- to track "the journey of a generation." Only on the surface is this a book about music, and who makes it, and how, and why. The bigger subject, the better subject, is how women found their way in their professional and personal lives, 1960-now. So, for Weller, these stories are about "a course of self-discovery, change, and unhappy confrontation with the limits of change."

Limits?

Consider this: In 1960, H.W. Janson's "History of Art" --- the standard textbook --- cited 2,300 artists.

How many were female?

Not one.

That's the culture these women were entering. Women as decorative armpieces. As silent helpers. Sexual objects. And uncomplaining victims.

Each of these women fought that culture. Not because she wanted to --- simply out of biography and necessity. Joan Anderson gets polio as a kid, and her creativity is pushed inward. Carly Simon may be the daughter of one of the founders of Simon & Schuster, but in her case "privileged" refers mostly to her father, who banished his kids from his sight when he came home from work. Carol King writes hits with a kid in her lap.

There's delicious dish in these pages. Sailing to New York on the U.S.S. United States, Sean Connery propositioning both Carly and her sister Lucy. [Lucy accepted his offer --- alone.] Carole meeting the Beatles. [They were thrilled.] Joni being spanked by her husband and, later, getting smacked around by Jackson Browne. Carly getting it on in cabs, under a bridge in Central Park, and, minutes after meeting James Taylor, in a bathroom.

Everyone of import in the history of rock appears in these pages. Men come and go, most of them hideously inappropriate. And then there's the --- shall we say --- cross-pollination. Give James Taylor the sword of gold; he befriended King and did a lot more with Mitchell and Simon. Messy stuff, all of it, and revealing about the way relationships play out in the superstar set. My favorite moment: decades after "You're So Vain", Warren Beatty came up --- and on --- to Carly at the Carlyle Hotel. "What are you doing in town?" he asked. "Seeing my oncologist," said Carly, who was then afflicted with cancer. Guess Warren's reaction.

They're grandmothers now. Hard to believe. I still want to see them as they were --- young and shiny, the future rich in possibility. This book charts the price they paid, the pain and the foolishness. It's a splendid chance for women of a certain age --- and the men who love them --- to look back and grid their own lives over these years.

Which makes for a terrific beach book.

No Secrets
By Kevin Killian
Everything in GIRLS LIKE US will be amazingly familiar to those of us born in the bay boom, and yet Sheila Weller, a talented if erratic prose stylist, brings us to emotional places that will be new to all but those most intimate with the trio of songwriters whose lives, she declares, form a "journey of a generation." I don't know if I'd go that far, but I'm not a woman, and Weller's argument is that King, Simon, and Mitchell pushes back the barriers for women specifically, "one song at a time."

The cryptic one remains Carole King, whom Weller just can't illuminate in any meaningful way. Her life was amazing--up to a point, then it stopped being of any interest at all, which is a shame. We hear again and again how she wrote all those Brill Building masterpieces before she was 21, and broke down under the strain of a troubled marriage to a high-stakes husband and lyricist, Gerry Goffin, coming out the other end with an LP. Tapestry, that everyone loved. Then what happened? Bad men galore, attracted to her wealth. She once estimated that every time she divorced a man, it cost her a million dollars. Weller gives us all the facts ad nauseam but we always wonder, why did King do this to herself?

Carly Simon, on the other hand, who cooperated with Weller extensively or so it seems, comes off as nearly normal. Of the upper, upper middle class, Simon was to the manor born and the icy, plangent chords of her first song, "That's the Way I Always Heard It Should Be," gave notice that the old New Yorker fiction writers of the 40s and 50s hadn't died, they had just rolled over and told Carly Simon the news. Though obviously spoiled and cosseted by her own wealth, Simon doesn't seem spoiled; her reactions throughout, even meeting and marrying the drug-zombie James Taylor, are always understandable and sympathetic.

Joni Mitchell isn't sympathetic per se, but she has the integrated personality of the genius totally in love with herself and obsessed with her own reflection, so she's great in a special way. Weller pokes amused fun at Mitchell's vanity and enormous self-esteem, but we get the picture that, in her opinion at any rate, Mitchell actually is pretty f--ing amazing. Does our society have it in for women who want to be artists? Mitchell's encounter with the aged, reclusive Georgia O'Keeffe seems like a emblem of a certain baton-passing, as is Carly Simon's relationship with former First Lady Jackie Kennedy. Weller is OK about male-female relationships, but in this book at any rate she's more interested in the ways women deal with each other.

It's nearly a biography of five people, not just three, as there is so much about James Taylor you will never need to read another word about him if you have this book on your shelf; and for some reason there's tons of material about Judy Collins. I wonder if Weller proposed a book with King, Mitchell, Simon, and Collins, and some editorial board nixed the addition of Collins--but there was so much good material about Collins, Weller kept it in anyhow. She is the Vanity Fair writer supreme, whose motto is that no sentence is complete without some action and punch, and the best way to get that is to string along many words with hyphens to invent new forms of adjectival excitement. You won't be able to read for more than a few minutes without being hit on the head by Weller's mad stylings--here's a typical hyphenfilled sentence about the Eagles: "Their at-home-in-Death-Valley image and bleating-lost-boy-in-expensive-boots sound had become era-definingly successful." (Ten hyphens in a mere 20 words! Sheila Weller is era-definingly successful at inventing a new form of writing--like the classic circus act when a small VW would pull up to center ring and then clown after clown would prance out. Then more clowns--then still more. She's pretty amazing and GIRLS LIKE US is a book that, for all its flaws, convinces us roundly in its larger arguments and dazzles with its wide-ranging portraits of artistic life in the 50s, 60s and 70s.

Why Carole, Joni and Carly Still Matter
By Ed Uyeshima
My immediate thought when I read this comprehensive three-fold biography was Allison Anders' evocative but episodic 1996 Grace of My Heart, a fictionalized biopic of Carole King's career in the 1960's. Similar to the approach taken with the movie, author Sheila Weller covers more than the music of the times but also the constraining era in which they all came of age. When King, Joni Mitchell and Carly Simon were growing up (they were born within four years of each other), women were either placed in traditional homemaker roles or relegated to a cultural abyss if they dared to pursue artistic professions. In an often dishy but nonetheless enlightening book, Weller does an admirable job surveying the times when these three singer-songwriters first emerged and crossed paths on their way to popular mainstream success.

Their backgrounds could not be more different. King was a middle-class Brooklyn native who grew up listening to classical music and Broadway show tunes, while Mitchell was a dyed-in-the-wool bohemian poet who moved from the Canadian prairies to Greenwich Village and later Laurel Canyon. Born in privilege to a family ensconced in publishing (Simon & Schuster), Simon was a rich girl who went the folk singer route with her older sister Lucy. Even though each persevered against the going mindset and managed professional success on a measured level (and in King's case, quite a portfolio of Brill Building hits co-written with first husband Gerry Goffin), each ultimately created a work that provided a turning point in their careers. King had 1971's mega-selling Tapestry, Mitchell had 1971's intensely personal Blue, and Simon had 1972's No Secrets featuring her signature song about a former lover, "You're So Vain". The author documents all this with relish and delves into the inspirations for their music.

The dishier parts of the book deal with the women's checkered love lives. King married four times, while Mitchell and Simon each went through a succession of liaisons that obviously shaped many of their compositions. Aside from the tawdry impact of Warren Beatty's legendary womanizing, James Taylor appears to be the common intersection as he befriended King (and turned her epochal song, "You've Got a Friend" into a Grammy Award-winning hit), had an extended affair with Mitchell and eventually married Simon for eleven turbulent, drug-filled years. However, all three have weathered the storm of their personal lives and the ever-changing tastes of the public to become grandmothers and songsmiths for another generation. Weller writes in true baby boomer fashion with an alternating sense of reverence and ribaldry about three icons deserving of such a tribute.

I bought three
By Meredith Hobbs Lund
After purchasing Karmel's Top 100 Baby Purees, I plunged in for three Finger Foods- one for me (grandma) my daughter (9 mo old) and my daughter-in-law (6 month old). I think these recipes are great, and I will be more than happy to purchase greek-sytle yogurt (more protein, no fat) and leeks. A lot of the recipes- I do have the ingredients on hand. I plan to make a lot of these for my HUSBAND - started with the sweet potato parsnip crisps. My son in law made the tortilla pizzas the day they received the book. I love the side bar that states preparation time, cook time, servings, if "suitable for children under 1" and if "suitable for freezing". I want to make the mozzarella sticks after my next grocery trip. I'm happy!

Good recipes, but more for older kids.
By Shannon Hogan
I purchased this book when my baby was around a year old and I was trying to come up with new ideas to feed to her. To me Finger Foods suggested small children, but most of the recipes in this book are more for 4 years old and up. (I've actually cooked a lot of the recipes just for Mom and Dad.) So if you are looking for a family cookbook, this is a good one...but not so much for toddlers.

Good food, but requires a lot of ingredients and time
By Jen
I have made a few recipes from this book and they have all turned out surprisingly good, plus my son enjoys them. However, a majority of the recipes do require a lot of time and ingredients to make, so it is not practical for every day use when you are a busy mom. I will maybe make something from this book once a month. Here is my general overview of the book

Pros:
- Tasty recipes - everything I have tried so far has turned out good. It is food I would eat and my son enjoys the food (however, to be honest, he is not a picky eater)
- Provides a lot of good ideas - I really like to use it as a guide on ideas of foods to make for my toddler now, more than a recipe book.
- Well organized - book is divided into sections based on type of food (fish, snacks, chicken, meat, sweet treats, etc)
- Corner of each page shows a basic overview of important info for the recipe (e.g., "suitable for children under the age of 1", "suitable for freezing", "suitable for reheating", etc)

Cons:
- A lot of time and ingredients required - many recipes have more than 5 ingredients, many seem to have 10 or more, so making food from the book does become time consuming
- Only a handful of ingredients are "suitable for children under the age of 1" - just an FYI if you are looking for recipes for your 9 month old.
- A lot of the recipes involve frying/pan frying/sauteing in oil - However, I have baked several of them rather than frying and the results have been good.

By Bob B
I retired from this organization a while back. Being a Pharmacist, I always admired "Merck" and even more so after I worked for them. The Home Edition is more easily understood by non-medical folks than the straight up "Merck Manual" (my opinion). Same info pretty much but in lay folks terms. Lots of great info on a plethora of topics. A must have for folks that do survival type activities.

1500 pages of information, not watered down!
By ChristineMM
This reference book is easy to use and understand. When I first leaned of this home edition version of the Merck manual I was hesitant. Over the years many books have been published that are medical in nature, some published by doctors, but the content is watered down or so vague that a layperson doesn't derive much information from it. Some books are actually condescending in attitude, some patronizing. So many books briefly skim symptoms and then caution to call a physician for more information.
Recently my son was diagnosed on the phone by our pediatrician with chicken pox and it was made clear that they did not want to see him for a physical exam. I was given a tiny bit of information by the office staff but was still curious for more information. I spent over an hour surfing the Internet looking for information but found watered down information, repeated many times over on multiple websites, including some written by physicians intended for laypeople to use. I looked at my parenting books written by doctors (one titled "The Portable Pediatrician", no less) and was still lacking any substantial information. When I consulted the Merck Manual home edition, (which I had forgotten I bought recently and had not yet used), I was surprised at the level of information given. There are many details that I had not found elsewhere, such as number of days from exposure to outbreak, how long it takes the pox to change from first appearance to crusted over, about how long the infection lasts, and treatment suggestions. Reasons why some children have a mild outbreak vs. a severe outbreak were even provided, something I had not found anywhere else.
The information here is not dumbed down in that it is not so vague that it is not useful. There is a lot of information here but it is written in a style for the layperson to understand. I appreciated the writing style, which presents information to the non-physician without putting on airs.
Anyone who, like me, prefers to gather information and learn about things rather than making a call or office visit to their doctor to get just one opinion will appreciate owning this book. At about 1500 pages it covers many illnesses and ailments. If you are interested in this book I suggest you buy it so that you have it at your fingertips 24 hours a day, for whatever may arise. I am not suggesting this take the place of a doctor, but I know from working with physicians that there are certain calls that are non-emergent in nature that are not appreciated when the office is closed!
If you are looking for a book about children's ailments that encompasses not only western medicine but lists an array of other treatment methods, I suggest Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child: A Practical A-To-Z Reference to Natural and Conventional Treatments for Infants and Children by Janet Zand. I found this to be an excellent companion to the Merck manual, home edition. The Merck manual gives more information about the disease or ailment itself through a Western medicine viewpoint while the Zand's books' specialty is sharing treatment options grouped by category (herbal, homeopathic, western, etc.).

An awesome book...a must have!
By Anoop Ghanwani
This book is great. It describes all of the medical jargon associated with various illnesses including advanced, hard to understand, diseases. Since buying it, I've used the book to understand various conditions including one that my mother recently developed. It's very up to date in describing medical science's understanding of various illnesses, and it provides a solid foundation upon which you can start doing more research on the web for the condition that you may be interested in finding about. A note in the book says that it is produced by Merck & Co. on a non-for-profit basis. An online version of the book is available at the Merck website.
