My Love for Eric
By Mama P
Gaston made Eric out to be a non-productive monster and he blamed Eric for Christine Daae's double mindedness. It was Christine that had to choose in the end,NOT Eric. I agree with Mr. Webber that Eric(the phantom) was a very powerful, creative passionate tragic Lover. Who loved Christine despite her betraying him. He loved her so much that he knelt down asking if she really loved him. Eric will always be my best friend & confidant because of him operating in the Supernatural power of his God given giftings. Despite the infection on the side of his face. Gaston kept using horribly ugly - he is wrong
because to me & my friends horribly ugly is the Orks & goblins in Lord of the Rings Not Eric!

The Phantom of the Opera
By Pauline Manolo
The fist time I heard about The Phantom of the Opera it was about the 2004 film. I know that some people might argue and say the the play is much better than the film but there wasn't any play near my area so I had to content myself with the film. And quite frankly, this is the type of The Phantom of the Opera that I grew up with and would always be my favorite. Forward a few years, I find myself again quite obsessed with this play that I listen to the movie soundtrack, watch videos of the play, interviews of Andrew Lloyd Webber up to the point where I figured to read the book. I wanted to read the original version in French but that'll be for sometime until I can find a copy so it's this copy instead.

The play is popular and there are a lot of people who already know the story. When I read the book, it was the same for me. I didn't make any expectations because I already know the story - I thought I know the story. I wasn't scared of how the Phantom looked as I've read that Lachney's version of the phantom in the 1925 silent movie is similar to the book. But here are a few thoughts I have while reading.

- I have never thought Christine to be quite so .... theathrical. Well, she is a ballet dancer and then a singer so I know it is to be expected but she sound so wishy-washy. She likes Raoul but she stays with the Phantom. Although as I come to the end of the book, I sort of understand her.

- Raoul is young and irrational. Whenever Christine refuses to acknowledge him, he weeps or cries. It isn't a very manly thing to do.

- Erik, now I am petrified of him. With the movie and with movie, his voice is so beguiling that I want to listen to him sing forever. But in the book, there are no songs and the things he did are explained in detail up to the flying death's head. Reading this book at night, I glanced every minute around me just to make that there are no flying death's head lurking.

- Then there's a character known as the Persian that I wish was included in the play but that's okay if he isn't. He is similar to Mme. Giry in the play where he explain the story of the phantom.

Was I disappointed? No, this is a classic book and the words written on its pages still lives and adored by people. It might be a bit upsetting at the first to me because I got used to the play but this is a nice insight on where the play was inspired. This came first before the play and for this story to be turned into a play then Mr. Lloyd Webber must have found some sort of magic on this book. The play is undoubtedly good but if you want you to know the origins of the play, then read this book.

A classic that never gets old
By M. Patient
This is one of those stories that is such a classic that it gets periodic remakes in every medium. It's been retold in books (Susan Kay), masterfully parodied (Terry Pratchett), turned into a movie, a musical, you name it.

Despite his inhuman visage, Erik's tortured tale of love and suffering speaks to us all.

This is also one of the oldest books I know of to employ the "I am a researcher presenting my notes and interviews about events that really happened" plot device, and it carries that off well too, particularly as it helps to preserve some of the mystery surrounding Erik.

Tales of the Slayer: v. 4 (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), by Michael Reaves

The fourth volume of short stories chronicles the Cruciamentum -- the ordeal each Slayer must undergo when she turns 18. Designed to test her innermost resources and prove that she has the courage and the steadfastness to take on the role of the Slayer to the full, the Cruciamentum is a life-or-death struggle, administered under the guidance of the Watchers Council. The Slayer is deprived -- without her prior knowledge -- of her supernatural strength, and pitted against a deadly foe with only her wits and her self-reliance to save her. Buffy's own test, against the psychotic vampire Kralik, enthralled viewers in the TV episode Helpless. Now Tales of the Slayer Volume Four reveals how Slayers through the ages have had to call on all their reserves of imagination and resourcefulness to survive their time of trial.

A great compendum for a timeless show!
By Matthew J. Schimpf
What M*A*S*H did for the large, looming distractions and inhumanities of war, Everybody Loves Raymond (ELR) did for the common everyday occurrences of turn-of-the-century family life in western civilization (and perhaps beyond.) The beauty of ELR is that it wasn't a show that simply went for the laugh (although there were/are plenty of those) but it dealt more with the foibles and eccentricities of the human being in a family situation with all it's myriad complexities and turmoil. I suspected that every part of the production process of ELR was done with great care and attention to detail, so that the subtleties of human rapport can be exposed; and this tremendous album bares-out that suspicion. The remarkable chemistry betwixt and between cast, writers, crew is clearly illuminated in the show and in this book as well.

Wouldn't it be great if say, 10 years from now, after the Barones have experienced the trials and tribulations of aging and deceased parents, raising teenagers and maybe some career changes that the cast would pick up where they left off with "Everybody Still Loves Raymond?" Let us pray........

Deception Point, by Dan Brown

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Da Vinci Code comes an explosive, high-tech thriller that takes readers from the chilling depths of the Arctic Ocean to the treacherous heights of Washington power.
When a new NASA satellite spots evidence of an astonishingly rare object buried deep in the Arctic ice, the floundering space agency proclaims a much-needed victory...a victory that has profound implications for U.S. space policy and the impending presidential election. With the Oval Office in the balance, the President dispatches White House Intelligence analyst Rachel Sexton to the Milne Ice Shelf to verify the authenticity of the find. Accompanied by a team of experts, including the charismatic academic Michael Tolland, Rachel uncovers the unthinkable: evidence of scientific trickery -- a bold deception that threatens to plunge the world into controversy.
But before Rachel can contact the President, she and Michael are attacked by a deadly team of assassins controlled by a mysterious power broker who will stop at nothing to hide the truth. Fleeing for their lives in an environment as desolate as it is lethal, their only hope for survival is to find out who is behind this masterful ploy. The truth, they will learn, is the most shocking deception of all.
In Deception Point, bestselling author Dan Brown transports readers from the ultrasecret National Reconnaissance Office to the towering ice shelves of the Arctic Circle, and back again to the hallways of power inside the West Wing. Heralded for masterfully intermingling science, history, and politics in his critically acclaimed, blockbuster thrillers Angels & Demons and The Da Vinci Code, Brown has crafted a novel in which nothing is as it seems -- and behind every corner is a stunning surprise. Deception Point is pulse-pounding fiction at its best.

Amazon.com Review
Penzler Pick, December 2001: In the world of page-turning thrillers, Dan Brown holds a special place in the hearts of many of us. After his first book, Digital Fortress, almost passed me by, he wrote Angels and Demons, which was probably one of the half-dozen most exciting thrillers of last year. It is a pleasure to report that his new book lives up to his reputation as a writer whose research and talent make his stories exciting, believable, and just plain unputdownable.

The time is now and President Zachary Herney is facing a very tough reelection. His opponent, Senator Sedgwick Sexton, is a powerful man with powerful friends and a mission: to reduce NASA's spending and move space exploration into the private sector. He has numerous supporters, including many beyond the businesses who will profit from this because of the embarrassment of 1996, when the Clinton administration was informed by NASA that proof existed of life on other planets. That information turned out to be premature, if not incorrect. (This story is true; I repeat, Dan Brown's research is very, very good.) The embattled president is assured that a rare object buried deep in the Arctic ice will prove to have far-reaching implications on America's space program. The find, however, needs to be verified.

Enter Rachel Sexton, a gister for the National Reconnaissance Office. Gisters reduce complex reports into single-page briefs, and in this case the president needs that confirmation before he broadcasts to the nation, probably ensuring his reelection. It's tricky because Rachel is the daughter of his opponent. Rachel is thrilled to be on the team traveling to the Arctic circle. She is a realist about her father's politics and has little respect for his stand on NASA, but Senator Sexton cannot help but have a problem with her involvement.

Adventure, romance, murder, skullduggery, and nail-biting tension ensue. By the end of Deception Point, the reader will be much better informed about how our space program works and how our politicians react to new information. Bring on the next Dan Brown thriller! --Otto Penzler

From Publishers Weekly
Struggling to rebound from a series of embarrassing blunders that have jeopardized its political life at the start of this lively thriller, NASA makes an astounding discovery: there is a meteor embedded deep within the arctic ice. And it isn't just any meteor. Inside the huge rock, which crashed to earth in 1716, are fossils of giant insects proof of extraterrestrial life. Yet, given NASA's slipping reputation, the question arises: Is the meteor real or a fake? That uncertainty dogs NASA and its supporters in Brown's latest page-flipper, a finely polished amalgam of action and intrigue. Trying to determine the truth are intelligence agent Rachel Sexton and popular oceanographer Michael Tolland, both among the first to suspect something is amiss when the meteor is pulled from the ice. Their doubts quickly make them the targets of a mysterious death squad controlled by someone or something that doesn't want the public to hear the meteor may be a fraud. Together, Sexton and Tolland scramble across arctic glaciers, take refuge on ice floes, are rescued by a nuclear submarine, then find themselves trapped aboard a small research vessel off the coast of New Jersey. All the while, the nation's capital is buzzing as to whether NASA has engaged in deception. Or is NASA just a dupe for aerospace companies that have long wanted a bigger share of space contracts? Brown (Angels & Demons) moves into new territory with his latest. It's an excellent thriller a big yet believable story unfolding at breakneck pace, with convincing settings and just the right blend of likable and hateful characters. He's also done his research, folding in sophisticated scientific and military details that make his plot far more fulfilling than the norm.

From Library Journal
Brown's dazzling high-tech adventure opens with NASA personnel making a startling discovery. An ancient meteorite is found buried within an Arctic glacier. Samples taken from this meteorite reveal that it contains fossils from life forms not previously seen on Earth. Could this discovery prove that we are not alone in the universe? To answer that question, several civilian scientists are dispatched to the site in order to investigate the origin of the fossils and verify NASA's findings. Before any official announcement can be made, however, one of the scientists dies under mysterious circumstances. The remaining scientists quickly realize that all is not what it appears to be as they struggle to separate truth from deceit. With this latest story, Brown (Digital Fortress) proves once again that he is among the most intelligent and dynamic of authors in the thriller genre. He has skillfully blended his own wit and style with the rip-roaring adventure of Cussler and the modern technology of Clancy. Highly recommended for all public libraries. Jeff Ayers, Seattle P.L.

OUT IN THE COLD WITH NO PLACE TO HIDE
By Sharon Wrisley
Like all of Dan Brown's books, Deception Point is filled with characters who are not always who they profess to be, with agendas that are not what we would hope they would be, and who are definitely more deceitful than our wildest nightmares could possibly imagine. This book was one of those kinds of books. Dan Brown didn't miss a chance to pit his characters against the elements of nature, technology, and each other to create a story that was quite believable in the times in which we live, although you find yourself hoping that these events are not unfolding as you are drawn through each thrilling moment of the bone chilling action surrounding these characters lives. The action moves swiftly along, with the reader being carried, unprepared, into the frozen wasteland of the arctic and finally being set down in an even more turbulent setting where people they trusted and thought were on their side turn out to be the enemy. Thrilling and thought provoking. Hard to put it down.

"Dan Brown Has Missed His Target"
By Nancy L. Silk, Author/Reviewer
I've been a Dan Brown fan since reading his first two awesome novels. But this one, just could not grab me. Too much science jargon, not enough easy reading suspense and excitement. This story is about political deception of trying to deface the president through false information. It deals with a NASA satellite disclosing a rare object buried deep in the Arctic ice. The current candidate for the POTUS position wants no funding to go to NASA, but to have it managed by independent scientific conglomerates. Before I read 50 percent of this story, I wanted to delete it. But, I stayed with it scanning out the mundane stuff and only reading what interested me. I don't think the author is on my favorites list anymore. This novel was very frustrating and disappointing.

but that reveal drags out for so long it's kind of boring. Also
By A. Reeve
Deception Point is part political thriller, part science/military adventure set in the (broadly) current day. I would say some of the twists are a little predictable - there's one point in particular where the identity of a mystery person is being revealed, and it's obvious it's not who you're supposed to think it is, but that reveal drags out for so long it's kind of boring. Also, some of the situations the protagonists find themselves in, and somehow manage to survive, stretch the limits of my disbelief. But if you can put that aside and just go with it, it's fun and entertaining.

A Dash of Daring: Carmel Snow and Her Life In Fashion, Art, and Letters, by Penelope Rowlands

Carmel Snow lived larger than life - she dressed to perfection, was fond of dramatic pronouncements, and had a savage passion for discovering creative genius. It is fitting, then, that her career at the helm of Harper's Bazaar forever changed the face of fashion magazine publishing. Early in the twentieth century, when the typical fashion magazine was narrowly concerned with dressing well, Snow's progressive editorial vision included art, fiction, photography and reportage. Along the way, she launched the careers of would-be legends, including Andy Warhol, Lauren Bacall, Truman Capote and Christian Dior. "A Dash of Daring" chronicles the extraordinary life of Carmel Snow on both sides of the Atlantic, beginning in nineteenth-century Ireland and continuing on to Paris, Milan and New York City, the fashion capitals of the world. Overflowing with previously untold stories of the colourful and glamorous - including Richard Avedon, Andre Leon Talley, Diana Vreeland, Virginia Woolf, Aldous Huxley, and the members of the legendary Algonquin Round Table - "A Dash of Daring" is a compelling portrait of the fashion world during a golden era.

From Publishers Weekly
From her perch as editor-in-chief of Harper's Bazaar from 1932 to 1957, Carmel Snow (1887–1961) defined fashion for hundreds of thousands of American women for a quarter century. Her apprenticeship in fashion journalism began when Condé Nast hired her at Vogue in 1922. Jumping ship a decade later to work for Nast's rival, Hearst's Bazaar, Snow set out to redefine the fashion magazine to include anything—fiction, diets, theater reviews, politics—of interest to a fashionable woman. To give Bazaar a unique and arresting visual style, she hired layout artist Alexei Brodovitch, plus a succession of innovative photographers: Man Ray, Munkasci, Dahl-Wolfe, Avedon. For verbal flair, Snow hired the always outrageous Diana Vreeland, and commissioned works from creative artists like Truman Capote and Andy Warhol. Rowlands, who freelances for the fashion press, is great at explaining the fashion world—the rise and fall of key designers, or the significance of various styles. But she's clearly uncomfortable exploring Snow's personal side; the editor never emerges as a flesh-and-blood woman until the last chapters, when she's being unwillingly retired from Bazaar. Still, this lavishly illustrated and entertainingly informative fashion bio is "must" reading for the W set. Photos.

From The New Yorker
In 1920, the thirty-three-year-old Carmel Snow was whisked from her mother's high-society dressmaking shop to be assistant fashion editor at Vogue. In 1932, she defected to Harper's Bazaar, and presided there until 1957, becoming an industry legend (she received the Légion d'Honneur for her support of French couture). Snow not only spotted trends but created them, using the magazine to boost designers such as Balenciaga, styles like the sack dress, and talents from Richard Avedon to Truman Capote. Rowlands's finely researched biography is a frothy read—like leafing through decades' worth of fashion magazines—but Snow, however charming, had a darker side: she was ruthless in pursuit of her goals, largely ignored her society husband and docile daughters, and drank prodigiously. When in Paris, it was said, she lived on "martinis, French pastries, and vitamin B injections."

A Bazaar Life
By Veronique Vienne
When you crack open a 500 page book, it better be good. This biography of Harper's Bazaar fashion editor Carmel Snow is everything a heavy tome should be: entertaining, insightful, and thouroughly researched. The writing style is a perfect match for the subject matter: Penelope Rowlands' prose is as sharply defined as a couture garment, and, as a result, reading her book is the next best thing to actually owning a Dior original.

But the most rewarding part of the book is the revelation that elegance is all about gutsiness. In fact, if you look objectively at the clothes women wore back then (the book is rife with photographic documents) all those proper little wool suits and belted silk dresses look quite frumpy in restrospect. But what poise those girls had! Where did their get their attitude? Reading A Dash of Daring is a lesson in real coolness.

A Dash of Delight
By Ms. Parker
This is a handsomely produced book, filled with wonderful photos, about a fascinating woman, the daughter of an Irish immigrant, who traveled the major capitals of the world and transformed Harper's Bazaar into one of the liveliest magazines of the 20th century. Clearly and elegantly written, the book is rife with wonderful anecdotes about major designers, writers, artists, movie stars, and grand eccentrics. Snow's was an extraordinary life, and Rowlands does it full justice while giving us a detailed portrait of the fashion world during its golden age.

The Cold Equations, by Tom Godwin

Tom Godwin's story "The Cold Equations" rocked the science fiction world when it appeared. A pilot is on an emergency mission to a planet whose colony is doomed if he doesn't reach them. He has just enough fuel to get there - then he finds he has a stowaway, a young girl wanting to be with her brother on the colony. If the pilot jettisons her through the airlock, the ship will barely make it to a landing on the planet. If he does not, the ship will crash and both of them as well as the colony will die. What will he do? Also in this volume are other, unforgettable stories by Godwin, including his full - length novel Space Prison, which poses another problem in survival: if hostile aliens have marooned you and hundreds of other people on a nearly uninhabitable planet, how do you manage not only to endure, but to get revenge? A large volume by a master of science fiction adventure with an extra dimension of speculation.

A 40 Year Old Nightmare
By Stephen Breden
I discovered this book in the early 1960's at the time I was mostly sustaining myself on Heinlein and his more upbeat proliferation of classic science fiction. The centerpiece of "Cold Equations" is actually not the title work, but the included novel "The Survivors", included in this volume of Godwin's works. Known in the early 60's as "Space Prison", this novel relates the 200 year long saga of a group of humans relegated to a planet after being attacked by barbarians during a space journey near the planet Ragnarok. Fully half of the thousands of colonists aboard this ship are relegated to this planet, declared uninhabitable by prior explorers (the other half is taken into slavery). Ragnarok is noted for its 1.5 G gravity, and the collection of ferocious beasts inhabiting it. On the first night alone, 200 of the colonists are killed. At the low point, the colony is reduced to only 49 individuals, before the group finally learns to adapt to the harsh conditions and to thrive and start to grow in numbers again.
The novel is a mixture of desperation and total hopelessness coupled with incredible yet believable examples of humankind's efforts to survive and succeed under incredible adversity. The story is very haunting, and finally ends when descendants of the original group of colonists escape from the planet.
I can think of only a handful of science fiction books that have stayed with me 40 years later after only a single reading, and I have occasionally looked for a copy, only finding old collectibles as a source. I could not have been more pleased when I found it had finally been reprinted only last month: I ordered it on the spot and await reading it again with great anticipation and sharing it with my 17 year old son.

There's a reason the title story is so acclaimed
By oldpink
I had read the story that gave this compilation its title back in junior high school, and it has haunted me ever since.
So, when I found an entire compilation of stories from this great writer, I jumped at it.
Rereading the story "The Cold Equations" all these years later reminded me of the power of Godwin to keep his audience spellbound, unable to stop until the end, which I will not spoil here.
This story is so famous that, for decades, it has sparked controversy and lengthy debates, some due to claims of Godwin having "borrowed" the story from an earlier comic book, and some due to mathematicians and physicists questioning the central dreadful dilemma of the story.
It really is a measure of greatness that (the late) Tom Godwin to this day has a story of such power and fascination that people are still talking about it, over forty years after he published it.
Kudos to Amazon for the speedy service, too.

Classic SF Substance
By A Customer
When I was a pre-teen I once found myself restricted to my Uncle's farm for two weeks. I couldn't leave the yard, investigate the farm buildings, and there was no TV. The single redeeming feature of the two week experience was the book, The Survivors, in this collection of stories by Godwin. My Uncle was a voracious reader of SF and never let any of his books go - he had thousands. I read several during that two weeks, but this one - only this one I remember. Unfortunately, I remembered the wrong title (Prison Planet) and could never find it again. I reread it recently for the first time in about 40 years. Although the technology is classic 1950's SF and seems dated today, the story's view of how people fit into the universe had a big impact on me then. I appreciated the chance to revisit this long lost book and read for the first time Godwin's other stories included in this collection.
To the teens who might be attracted to the nicely posed young thing on the cover- she's nowhere to be found inside. This book was written in the 1950's after all. Still, if you like classic SF, you'll like this book.

Grade 9 Up—Charles Dickens's classic tale of one family's suffering during the French Revolution is brought to life in this audio adaptation. The voice of Audie Award-winning narrator Simon Vance sets the tone for the characters and creates the Dickensesqe mood of the times when the rich and the poor were far apart and no one was exempt from the ensuing wrath during the Revolution. Vance's stone varies from soothing to animated while creating different voices for the characters and using appropriate accents. A bonus feature on the last CD is an e-book in pdf format that can be printed or used as a read-along while listening to the audio. This easily navigated feature would be particularly helpful for struggling readers.—Jeana Actkinson, Bridgeport High School, TX

Review
[A Tale of Two Cities] has the best of Dickens and the worst of Dickens: a dark, driven opening, and a celestial but melodramatic ending; a terrifyingly demonic villainess and (even by Dickens standards) an impossibly angelic heroine. Though its version of the French Revolution is brutally simplified, its engagement with the immense moral themes of rebirth and terror, justice, and sacrifice gets right to the heart of the matter . . . For every reader in the past hundred and forty years and for hundreds to come, it is an unforgettable ride. from the Introduction by Simon Schama --abc

Fraudulent Advertising
By Galen Heneghan
I did not realize that, to avoid being scammed, it was necessary to read a complete description of this product, including customer reviews, before purchasing. This book, listed as a paperback version of A Tale of Two Cities, is, in fact, a "retelling", I suppose for children! What an unscrupulous seller! There is an obvious intent to mislead here. Beware is right! Don't buy from this seller!

Amazing novel, but font too small on this book
By coloradostevie
The novel is great, this is not a review of the novel. This particular book/product is the paperback from Barnes and Noble classics. I really appreciated the intro which includes the history surrounding the time of the novel. However, the print of this book is very small; I usually don't have problems with font size in books, but this is significantly small...tiny.

Such a good story
By M. Heiss
I love this story.

I'm a read aloud mom with a family of boys, and they LOVED this story! Very enthusiastic listening.

The thing with Dickens is all the characters are people. Every one is a portrait and a caricature at the same time. My kids drew while I read this aloud to them.

A great story about the misery inflicted by the politics of revenge. Still apt today.

This edition is not high quality. The paper is very bad and the ink stinks.
