Bigfoot!: The True Story of Apes in America, by Loren Coleman

For years, scientists and researchers have studied, speculated about, and searched for an enigmatic creature that is legendary in the annals of American folklore. Now, learn the truth about...
BIGFOOT!
In this fascinating and comprehensive look at the fact, fiction, and fable of the North American "Sasquatch," award-winning author Loren Coleman takes readers on a journey into America's biggest mystery -- could an unrecognized "ape" be living in our midst? Drawing on over forty years of investigations, interviews, and fieldwork on these incredible beasts, Coleman explores the modern debates about these powerful, ape-like creatures, why they have remained a mystery for so long, and what we can learn about ourselves from these animals, our nearest cousins!
From reports of Bigfoot's existence found in ancient Native American traditions, to the controversial Patterson-Gimlin film of a Bigfoot in the wild, to today's Internet sites that record the sightings almost as soon as they occur, Coleman uncovers the past, explains the present, and considers the future of one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in the natural world.

It really is too bad that one specific inappropriate review has been left up here. Of course, I, Loren Coleman have done fieldwork (in 49 states of the USA, Canada & Mexico), interviewed hundreds of eyewitnesses, and spent long hours in libraries and archival files discovering the material that went into this book and the others I've written. A few folks would rather deal in spreading mistruths about personalities than untaking the difficult zoological hunt for Bigfoot. So be it. It is part of the story of this field, sadly.

New York Times bestselling author Carol Higgins Clark's trademark light touch, humor, and quirky characters make for another wonderfully unpredictable mystery. Say "Aloha" to an unforgettable Hawaiian adventure!

L.A.-based private detective Regan Reilly gets a call from her best gal pal, urging her to come to Hawaii for one last girls' weekend before Regan ties the knot with Jack "no relation" Reilly, and so she happily packs her bags.

At the Waikiki Waters Playground and Resort, the body of Dorinda Dawes, the hotel's gossipy PR woman, washes ashore wearing a valuable lei that once belonged to a Hawaiian princess and was stolen from a museum in Honolulu thirty years ago.

The resort manager doesn't believe that Dorinda drowned accidentally and persuades Regan to take on the case. The more she starts digging, the more danger she is in. Can Regan find out what really happened before it's too late for her and the other vacationers at the Waikiki Waters?

From Booklist
When the body of Dorinda Dawes washes ashore on the beach of Waikiki Waters, Will's life as general manager of the recently renovated resort takes yet another turn for the worse. Thankfully, Regan Reilly, noted L.A. investigator, booked a last-minute trip to this very vacation spot, so Will enlists her help. Although the police rule Dorinda's death an accident, Will can't shake the feeling that foul play was involved, particularly because Dorinda's gossip-mongering in the resort's monthly newsletter had incurred all sorts of ill will. And what about the rare shell lei, stolen from a Hawaiian museum 30 years ago, that was found around the victim's neck? Suspects abound, of course: Might Will be covering for his own misdeeds? Are certain members of an oddball group of travelers from the Northwest in cahoots? It's a silly plot with a formulaic arc, but what Clark (daughter of romantic suspense master Mary Higgins Clark) lacks in style, she makes up for in entertaining storytelling and likable characters. About the Author
Alexander Hamilton was born in the West Indies in 1757, the illegitimate child of a Scottish merchant. He came to the American colonies to study at King's College (now Columbia University), and became an early and ardent supporter of the Revolutionary cause. During the Revolutionary War he was aide-de-camp to George Washington and a member of the Continental Congress. He was a leading figure at the Constitutional Convention (1787) and a principal author of The Federalist Papers. At first Secretary of the Treasury he articulated a policy of protection for manufacturing interests, strong central government, and establishment of a national bank. After leaving the Cabinet, he practiced law in New York. His personal attacks hindered the political career of the volatile Aaron Burr, who finally challenged him to a duel in 1804. Hamilton was shot, and died of his wounds.
John Jay (1747-1829) was a conservative lawyer who became a leading patriot. He was a minister to Spain (1780-82), the first Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1789-95), and he negotiated the treaty of 1795 between the U.S. and Britain. His contributions to The Federalist Papers concern foreign affairs.
James Madison was born in 1751, the son of a Virginia planter. He worked for the Revolutionary cause as a member of the Continental Congress and the Virginia House of Delegates. The leader of deliberations at the Constitutional Convention, he fought for the adoption of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Through an ally of Hamilton on the Constitution he was a supporter of Jefferson's agrarian policies. He was Jefferson's Secretary of State (1801-9) and his successor as president (1809-17), but his presidencywas marred by the unpopular War of 1812. Madison died in 1836

The Constitution of the United States of America was drafted chiefly by James Madison, considered to be The Father of the Constitution for his major contributions to the document.

Along with the Constitution, a foundational text of the United States
By Jeff Walden
If you want to understand the Constitution, you should read the Federalist Papers. They present, at great length, the rationale for discarding the Articles of Confederation and adopting the Constitution. You really can't claim to understand the Constitution, how it works, how it fits together, and how it was intended to fit together without reading these articles. (I picked this up on the recommendation of Justice Scalia, and he was absolutely right about this being a must-read to understand the Constitution.)

(A quick note on this particular edition of the Federalist Papers: while it self-describes as an "enriched classic", it is not especially enriched. As is proper, the book includes a copy of the Constitution and its amendments -- although strangely it omits the 27th Amendment despite being published well after its ratification. [There is no included copy of the Articles of Confederation, unfortunately -- I'd definitely have found such a copy helpful, particularly since I had no other access to them when reading the book.] A notes section which explains the cultural and historical references scattered throughout the papers. A brief 7-page "Interpretive Notes" section discusses the context for the Federalist Papers. A "Critical Excerpts" section discusses early reactions to and scholarship concerning the Federalist Papers up to the present day. And there's a couple pages of questions and a few suggestions for further learning for the interested reader. Does this spare additional material really an "enriched classic" make?

There's something to be said for providing the unvarnished text, with explanatory notes that are informative but not interpretive; it's much easier for the reader to form his own opinions, uninfluenced by the biases of a commentator, when the Federalist Papers stand on their own. This is for the most part the strategy this book follows. Yet I would not call this book, for following that strategy, an "enriched classic". If you're looking for analysis of each paper in context with the papers themselves, this is not the book for you.)

The entire series is long, consisting of 85 papers of various lengths. Yet it's well worth reading and slogging through, even if you have to contend with the 1780s style of highly-educated writing to do it.

That said, I would strongly recommend not attempting to read it the way one might read any old book, starting at the beginning, reading a bunch at a stretch, then reading a bunch more at a stretch, until the entire series is read. Instead, read a paper at a time, then spend some time to think it over. Consider the arguments and how they fit together; look at how they relate to the modern day; consider what was missed in the initial analysis. Giving each article the time it requires will make this book take considerably longer than the average book of 630 pages (not including text after the articles) would take. But it's worth it.

(For a little context, I started this book a couple weeks before an Appalachian Trail thru-hike, expecting at some point to finish it and leave it in a shelter for some other hiker to read, at which point I'd pick up another book and do the same thing, as many times as it took to finish the hike. I didn't even finish this book over those 139 days of hiking, only on the flight home -- it's that dense and worthy of thought. And it's not like I was distracted by other reading, either: I only read one other book in full during that time, plus a couple hundred pages of another. And even reading with that deliberateness, I'm sure I'd get more out of it if I spent the time to read it again.)

What comes around...

Photographer Sadie Price is known for her thick skin and infallible instincts. A lofty education has made her skilled in her craft, and a fear of poverty -- and love for Jimmy Choo -- has made her one of the East Coast's most savvy paparazzi. She keeps her exhilarating but sometimes hectic life manageable by staying on the right side of the razor-thin line between celebrity photographers and the stalkerazzi. But all that changes when Sadie locks horns with one of Hollywood's hottest bachelors.

...goes around.

Something about Ethan Wyatt's charisma and startling good looks throws Sadie off her game. Something about Sadie's dogged determination -- and a very compromising picture she snaps -- throws Ethan off his. Hatching a scheme befitting the silver screen that made him famous, Ethan sets out to give Sadie a taste of her own medicine. And when her life almost instantly becomes as frenzied as those of the "It Girls" she follows, Sadie starts to see her career, her love life, and Ethan Wyatt in ways she never had before....

For photographer Sadie Price, life as a member of the paparazzi isn't always a snap. Dodging her subjects' insults and hiding out in alleys is tough, but she really begins to question her career choice when Hollywood hunk Ethan Wyatt enters the picture. He has found a way to get under Sadie's skin, and he's not going to stop until she gives up stalking celebrities for good. Those who number UsWeekly among their guilty pleasures will love this look at life on the other side of the camera. Much like most celebrity magazines, style outweighs substance in this book, but most readers will be too caught up in the fun to care. Libby Street is the pseudonym for the two writers who wrote Happiness Sold Separately (2005). Once again they've collaborated to create a singular, spirited voice. There's sure to be more to come from this entertaining duo. Aleksandra Kostovski

SO. SO. GOOD!!
By Lisa Bedigian
You know how sometimes when you read a book that's written by two different people, you can always tell where one put the pencil down and another one picked it up (Nanny Diaries, anyone?!)?? This book is NOT like that! The girls manage to write in perfect harmony, and the story flowed wonderfully! I really loved this book, not just because I'm fascinated by papparazzi and Hollywood just like everyone else, but because it was so addictive and realistic. And funny!!

reads like a 1930s romantic romp brought into 2006 Manhattan
By A Customer
In New York City, as pushy paparazzi Sadie Price knows that all the celebrities she follows think she is lower than swamp scum, but she is good at what she does; stalk and photograph the famous. Still she once in a while dreams of being a top rate journalistic photographer who her subjects love not hates and has fans that enjoy her art not her subject. In other words one day she would like to be a news photographer in a less intrusive line.

When she tries to take pictures of superstar Ethan Wyatt, he becomes outraged and vows to teach the pest a lesson. Ethan begins to stalk Sadie so that she can become the subject of her odious peers who take photos of her in any situation. She detests the feeling of her every move being watched which curtails her freedom. However worse is that she is attracted to Ethan although he brought the Paparazzi Plague onto her. He, in turn, reciprocates, but like her, hides how he feels as a star and a paparazzi make the ultimate star-crossed lovers.

The ACCIDENTAL IT GIRL reads like a 1930s romantic romp brought into 2006 Manhattan to the delight of contemporary readers. The amusing gender war is fun to follow as Ethan turns the tables on Sadie by making her the subject of the hunt. Fans of lighthearted stories will want to read Libby Street's battle of the sexes.

Accidentally FABULOUS!!! (Maybe It Wasn't An Accident)
By nycblondie
As a big fan of Libby Street's first book, "Happiness Sold Separately", I waited with baited breath for "Accidental It Girl." It was, without question, well worth the wait!

Street's sophomore effort is, dare I say, better than the first book. The writing team that comprises Libby Street continues with the fresh, witty & realistic dialogue that originally caught my attention. Living in Manhattan, I continue to be impressed with how well Street captures the city and highlights it as one of the main characters.

The "real" characters are believable as well, and I again found myself laughing out loud (and groaning - hopefully to myself) at their trials and tribulations.

Sadie Price is Everygirl - full of self-doubt and confidence, intellect and ditzinesss, good humor and bit of bitchiness.

Bravo, Libby! I now resume holding my breath until your next new release......

  • Famed maestro Arturo Toscanini, a rabid wrestling fan, was good friends with Rocca.
  • Rocca was depicted wrestling Superman on the cover of an August 1962 comic book.
  • The 1976 horror film Alice, Sweet Alice, featuring child actress Brooke Shields, includes Rocca in a bit part.

In the 1950s, there was no bigger wrestling star on the East Coast than Antonino Rocca. With the exception of Gorgeous George, he was the greatest box-office attraction of his era. During the infancy of Capitol Wrestling, the company that would become WWE, Rocca was the key to the success of upstart promoter Vincent J. McMahon. For the first decade of Capitol's existence, he was the undisputed king of the ring. His amazing acrobatic feats made him the forerunner to innovative performers like Mil Mascaras, Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka, and Rey Mysterio.

Rocca was born Antonio Biasetton in 1923 -- along with a twin sister -- in the Italian town of Treviso, near Venice. At fifteen, with the threat of war looming in his Fascist-controlled homeland, he and his family immigrated to the city of Rosario in the South American nation of Argentina, a popular destination for expatriate Italians.

During his lifetime, Rocca had a penchant for outrageous exaggeration and outright fabrication, so what is known of his prewrestling career is shrouded in doubt. What's for certain is that he was a remarkable athlete, excelling in rugby and soccer. He nearly became a successful soccer player in Argentina, but a knee injury ended that.

In 1947 Biasetton began wrestling professionally in Argentina, where Stanislaus Zbysko, a famous World Champion wrestler of the early twentieth century, was running the local promotion. Biasetton changed his name to Rocca, playing up his Italian heritage, and adapted the incredible flexibility and agility he had used on the soccer field to the wrestling ring. Former American wrestler Nick Elitch spotted the high-flying Rocca while vacationing in Argentina in 1948.

Elitch convinced the twenty-five-year-old, who barely spoke any English, to make him his manager and come with him to the United States. In June 1948 he arrived on American soil and went to work for Houston promoter Morris Sigel, an associate of Elitch. He had his first matches in Galveston and Houston, where he defeated Lord James Blears.

An immediate success, Rocca wowed fans who had never seen an athlete of his type in a wrestling ring. In an era when wrestlers never left the mat and often clinched in holds for minutes at a time, Rocca brought a new, fast-paced excitement. He couldn't wrestle very much -- and this often made him unpopular with his peers -- but his flashy repertoire of aerial maneuvers like dropkicks, hurracanranas, and victory rolls dazzled spectators and made up for any lack of grappling technique. This was unprecedented, and literally changed what pro wrestling was for the generations that have followed.

Before long, other promoters were requesting Rocca, and Sigel began lending him out. In 1949, while competing in St. Louis, he was approached by veteran wrestler Kola Kwariani. The grizzled Russian convinced Rocca that New York was where the real money was, and stole him away from Elitch and the entire Houston contingent.

Kwariani became Rocca's manager and brought him to the Big Apple to work for Joseph "Toots" Mondt, a longtime promoter who was struggling to resurrect the wrestling business in the New York area. With a unique performer like Rocca, Mondt knew he could finally accomplish that.

Rocca agreed to an exclusive deal with Mondt's Manhattan Booking Office and took a three-room apartment on West Fifty-seventh Street. He made his area debut in Brooklyn at the Ridgewood Grove with a victory over Benito Gardini. On December 12, 1949, Mondt brought Rocca to Madison Square Garden, where he defeated "Mr. America" Gene Stanlee. A crowd of 17,854 witnessed the match, the largest Garden crowd in eighteen years. Just like that, wrestling in New York was back in business.

"He was the star of the Manhattan Booking Office," remembers longtime referee and wrestler Dick Kroll. "A very nice guy, very flamboyant, given to great exaggeration. He would claim he'd never been defeated; he would claim that he killed a man in South America. He was a braggart, but a fun braggart to be around."

In addition to his groundbreaking wrestling style, it was Rocca's ethnicity that brought in the masses. An Italian from Latin America, he had tremendous drawing power among both populations in the New York area. Not only did he become the greatest New York attraction since 1930s World Champion Jim Londos, but his agent, Toots Mondt, began booking him for promoters all over the country -- and raking in a hefty chunk of the profits. Inspired by his client's limber acrobatics, Mondt once remarked, "Rocca has done more for legs than Betty Grable."

Lesser promoters throughout the Northeast area were given access to Rocca on a regular basis. One of these was Vincent J. McMahon, whose Capitol Wrestling Corporation had begun presenting matches in Washington, D.C., at the start of 1953. Rocca was a fixture on the earliest McMahon cards, and helped the fledgling promoter carve out a successful territory for himself.

"Who could forget him?" asks WWE chairman Vincent K. McMahon. "In the old Madison Square Garden, I used to see Rocca perform. Oh my God, what an unbelievably charismatic and athletic performer. The stuff he could do was incredible. All kinds of aerial stuff."

When Vincent J. McMahon secured a national television deal with the Dumont Network in the summer of 1956, he persuaded Rocca to leave Mondt and work for him. An old-school promoter, Mondt had never had much faith in TV, which proved his downfall. Rocca became McMahon's attraction, and by the fall of 1956 Capitol's stock had raised to such a degree that McMahon had the leverage to move Mondt out of the Garden.

On November 26, the first McMahon-promoted event was held at the Garden, and featured Rocca beating Dick the Bruiser. Over the course of the late 1950s, McMahon's power in the Northeast grew, and Rocca became a bigger star than ever. He bought a $6 million textile mill in Argentina and was given his own daily radio show. Eventually McMahon and Mondt set aside their differences and, with Rocca as their top star, joined forces to become the most powerful promotional force wrestling had seen since the Gold Dust Trio of the 1920s (of which Mondt had been one).

"I used to tag team with Rocca," says veteran WWE wrestler and manager Arnold Skaaland. "He was a great guy. Good talker. He liked to b.s. a lot. I'd say, 'Rocca, where you been?' And he'd say, 'Arnie, you wouldn't believe it, but these Navy pilots took me over Cuba!' He'd come up with a lot of stuff like that. But he had a good heart."

"He was a great bullshitter," adds Vince McMahon. "But half his stories were true, and you didn't know what to believe. 'I'm working for the CIA down in Ecuador....' I think that was true. He would go on these missions and shit. What was fact, what was fiction? You never knew with Tony."

In 1957 Rocca entered a new chapter of his career, forming a legendary partnership with Puerto Rican Superstar Miguel Perez. They would be a regular Tag Team for the next four years. In March 1957, they defeated Jackie Fargo & Don Stevens to become the first holders of Capitol's first title -- the U.S. Tag Team Championship. Their feud with Dr. Jerry Graham & Eddie Graham would go down in wrestling history. From 1958 to 1960, Rocca & Perez headlined the Garden against the Graham Brothers on seven different occasions.

By 1960, Capitol Sports had become the uncontested ruler of wrestling in the Northeast. But it was just about that time that Rocca's star began to wane. Buddy Rogers was overtaking him as the company's top draw, and a new ethnic hero, Bruno Sammartino, was swiftly gaining steam. By the end of 1962, with McMahon and Mondt planning on breaking away from the NWA, starting World Wide Wrestling Federation and making Sammartino their top star, Rocca walked out on the promotion in bitterness.

Feeling vindictive toward his former employers, Rocca allied himself with Mid-Atlantic promoter Jim Crockett Sr., a leading member of the NWA -- whose members also had an axe to grind. With the Argentine as its top star, Crockett Promotions attempted an invasion of McMahon territory in the mid-1960s, running shows in places like Long Island, Brooklyn, and New Jersey. They even got television coverage, but it was still a resounding failure.

Rocca had not managed his money very well during his heyday -- preferring to live the high life -- and was now feeling the effects. Not only his financial status suffered, but his health as well, as years of heavy boozing took their toll.

"The poor bastard only got a third of every nickel he ever made," recalls Vince McMahon. "A tremendous draw, but he didn't get what was due him financially. He had his demons as well. Tony was the kind of guy, when you're having a good time, he was the greatest guy in the world to be around, but when you were having a bad time, you didn't want to be around him."

Rocca continued competing in obscurity into the 1970s, and in 1975, an amazing thing happened. Choosing to let bygones be bygones, McMahon, now the sole kingpin of WWWF, hired Antonino as a television announcer. Recognizing he still had appeal to the area's Italian and Latino populations, Vince Sr. paired him up with his son, future WWE chairman Vincent K. McMahon, as a regular broadcast team.

In early 1977 Rocca took time off from announcing to briefly come out of retirement in Puerto Rico. He returned to the Stat...

GREAT NOSTALGIA
By COOL JEWEL
WWE LEGENDS IS A GREAT READ FOR ALL FANS, BUT MOSTLY FOR FANS OLD ENOUGH TO REMEMBER THE 1960'S TO PRESENT DAY. MANY MANY PERFORMERS ARE COVERED IN A SHORT CHAPTER OF THEIR OWN. IT COVERS THE WRESTLER'S REAL NAME, A BIT OF BIOGRAPHY, TITLES HELD IF ANY, A BRIEF BUT DETAILED SUMMARY OF THEIR CAREER AND WHERE THEY ARE TODAY. (IF STILL LIVING) IT COVERS ANDRE, NATURE BOY, IRON SHEIK, SARGE AND MANY MANY MORE. IT BROUGHT BACK SOME GREAT MEMORIES WHEN AS A CHILD, I THOUGHT IT WAS ALL FOR REAL. I RECOMMEND THIS IF YOU WANT A GREAT READ FOR OLD TIME WRESTLING, WWE STYLE.

Watermark: The Disaster That Changed the World and Humanity 12,000 Years Ago, by Joseph Christy-Vitale

THE ECHOES OF OUR PAST
Twelve thousand years ago, the human race barely escaped annihilation when a piece of exploded star passed through our solar system, unleashing an apocalypse. Great fires raged, mountains rose and fell, a maelstrom of cosmic debris bombarded Earth, continents broke apart, and oceans swept across the land. Millions of people, animals, and plants perished almost overnight. Entire societies, cultures, and belief systems were lost forever. The resulting aftershock shaped humanity for thousands of years, and continues to haunt us to this day. This is not fiction. This is history.
THE TRUTHS OF THE PRESENT
Using authoritative source material and an understanding of mankind's aptitude for the transmission of factual knowledge through myth and legend, Joseph Christy-Vitale dramatically unveils a past unlike any proposed by either religion or science, viewing the global catastrophe as living history, since the traumatic effects of that terrible event affect us as a species even today.
THE PATHS OF THE FUTURE
Providing an insight into where our troubled view of the world originated, Watermark tells the true story of how humanity's brush with extinction still pervades our lives -- and offers the first step to recovering what we lost so long ago: a healthy, balanced view of the world.

From Publishers Weekly
The pyramids of Egypt and Central America; diluvial deposits high up on mountain sides; strange collections of animal bones in North American caves— Christy-Vitale, amateur scientist and travel industry consultant, believes these seemingly unconnected phenomena hint at a cosmic catastrophe 12,000 years ago: a supernova 45 light-years from Earth that shot a chunk of the star (which he calls Phaeton) into our solar system, shattering a 10th planet between Mars and Jupiter into what we know as the asteroid belt, killing off thousands of animal species and almost extinguishing an advanced human civilization. Memories of this event live on in stories of a golden age destroyed in a worldwide flood. While Christy-Vitale seems never to have met a myth he didn't like, he ignores some basic scientific facts. If a supernova had exploded in our vicinity even in the last 100,000 years, its glowing shell would still be visible. Also, supernovas don't shoot off ministars—rather, these cosmic explosions tend to pepper the surrounding cosmos with an iron isotope; scientists haven't found a layer dating from this era. There is also no evidence of a genetic "bottleneck" in humans dating back a mere 10,000 years. Christy-Vitale believes that the chunk of star dust zooming past us caused Earth to flip back and forth on its axis, resulting in, among other things, the current configuration of the continents. So much for continental drift. Christy-Vitale's scenario is an interesting one, but he seems more a New Age Erik Von Daniken than someone advancing a revisionist theory that will attract serious scientific attention.

Stunning, entertaining, educational, . . . but not gospel!
By Larry Gilstrap
Having finished reading this book a few days ago, I felt that the author had cleared up many of the mysteries I had grown up with as a child. Questions such as: Why is the axis of Uranus tilted so? Was there an Atlantis? Who/what killed the mammoths? Was the story of Noah's Ark real? and Why is the flood myth almost universally found in all cultures and folklore?

Having a substantial education in science, I was quite skeptical of the author's claim that a chunk of supernova came careening its way through our solar system, wreaking havoc among the planets. It didn't seem likely that supernova ejecta would ever recondense into appreciable blobs until it had fully dissipated into the surrounding interstellar medium. However, looking at detailed photos of planetary nebulae (nova & supernova remnants) I've notices that the outer (leading) edges often coalesce into sizeable clumps, that may indicate fairly solid cores within them.

As for one editorial review claiming that no iron isotopes had been found for the time period indicated (~12,000 years ago), an article ([...]) prove the reviewer wrong. In fact, there is a growing body of evidence that a comet exploded over Canada about that long ago, killing the mammoths and the clovis culture (paleoamericans) inhabiting north America at that time. For more information, see the book "The Cycle of Cosmic Catastrophes" by Richard Firestone, Allen West, and Simon Warwick-Smith.

And while I still don't buy a number of the ideas put forth in the book - one body tipping Uranus, tilting Neptune, creating Saturn's rings, exploding the planet between Mars and Jupiter, and then producing Noah's Flood and a subsequent ice age - I do like the way the author ties together the many disparate deluge, destruction and creation myths from around the world into one more or less cohesive whole. And that he does with great humanity and optimism both for our past, and our future.

He refers to the people who lived before that time as being members of an enlightened Golden Age, who lived by the One Law (the Golden Rule) and who were rather saintly (kind, moral, just, and compassionate), compared to the selfish, mean-spirited, and often ruthless individuals who run the world today. This may be a fantasy, but the author takes care to detail the widespread reports of teachers and helpers, who appeared all over the world after the catastrophe, to help survivors regain their humanity and civilization.

I give this book four stars for the excellence of the writing and the scholarship in drawing together so many diverse tales and disciplines. I refuse the fifth star because the science is fairly dubious in a number of instances. For instance, I can only barely imagine a mechanism by which enormous lightening bolts might be heard on Earth, over half-a-billion miles of vacuous space! And the odds of one celestial body upsetting so many planets during one pass through the solar system is so unlikely as to be absurd.

However, I must give him credit for pointing out the problems of mammoths living in an icy climate. If each mammoth requires 500 pounds of grass per day, grass would have to be very plentiful to support even modest herds of such creatures, and supposedly there were millions alive at the time of the event.

As a side note, the book also ties in nicely with the revisionist world history movement, written about by such people as Graham Hancock, Zecharia Sitchin, Ian Lawton and others, who also believe that a major event disrupted human civilization around 9,500 BC. Along with the actual scientific findings that a comet may have been the triggering event which caused a global calamity, the view of our past is beginning to become much clearer, and in time we may have a comprehensive theory of our past, without the many anomolies which plague our understanding today.

Perhaps the most fascinating assertions in this book have to do with the consequences of the Events. We fear both god and nature, and see ourselves as separate from them. (They were, after all, responsible.) We stopped obeying the One Law / Golden Rule, and have instead focused on our selfish desires at the expense of others. And we are subject to abusive behaviors and terrible depression. These, the author argues, are the vestiges of our survival skills desparately needed in those dark and terrible days after our near destruction.

My hope, in reading this book, and recommending it to you, is that in knowing from whence we came, me may someday return to where we belong - in a new Golden Age of our own.

debunkers smorgasbord
By Green Frog Shelters
Naturally science writers will hasten to debunk this book.

Anything that threatens the current world view held by the organized science industry... and I use the term 'industry' advisedly... threatens the rice bowl of all who support the current theories. And the thing to remember is that they are all theories. No matter how convinced and sincere they are. One will note that a super nova would still be visible. That is a theory. New jaw dropping discoveries are being made in the cosmos on an almost daily basis.

Personally, I like Vitales version/theory. His assumptions (insert joke here) seem to fit the facts better.

Is he right? Are the scientists right? They don't know, although they would have you think they do, and neither do we.

When everyone has slammed their books on the counter, and postured and posed and shouted their versions, and all the dust has settled, there are still mysteries.. caves full of bones, etc.. and Vitales theories fit better. In My Humble Opinion.

You go to your church, I'll go to mine.

What if?! Page Turner!
By N. Richardson
This was a great book to wet the appetite of ancient What-ifs. The author does a great job in linking ancient mythology, geology, animal extinctions and astronomy into a very probable scenario.

In all this was a great page turner that feels like a well written historical account of cataclysm backed by evidence. It is not too packed with data to feel like a geology textbook. Also not being to dreamy like a UFO chaser. Why only 4 stars? I felt that the last few chapters were a little rushed and mostly speculation, but what else is there to go by? I would have liked a little more images, diagrams and something make it just a little more evident. Next I am reading "Cataclysm" by D.S. Allen and J.B. Delair for a little more scientific evidence of all those bone-caves that Vitale wrote about.

Thank you for your great chase through ancient history Joseph!

Chapter One: Beat the Bank

So there you are, swinging through life buying a teensy bauble here, an itty-bitty new purse there, and occasionally taking that hottie down the hall to a nice little din-din to cheer him up after a lousy audition. "Everyone deserves a little pampering now and then," you tell yourself. Your friends tell you the same thing, sympathetically -- especially when you're picking up the check. And that's when you get the call. You know the one -- it's usually from a Mr. Green or a Ms. White, and it almost always begins with something misleadingly polite like, "We'd like to speak to you right away about your credit card balance." "Why are they bothering me?" you ask. "It was just a pair of shoes!" you think. And finally: "What's with the color-coded pseudonyms?"

We hate to inform you, but you've fallen into the dreaded Deadly Debt Trap. All credit cards should come with a label: Warning! Warning! Credit cards are not free money! But they don't, and before you know it, you're maxed out and have zero money left over after paying your bills. How's a person supposed to lead a fabulous life with a budget of nada?

Stupid Reasons for Going into Credit Card Debt

1. Gucci brings out my green eyes.

2. With a big-screen TV like that, who needs a boyfriend?

3. My honey may be a deadbeat, but he's my little deadbeat!

4. Bloomingdale's is on my way to work. Like that's my fault.

5. By buying those Ralph Lauren sheets on sale, I'm actually saving money!

Having credit card debt is like wearing a heavy ankle bracelet (we're talking house arrest, not a fashion accessory) 24/7. It keeps you from building any kind of savings, including your See Ya Sucker Stash (see Hit the Road), and can make it harder for you to rent apartments, get loans, or buy a house.

Proper Credit Card Conduct

1. Transfer your balances to cards that earn you freebies, like airline mileage.

2. Transfer your balances to a card that has an extremely low APR* (like no interest for a year), then try to pay it off before that introductory APR is raised.

3. Always pay more than the minimum, but not so much that you don't have enough to pay other bills.

4. Finally, screen your calls -- no need to let "Mr. White" ruin your night. Just be sure to pay the bill the next day.

Tips for Getting out of Debt

1. Don't live in denial. Figure out everything and everybody you owe.

2. Lower your expenses. Tap into your inner Disciplinarian, who can slap down your inner Princess from time to time. When you start to whip out the plastic, ask yourself: "Oh, fabulous one, is this a need or an indulgence?" Learn to tell the difference between the two; indulge when you have the cash in hand, but try to do it cheaply. (See Blue-Chip Babes.)

3. Increase your income. Get two jobs (it can be done) or a higher-paying gig until your debt is paid off.

4. Get help. Call the Consumer Credit Counseling Services at (800) 577-2227.

Bad advice
By Dallas
Though this book has some good advice and it written in a fun style, I'm giving it two stars because I'm very disappointed in some of the unethical and illegal advice that it recommends:

* Lie to the cop if you've been drinking

* Sneak to better seats during a theater intermission

* Buy tickets online so you can get the child's price

* Buy clothes, wear once, and return them

I'd prefer to learn to be a hip chick without scamming, cheating, or lying.

Reminds me of old Sassy magazine
By Catherine
I hate the whole wave of how-to books for girls. A friend gave me this book and I read it one day when I couldn't find anything else. It was WAY smarter and hipper than I expected. She lists Massive Attack and Serge Gainsbourg as dinner music, teaches you how to play craps, and real info you want like tenant rights and how to get free long distance on your computer. A great read.

Charming and fun
By A Customer
This book is so fun to read that you forget you're actually learning a lot. Full of information that ranges from the very serious--how to be a solid friend and deal with family issues with aplomb--to the hilarious (see title). A savvy, smart book with good values at its core.

From Booklist
Quinn Star has thrived since she quit the FBI, disgusted with the old-boy environment and devastated at the seeming betrayal by Puff, her boss and lover. Almost 10 years later, she has her own law practice, teaches, and is engaged to a judge. In fact, everything's perfect until Puff reappears to offer Quinn the job she always wanted, secret service agent at the White House. She hesitates because it will wreak havoc in her life but finally says yes. Quinn and a woman friend who also quit the FBI are to guard the First Lady, whom, it seems, is off her rocker and about to be committed. Quinn has her work cut out for her, but when she starts to see the same conspiracy afoot in the White House as the First Lady, she dedicates herself to protecting her and exposing secrets, not to mention dealing with her renewed feelings for Puff. Another fast-paced and engaging story from the prolific and entertaining Michaels. Maria Hatton

exciting contemporary romantic suspense
By A Customer
After performing as a superstar in a male world, Quinn Star quit the old boy network because she could not crash through the glass ceiling. She blames much of her failure on her former lover and ex boss "Puff" Lapusky, who she felt held her back. Quinn enjoys teaching law at Georgetown and loves her fiancé Judge Alexander Duval, ironically nominated to be the next FBI Director.

For the first time in over seven years, Puff visits Quinn asking her to serve as a secret service agent protecting the First Lady Lettie Jaye, who has been acting strange. The Feds want her under surveillance and protected. Puff believes that Quinn is the best "man" for the job. The assignment proves problematical as Lettie uncovers a high level government conspiracy to hide the truth even if it means killing the current temporary occupants. The most difficult aspect of Quinn's job is not keeping the First Lady safe; it is the return of Puff. She now realizes that her negative feelings for him were a way of hiding her hurt because she still loves him.

Fern Michaels is THE REAL DEAL when it comes to an exciting contemporary romantic suspense. Her latest tale moves on two intertwined subplots. The romance between the engaged Quinn and the man she hates and loves Puff, who should have been fired for messing with a subordinate (where is Mr. Clinton?) is remedied a bit too easily. The exhilarating White House suspense plot is filled with twists that will fool the audience who will enjoy every moment of the manipulations of those in power. This exciting romantic political thriller will appeal to fans who like the works of Nora Roberts and Jayne Ann Krentz

She does it again!
By Sally N. Crowe
Fern Michaels is one of my favorite authors, and she does it again with The Real Deal! Quinn Star (what a great name!) engaged to a boring judge, steps out of the realm of everyday life in protecting the eccentric, wacky, First Lady of The United States. However, the First Lady is right on the map about her husband. Who would know better than she that the love of her life is in trouble?

I was intrigued with the tunnel that runs between the two houses in South Carolina, and I just had to laugh out loud at Quinn's (also wacky) Aunt Birdie who enjoys "doctoring" up dead people!

You can always tell when reading Ms. Michael's books that she is a canine advocate. Although I'm not real intrigued with dogs myself, I do enjoy the escapades that show up in the books by this author. I highly recommend this book for a lazy summer afternoon.
