About the Author
Evan Hunter's first novel, The Blackboard Jungle, was an instant bestseller. He wrote the screenplay for Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds, and his novels Strangers When We Meet and Last Summer were made into hit movies; his novel Criminal Conversation has been optioned for film by Tom Cruise.
Under the name Ed McBain, he has written the astounding 87th Precinct series. From Cop Hater and the Edgar Award-nominated Money, Money, Money to The Frumious Bandersnatch, the more than fifty novels in the series have sold more than one hundred million copies worldwide. He holds the Mystery Writers of America's Grand Master Award, and was the first American to receive the British Crime Writers Association's prestigious Diamond Dagger Award.
Evan Hunter and his alter ego Ed McBain combined their talents to create Candyland, a novel in two parts, available from Pocket Books. The most recent Evan Hunter novel, The Moment She Was Gone, is also available from Pocket Books.

Great novel by Evan Hunter

I am an Evan Hunter fan, and The Chisholms did not disappoint me. It is a wonderful historical novel and great character study.

Early effort

I have enjoyed many of Evan Hunter's books, also Ed McBain's. This one ,however must have been one of his early efforts.

Disappointing

I'm a fan of both Evan Hunter and his alter ego, Ed McBain, and I must say 'The Chisholms' didn't read as though it was written by either. It was more like a pilot for a TV show which didn't get aired. The characters and the premise - a family forced to cross dangerous territory - were not well developed, and when I reached the end I found myself looking for a note explaining that I ought to have bought the second in the series! The blurb talks up the story, and I had been looking forward to a different genre from a favourite author, but overall this was one big disappointment.
