Zane Siplin has done it again. Such a Girl is a witty, fast-paced novel about lost love and the possibilities of what can happen further down the road.

Chapter One

He's standing across the street, waiting for the light to change, but I know it's him even before he starts walking in my direction. I think: I'm not ready for this. Because my least favorite thing in the morning, besides waking up, is meeting people I know unexpectedly.

And it's been nine years.

There are certain meetings in a person's life that should be one hundred percent significant. They should define a moment, answer a burning question, or resolve something. Right now is a good example. I should have something to say to this man, something fairly significant. After all, we were once inseparable and in love.

But I don't. Have anything to say, that is.

I just have this memory of him. We're standing in front of the boathouse in Northhampton. His head is shaved. He's wearing a beaded necklace and a ton of friendship bracelets on both wrists. His skateboard is tucked under his arm, and his eyes -- light brown, big, intent -- are watching my every move.

Jack.

Just last week someone was talking about him. It seems every week someone's mentioning his name. Because Jack owns Sullivan Brewery in New England; Jack just bought a five-bedroom house on four acres of land.

I decide I'd rather not run into him.

I lower my head and take a drag from my cigarette, confident he'll pass by without noticing me. But instead of walking past me, he walks toward the hotel's entrance, which is adjacent to the employee entrance, where I'm standing. He stops, comes back, says my name. I look up and try to do my best impression of being shocked to see someone.

"Wow." I flick my cigarette past him and smile. "Sullivan."

I call him by his last name, the same way most of my ex-boyfriends call me "Stark" oh-so-casually when we run into each other somewhere. It's a defense mechanism. It always makes me feel bad, like I'm not even worthy of a first name. I don't know why I do it to Jack. I don't want him to feel that way.

"How long has it been, Ken?" he asks.

He calls me "Ken," short for Kendall, the way he used to. He makes it seem like nothing's changed.

"Years, I guess."

"Nine, I think," he says softly.

We stare at each other awkwardly. He takes in my unkempt hair, ill-fitting cargo pants and white-socked feet stuffed into old Birkenstocks. Graciously, he remains expressionless and looks directly in my eyes.

"You look great," he says. He was always good at lying.

"Same to you."

I'm not lying. He's actually more handsome than I thought he would turn out to be. His glasses are small, round and rimless; he used to wear contacts. His hair has grown. His body, which has always been long, agile and thin like the body of a swimmer, is hidden underneath clothes straight out of an L.L. Bean catalog. He looks rugged and stronger and changed.

"I'm surprised to see you." His tone is still soft, neither friendly nor mean.

"Been a while." I nod, keeping my tone light. "You live in Maine, right?"

"Maine."

"Nice," I say. "And you still brew beer."

"Yeah." He tilts his head to the side. He wants to tell me everything I already know, but I guess he doesn't want to brag because all he says is, "I still brew beer."

"And you're in New York."

He nods, still staring at me. I try to read the expression on his face. And then there's the slight shake of his head that I remember -- like he's trying to banish some thought from his brain -- and the expression is gone. He points to the hotel. "I'm staying here."

"Oh?" My voice almost gets caught in my throat. "This hotel?"

"Yeah." He avoids my eyes.

"Business?"

"Yeah," he says. "You live around here?"

"No." There's a silence. I try to catch his eye again, but he's doing a good job of diverting his gaze. "I live in Brooklyn. With Gary."

"Right." As though he's just remembering. "I think I heard that."

"I work here," I say. "At the hotel."

"Oh." Another silence. This one is longer. He glances at me but quickly looks away again. "That's a coincidence."

"Sure is," I say. I replay the last fifty conversations I had with Gary and Nick this week -- we were all in college together -- but a mention of Jack actually coming to New York today doesn't come to mind. "Have you talked to Gary and Nick? Do they know you're in town?"

"No," Jack says distantly. "I checked in late last night."

"Nick mentioned he ran into you last August," I say casually, as though Nick hasn't mentioned it a hundred times. As though Nick doesn't talk about how excellent Jack's life is every time they exchange an e-mail. "He said you might be in New York, but he wasn't sure when. I think he had the impression it would be sooner."

"Family emergency," Jack says. "I'll call him."

"I'm sure he'll be happy to hear from you. He said he's been e-mailing you a lot."

Jack smiles, then he looks at the hotel entrance as though he's ready to dart away.

"Well," I say, giving him an out.

He swallows hard. "It's good to see you." I hear the involuntary emotion in this simple statement. "I mean that."

I hug him suddenly, and I feel his body stiffen. When I let go he steps back.

"You smell like smoke," he says disdainfully, and then he adds, "I quit."

"Congrats" is all I can think of to say. And for a second, I'm distracted by the way he's looking at me. Like he's trying to remember what he ever saw in this girl standing before him.

I try to imagine what he sees.

When he knew me, my hair was always neat and polished in a pageboy haircut. Now it's messy, the front bits standing up in the air. My eyes have always been too close together though, and my eyebrows have always been too thick. But maybe he notices that I still lift weights and run when the mood hits me.

Strange, I think, that I care.

"Maybe I'll see you around," he says casually, moving away.

"Maybe," I say.

"Dinner?" The casual front disappears, and he moves closer. "In a couple of days?"

I don't know about dinner. There's no way in hell I want to spend several hours with my ex, rehashing the past and how poorly I treated him. I tell him life is hectic, especially this week. He doesn't believe me -- weird how I can tell that he doesn't -- but it's been too long between disagreements to suddenly have another one.

He watches me as I escape inside the employee entrance. I glance back, and I realize he looks disappointed.

It's a look I remember.

Like the book, a good one that underachieves...

I love the way Karen Siplin writes. I just don't get what story she's trying to tell.

Kendall is a 30-something, underachieving, phone operator for a high-end NY hotel. How she got to that point is never explained fully. It seems too simple to atribute her lack of success to a lack of ambition, and yet that's all Siplin gives us.

Then the "the one she threw away" ex-boyfriend, Jack, shows up trying to rekindle the relationship, and most of the book is spent reading about her bouncing from resentment to realization about how immature she'd been to let her friends control her relationship with Jack.

I never get why Jack wasn't good enough for Kendall's group of friends. It was never explained if he was too rich or too poor. Class was definitely introduced into the group's relationship, but there was light a touch on how it affected their past. At most the impression was that Jack was considered to be unfocused, but even that sounded crazy when in college they purported themselves to be free spirits, and he supposedly graduated from school just like they had.

I'm not giving anything away by saying Jack and Kendall end up together. But what I wonder is if her ex was ultimately her chance to become successful, instead of Kendall getting off her @ss and making more substantive moves. I almost felt sorry for Jack for getting what he wants.

The class issues mentioned in the book aren't resolved. They peeter out as Kendall gets closer and closer to taking Jack back. Its as if Kendall had been slumming, and then finally decided to becoming one of them, so one way or another she was given a pass.

The ending was unrealistic. I don't know how I feel about the book overall. But it was very well written and I think that Karen Siplin has a gift for it.

I'm persuaded - it's a nice adaptation.

I picked up this book because of its description as being loosely based on Jane Austen's Persuasion. I happen to like Austen originals, as well as movies and books based on her works. This was no exception. "Such A Girl" is the conduit for Kendall Stark's life story. Almost a decade ago while in college, Kendall broke up with her love Jack Sullivan because her upwardly mobile college friends saw him as someone going nowhere FAST. Jack was a loafer, but one who was determined to enjoy life even if things like classes got in the way. After many breakup-to-makeup periods, Kendall walked out of his life and didn't look back.

Now she's living a life that passes as satisfying. She's a 31-year hotel telephone operator who lives with one of her aforementioned college friends, now an aspiring writer who works as a waiter. When Jack walks into her hotel one day, she's hit right in the fast with her unresolved history. Jack is now a successful owner of a beer manufacturing company. It seems that Jack is living the life that Kendall and her friends were struggling to attain years ago. Though they missed the mark, Jack is sitting pretty - with a fiancée to boot. Kendall, who is involved in an affair with a married man, must face her lingering feelings for Jack as she struggles to understand what Jack is doing in "her" hotel.

It's a nice adaptation of Jane Austen's Persuasion with all the social commentary on the differences in classes and love lost due to superficial reasons. I enjoyed the novel. My only criticism is that the tales of Kendall's life as an operator and her interactions with co-workers and neighbors were often too many and too detailed for me. I was particularly distracted by her ongoing conflicts with her neighbors, which distracted from the overall flow of the novel at times. It was annoying, but it didn't interfere greatly with my overall enjoyment of the story and its underlying romantic themes.

delightful treatment of Jane Austen's PERSUASION

Nine years ago at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Kendall Stark heeded the advice of her friends by ending her two year relationship with Jack Sullivan because everyone insisted he was a loser. Now, Kendall is a thirty-one year old single living in Brooklyn, working as a communications operator at a popular luxurious Manhattan hotel, and having a nowhere affair with a married man.
Kendall feels contented until she sees Jack, owner of New England?s very successful Sullivan Brewery who is staying at the hotel. Kendall handles herself reasonably well during the encounter, but as he leaves his look back is filled with disappointment that shakes her to the core of her essence. Kendall realizes what she lost when she stopped being Sullivan?s Ken; she decides she must try to win back his love. However, Jack not only has to forgive, he wonders if she desires him because he is a success?
As CLUELESS DID TO Jane Austen's EMMA, SUCH A GIRL provides the same delightful treatment to the author?s PERSUASION with Ken being Anne Elliot and Sullivan is retired naval officer Frederick Wentworth. The enjoyable second chance at love story line reflects a realistic social order that though the plot takes place in the twenty-first century could have easily been in the early 1800s. Sullivan is a wonderful protagonist as he wants his Ken back in his life, but doubts he can trust her with his heart. Ken regrets the error that shaped her life, but shows courage as she decides to prove she is his significant other forever. Together they make an intelligent and witty tale.

"We're going to Xenex?"

Newlywed Elizabeth Shelby had been looking forward to an increase in the quality and frequency of communication with her longtime love, sparring partner, rival, and commanding officer, Mackenzie Calhoun. They were, after all, husband and wife, married in a ceremony officiated by Jean-Luc Picard that could be called, at best, impromptu, on the bridge of Calhoun's once and future command, the Excalibur.

The truth was that every fragment of Shelby's common sense had warned her that marrying Calhoun was folly. But, hell, the man had literally come back from the dead to ask for her hand in marriage. How could any woman, any person, with a fragment of romance in their soul, walk away from a situation such as that?

Very easily if she had any brains, Shelby was starting to think.

Calhoun, after having undergone a debriefing so that Starfleet knew exactly what his whereabouts had been during the time he'd been believed dead, had been given two weeks' time to rest, recuperate, and honeymoon with his brand-new bride. ("During which time, Shelby will no doubt repeatedly debrief him as well," Kat Mueller had deadpanned, a comment that had gotten puzzled looks from some crewmen and guffaws from others.) Calhoun owned a state-of-the-art runabout, which had been moved to the new Excalibur, almost in a sort of in memoriam gesture. So it was conveniently there when the happy couple required it.

Crew members had assembled on the holodeck, armed with handfuls of rice to be thrown, a tradition that was incomprehensible to Calhoun, whothought it represented a collective desire that they put more fiber in their diet. Shelby had explained that it represented a hope for fertility, which had sent Calhoun into such spasms of laughter that she wished she'd said that yes, it represented fiber. For his part, Picard had taken the opportunity to make reservations for them at the resort world of Risa, generously offering to pick up the cost as a present to the newlyweds. So Risa was, naturally, where Shelby was anticipating they were going to go.

That anticipation took an abrupt U-turn when she saw the coordinates Calhoun had entered into the nav computer and the intended destination.

"We're going to Xenex?" It was the second time she'd said it, because Calhoun had simply nodded the first time.

"That's what I was hoping," said Calhoun."Well, my love...let's fire up the engines and not keep all the nice folks waiting for our depart -- "

"Hold it!" Shelby said, standing. "Nothing's getting fired up, Mac, including you on our wedding night tonight, until you explain this. Xenex? Your homeworld?"

"It's the only Xenex I know of."

"Why?" she demanded.

He sighed heavily. "I'm sorry. You're right. I shouldn't have assumed. I mean, it would only add a day to the trip, but it wasn't a given that -- "

"Spare me the halfhearted apologies, Calhoun. What's going on?" She leaned against the console, her arms folded, clearly not backing down.

"All right...look," said Calhoun. "I know that Picard conducted the ceremony, and in the eyes of the Federation and Starfleet it's all legal, proper, aboveboard..."

"But...?" she prompted.

"But...I am Xenexian. Before I was Starfleet...before I was anything...I was, and am, Xenexian."

"I know that, Mac," she said, beginning to have a suspicion what the problem was. "And I know it hasn't always been easy for you, balancing the heritage and upbringing you have with the man that your time in Starfleet has made you become." She reached over and ruffled his hair affectionately. Then she glanced at the view on the monitor.The folks outside were looking impatient. "Okay, so...Xenex..."

"In the eyes of Xenexian society," said Calhoun, "our marriage wouldn't be considered legal. We would need to be married in a ceremony conducted by the village shaman. Otherwise, I'd feel like..." Then he stopped and shook his head. "But this isn't your problem, Eppy. You're looking forward to the honeymoon, and you've taken such a leap of faith in marrying me already. This is my problem, not yours, and if the Federation considers us married, that should be all that matters...."

"But it's not," Shelby said. "What matters to you, Mac, matters to me. That's what being married is all about. You've made it clear it's important to you, and all the backtracking you're now trying to do, out of consideration for me...well, it's sweet because it is being considerate of me, but it's unnecessary. I feel good about our being married, Mac. No...I feel great about it. And I don't want there to be any impediment to your feeling great about it as well. And it's one day. One day out of the rest of our married life. Besides, let's face facts: Being married won't be easy. We'll be spending a good portion of our time apart, in separate commands. I want our bonds to be as strong as possible, and if that means having a second ceremony on Xenex, I'm all for it."

"Really?"

"Really." She smiled.

A minute later, the runabout lifted off, and the crew members pelted the vessel with rice as it headed for the forcefield door. It eased through the field, the atmosphere in the shuttlebay staying neatly intact behind it.

The moment they were gone, Zak Kebron said loudly, "All right. Taking bets as to how long it will last."

Activity was fast and furious.

It had been many years since Shelby had set foot on Xenex, and it was every bit as hot and uninviting as she remembered. But Calhoun was grinning ear to ear the moment they disembarked from the runabout, and that alone was enough to make her smile as well. Then again, they'd had a festive and very active wedding night, so it seemed natural that he'd been in an exceedingly good mood. She thought it was sweet the way he kept reaching over, touching her hand or her shoulder, especially since he'd never been that much of a touchy-feely person before. When she'd made an observation about his attitude, he'd simply said, "It helps me to believe you're actually here." That seemed even sweeter.

"Amazing," Calhoun said, gesturing around at the spaceport where they'd landed. "None of this was here years ago. Now look how built up it is."

"Built up" was hardly the phrase Shelby would have used. It was one of the smallest spaceports she'd ever been to,with exactly two landing fields as opposed to the typical nine or ten, and no conveniences for the transporting of luggage. But Calhoun seemed impressed by it, and she had to suppose that, for him, it was impressive. He had, after all, walked this world when he was little more than a savage fighting for his world's freedom, and even a simple glass of water was considered an amenity. So she supposed it was all relative.

Calhoun obtained a land skimmer to take them the fairly short distance to his home territory of Calhoun, the location that had provided him the last name he'd adopted for his career in Starfleet. "Mackenzie Calhoun" was a much easier name for non-Xenexians to say than his given name of M'k'n'zy of Calhoun.

Upon arriving in Calhoun, he was greeted boisterously by other Xenexians, who spoke at him in their rapid-fire native tongue. They'd received advance word of Calhoun's survival when he'd previously been believed dead, so naturally there were joyous greetings from all.The Universal Translator handled it all for Shelby, of course, but she was nevertheless struck by how raunchy and racy virtually all of the Xenexian expressions were. "You look well!" for instance,was literally translated as "I wager your genitals have not shrunk!" It wasn't enough to bring a flush of embarrassment to Shelby's cheeks, but it was sufficient to throw her slightly off her stride. Nor did any of the Xenexians make the slightest pretense of doing anything other than openly sizing her up. They looked her up and down as if assessing a potential racehorse, and they were quite vocal in their appraisals. Some dismissed her as "too stringy," which made it sound like they were considering whether she'd make a good meal. Others, however, nodded approvingly, and made candid comments about which parts of her anatomy were the most pleasing.

In short, the Xenexians displayed a total lack of tact. So much so, in fact, that it gave her a new, fuller appreciation for all the strides that Calhoun had made in his time with Starfleet. Her husband might have been a maverick with little regard for rules and regulations, but at least he didn't meet women and say, "Your hips seem more than adequate for childbearing."

D'ndai, Calhoun's brother, was not on Xenex, a discovery that disappointed and frustrated Calhoun. D'ndai was ostensibly in important meetings on Danter and couldn't get away. "He's there so much, one would almost think he was becoming Danteri," grumbled more than one of the Xenexians, who looked to D'ndai for leadership. From Calhoun's grim expression, it seemed to Shelby that possible problems for D'ndai might be arising in the near future if these attitudes among his people continued.

Finally, Calhoun turned to her and said, "This way." Cutting through the throng, shaking hands, assuring them that he'd take the time to continue conversations later, he led her across the city. The buildings were all very simple, built low to the ground, and although Calhoun kept commenting on how living conditions on Xenex had improved, it still looked terribly primitive to her. But Shelby was, first and foremost, a Starfleet officer, and she refused to sit in judgment on the Xenexians.

"Here," Calhoun said finally when they stopped in front of one particular house. It was small...

After reading Ilsa J. Bick's Well of Souls, just a terrific and griping book, I was inspired to find more of her work. Whoever said that her story in this anthology about Morgan Primus got him choked up is right on. "Alice, on the Edge of Night" just shines, and Bick's ability to get into the heads of her characters and make you care about them is truly amazing. She has a deft command of language and phrasing that left me gasping. Other people have griped about her writing, but I find it refreshing and captivating. I hope to see more by her in the Trek universe. Several reviewers at the Well of Souls website mentioned having her do a series. That's a good idea.
Other terrific stories: David Mack's Kebron story, Sherman's story about an adolescent Si Cwan, and, of course, Peter David's tale of Calhoun's and Shelby's honeymoon.
Please, someone -- do this again. With these writers. Please.

Very uneven

I obviously disagree with the other reviewers about the quality of this collection. It is a series of short stories covering an episode in the past of the main characters in the New Frontiers series. A few of the stories are entertaining, some of them are just annoying.

The book starts off with an adventure of Mac when he worked as a lone operative. I thought the logic and motivations of the story were so poorly thought out that the unbelievability of them ruined the story for me.

Shelby's story was just purely boring. The author thought they could take a tale of data analysis and make something fascinating out of it. The author failed. Not only was it boring, but the detail of the supposed data analysis just sounded trite and ignorant of the intended subject. Zack Kebron's story was an extended joke. It had its humorous side, but was far to long for the mediocre punch lines. Dr. Selar' story was, I thought, one of the more interesting, and was a worthy read. Si Cwan's story was OK, but nothing extra special.

I think that all the writers involved are capable of much better work than was evidenced in this collection. A few of the stories look like they had some real work and thought put into them. Most of them appear to have been quickly dashed off to get a cut of the book, and no more.

Since these stories don't really impact the continuing series of novels, it can safely be skipped without missing anything. If you are a completest, read it. Its not a complete waste of time, but it is not nearly as entertaining as Peter David's novels in this series are.

This overreaching book assumes all "take-action," "proactive" parents will dedicate themselves to their children's nutritional needs from delivery through the teen years. In order to ensure their "cute chubby child" won't "go on to become a fat teenager and adult, at risk for obesity, coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and a shorter life," parents' attention to what their kids eat must be unflagging, say the authors. They prescribe researching a family medical tree, tracking children's growth and computing their body mass index. Diligent moms and dads must get young ones to love exercise, fish and vegetables and must make meals fun and snacks healthy. If Good Morning America cohost Lunden, whom pediatrician Winick calls "one of America's most famous and visible working moms," can do it, so can readers. Most of the book's real advice, however, is commonsense and can be found in any basic nutrition guide. And the authors' assertions regarding the relationship between a specific childhood nutritional regimen and adult disease have few studies to back them up. So they hedge: "We now recognize that because of the diets our children consume, some... diseases may begin in early childhood or infancy-even in the womb." But based on this uncertain hypothesis, Winick proclaims, "we now know that we can intervene on those diseases and perhaps change the course of our children's lives." Perhaps. But it's also possible that this book will merely turn mealtimes into parental guilt-trips.

The work describes the particulars of childhood nutrition.

For instance, food should not be used as a reward for children.

Parents should control sugar (especially processed sugar) and

provide meals consisting of fruits/veggies. Calcium and Vit. D

supplements are another important source of long term osteoporosis

control and bone health-far into the future.

Sample menus are provided to take the difficulty out of depicting

good nutrition. The author describes good/bad cholesterol.

Vitamins B6 and B12 are vital to control homocysteine levels.

Folic acid is another important vitamin utilized for a similar

purpose. At the appropriate time, a child's intake of breast

milk should be curbed. The book has a considerable literature

on how to raise children nutritionally fit for life. It is a solid value for the price charged.

In the end, alas, she slips in a soapy Hollywood ending. Still, this is a rich portrayal of new motherhood and a fun ride. Weiner's readers will root for her to trust ever more her ability to float between comedy and pathos, leaving the shallows for true and surprising depths.

What brings the women together is their love for their newborns. The fourth woman, Lia, watches the group from afar; she's an actress who walked out on her husband after a devastating tragedy. Weiner seamlessly and gracefully weaves the four women's stories together. The fact that her second novel, In Her Shoes (2002), is being made into a movie starring Cameron Diaz should draw plenty of readers; once they pick up the book, they'll find a warm, often funny, touching look at the challenges and joys of new motherhood and marriage. Highly overrated

This book had great potential and at first I couldn't put it down. Unfortunately, the characters never developed and by the end I was sick and tired of their whining. The characters were very stereotypical and while much was made of the trials of motherhood, the author never really showed us the joys that make it all worthwhile. I'm a working mom who's also experienced the pain of losing a baby and I was extremely disappointed in the storyline for Lia. There was a better story there than the one that was written.

Good writing style, but didn't spin a good story

I loved In Her Shoes, but was disappointed with Little Earthquakes. Weiner's writing style and wit were on the mark. But I felt that the characters were one-dimensional, not very sympathetic, and in ways not even likable. There was so much focus on the negative of early motherhood that you never got the sense there was any joy as well. This is especially true of how the husbands are portrayed.

I also felt that some of the plotlines were not plausible. Why would these three girls suddenly become so close so quickly just because they took a yoga class together? Also, if a woman loses her child, would she really find solace in OTHER people's children? Not only does it seem creepy that she comes across as a bit of a stalker, but I just don't buy that this is how a woman deals with this kind of pain.

Eventually the story started to drag. I began to care less and less what happened to these glum women, just the opposite of how I felt about Maggie and Rose Feller of In Her Shoes.

Buy one for you and one for a friend or family member

Brilliant. Truly a compelling and fabulous read. I'd read and loved her first two books, but this one far surpassed them for me.

All four main characters are well-realized, complicated, interesting women. As they negotiate new parenthood and the various changes in self, worklife, and relationships with family and partners, the characters must find their own solutions and Weiner avoids the easy answers. While Weiner does a wonderful job capturing the mundane practical dilemmas of diapering, cell phone calls from work, mothers-in-law, and so on, she also explores the challenges of how you reconceive your own family after becoming a parent, how you reshape a partnership when you go from being a couple to being a family, and how you revise your sense of self once you're a parent.

I especially appreciate how Weiner renders her main characters' male partners in nuanced tones, even while staying firmly focused on viewing the world through the four women's experiences.

This is a book I'll be giving my brother, my close friends, and my mother, among many others. It's absolutely not just for new mothers, though that's certainly one group of people who might enjoy the book. It is a compelling read for anyone interested in well-developed characters dealing with tightly plotted storylines in a well-realized physical world. Beautifully done.

WARNING: if you find yourself lost in sadness related to losing a child, this may well be a healing book, but you should be prepared to cry.

This impressive audio is a version of a London theatrical performance featuring McGregor as Iago, Chiwetel Ejiofor in the role of Othello, and Kelly Reilly playing Desdemona. In a studio recording session, the actors “reproduced as closely as possible the stage production.” Authentic sound effects and background music further enhance the presentation. Experiencing a play aurally is different than viewing a stage performance, and sometimes it is difficult to distinguish between the voices in the predominantly male cast. Nevertheless, this is an excellent vehicle for introducing the classic tragedy to students and Shakespeare fans. An accompanying DVD includes interviews with cast members. Their discussions of the characters, analyses of motivations, and decisions on delivering lines are thoughtfully presented. No annotations on each page

My problem with the Kindle Bantam Classic edition of Othello is that there are no footnotes at the bottom of each page. This means no immediate vocab definitions or comprehension aids. I bought the Kindle edition because my old Signet paperback Othello is yellow with age, plus tiny font. (I'm rereading Othello before watching the live performance starring Blair Underwood and Richard Thomas.) Not being a scholar of Elizabethan English, I do need annotative help with the vocab and idioms. So unfortunately, it's back to the old, barely readable but annotated Signet print version for me.

Great play, great electronic version

Othello was one of the first plays I was exposed to when I was younger. It has murder, suicide, intrigue and things that would get a teenager into Shakespeare.

I've had mixed success with some of the free Kindle versions of Shakespeare. Some have been good, some have been awful. This is an exceptional version. It's formatted nicely and is easy to read. The only "lack" is that it is without line numbers, so if you were to use this for academic reasons, you might have an issue or two.

Thus far, Othello's my favorite free Shakespeare play. I missed how much of a jerk Iago was, and all the deception that lead to Othello killing Desdemona.

Love It!!!

After having graduated from college 19 years ago, I was a little intimidated about reading Shakespeare again. However, the Folger Library makes reading Shakespeare much easier to follow (& more fun)! The words that appear as "foreign" to the modern English reader are briefly explained on the left side of each page -- which makes the text easier to follow. I only wish they had these words in bold, because I ended up highlighting the words that are referenced. Because of this, however, I don't have to read a synopsis of each act or scene before delving into the actual text!

Othello is such an interesting play that I find it hard to put it down! I definitely plan on reading more Shakespeare's plays from the Folger Library!!!

Pretty good

I love Ray Bradbury, and I love comics, so I was hoping that a combination of the two would be excellent. It wasn't. Don't get me wrong; I enjoyed this graphic novel. It just wasn't perfect. One of the major issues I had with it is that in several of the stories (most notably Dark They Were With Golden Eyes) the pictures and text had a tendency to run off the edge of the page, as though the page was not in quite the right position during the printing. Usually it was not more than a letter that was missing, and I had no trouble in determining what was meant to be said, but it was still annoying. There were also several typos in the brief intros to each story.
The art is wonderful, and fits each story very well. The writing, of course, is Bradbury and I don't think I need to say any more about that. Each story stays very true to the original, and I believe that every line of text is directly from the text of the story, which is nice. Of course, a lot is missing as well, but that's what the pictures are for.
I do think that it helps to have read the stories before reading this. There was one story that I was unfamiliar with, and I don't feel that I got quite as much out of that one as I would have liked. Familiarity with the stories definitely seemed helpful in my appreciation of the renditions of them in this graphic novel.
All in all, an interesting experiment that worked out fairly well. It's enjoyable, but I would recommend it mainly to Bradbury fans, as I don't think others will appreciate it as well.

Must Have for Bradbury/Comic Fans

The Best of Ray Bradbury contains illustrated adaptations of some of Ray Bradbury's most famous stories. The text and the art unquestionably captures the essence of these classic science fiction tales from the 1960's. The language and clothing reflect the time period, and are not modernized. Reading it, I felt as if I was holding a yellowed paperback published in the 1970's. Definitely authentic.

The art for each story is unique. No artist's style is the same. Best of all, Bradbury (who is still alive and writing) has written a moving introduction to the book. The introduction really touched my heart. It has to do with following your dreams, and how he got his start in writing sci-fi. And as a delightful bonus, Bradbury has written brief introductions to each and every story in the book!

Hmmm...

Ibooks continues to amaze me with their selection of reprints, but this one didn't impress me quite as much as others. THE BEST OF RAY BRADBURY: THE GRAPHIC NOVEL is a softcover reprinting of selected tales from Topps Comics' excellent early-90s RAY BRADBURY CHRONICLES series. RBC combined classic EC adaptations of Bradbury's work (by Jack Davis, Johnny Craig, and others) with modern adaptations by top comic and fantasy artists (Corben, Moebius, Muth, VanFleet, P. Craig Russell, & Wayne Barlowe, to name just a few). The problem with this particular release is that iBooks seems to be doing this as a one-shot with just a few select tales, instead of reprinting the entire series. What a loss! Additionally, it appears that one of the included stories ("The City", adapted by Mike Mignola) is a misprint. I could make no sense of the story as presented, so I had to flip some panels/pages around in my head in order to make it work. I would love to see a thorough reprinting of this entire RBC series, so I'll keep waiting.

Excellent!!

I must commend Jamise Dames for her second literary work. I absolutely loved it. This book pulled me in from the beginning and didn't let go. My son actually hid it from me because he said I wouldn't put it down to go to sleep. I loved all the characters, Daisy, Jay, Adonis, Gigi and Ming Li. Many of the other characters were a trip. You'll love this book, it's characters and definitely the story line. The line from this book that stuck out to me was when you said "That a person has to suffer to grow" that is such a true statement. We all have to live in order to learn things. Like isn't an easy street and I believe you showed that in this book. Ms. Dames, keep up the good work, may God continue to bless you and I look forward to your next literary baby!! Go Get This Book!!!

Rest in Peace!

Jamise Dames displays no sophomore jinxes with her second release, Pushing Up Daisies. Filled with colorful characters, conversational dialogue, smooth plotting and transitions, multiple plot twists and turns, Pushing Up Daisies is a fast-paced, action packed read from Chapter One!

Daisy Parker is tired of her trifling, cheating boyfriend of seven (7) years and has decided to toss him out of her life, once and for all. But this time she will not have to worry about him ever coming back, in fact, he has a very good reason for not coming home to her and her nine year-old son. What transpires after that is enough to send Daisy over the edge, as she comes face to face with unknown relatives, lies, betrayal, deceit and secrets from the past.

Pushing Up Daisies is an intriguing and suspenseful novel that I could not read fast enough to find out what would happen next. The first chapter grabbed me and would not let go! Dames had me on a wild goose chase as I traveled from New York to California and picked up more clues and skeletons on each coast. Dames did a good job of introducing multiple characters and storyline as well as wrapping up the various sub-plots. I have read both of Dames books and almost passed on Pushing Up Daisies. I am glad I did not, as Dames demonstrates much growth with her latest release. Creatively crafted, Pushing Up Daisies is a contemporary fiction novel which will appeal to any lover of drama filled reads. Good read for a lazy summer day.

Pushing Daisy

This book is drama after drama. Almost like a soap opera. It will keep your attention throughout the book. Daisy is a wonderful character and she would give anything to have Jay to remain in her life. I do not like to give away too much, but if you want to read some drama, this is the book. Just a touch... Jasper and Jonathan were twins that slept with the same woman; Jasper & Jonathan shared the same DNA so who really fathered Jay? Is Adonis really engaged and just stringing Daisy along for a ride? READ THE BOOK. IT'S GREAT.
