What comes after the moment that changes your life forever? This is the question that haunts Julia Bechtel, Noah Prine, and Kim Collela, the only survivors of a horrific boating accident off the coast of Maine. Julia, a forty-year-old wife and mother, has always done exactly what other expect of her. Pigeonholed by her controlling family and distant husband as 'loyal' and 'obedient', she realises in the aftermath of her brush with death that there is more to her - and to the world - than she ever imagined. Feeling strangely connected to Noah, the divorced, taciturn lobsterman who helped save her life, and Kim, a twenty-one-year old whose role in the accident - and subsequent muteness - are a mystery, Julia begins to explore the unique possibilities offered by the quiet island of Big Sawyer. With each passing moment, each new discovery, she grows every more sure that after coming face to face with death, she must have more from life. Set in a beautifully rendered Maine, where lobstermen leave with the tides each morning to hoist their traps and neighbours gather each night to feat on the catch of the day, THE SUMMER I DARED is a deeply moving story of the risky but rewarding search for self. Barbara Delinsky's latest work is ultimately a story of survival, of the irrepressible ability of the human spirit to rebound from disaster and make life anew.

From Booklist
Ever prolific and popular Delinsky has often considered the phenomena of near-death experiences granting second chances in life, but rather than rely on hackneyed notions of heroes rising Phoenix-like from the ashes to triumph over adversity, Delinsky grounds her characters in the here-and-now and presents them with dilemmas more familiar than fanciful. Such is the case in her latest work, a tale of three people quite literally thrown together following a boating accident off the Maine coast that spares them while taking the lives of nine others. At 40 Julia is an obedient wife, dutiful daughter, and devoted mother, and has planned a visit to her aunt Zoe to reflect on her obligation to herself versus her ties to her family. Rescued by fellow passenger Noah Prine, Julia feels connected to him by virtue of their shared tragedy while also being drawn to Kim Colella, the other survivor, whose whereabouts at the time of the crash provide a shadowy subplot. As a gentle romance blossoms between Julia and Noah, each evaluates who they were before the accident and who they hope to become in its aftermath. Once again, Delinsky excels at combining a compelling mystery with an insightful portrayal of captivating people facing challenges both ordinary and dramatic. Carol Haggas

Review
"Delinsky may be as adept at chronicling contemporary life in New England as any writer this side of John Updike."

I liked this book a lot
By Long Island Lady
I enjoyed this story very much. Julia is a woman who is trying to come to terms with a bad marriage and feelings of low self worth. She goes to an island were she has been happy in the past to have some time to herself. An unfortunate accident occurs and she along with two other survivors must come to terms with what happened. I liked this book because there were different elements to the story that made it interesting. There was a mystery, info on lobstering, Angora rabbits, romance and insight to relationships with people in Julia's life. The characters were interesting and I especially liked the relationship between Noah and his son.
I gave this book 4 stars because I rate only books that I LOVE with 5 stars. This is not my favorite Delinsky book but it did not disappoint. The characters were all interesting and had depth. For me a good book has characters that stand out even if their not the MAIN character and in this book they all stood out. I'm glad I added it to my Delinsky collection.

Engrossing story
By Patricia Kay
I really loved the premise of this book, and I always enjoy Barbara Delinsky's writing. I especially love the way she incorporates information about subjects most of us know nothing about (lobstering, raising angora rabbits, etc.) without boring us to tears. She's a master at weaving her research into her story in a way that doesn't intrude on the story itself, and I really admire that. I would have liked to give this book five stars, but because Julia, her heroine, frustrated me so much of the time, I couldn't. Somehow, in this day and age, I just couldn't believe an educated, sophisticated woman like Julia would be such a doormat for her husband, nor would she put up with his infidelities. It would be different if Julia had had no resources and no way to escape his tyranny, but that wasn't the case at all. I just don't have much patience with women who can't stand up for themselves, and by the time she finally does, I almost didn't care anymore. Despite these problems, this is a worthwhile read, and I do recommend it.
