The Great Escape -Just Who Were the Fifty?

This book gives a background to each of the Fifty RAF and Allied officers who was murdered by the Gestapo on re-capture from Operation 200, post-war named The Great Escape. It is well researched and goes into great detail. At times it is rather poignant, especially when a survivor of Stalag Luft 3 visits the parents of one of the Fifty after the war. Jonathan Vance has a very readable style and it is an excellent book for people like me to want to know more about the central characters in a true war story, where they came from and what happened to them after the war, etc. All this is in this book.
A Gallant Company: The Men of the Great Escape must be regarded as a companion book to Paul Brickhill's The Great Escape.

Some Novel Information about the Great Escape

Most of the information presented in this book is the same or very similar to that provided in 1950 by Paul Brickhill's classic book on the Great Escape. Among the novel information in this book is a greater emphasis on the biographies of the escapers as well as the postwar trials of the German criminals responsible for murdering 50 of the 73 recaptured escapes.

Vance also discusses the problem of Harry turning out 20-30 feet short of the woods in somewhat greater detail than most if not all other books on the Great Escape. Interestingly, there was an earlier hint of this problem. While still digging the exit shaft, the tunnelers heard the sounds of trucks on the nearby road, and began to suspect that the exit shaft was too close to the road and thereby short of the woods. But a recheck of the computations failed to disclose any error in surveying. One wonders, then, why Harry came up short of the woods. Vance presents simple information that underscores the challenges of land surveying without proper equipment. It turns out that, when an exterior tree (with its necessary wide trunk) was forced to serve as the surveyors' transit, a small error in measured angle added up to a significant error in estimated distance. Perhaps this explains Harry's excessive shortness.

There is a novel map of Sagan and the villages around it. Vance also provides detail about some of the blind spots in the wire (a fact that inspired the baseball-throwing escape attempt by Steve McQueen in the film). It turns out to be a problem of visual perspective: The goon towers were so far apart that the wire would bunch together when viewed from a distance at a steep angle. Ironically, increasing the platform size of the goon towers created new blind spots directly underneath the towers!

Another excellent addition to the genre

For those who are fans of the "prison escape" genre, this book is an excellent addition to the growing number of books which cover that most famous of mass escapes, the March 1944 "great escape" from Stalag Luft III.
If, like myself, you have read and loved Paul Brickhill's "The Great Escape", but found yourself wanting more and deeper information, this book is a goldmine.
During the prelude and epilog sections of the Brickhill book, the reader is teased with brief glimpses of people, places and events which are relevent to the main story, but which are (necessarily) not examined in detail. Some examples include the many early escape attempts by some of the Great Escape principals, the other prison camps in the Luftwaffe system, and the stories of most of the actual escapers themselves.
"A Gallant Company" addresses all these issues. The reader gets to know each and every remarkable man who went through that tunnel, what circumstances brought them into the war, what role they played in the escape organization, and their fate following the escape. Individually and collectively, their story is an extraordinary one. Jonathan Vance's telling of it is engrossing and highly readable.
This is not a book for the reader who is unfamiliar with the basic story, however. I would strongly recommend a read through the Brickhill book first -- a rewarding experience in itself. (Note: please, don't assume that the movie version is enough to cover this ground! A *fine* film, but a highly fictionalized adaptation!).
Taken together with "The Great Escape" and Arthur Durand's excellent "Stalag Luft III - The Secret Story", Jonathan Vance's "A Gallant Company" provides as complete a picture as any escape story fan could possibly want.
A minor quibble - I couldn't locate a source or citations section in this book. Where did Vance's wealth of information come from? I assume from personal interviews with camp survivors and family members, and many of the same sources named in the Durand book.

A book about guns in America that doesn't take sides? A book about women and guns that avoids all the theoretical debates about what women "should" feel? Journalist Kelly starts out with some bold confessions instead: that she's been the victim of crime several times, and that she's loved learning to use guns and found it very empowering but doesn't own one herself because she's unwilling to shoulder "the social responsibility of keeping a firearm" in her home. While women do buy guns for sports or hunting, most of the 11 million to 17 million female gun-owners in America are looking for protection, says Kelly. According to the author, three-quarters of all women in America will be crime victims at some point in their lives; since most women are smaller and physically weaker than their assailants, Kelly believes "a gun... is the only weapon that truly levels the field in a life-threatening confrontation." Guns may make women feel safer, the author acknowledges, but do they really protect? While many women want guns to intimidate and don't ever plan to fire to kill, women who do shoot their attackers may face long jail sentences. While Kelly's prose is peppered with shocking statistics from both sides of the debate, it's her interviews with improbable women gun owners—delicately coifed elderly ladies, preppy Mount Holyoke College students, a big-game hunting former Miss Mississippi—that truly fascinate. Kelly offers no conclusions, just a list of sensible recommendations that anyone from either side could support: addressing violence against women, making women's safety a public priority and taking measures to reinforce responsible gun ownership.

Blown away by Blown Away

I challenged myself to read a book about a subject I'm not comfortable with and then couldn't put it down. What a great Journalist and Storyteller Ms. Kelly turned out to be. I particularly enjoyed reading the history of women and guns in America. It gave me much food for thought. I highly recommend it for everyone on either side of this issue.

Great Insight into Why Women Buy and Have Guns

I found the book very powerful. The author's interviews with women of all walks of life were very interesting. You really understand that a gun is seen as a guard against violence towards women. The book was well written and not full of opinions by the author. Just real people talking. Great Book.

Reprint of older books

The brain ship books are superb writing and if you don't have the older books, it is well worth getting. But the description is deceptive in that it does not tell you that this is a compilation of three books reprinted together under a different cover. Therefore, I am returning the book.

reprints with different names

I do love these authors and was so glad to find a new book. But. . . it is a collection of two books I already have put into one volume with a new name. Not quite the nice reading time I was looking forward to. I won't be the only one to buy it without knowing this so look for used "like new" to be available quickly. This is The Ship Who Searched and Partnership simply put in one volume. If you want these two books it is a good deal - if not . . .

It's a TRICK

This is not a new book, instead it is a combination of two old books. I bought it and then realized the flaw. I almost thought of keeping it, but Baen Publisher has produced such a low quality product (thin pages, etc) that it would not hold up very well. AMAZON, get it together and give it a proper description.

Carole, Joni, and Carly

Three of my favorite performers in the 60s and 70s. I already knew a lot about them going into this book, but was pleasantly surprised about how much I didn't know. Sheila Weller certainly did her research. That being said, the book jumps around the given timelines making it hard to follow. Some parts that I was really interested in were just glossed over (i.e. Carole and her husband welcome a baby into the world and the next paragraph they're getting a divorce), while other points were brought up again and again in minute detail. Over-all, I enjoyed this book but it should have been better written.

Like filling up on salad . . .

Being a hugh Carly Simon and Carole King "fan", I preordered this book and waited with anticipation for its release. To this day, I have yet to finish reading GIRLS LIKE US. It's kind of like reading the phone book---an endless list of names that often repeat---but with lots more errors. Weller's opinions and old friends' memories woven together into a tapestry full of holes. If you've got to read it, check it out of your local library. Don't waste the money. Or better yet, see if your local library has the audio version. Being tortured by someone else trying to sell this tale has to beat self-imposed torture by reading it yourself!

The title of this engaging triple biography is a little ambiguous (Is "like" a verb or preposition?) and could serve equally well as the title for the Jonas Brother's joint biography (a few years down the road when they have something to report). But unlike the Jonas Brothers, the subjects of this book--Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon--took no purity pledges in high school. In fact, the sexual/gender autonomy of the women is very much at the heart of Sheila Weller's narrative. Each of these singer-songwriters came of age just as the sexual revolution of the 1960s and middle-class feminism of the 70s began changing American culture forever. And the stories of how each of these artists struggled to make the transition from the traditional values their mothers embodied to a newer, hipper, freer consciousness is fascinating. All the questions of balancing career, romantic relationships, and families are explored, as are the dynamics of being in the same profession as one's spouse. To give Weller credit, she can be as critical of her female subjects as she is of their male partners. No favoritism here. And she seems to have interviewed a wide range of people to corroborate as much as she could in the vicious and tacky world of "he said/she said."

You could ask yourself, Why these three women? Why not Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Janis Joplin, Grace Slick, or Laura Nyro. Interestingly, Nyro is something of a shadow figure in this story (identified as the only female contemporary whose work Mitchell respected). But for the others I've named, powerful and compelling performers though they may have been, they are more recognized for their powers of performance and less as songwriters. I think Weller chose well and its fascinating to see how much overlapping their was in the careers and lives of King, Mitchell, and Simon.

Weller does a really good job of presenting these women's lives in the context of their times. Though early in the book she often gets carried away with adjective-compounded riffs like, "In their tiny-mirror-studded, embroidered Moroccan vests over flounce-sleeved, stock-tied blouses tucked into jeans or miniskirts, silk scarves pirate-tied low on their brows--as those `incense owls' (and the roach-clipped billows) spiraled in the air while clay-potted candles threw hypnotic flickers on exposed brick walls--countless young women (some enduring heartbreak over the shadier guys who'd replaced the boring college boys they'd happily jettisoned) heard in Joni's words, through Judy's voice, a shared epiphany about the emotional risks they had chosen." But there's much less of this self-indulgent verbiage in the second half of the book. Weller also does a good job of showing how substantial her subjects' contributions to the art of song writing and performing have been. Each artist has had over a dozen albums to her credit, many of which are undeniable landmarks in the evolution of American popular song. Bravi!

I loved this book!!!

This was a great romance novel, and I don't give out five stars easily. I loved the characters and their processing of the heroine's "ruination". It was very cute and I loved Dand Ross. He was my kind of hero, very strong, and the way he teased Charlotte was so cute. I recommend this book because of it's humor, that had me laughing out loud.

I suppose I could have enjoyed this book a bit if I had been able to take seriously the idea of the heroine as a spy. Unfortunately, it never rang true for me, and I couldn't suspend my disbelief, no matter how willing. This was a significant impediment to enjoying the book because Brockway spends a lot of time spinning out the intricacies of innumerable intrigues that never seem to matter or go anywhere - they just make the plot *seem* complicated and sacrifice depth of feeling and meaning where it's most needed: the romance between Charlotte Nash and Andrew Ross. As for the brilliant super spy plan - its too tedious and silly to detail here. Suffice it to say it involves our intrepid heroine hobnobbing with a spy prostitute, putting on the typical, seemingly inevitable Scarlet Pimpernel show, recovering a recriminating stolen letter and, last but not least, prostitution for God and Country - should I be surprised? Because if Charlotte does not become the mistress of a Comte St. Lyon who holds the letter ransom, millions of innocent men, women, and children will die and Britain will be overrun with evil Frenchmen. The straw that broke my back was a well timed letter from Charlotte's sister Kate going on and on about just that. She doesn't suggest Charlotte should do it for Britain in so many words (she doesn't know what Charlotte is contemplating, after all), but the transparency of this letter's guilt trip is rivaled only by a feed the hungry commercial as Kate bewails the suffering of innocents and wishes she could do something. Heretofore Charlotte has been having second thoughts, but this saccharine letter suitably stiffens her resolve. She can "do something" and proceeds with her much vaunted martyrdom. I can't tell you how frustrating this bit of authorial manipulation was. And I'm supposed to believe that the heroine is intelligent and practical. She was kind of interesting as a hoydenish flirt always skirting scandal. But I ask you, can a woman be a spy without being a prostitute? Any potential Charlotte had for being a credible spy was curtailed by this ridiculous plot.

Besides the spy element, My Surrender is best summed up by the words of one of its characters: "I don't know what Dand is thinking." Ditto. I certainly never caught on to Dand's character. This left a crucial, jarring gap in this last installment of the Rose Hunter's Trilogy. I can only suppose the author left him such a mystery because she wanted to create a red herring and lead the reader to suspect he might have been the bad guy - which is an interesting tactic and a daring attempt at something unconventional (if that's even what Brockway was about, because I'm honestly at a loss here, and within the confines of the romance genre such a possibility doesn't really make sense... does it???) But for those who could spot the evil mastermind a mile away, the attempt was wasted. Even when it comes time for the bad guy's unmasking and long-winded monologing, we're never afforded enough of an insight into Dand's thoughts. My Surrender is therefore all Charlotte's story, and I frankly wasn't interested in her agonized efforts to force herself into a sacrifice she really doesn't want to make, nor in the pretense of Dand and Charlotte conspiring to ruin her reputation in order to hook her up with St. Lyon. This last became the focus of the book, so for a long while I was very bored.

My Surrender did manage to pick up about halfway through, once the two had dispensed with the charade of Dand as Charlotte's lover, and then the sparks really did fly between Charlotte and Dand. I kept turning the pages, if only because I was desperate for some coherency that would resolve the convoluted madness of so many plot threads, mysteries, and spy nonsense. When the denouement and explanations came, however, I was disappointed. I felt like Brockway had created such a beautiful romance of later day knights pledging themselves fervently to their cause, each other, and the women they loved, only to tear it down and trample it underfoot as a lie none of them had ever taken seriously in the first place. This twist would have been fine if it had been in any way addressed or fleshed out, but I was ushered into a happily ever after epilogue before I knew what hit me. I ended this series dismayed and disheartened.

Tightening the relaunch

Due to two pregnancies (editor Marco Palmieri's wife and Perry herself), "Unity" was pushed back from its initial release of February. As such, fans of the relaunch have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of "Unity," which promises to deliver many of the answers fans have been waiting for. Indeed, it proves to wrap up old plot lines and create more, making for an extremely fast read (three hours); however, fans of Perry's previous work in the Trek universe already know of her fast-paced, well-written prose and deft characterization. One can almost hear the actors delivering their lines with customary inflection; from O'Brien to Kira to Opaka, the characters come alive on every page. If anything, the 330 or so pages are barely enough to contain the energy, development, and anticipation that build up through the entire novel.
At the center of "Unity" is, of course, the parasite crisis; Bajor and DS9 are under seige and the Bajoran sector is under lockdown. Cardassian warships surround both planet and station, a communications blackout in effect. Gul Macet, previously seen clawing at his throat when a parasite launches itself at the Dukat-esque Cardassian, is in charge of the Cardassian contingent. This is the scene that Vaughn and the crew of the "Defiant" find themselves entering.
Without revealing anything too much, "Unity" gives us more of the inner turmoil Vaughn finds himself facing after shooting the Borg-Ruriko in sickbay, the anger Prynn holds for Vaughn, the deep-seeded Trill desire for privacy in all matters internal, and, of course, Kira's Attainder.
Ro and Quark are given a lot of face time, and not just towards their romance; each have their own demons to face: if Bajor joins the Federation, Ro fears she will be turned over to Starfleet for prosecution and Quark fears he will be forced to leave DS9 for more profitable pastures. Taran'atar bonds with Wex, the stowaway whom Jake Sisko encountered when fulfilling his part of the Avatar prophecy. While not everyone is who they appear, one person holds true to her nature; the former Kai, Opaka Sulan.
It is she who finds a Bajor in spiritual crisis, telling Vedek Yevir it is not the texts Kira uploaded that have caused the split in faith; it is the Attainder the Vedek Assembly placed upon the colonel that has lead to Bajor fractured. The former Kai does not step up to retake her mantle, instead opting to allow spiritual politics to play out as they will, acting instead as a spirtiual counselor to the lost Elias Vaughn. She exposes him to the Orb of Unity, allowing for Vaughn to come face to face with the man he first encountered in the Badlands after opening the Orb of Memory. His role is significant to the novel, and while he is not completely healed at the conclusion of "Unity," the centenarian commander is well on his way, thanks to the Prophets.
Ultimately, we discover the fate of Sisko and Kasidy, see the true face of evil (read: parasite), and relish the return of the O'Brien's to the fore. We leave the novel with an Andor in a peril of its own creation and an Andorian alone, a Bajor redefined and a faith still fractured, a son coming to terms with his father's place in the universe, and, as the cover shows, a former Bajoran freedom-fighter trying out a new uniform. Sometimes frightening, sometimes funny, sometimes bittersweet, and always breathtaking, "Unity" establishes Perry as the chancellor of the relaunch, leaving the reader satisfied yet wanting more.
Oh, I almost forgot; "somewhere on Bajor...a child long awaited is born."

A wonderful continuation of the DS9 saga!

I waited a very long time for this book, and I must say it was worthy of the wait. S.D. Perry began the relaunch of DS9 with the "Avatar" duet, and since then, I've been avidly watching the series unfold.

First off, the book captured the ensemble feel of the show excellently - the main characters - including the new characters written into the storyline to replace characters gone or lost at the show's end - all shine in their own way with their own interesting stories. The new plot-arc of the invading parasitic aliens - as we've seen on screen in TNG, and read about in the superb "Lives of Dax," short story collection - continues with a great deal of suspense and solid prose work.

Best of all, the internal minds and emotional states of the characters are both valid and consistant. Shar, especially, gets a lot of work in this book, as does Lieutenant Ro, who is definitely at a loss as to what she should choose, now that Bajor might merge with the Federation and her job would become a Starfleet one.

Granted, the purchase of a Star Trek hardcover often makes me flinch (it's quite expensive), but this one was worth it - even if I did tear through it in a single evening.

The only part of the book I have a caveat for is the 'Benny' storyline - I never quite liked Sisko's insane asylum plotline in the series, and having Elias Vaughn go through something similar grated on me a little - though, if you enjoyed the various visions Sisko had at the hands of the prophets in the show, you'll likely enjoy this also.

Very well done.

Unity delivers!

As an avid fan of the television series, but generally not a fan of the Star Trek books, I must say that SD Perry and the other authors have done an absolutely magnificent job of reviving the series with intricate, complex plots and richly textured characters--I have been eagerly awaiting Unity's release for several months now. Unity is aptly titled--it is a spectacular conclusion to several stories that have been building over the course of several books, and supremely satisfying in its treatment of the characters and resolution of plotlines new and old. My one qualm with the novel is that at 300 pages, it seemed compressed--particularly towards the end. Perry deftly builds the anticipation and races us through a pulsing climax, but then she only has a very few pages left at the end to wrap up several storylines (and, unfortunately, she leaves--and it feels unintentional--some key threads untied. Perhaps for the next novel?). It was almost as if Pocket Books forced Perry to keep the novel relatively short. . .Even so, for those true DS9 fans, Unity, and all of the books that led up to it, are indeed DS9's "eighth season." Perry has captured everything we loved about the series. Can't wait for the next book.

But even great entertainers have high and lows, and this novel, while steadily absorbing, doesn't match the author's best. Geneva Settle, who's 16 and black, is attacked in a Manhattan library while researching an ancestor, a former slave who harbored a serious secret (not revealed until book's end). Amelia Sachs, Rhyme's lover/assistant, and then Rhyme are pulled into the case, which quickly turns bloody. After Geneva are a lethally cool white hit man and a black ex-con—but even when they're identified, their motive remains unclear: why does someone want this feisty, hardworking Harlem schoolgirl dead? To find out, Rhyme primarily relies, as usual, on his and Sachs's strength, forensic analysis; the book's tour de force opening sequence consists mostly of a lengthy depiction of their painstaking dissection of evidence left during the initial attack on Geneva, and every few chapters there's an extensive recap of all evidence collected in the case. Deaver offers more plot twists than seem possible, each fully justified, but this and the emphasis on forensics give the novel more brain than heart. Geneva, a wonderful character, adds feeling to the story, and there are minor personal crises faced by other characters, but as the novel's focus veers from police procedure to odd byways of American history, execution techniques and one more plot twist, the narrative loses grace and form. Even so, this is one of the more lively thrillers of the year and will be a significant bestseller.

A new Lincoln Rhyme novel is cause for excitement among fans of twisty-turny thrillers. This time out, Rhyme, the quadriplegic forensic investigator, is trying to find out why a man was stalking a high-school student. Turns out it might have something to do with the death of one of the student's ancestors nearly 140 years ago. Deaver, who must have been born with a special plot-twist gene, somehow manages, in every book, to pull two or three big surprises out of his hat. He also has a knack for drawing us immediately into the story. For some readers, it's his detailed description of investigative techniques; for others, it's Rhyme himself, the crusty, bad-tempered (but secretly lovable) detective who, with the help of his protege (and lover), the beautiful Amelia Sachs, solves crimes that most other investigators couldn't begin to crack. The Rhyme novels are among the cleverest of contemporary detective fiction. It is disappointing, however, to report that this one has a rather noticeable flaw. He attempts to render the dialogue of an African American character, in a kind of written Ebonics ("'S'up, girl?") that is very distracting to read and pulls us right out of the story. One of Deaver's strong points has always been his ability to write flowing dialogue; the awkward effort here to translate oral idiom into written language is an unfortunate slipup. Aside from that, though, it's a typically well-written, suspenseful story. David Pitt

The other JD books I have read have had better plots than this one

The other JD books I have read have had better plots than this one. There's no climactic ending; more of an informative ending. I was also put out by how the African-American characters were portrayed due to the stereotypical 'ghetto' language used for most of these characters. I'm okay with language that helps build a more authentic portrayal of a character (southern characters pretty much have to say 'y'all' for example) but in this novel I thought it made the characters sounds less intelligent and was insulting.

ENOUGH TWISTS AND TURNS TO MAKE YOU DIZZY

From the moment the unhappy pediatrician/coroner enters the town's dinner and finds a woman dying in the restroom, the action is non-stop. The victim, a blind college professor, is mutilated and her twin sister, one of town's police officer's swears vengeance. Everyone in the small Georgia town seems to hold their own secrets that make solving this and murders to follow almost impossible. But it is Sara, the pediatrician/coroner who who as the most secrets of all. An incredible, spell-binding story.

Predictably fresh

The trick to all great writing (and especially to great genre writing) is to do old things in fresh ways. The tried and true, without novelty, is dull and predictable. The truly 'novel', lacking an anchor in nature and convention, is simply weird. No one understands this better than Deaver, who characteristically combines fresh material (usually forensic material, but sometimes historical material) with the key elements of thriller/suspense. In THE TWELFTH CARD he even adds one of the chestnuts of traditional fiction, the appearance of a mysterious stranger, who enjoys a special relationship with one of the central characters. My only reservation is that he also, characteristically, includes at least two 'unexpected' twists and turns as the narrative moves to its conclusion. Since he does this consistently, the plot twists lose their impact, at least for his devotees (among whom I count myself), who come to expect them.
